  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature and light conditions on the vigor and growth responses of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings in the nonheated plastic houses with triple and quadruple coverings during winter. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The growth in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and dry weight of each organ was reduced up to 50% in the triple coverings compared to quadruple ones. The greatest difference between the triple coverings and quadruple ones was the leaf area, showing two to five times larger in the quadruple ones. Therefore, the differences of the early environmental conditions during raising seedling stage was well reflected. 2. The leaf expansion in the early stage of seedling was delayed in the triple coverings and subsequently crop growth rate(CGR) significantly reduced. The specific leaf area (SLA) in the triple coverings was less than quadruple ones. The net assimilation rate (NAR) was increased in the early stage of seedlings and then reduced in the quadruple coverings. In triple ones, however, the great reduction showed at six weeks after sowing and then increased sharply. 3. The linear relationship among leaf area, total dry weight and leaf dry weight was observed in the all experimental areas, while between leaf area and crop growth rate only in the quadruple coverings, and between leaf area and net assimilation rate in both triple and quadruple ones. 4. The dry matter partitioned to the leaf increased up to six weeks after sowing in the triple coverings but reduced in the stem and root. However, the adverse results were obtained in the quadruple ones. 5. In the triple coverings, the number of branches showed the exponential increment while fruit weight showed linear increment in both triple and quadruple ones. Higher yield was obtained in the quadruple ones. 6. The shoot dry weight among the characteristics of seedlings was greatly contributed to the yield of red pepper after transplanting. Accordingly, one of the decisive criterion for good quality of red pepper seedlings was determined by the highest correlation between shoot dry weight of growing plant and fruit yield of pepper plant.

  • Reduced irradiance promotes shoot elongation depending on developmental stage and environmental factors and decreases plant quality in $Cyclamen$ $persicum$ Mill. To determine the petiole elongation responses to low irradiance, 'Metis Scarlet Red' cyclamen at different developmental stages [juvenile (5-6 unfolded leaves), transitional (1-3 visible flower buds), or mature (1-3 elongating peduncles)] was grown in growth modules at 60 (low light, LL) or 240 (high light, HL) ${\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD within the growth chambers at different temperatures [16/12 (low temperature, LT), 22/18 (medium temperature, MT), or 28/$24^{\circ}C$ (high temperature, HT) (day/night)]. In Experiment I, juvenile plants were either kept in an LL or HL module during the entire treatment of 4 weeks or were transferred to the other module at 1, 2, or 3 weeks after treatment in an MT chamber. In Experiment II, juvenile, transitional, or mature plants were moved to the HL module at 0, 3, 6, 9, or 12 days after being placed in the LL module at the MT chamber and grown for 21 days. In Experiment III, transitional plants were moved to the HL module at 0, 3, 6, 9, or 12 days after being placed in the LL module at the LT, MT, or HT chambers. As the exposure duration to LL increased from 0 to 4 weeks or from 0 to 12 days, petiole length and plant height increased at all temperatures and developmental stages. In Experiment I, the exposure to LL during the latter period, rather than the early period, increased elongation rate. In Experiment II, petiole elongation in transitional plants was more sensitive to LL than juvenile or mature plants during the early period of the treatment for 12 days. In Experiment III, petiole length increased with increasing temperature and exposure duration to LL. Petiole elongation rate at HT increased rapidly from the beginning of LL exposure as compared to LT. Increase of $6^{\circ}C$ in temperature had the similar effect to LL exposure for 3 days in petiole elongation. To conclude, transitional cyclamen under higher temperatures responds more immediately to low irradiance and elongates its petioles.

