  • Manure compost biofilter for reducing ammonia emissions at the active stage of a semi air tight and agitated bed composting of hog manure amended with sawdust were evaluated in the practical composting plant(75 m 5 m $\times$1.4 m deep). During 55 days of composting and biofiltration process, the manure compost biofilter had a ammonia reduction of 91 to 98%. Results showed that the active stage of composting maintained temperatures between 40 and 7$0^{\circ}C$ and fluctuated greatly the ammonia concentrations between 100 and 300 ppm. Ammonia concentrations in manure compost biofiltration reached within a moderate range (2-18 ppm).

  • Hospice movement in Taiwan emerged early in 1983. There was a nurse visiting terminal cancer patients by herself in Taipei city. It was ceased after one year. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "compassionate era". In early 1990, the first in-patient hospice ward was set up in north Taiwan. She demonstrated high touch in the high technology medical atmosphere. There was a great echo in Taiwan society to this action. In the following years, quite a few new hospice settings were founded. Medical professionals were aroused again to talk and think about life and death, dignity of dying and holistic care. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "ethical stage". Around 2000, obstructions were discovered in our development. We do need system and rules. Standard of setting and care, Curriculum of education and training, Accreditation system and specialist system and Nature Death Act are some of the systems we approached. This stage of hospice movement might be called as "Act stage". Among the "Act stage", the Nature Death Act is actually the mile stone in our history. • Cyclic AMP-mediated signaling pathways regulate a number of cellular functions. In this study, we examined the regulatory role of cAMP signaling pathways in chondrogenesis of chick limb bud mesenchymal cells in vitro. Forskolin, which increases cellular cAMP levels by the activation of adenylate cyclase, enhanced chondrogenic differentiation. Inhibition of PKA with specific inhibitors (H89 or KT5720) blocked pre-cartilage condensation stage, indicating that chondrogenesis is regulated by the increase in cellular cAMP level and subsequent activation of PKA. Downstream signaling pathway of PKA leading to gene expression was investigated by examination of several nuclear transcription factors. Forskolin treatment increased transcription level for a cartilage-specific marker gene Sox9. However, inhibition of PKA with H89 led to restore expression of Sox9, indicating PKA activity was required to regulate the expression of Sox9 in chondrogenesis. In addition, CREB was highly phosphorylated at early stage of mesenchyme culture, and followed by progressive dephosphorylation. CBP and ATF, another CRE related proteins were transiently expressed at the early stage of chondrogenesis with a pattern similar to CREB phosphorylation. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed that the binding activity of CREB to the CRE is closely correlated to the phosphorylation pattern of CREB. Therefore, cAMP-mediated signal transduction to nuclear events for the induction of genes appeared to be required at the early stage of chick limb bud chondrogenesis.

  • Oogenesis, the gonadosomatic index (GSI), reproductive cycle and first sexual maturation of the female Neptunea (Barbitonia) arthritica cumingii have been investigated by light and electron microscope observations. In the early vitellogenic oocyte, the Golgi complex and mitochondria were involved in the formation of glycogen, lipid droplets and yolk granules. In late vitellogenic oocytes, the rough endoplasmic reticulum and multivesicular bodies were involved in the formation of proteid yolk granules in the cytoplasm. In particular, compared with the results of other gastropods, it is a different result that appearances of cortical granules at the cortical layer and microvilli on the vitelline envelope, which is associated with heterosynthetic vitellogenesis, were not observed in vitellogenic oocytes during oogenesis. A mature yolk granule was composed of three components: main body (central core), superficial layer, and the limiting menbrane, Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index in females were studied in 2002 and 2003 were closely associated with ovarian developmental phases. Spawning occurred between May and August in 2002 and 2003 and the main spawning occurred between June and July when the seawater temperature rose to approximately 18${\sim}$23${\circ}$C. The female reproductive cycle can be classified into five successive stages: early activestage (Septmber to October), late active stage ( November to February), ripe stage (February to June), partially spawned stage (May to Aygust), and recovery stage (June to August).

