  • A dragonfly inspired flapping wing is investigated in this paper. The flapping wing is actuated from the root by a PZT-5H and PZN-7%PT single crystal unimorph in the piezofan configuration. The non-linear governing equations of motion of the smart flapping wing are obtained using the Hamilton's principle. These equations are then discretized using the Galerkin method and solved using the method of multiple scales. Dynamic characteristics of smart flapping wings having the same size as the actual wings of three different dragonfly species Aeshna Multicolor, Anax Parthenope Julius and Sympetrum Frequens are analyzed using numerical simulations. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. Finally, a comparative study of performances of three piezoelectrically actuated flapping wings is performed. The numerical results in this paper show that use of PZN-7%PT single crystal piezoceramic can lead to considerable amount of wing weight reduction and increase of lift and thrust force compared to PZT-5H material. It is also shown that dragonfly inspired smart flapping wings actuated by single crystal piezoceramic are a viable contender for insect scale flapping wing micro air vehicles.

  • Mobile hydraulics require higher energy efficiency, and a simpler as well as robust design, than general industrial hydraulics. The 6/3-way directional control valve is widely used as a mobile hydraulic control valve. However, since the 6/3-way directional control valve is a spool type valve, it is difficult to maintain the load. A counterbalance valve is typically used, to maintain the load, and lift down. However, in an industrial field using a mobile hydraulics device, a pilot controlled check valve may be used to implement holding and lifting operation of the self-weight load, and a relief valve may be used simply to exert back pressure. But no comparative analysis of advantages and disadvantages of each method was revealed. In this study, various methods of holding and unloading load with self-weight in mobile hydraulics are investigated, and compared through simulation using AMESim software. This is experimentally verified by using Festo's mobile hydraulic test rig TP800.

  • The four wing unmanned aerial vehicle owns the characteristics of small size, light weight, convenient operation and well stability. But it is easily disturbed by external environmental factors during flight with these disadvantages of short endurance and poor attitude solving ability. For solving these problems, a microprocessor based on STM32 chip is designed and the overall development is completed by the resources such as built-in timer and multi-function mode general-purpose input/output provided by the master micro controller unit, together with radio receiver, attitude meter, barometer, electronic speed control and other devices. The unmanned aerial vehicle can be remotely controlled and send radio waves to its corresponding receiver, control the analog level change of its corresponding channel pins. The master control chip can analyze and process the data to send multiple sets pulse signals of pulse width modulation to each electronic speed control. Then the electronic speed control will transform different pulse signals into different sizes of current value to drive the motor located in each direction of the frame to generate different rotational speed and generate lift force. To control the body of the unmanned aerial vehicle, so as to achieve the operator's requirements for attitude control, the PID controller based on Kalman filter is used to achieve quick response time and control accuracy. Test results show that the design is feasible.

  • To evaluate the wind shielding effect of bridge towers with multiple limbs on high-speed trains, a wind tunnel test was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicles traversing multi-limb towers, which represented a combination of the steady aerodynamic coefficient of the vehicle-bridge system and wind environment around the tower. Subsequently, the analysis model of wind-vehicle-bridge (WVB) system considering the additional moments caused by lift and drag forces under nonuniform wind was proposed, and the reliability and accuracy of the proposed model of WVB system were verified using another model. Finally, the factors influencing the wind shielding effect of multi-limb towers were analyzed. The results indicate that the wind speed distributions along the span exhibit two sudden changes, and the wind speed generally decreases with increasing wind direction angle. The pitching and yawing accelerations of vehicles under nonuniform wind loads significantly increase due to the additional pitching and yawing moments. The sudden change values of the lateral and yawing accelerations caused by the wind shielding effect of multi-limb tower are 0.43 m/s2 and 0.11 rad/s2 within 0.4 s, respectively. The results indicate that the wind shielding effect of a multi-limb tower is the controlling factor in WVB systems.

  • The purpose of this study establishes the deep neural network (DNN) and Decoder models to predict the flow and thermal fields of three-dimensional wavy wings as a passive flow control. The wide ranges of the wavy geometric parameters of wave amplitude and wave number are considered for the various the angles of attack and the aspect ratios of a wing. The huge dataset for training and test of the deep learning models are generated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The DNN and Decoder models exhibit quantitatively accurate predictions for aerodynamic coefficients and Nusselt numbers, also qualitative pressure, limiting streamlines, and Nusselt number distributions on the surface. Particularly, Decoder model regenerates the important flow features of tiny vortices in the valleys, which makes a delay of the stall. Also, the spiral vortical formation is realized by the Decoder model, which enhances the lift.