  • We investigated an ecological impact of drought simulated by discharge depletion on the water quality and benthic diatom community in the indoor experimental channel. As artificial substrates slide-glass was installed in acrylic channel for 16 days. Channels were supplied continuously with eutrophic lake water with a discharge rate of 6 L $min^{-1}$ in duplication during the colonized period. And then during the discharge depletion period, three discharge rates were provided: NDF (No depletion of flow rate (Control): 6 L $min^{-1}$), LDF (Low depletion of flow rate: 3 L $min^{-1}$) and HDF (High depletion of flow rate: 1 L $min^{-1}$). Environmental factors in the water, such as suspended solid, Chl-$a$ and nutrients concentration, were measured with periphytic algae including AFDM (ash free dry matter), Chl-$a$ concentration and cell density at 1-day intervals. Light intensity increased significantly with discharge depletion (F=229.5, p= 0.000). $NH_4$-N concentration was highest at HDF. Suspended solid in outflowing water decreased at HDF (88%), LDF (97%) and NDF (99%), compared to inflowing water (100 %). Chl-$a$ in substrates increased more than two times at LDF and HDF than NDF (F= 8.399, p=0.001). Also AFDM and benthic diatom density increased significantly at LDF and HDF than NDF (F=9.390, p=0.001; F=6.088, p=0.007). In all experimental groups, $Aulacoseira$ $ambigua$, $Achnanthes$ $minutissima$ and $Aulacoseira$ $granulata$ were dominant species accounting for greater than 10% of benthic diatom density. The most dominant species, $A.$ $ambigua$ was highest at LDF, followed by HDF and NDF (F=8.551, p=0.001). In conclusion, the effect of drought simulated by discharge depletion in an artificial stream ecosystem caused significant changes on water quality and benthic diatom biomass. This result provides a useful data to understand the effect of draught on stream ecosystem in situ.

  • To selection of optimal shading material, two-year-old ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) of new cultivar, 'Cheonpoong' (CP), and native species 'Hwangsookjong' (HS) were cultured under three kinds of shading materials such as three-layered blue and a one-layered black PE (polyethylene) net (TBSB), blue PE sheet (BS), and aluminium coated PE sheet (AS) in imperfectly drained paddy soil. Growth characteristics, yield and ginsenoside contents were investigated under three shading materials. Yield and ginsenoside contents of ginseng were distinctly affected by intensity and quality of sunlight penetrated through shading materials. Light transmission ratio, air and soil temperature according to shading materials were higher in order of BS, AS, and TBSB. However, ratio of aerial phase and porosity of the soil were higher in order of AS, BS, and TBSB, respectively. There was no significantly difference in the ratio of rusty colored root by shading materials. CP showed higher stem length, leaf area, and root weight than that of HS, while the former showed distinctly lower discolored leaf ratio than that the other. Eight kinds of ginsenosides content of CP were higher than that of HS in $Rg_1$, Re, Rf, $Rb_1$ and Rc except $Rg_2$, $Rb_2$, and $Rb_3$. Total ginsenoside contents of CP was distinctly higher than that of HS. Total ginsenoside contents as affected by shading materials was higher in order of BS, TBSB, and AS in CP, while TBSB, BS, and AS in HS.

  • It is crucial to minimize setup errors of a cancer treatment machine using a high energy and to perform precise radiation therapy. Usually, port film has been used for verifying errors. The Korea Cancer Center Hospital (KCCH) has manufactured digital electronic portal imaging device (EPID) system to verify treatment machine errors as a Quality Assurance (Q.A) tool. This EPID was consisted of a metal/fluorescent screen, 45$^{\circ}$ mirror, a camera and an image grabber and could display the portal image with near real time KIRAMS has also made the acrylic phantom that has lead line of 1mm width for ligh/radiation field congruence verification and reference points phantom for using as an isocenter on portal image. We acquired portal images of 10$\times$10cm field size with this phantom by EPID and portal film rotating treatment head by 0.3$^{\circ}$, 0.6$^{\circ}$ and 0.9$^{\circ}$. To check field size, we acquired portal images with 18$\times$18cm, 19$\times$19cm and 20$\times$20cm field size with collimator angle 0$^{\circ}$ and 0.5$^{\circ}$ individually. We have performed Flatness comparison by displaying the line intensity from EPID and film images. The 0.6$^{\circ}$ shift of collimator angle was easily observed by edge detection of irradiated field size on EPID image. To the extent of one pixel (0.76mm) difference could be detected. We also have measured field size by finding optimal threshold value, finding isocenter, finding field edge and gauging distance between isocenter and edge. This EPID system could be used as a Q.A tool for checking field size, light/radiation congruence and flatness with a developed video based EPID.

