Biological Control of Root-Knot Nematodes by Organic Acid-Producing Lactobacillus brevis WiKim0069 Isolated from Kimchi

  • Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) are among the most destructive plant-parasites worldwide, and RKN control has been attempted mainly using chemical nematicides. However, these chemical nematicides have negative effects on humans and the environment, thus necessitating the search for eco-friendly alternative RKN control methods. Here, we screened nematicidal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from kimchi and evaluated their efficacy as biocontrol agents against RKNs. Of 237 bacterial strains, Lactobacillus brevis WiKim0069 showed the strongest nematicidal activity against the second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita, M. arenaria, and M. hapla and inhibited the egg hatch of M. incognita. The culture filtrate of WiKim0069 had a pH of 4.2 and contained acetic acid (11,190 ㎍/ml), lactic acid (7,790 ㎍/ml), malic acid (470 ㎍/ml), and succinic acid (660 ㎍/ml). An artificial mixture of the four organic acids produced by WiKim0069 also induced 98% M. incognita J2 mortality at a concentration of 1.25%, indicating that its nematicidal activity was derived mainly from the four organic acids. Application of WiKim0069 culture filtrate suppressed the formation of galls and egg masses on tomato roots by M. incognita in a dose-dependent manner in a pot experiment. The fermentation broth of WiKim0069 also reduced gall formation on melon under field conditions, with a higher efficacy (62.8%) than that of fosthiazate (32.8%). This study is the first report to identify the effectiveness of kimchi LAB against RKNs and to demonstrate that the organic acids produced by LAB can be used for the RKN management.

Construction of Kobe′s World Cup Venue and the Development of an Urban Resort

  • The usual definition of and urban resort was a place vastly different from places of daily life such as a theme park or other tourist destination. At the same time, revival of the combination of usual and unusual spaces, in a way like the mixed "Hare"(Special occasion of public event) and "Ke"(Daily life) spaces of communities of old Japan, is part of the idea of urban resorts. And they are places, which start by making a comfortable urban environment for citizens, providing a daily life full of culture and promoting a city′s identity to visitors. if we think about the kinds of structural elements of urban resorts, the usual elements include community, local culture and industry, while the unusual elements include symbols, festivities and interaction. Kobe Wing Stadium is a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup hosted by Korea and Japan. The city will build the stadium, but after construction management will be given over to private enterprise, hoping to utilize that sector′s business know how. A competition was held to determine the private executor who would be entrusted with the planning, design, construction and management of the project, considering the conditions of the area, the stadium′s relationship to it and local revitalization. The competition was won by a private enterprise (Kobe Steel Obayashi Group). The them of "Creation of a Sports Community Park" grapples with the large issue of the facility′s relationship with the community. American geographer Yi-fu Tuan coined the word "topophilia" to indicate love of a place. No other word could better describe the desired urban resort nature of the stadium. From this historical perspective it seems that stadiums have great potential as urban resorts. The factor that will determine their success is the attitude of citizens toward them, in short whether they develop topophilia for them or not. We examined the urban resort nature of Kobe Wing Stadium. Regarding daily life, we saw the attempts to revive the local community, the possibility of deepening the local culture and the weakened state of local industry. As a place that is for more than daily life, we saw the certainty of the stadium′s symbolism, its potential as a place for festivities and the test it will face as a space for interaction. Even though several issues are left for future resolution, evaluating Kobe Wing Stadium through these elements of an urban resort, it is clearly founded in the daily life of the community while providing a venue for "Hare"occasions. Fulfilling the roles of an urban resort, it provides many opportunities for local residents to enjoy their and gives visitors a reason to come repeatedly.

여헌(旅軒) 한시(漢詩)에 나타난 대나무(竹)의 이미지 -현실인식(現實認識)과 삶의 지향(志向)을 중심으로- (The Image of Bamboo from Yeoheon Chang Hyun-kwang's Poetry - Focusing on his view of world and attitude to life)