  • In this study, we report the industrial application of an efficient technology for the recovery of gallic acid from Chinese nutgall processing wastewater. The recovery of gallic acid by industrial scale extraction and stripping devices was performed, with tributyl phosphate as the extractant and kerosene as the diluent. The results showed that the theoretical extraction stage was four, while the theoretical stripping stage was two. A closed-cycle system was studied for the continuous countercurrent extraction and stripping, with a five-stage extraction device and a three-stage reflux stripping device. The results showed that the multistage extraction-stripping system could steadily run for a long period, the average gallic acid level in the raffinate was $0.85g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, and the gallic acid content recovered in the strip liquor was higher than $120g{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The average extraction yield of gallic acid was 94.14%. When the strip liquor was used as raw material for production, the average production yield increased by 8.64%. In addition, after extraction, the $COD_{Cr}$ in the wastewater decreased by 38.19%, and the biodegradability of wastewater improved by 1.6 times. This study provided a new impetus for the sustainable development of the Chinese nutgall processing industry.

  • The thermal degradation of poly(hexamethylene guanidine) phosphate (PHMG) was studied by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-GC/MS (p-GC). Thermal degradation of PHMG occurs in three different processes, such as dephosphorylation, sublimation/vaporization of amine compounds and decomposition/ recombination of hydrocarbon residues. The kinetic parameters of each stage were calculated from the Kissinger, Friedman and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The Chang method was also used for comparison study. To investigate the degradation mechanisms of the three different stages, the Coats-Redfern and the Phadnis-Deshpande methods were employed. The probable degradation mechanism for the first stage was a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type. However, a power law and a diffusion mechanism, $D_n$ type, were operated for the second degradation stage, whereas a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type, were operated again for the third degradation stage of PHMG. The theoretical weight loss against temperature curves, calculated by the estimated kinetic parameters, well fit the experimental data, thereby confirming the validity of the analysis method used in this work. The life-time predicted from the kinetic equation is a valuable guide for the thermal processing of PHMG.

  • This study examined the different meal duration expectations and dining characteristics of customers each stage of service (order, cook, check), and investigated the impact of perceived meal duration on customers' satisfaction. The procedures consisted of four phases. During the first phase, the different meal duration expectations and dining characteristics of customers of an Italian restaurant in Seoul were examined by survey at each stage of service. The second phase investigated the impact of perceived meal duration on customer' satisfaction. The third phase compared perceived meal duration and actual meal duration. The last phase suggested appropriate meal duration for maximization of customer' satisfaction. We also examined the effects of meal time (lunch or dinner) on meal duration preferences. Customer satisfaction was decreased with longer perceived meal duration for the order and check stages and too short perceived meal duration for the cook stage. To determine appropriate meal duration for each service stage, the relationship between perceived and actual meal durations was examined. This study confirms that customers dining at restaurants preferred a longer cook time and that a shorter meal duration at dinner decreased satisfaction ratings more when compared to lunch.

  • Salt tolerance was evaluated at the young seedling stage of rice (Oryza sativa L.) using recombinant inbred lines (MG RILs) from a cross between Milyang 23 (japonica/indica) and Gihobyeo (japonica). 22 of 164 MG RILs were classified as tolerant with visual scores of 3.5-5.0 in 0.7% NaCl. Interval mapping of QTLs related to salt tolerance was conducted on the basis of the visual scores at the young seedling stage. Two QTLs, qST1 and qST3, conferring salt tolerance, were detected on chromosome 1 and 3, respectively, and the total phenotypic variance explained by the two QTLs was 36.9% in the MG RIL population. qST1 was the major QTL explaining 27.8% of the total phenotypic variation. qST1 was flanked by Est12~RZ569A, and qST3 was flanked by RG179~RZ596. The detection of new QTLs associated with salt tolerance will provide important information for the functional analysis of rice salt tolerance.

  • Recently the steel parts used at automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before in need of the weight down. To achieve this requirement of a high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion content and surface defect as like decarburization, surface roughness etc.. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to Dow the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of shot peening of two-stage shot peening and single-stage shot peening. And for this study, three kinds of spring steel (JISG4081-SUP7, SAE 9254, DON 50CrV4) are made. This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from (1) Decreasing the surface roughness (2) Unchanging the surface hardness (3) Increasing the compressive residual stress. But, results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of hish hardness.