  • A preliminary experimental study of new concept air hybrid engine, which stores compressed air in the tank during braking and re-use it to propel vehicle during crusing or acceleration, was carried out in this study. A single cylinder engine was modified to realize the concept of air hybrid engine. Independent variable valve lift system was adopted in one of the exhaust valves to store the compressed air into the air tank during compression period. An air injector module was installed in the place of spark plug, and the stored compressed air was supplied during the expansion period to realize air motoring mode. For air compression mode, the tank with volume of 30 liter could be charged up to more than 13 bar. By utilizing this stored compressed air, motoring work of 0.41 bar of IMEP(Indicated mean effective pressure) at maximum can be generated at the 800rpm conditions, which is higher than the case of normal idle condition by 1.1 bar of IMEP.

  • Au-black for the application of the long wavelength infrared absorber has been prepared by evaporating Au under nitrogen gas-filled low vacuum condition. Characteristics of the deposited Au-black were carefully investigated through structural analysis, infrared absorbance measurement, and patterning of the layer, all of which are dependent on the deposition condition. High density of micro-cavity that trapped infrared were obtained, and infrared absorbance in the wavelength range from 3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ to 14 $\mu\textrm{g}$ was found to be about 90% when the Au-black layer was produced under the deposition condition of mass Per area of about 600 $\mu\textrm{g}$/cm$^{2}$ and chamber pressure of above 1 Torr. Photoresist lift-off process could be performed to pattern the Au-black, of which mass per area was below 900 $\mu\textrm{g}$/cm/ sup 2/. In view of absorbance, heat capacity, and pattern formation, the deposition condition of chamber pressure of about 1 Tow and mass per area of about 600$\mu\textrm{g}$/cm$^{2}$ was most adequate for preparing the Au-black as an infrared absorber.

  • In this paper, we propose a whole-body management system using ultra-low temperature cyclical cooling method combined with IT technology. The proposed system has the following characteristics. First, it minimizes maintenance costs by circulating nitrogen gas cooled by ultra-low temperature inside the controller. Secondly, based on the information measured by the temperature sensor and oxygen concentration sensor, nitrogen gas is supplied to provide safe ultra-low temperature whole-body management. Thirdly, after entering the user's height, it provides convenient, ultra-low temperature whole-body care that can be controlled using an automatic lift. Fourth, it provides an easy-to-access, easy-to-manage GUI and a manager-only web program for whole-body management system operation. The results tested by the authorized testing agency to assess the performance of the proposed system were measured in the range of ±5%, the world's highest temperature sensor accuracy, and a range of -110℃ to -150℃ greater than the world's highest whole-body management temperature range(-110℃ ~ -140℃). In addition, humidity was measured at less than 40%, the world's highest, and oxygen concentration was more than 18%, the world's highest. Therefore, the effectiveness of the methods proposed in this paper was demonstrated because they produced the same results as the world's highest levels.

  • In the present paper, the hydrodynamic characteristics of three dimensional hydrofoils moving with a constant speed below the free surface using a higher-order boundary element method based on 9-node Lagrangian curvilinear elements are investigated. A bi-quadratic spline scheme is employed to improve the numerical results on the free surface. To validate the present scheme, the calculated results are compared with the analytic solutions for a submerged sphere and a spheroid showing a good agreement. For the validation of the hydrofoil study, the computed lift and drag of a hydrofoil having $NACA64_{1}A412$ section with aspect ratio(A.R.) of 4 are compared with the experimental data by Wadlin et al.[28]. The comparison covers a number of variations of angle of attack and submergence depth. Then, using an A.R. hydrofoil with NACA0012 section, the free surface on the lift and drag are investigated and these are compared with the previous results. The wave elevations and patterns created by the aforementioned submerged bodies are also investigated with Froude numbers and submergences.

  • Selective nitrification and granulation have been carried out in a pilot scale air-lift sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for stable and economical nitrogen removal from wastewater. The SBR showed about 100% nitrification efficiency up to 1.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, about 90% efficiency at 1.0-2.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$, and it was less than 90% when the load was higher than 2.0 kg ${NH_4}^+-N/m^3{\cdot}d$. Nitrite accumulation was induced by selective inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria by free ammonia inhibition and dissolved oxygen limitation. For the purpose, high nitrite ratio (> 0.95) was obtained by keeping the pH higher than 8.0 and dissolved oxygen lower than 1.5 mg/L. In addition, sludge granulation was achieved by keeping reactor settling time to 5 minutes to wash out poor settling sludge and to promote the growth of granulation sludge. The operation accelerated sludge granulation and the sludge volume index (SVI) decreased and stably maintained to less than 75 in 60 days.