  • 본고는 여헌(旅軒) 장현광(張顯光)의 한시 속에 등장하는 주요 이미지인 '대나무(죽(竹))'의 이미지를 분석하여 그것이 가지는 상징적 의미를 밝히는 데에 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 먼저 은거의 계기로서 여헌의 현실인식과 출처관을 살펴보았다. 여헌은 당대의 현실을 '강상(綱常)이 실추(失墜)된 것'으로 인식하였다. 여헌이 살았던 선조, 광해군, 인조대는 4번의 전란과 인조반정, 이괄의 난, 정치세력 간의 대립과 갈등, 사회경제구조의 변화, 지배질서체제의 이완 등 대내외적으로 불안정하고 어려운 시기였다. 이러한 현실 속에서 위로는 위정자로부터 아래로는 백성에 이르기까지 모든 사람들이 인륜의 근간이 되는 강상윤리를 무시하고 일신의 안위와 이익만을 추구하기에 급급하였다. 따라서 여헌은 강상이 실추된 현실 속에서 출사할 마땅한 의리를 찾지 못하고 은거를 선택하게 된 것이다. 그리고 여헌이 은거 후에 지향한 삶의 태도는 대나무의 이미지를 통해 드러나고 있는 바, 완성된 인격을 바탕으로 강상(綱常)의 사표(師表)로 살아가고자 하는 의지라 할 수 있다. 여헌의 시에는 일반 대나무와 길재가 심은 대나무가 그 의미에 있어서 차이를 드러낸다. 일반 대나무는 불변함과 고결함의 이미지를 지니고 있지만, 여헌이 지향한 삶의 태도로서 길재의 대나무는 백이숙제의 고죽과 기욱의 대나무의 이미지를 동시에 지니고 있었다. 즉, 백이 숙제의 고죽은 부정한 현실에 동참하지 않고 변함없이 은거하는 삶을 살아가겠다는 은거에의 확고한 의지를, 기욱의 대나무는 학문 수양을 통해 완성된 인격의 경지에 이르는 것이었다. 여헌이 금오산 정상에서 길재가 심은 대나무를 찾아보고는 '어느 곳인들 대나무가 없겠는가마는 나는 선생이 심으신 이 대나무를 사랑한다오'라고 하며 대나무의 이미지를 빙(氷), 철(鐵), 옥(玉) 등의 더 차갑고, 더 단단하고, 더 강인한 것으로 강화시킨 것도, 단단해진 인격을 바탕으로 강상의 사표로 살아가고자 삶의 지향이었던 것이다.

Phylogenetic Analysis of HERV-K LTR Family in Human Chromosome Xq26 and New World Monkeys

  • Solitary long terminal repeats(LTRs) of human endogenous retrovirus K family(HERV-K) have been found to be coexpressed with sequences of closely located genes. It has been suggested that HERV-K LTR-like elements entered the primate genome approximately 33-40 million years ago. WE investigated the presence of HERV-K LTR elements in New World monkeys using PCR amplification. Six LTR elements of HERV-K family were identified from New World monkeys, represented by the squirrel and night monkeys. They showed a high degree of sequence homology(96-99%) with the human-specific HERV-K LTR elements. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that an LTR element (SM-1) from the squirrel monkey and another LTR element (NM-1) from the night monkey are very closely related to the human-specific HERV-K LTR elements with low degree of divergence. This finding suggests that some of LTR elements of HERV-K family have recently been proliferated in New World monkeys. A sequence in chromosome Xq26(AL034407) \ulcorner contains an HERV-K LTR element was shown to be present in the human genome, but is absent in the bonobo, chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and gibbon. It has more than 99% homology to other human-specific HERV-K LTR elements. This sequence thus represents and isolated insertion of an evolving class of elements that may have made a particular contribution to human genomic plasticity.

Paper Recycling of South Korea and its Effects on Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Forest Conservation

  • The study evaluates the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential of paper recycling by paper industry in South Korea and determines the positive impact on global warming by conserving the world's forests through decreasing pulp wood use. South Korea is one of the leading countries in the world thai recycle papers with a collection rate of 71.8 percent and a recycling rate of 74.4 percent in 2005. Greenhouse gas emission reduction potential in terms of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) equivalent from paper recycling was assessed scientifically by the use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Three types of papers including newsprint, container-board, and white-board were used for assessment in this study. Results of this study indicate that $CO_2$ emission reduction potential of recycling paper varies according to its types and recycling rates. Greenhouse gas emission reduction factor of 0.74869 $tCO_2$ per ton of recycled paper was derived from this study. In applying this factor. it was found out that the South Korean paper industry reduced GHG emission of around 6,364,550 $tCO_2$ by recycling paper in 2005. With this. the country's paper industry could claim that by recycling in thai particular year. approximately $23.8million\;m^3$ of woods were not harvested and thus 212,500 ha of world's forests were estimated to be saved in that particular year. Overall. it could be concluded that the Korean paper industry was able to reduce $CO_2$ emission and was able to conserve world's forests by its high rates of paper recycling.