  • A proper level of UV-A light treatment in terms of intensity, spectrum, and exposure duration is known to have a positive impact on plant growth, photosynthesis, and the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. However, there are few studies investigating the physiological responses of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) to UV radiation. Hence, this study aimed to assess the effects of short-term UV-A radiation on the growth and bioactive compounds of spinach. Spinach seedlings were cultivated in a vertical farm module under the following environmental conditions: photosynthetic photon flux density 200 µmol·m-2·s-1, white LED, 12 h on/off, 20℃ air temperature, 70% relative humidity, and 500 µmol·mol-1 CO2 concentration. After 5 weeks of sowing, the seedlings were subjected to continuous UV-A (peak wavelength; 385 nm) irradiation at two different energy levels: 20 W·m-2 and 40 W·m-2 for 7 days. As a result, the UV-A20W treatment increased the shoot fresh and dry weights of spinach. However, there were no significant differences observed in photosynthetic parameters between the UV-A treatments and the control. The maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) consistently decreased across all UV-A treatments for 7 days in UV-A treatments. Additionally, the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity increased in the UV-A20W treatment at 7 days of treatment as well as the total flavonoid content significantly increased at 5 and 7 days of treatment. These findings suggest that supplemental UV-A LED radiation can enhance the growth and quality of spinach cultivated in closed type plant production systems such as vertical farms.

To obtain the $ZnIn_2S_4$ single crystal thin film, $ZnIn_2S_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on throughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) in the Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE) system. The source and substrate temperature were $610^{\circ}C$ and $450^{\circ}C$, respectively and the growth rate of the $ZnIn_2S_4$ sing1e crystal thin film was about $0.5\;{\mu}m/hr$. The crystalline structure of $ZnIn_2S_4$ single crystal thin film was investigated by photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD) measurement. The carrier density and mobility of $ZnIn_2S_4$ single crystal thin film measured from Hall effect by van der Pauw method are $8.51{\times}10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$, $291\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$ at $293_{\circ}\;K$, respectively. From the photocurrent spectrum by illumination of perpendicular light on the c - axis of the $ZnIn_2S_4$ single crystal thin film, we have found that the values of spin orbit splitting ${\Delta}S_O$ and the crystal field splitting ${\Delta}Cr$ were 0.0148 eV and 0.1678 eV at $10_{\circ}\; K$, respectively. From the photoluminescence measurement of $ZnIn_2S_4$ single crystal thin film, we observed free excition $(E_X)$ typically observed only in high quality crystal and neutral donor bound exciton $(D^{o},X)$ having very strong peak intensity The full width at half maximum and binding energy of neutral donor bound excition were 9 meV and 26 meV, respectively, The activation energy of impurity measured by Haynes rule was 130 meV.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the dormancy physiology, method of softening culture and evaluation of nutritional value of wild garlic, Ulrung-native Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum. In March, a new bulbs, the shoot and bulbs began to develop until the bulbs showed their complete dormant states in late August. The bulbs renewed to another one in every years. When shoots germinated about $1{\sim}2\;cm$ from mother bulbs, the soft tissues in the mother bublbs was degenerated and finally remained as only fiberous tissues unlike the other bulbaceous plants. There was a high inhibiting activities like ABA in the bulbs. This is believed that this inhibiting substance like ABA in the bulbs is related to the dormancy of wild garlic. Although the immatured bulbs, harvested at May and June, was treated with chilling for 90 days, it didn't germinate their shooting, but the matured bulbs, harvested at July and August, could germinate their shooting over 1 cm in 75 and 60 days chilling treatment, respectively. The shoot elongation was promoted by the longer chilling periods, the later harvesting day and the dark condition. The crude fiber content of leaf and stem increased at more expanded leaf and higher light intensity condition. Since the shoots, grown from germinating to leaf expanding time, had a good quality for food stuff and had less crude fibers, we supposed this period is to be most appropriate for harvesting time.
