  • Purpose: To describe the performance in the health-promoting lifestyle and to identify the major factors affecting the health-promoting relationships between self care behaviors and health promoting lifestyle profile in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Method: A convenience sample for this study was 172 pulmonary tuberculosis patients who have taken TB medications in urban city. The HPLP-II was selected to measure the concept of health-promoting lifestyle because of the number of research studies conducted using both the original HPLP and the revised HPLP-II. The statistical methods used in this study were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression. Result: The differences of the HPLP-II were found to have a significance of age, marital status, education level, and health service center. The level of self care behaviors was related positively to the level of health promoting lifestyle and their subcategories. Based on stepwise multiple regression analysis, the model that predicted factors included self care behaviors, age, health service center and education. Conclusion: After decades of decreasing rates, TB has reemerged as a serious national problem in Korea. The careful clinical management and more national concern of TB may help to improve the outcomes of many patients. The findings of this study suggest that TB patients who are more fulfilled in health-promoting lifestyles and self-care behaviors may be able to make better decisions regarding positive health-promoting behaviors.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze factors affecting intention to use a paid health promotion service by using the health belief model. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted with 276 health check-up participants aged ${\geq}20$ at a local medical center in Korea from November 8 to November 24, 2010. Results: 53.6% of the respondents had intention to use a paid health promotion service, and around 85% of them were willing to pay for 'less than five thousand won per month'. Factors affecting the intention to use paid the service was age, education, income, and health check-up experience. In terms of health belief model constructs, people had greater intention to use a paid the service when they perceived to be sensitive to lifestyle associated diseases and recognized advantages of health promotion services. Conclusions: Approximately half of the respondents had intention to use a paid health promotion service. Reasonable price for the service was less than five thousand Korean won per month. Health promotion service act and services should consider these findings.

  • Purpose: This quasi-experimental study was performed to investigate the effects of a health promotion program(HPP) on self-efficacy, healthy lifestyle and blood lipid profile in employees with hyperlipidemia. Methods: The subjects were forty-three employees who were diagnosed as having hyperlipidemia during routine health examination at two worksites in Seoul in 2001. Of the forty-three subjects, thirty were allocated to the experimental group and the remaining thirteen were allocated to the control group. Data were collected from September 24, 2001 to March 16, 2002. The HPP was applied to the experimental group for 11 weeks and included health education, diet counseling, watching videos, conference, and so on. The health education included information about exercise, smoking cessation, and abstinence from drinking alcohol and seven sessions of hyperlipidemia education. The experimental group was requested to keep a daily health promotion lifestyle diary. This diary was analyzed by a dietician and subjects were instructed based on the results. As for data analyses, wilcoxon signed rank test and wilcoxon rank sum test and x2-test were carried out using SAS program. Results: 1. Self-efficacy scores of the experimental group were significantly more increased than those of the control group (experimental: 5.86 10.80, control: -4.04 11.91, p=0.018). 2. Healthy lifestyle scores of the experimental group were significantly more increased than those of the control group (experimental: 0.19 0.26, control: -0.05 0.29, p=0.024). 3. Blood total cholesterol values of the experimental group were significantly more decreased than those of the control group (experimental: -13.07 30.10mg/dl, control: 10.00 26.57mg/dl, p=0.033). 4. Blood triglyceride values of the experimental group were significantly more decreased than those of the control group (experimental: -29.17 192.40mg/dl, control: 63.31 107.53mg/dl, p=0.050). Conclusion: These findings indicate that the HHP could be effective in improving self-efficacy, healthy lifestyle and blood HDL cholesterol and decreasing blood total cholesterol in employees with hyperlipidemia. Therefore, the HHP could be suggested as an effective nursing intervention for employees in the worksite by ultimately preventing cerebral and cardiac vessel complications related to hyperlipidemia.

  • Purpose: This study was to develop an online 'alternative therapy and health promotion' class for university students and to evaluate its changes. Method: The online class was developed based on the Instructional Systems Development(ISD) model and model of Web-Based Instruction(WBI) developmental process. This was a quasi-experimental, one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this study were 130 students in 3 universities, and they were provided the cyber class for 16 weeks. Data was analyzed by descriptive and plural answer statistics, and paired t-test. Results: The cyber class was developed in five steps : analysis, design, data collection and reconstruction, programing and publishing, and evaluation. The results of program evaluation were positive, which included learning 3.47. system 3.57, and learning satisfaction 3.64 on the scale of 5. The posttest scores of cognition and reliability of alternative therapy were higher than pretest scores. The posttest score of health promoting lifestyle(t=-5.051, p=.000) and perceived health status(t=2.979, p=.003) were significantly higher than those of the pretest. Conclusion: These results suggest that the cyber class is a positive method in increasing a cognition, reliability of alternative therapy, and is effective to improve a health promotion lifestyle and perceived health status for the university students.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 81 adults who took medical examination at a general hospital health clinic in Cheonan city. The instruments used in this study were the motivation scale and modified HPLP. For data collection, the first survey was conducted from March 16 to April 19, 2001, and the second survey was carried out by mail three months after the medical examination from June 16 to July 19, 2001. Results: 1. The age of the subjects ranged from 26 to 66 years, 71.6% were male, and the major group was office workers(43.2%). 2. The average score of motivation scale was significantly improved in three months to 520.7(SD=82.7). All sub-scales of motivation scale, self-efficacy(t=-4.204, p=.000), perceived benefits(t=-4.263, p=.000), perceived barriers (t=4.305, p=.000), and emotional salience (t=-6.169, p=.000) showed significant improvements in 3 months. 3. The average score of health-promoting lifestyle was significantly increased to 62.5 (SD=9.8) (t=-5.111, p=.000) after 3 months. Health responsibility(t=-6.098, p=.000), eating habit(t=-3.625, p=.001), exercise(t=-2.557, p=.012), and smoking habit(t=-2.157, p=.034) showed significant improvement. But stress management was not changed at the significant level in 3 months(t=-1.832, p=.071). 4. As the result of multiple regression analysis, it was found that perceived barriers, self-efficacy and monthly mean income had a significant influence on health-promoting lifestyle in 3 months after the medical examination. These variables explained 42.4% of variance in health-promoting lifestyle in 3 months after the medical examination. Conclusion: Periodic medical examination and guidance for healthy lifestyle was effective to change the motivation and to improve health promoting lifestyle.

The data were collected from April to July, 1996 using self-administered questionnaires. Data analyses were conducted using stepwise multiple regression, Pearson's correlation coefficients, 1-test, and ANOVA. Results : Health promoting lifestyle was significantly different by age, religion, occupation, and the length of residence. Those insured and those with no current medial diagnosis revealed significantly higher score in health promoting lifestyle than their counterparts. As for the level of anxiety, significant differences were found by educational level, marital status, occupation, income, and the length of residence. Self-esteem varied significantly by education, marital status, occupation, income, and the length of residence.