주요 콩 생산국의 생산변동 조정유형과 무역전이효과 분석 (Adjusting Patterns of Production Fluctuation and Trade Transmission Effect of Major Soybean Production Countries on World Market)

  • 본 연구에서는 우리나라의 대표적 수입 곡물인 콩의 주요 교역국들의 생산, 소비, 무역 및 재고 동향과 각국의 생산변동에 따른 조정유형 분석을 수행한 후, 이를 바탕으로 각국의 국제시장 전이효과를 계측하였다. 분석결과 최근 콩의 국제시장 전이효과가 주요 생산국인 브라질, 파라과이, 캐나다 등을 중심으로 증대되고 있으며, 대부분의 국가가 재고보다는 소비와 무역을 통해 생산변동을 조절하고 있는 것으로 나타나 국제 콩시장의 불안정성 증가가 예상된다. 따라서 대규모 콩 수입국인 우리나라는 일정량의 국내생산기반 유지, 적절한 재고정책의 활용, 선물시장의 활용, 수입선 다변화 등과 같은 해외조달능력의 향상을 통한 안정적인 국내 콩 수급 방안 마련이 시급한 것으로 나타났다.

장수명 공동주택의 관리자 유지관리 지침(I) (The Maintenance Guideline of Long-Life Housing for the Manager(I))

  • The general housing causes various environmental problems on the squandering of the resources and the production of the construction wastes, as it was removed and rebuilt because of the short-life in 20-30 years after constructing. The short-life of the general housing makes the rebuilt-term short and takes a negative attitude in maintenance. In the other hand, the long-life housing is constantly dwelling house that considers the carbon reduction among the world issues, Support and Infill. The long-life housing promotes the durability of Support and maximize the variability of Infill through separation of Support & Infill. It's useful dwelling house in maintenance as well as various life-cycle and life style. As the maintenance guideline of dwelling house is used for long-life housing, there is not distinction considering who controls maintenance and there is not conception considering alteration, variability and convenience. Consequently, it is required to develop the proper maintenance guideline applied maintenance process for long-life housing. Therefore this study shows efficient maintenance guideline for manager in long-life housing.

문헌정보학에 있어서 일상생활 연구의 방법론적 함의 - 최근 연구동향을 중심으로 - (Methodological Implications of Everyday Life Research in Library and Information Science - With Special Reference to Current Research Trends -)

  • 문헌정보학의 연구방법이 지나치게 실증주의 쪽으로 경도되어 있다는 것은 주지의 사실이다. 근래, 이것이 국내외적으로 비판의 대상이 되고 있기도 하다. 오늘날 연구자들은-문헌정보학은 인간학의 측면에서 연구될 필요가 있다고 주장한다. 현상학적인 관점에 따라 주관적 접근을 시도해야 한다는 것이다. 이들은 문헌정보학이 사서, 이용자, 관리자 둥의 형태로 다분히 '인간적' 요소와 관련이 있다는 정에 주목한다. 이 글에서는 관련 질적연구의 성과를 검토하고 특히 문헌정보학에서 일상생활 연구의 함의를 심도있게 따진다.

위암 수술 환자에서의 삶의 질 (Quality of Life in Patients with Stomach Cancer after Operation)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to explore quality of life (QOL) in patients with stomach cancer by using the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL) Instrument- Korean version. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one (31) patients with stomach cancer after curative resection were recruited with informed consent. Age- and gender-matched hospital staff served as controls. The 100-item WHOQOL Instrument, including physical domain, psychological domain, social domain, independence domain, environment domain, and spiritual domain, was employed for the all subjects. Results: In patients with stomach cancer after operation, only two domains, physical and independence, were associated with worse quality of life. In those domains, patients with advanced stage, with total gastrectomy, with adjuvant chemotherapy, and early or late postoperative period ($\leqq$2 years or >5 years after operation), could be perceived of having a worse quality of life. Conclusion: Not only scientific objective success but also individual subjective perception of condition could be important for managing patients with stomach carcinomas after curative resection. In this context, the WHOQOL reflecting multi-dimensional state of well being could be a useful tool across a variety of cultural and value systems in the world.

2011 대구세계육상선수권대회 100 m 남자 결승전 중간질주구간의 운동학적 분석 (Kinematic Analysis of Mid-Race in Men's 100-m Final during IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide scientific information to track and field coaches and athletes through the analyses of the biomechanics characteristics of the top 4 sprinters in the men's 100 m final in the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. Twelve video cameras (Sony, Japan) were used to capture the mid portion of the race (40 m - 70 m) with a sampling frequency of 60Hz. Biomechanical variables including the right ankle, knee and hip angles, the trunk angle, and the velocity of center of mass (COM) in the running direction, were calculated with the Kwon 3D program (Visol, Korea). Correlation coefficients between the COM velocity and each variables were calculated using Matlab 2008a (MathWorks, USA) at an alpha level of 0.05. The findings indicated that Yohan Blake (JAM) showed greater range of motion at the ankle and hip. Walter Dix(USA) showed greater knee and trunk movement, and Kim Collins (SKN) showed more dorsi-flexed and extended trunk angles during the race. Finally, Christophe Lemaitre (FRA) showed more plantar-flexed ankle with a less trunk motion, throughout the analyzed race.
