Nurse's Conflict Experience toward End-of-life Medical Decision-making (말기의 의료적 의사결정에 관한 임상간호사의 갈등경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore clinical nurse's reported conflict experience toward end-of-life medical decision making. Methods: Data were collected by in-depth interviews with eight nurses from three different wards of university hospital in D city of Korea. Conventional qualitative analysis was used to analyze the data. Results: Results were three major themes and twelve categories from the analysis. The three major themes were prioritization of treatment, non-disclosure of diagnosis, and hierarchical and power relations. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that shared decision making in end of life among patient, family members, physician, and nurse may contribute to improve end-of-life care performance as well as dignified dying of patient in end of life.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct the family support system and suggest various policies for work-life balance to create the family-friendly society. For this purpose, this study showed the theoretical background for constitution of integrated family support system-community, government and business. Especially, this study emphasized that family-centered viewpoint to the policy is needed and that support for worklife balance not work-family balance should be enlarged. Various policies were suggested in three parts and the role of community was emphasized. Finally, this study presented the necessity of laws and committee for work-life balance and role of healthy family-support center for work-life balance.

A Study of Spiritual Well-Being, Depression, and Life Satisfaction of Students Majoring in Human Service Area (휴먼서비스 전공분야 대학생의 영적안녕과 우울 및 삶의 만족도에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between spiritual well-being, depression and life satisfaction majoring in human service area. Methods: The subjects were 212 college students. Data was collected from september 15 to October 26, 2009 using questionnaires. Means with standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results: According to general characteristics of the students, there were statistically significant differences in spiritual well-being for religion and religious influence, in depression, there was statistically significant difference for health status, and in life satisfaction, there were statistically significant differences monthly pocket money, health status, current survival parents status, current problem. significant correlations were seen between spiritual well-being and depression (r=-.386, p =.000), life satisfaction (r=.536, p =.000). Conclusion: Spiritual well-being was significantly effects on depression and the life satisfaction. The finding suggest that it is needed to develop effective programs to improve spiritual well-being for college students.

Factors Influencing Health Conservation among Elders (노인의 건강보존정도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the predictors of health conservation for elders in Korea. Method: Random sampling method was used and data from 113 elders were used for final analysis. Data collection was conducted through the use of questionnaires which were constructed to include Health Conservation Scale, Purpose in Life Test and Self-efficacy Scale. Results: Health conservation of the elders was in the middle range. The elders of this study had few goals towards meaning in life, and were in an existential vacuum state. There was a positive correlation between health conservation, meaning in life and self-efficacy. The significant factors influencing health conservation of elders were meaning in life, education level and gender. These 3 factors explained 30.6% of health conservation of elders. Conclusions: The results indicate that health conservation is an important link with meaning in life in elders. There should be a comprehensive study in the future for in-depth understanding of health conservation of elders.

Structural Relationship among the Life Stress, Depression, Suicidal Ideation of Adolescents (청소년의 생활스트레스, 우울 및 자살생각의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationship among the life stress, depression, suicidal ideation of adolescent. Methods: Participants for this study included 285 students from five middle schools located in Seoul and Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea. The SPSS 18.0 program and AMOS 18.0 program were used for analysis of data. Results: The characteristics of this study were to analyze causal relationship with latent variables by considering measurement error and to grasp direct effect, indirect effect and total effect. Life stress and depression were found to be factors influencing suicidal ideation. Depression was a direct factor and life stress was a indirect factor. The effects of depression as a mediator between life stress and suicidal ideation were significant statistically. Conclusion: The findings of this study may provide useful assistance in development of effective nursing interventions for prevention and management of middle school students' suicidal ideation.

The Relationships between Academic Stress and Adjustment at University Life in Korean University Students (대학생의 학업 스트레스와 학교생활적응)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to identify the correlations among academic stress and adjustment at university life in university students. Methods: A total of 489 subjects aged 17 and 36 were selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected with a self reported questionnaire from September 2 to November 30, 2015. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN. Results: There were statistical differences between academic stress and adjustment at university life. Academic stress were significantly different according to gender, grade, economic status, health status major department of study, drinking and smoking. Adjustment at university life were significantly different according to gender, economic status, health status. 25.4% of variance in adjustment at university life were explained by academic stress, major department of study, health status. Conclusion: The finding of this study may be useful in understanding the academic stress expression of university students and developing more specific programs on adjustment at university life.

Predictors of Quality of Life among Grandparents Raising Their Grandchildren: An Ecological Approach

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine factors affecting quality of life among grandparents raising their grandchildren. Methods: This study carried out a secondary analysis of data from the 2014 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) and Statistics Korea. Data collected from 224 grandparents who reported raising their grandchildren were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient, and multilevel regression analysis. Results: The mean score of the participants' quality of life was 62.63. Significant predictors of quality of life of the grandparents included subjective health status, last year's total house income, number of last year's travels, frequency of last year's movie seeing, and number of children's parks per 100,000 population. Conclusion: These results suggest that public health nurses in improving quality of life of grandparents focus on children's parks and formal social supports as community factors as well as regular exercise as an individual factor in order to be more effective.

A Study on the Subjectivity of the Meaning of Life for Middle-Aged Women (중년 여성의 삶의 의미에 대한 주관성 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the meaning of the life of middle-aged women. Method: The research method employed Q-methodology. Thirty-one participants rated 30 selected Q-statements on a scale of 1~7. The collected data were analyzed using PC-QUNAL software. Result: Principal component analysis identified 4 types of the meaning of the life of middle-aged women. The categories were labeled 'May I help you?', 'Alone', 'Who am I ?', 'No regret'. Conclusion: We have found meaning of life of middle-aged women through this research. The study result could be data to perform effective nursing intervention for positive life of middle-aged women.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the rural housewives' resourcs and demands financial practices and financial satisfaction according to family life cycle and to analyze the causal relationships among the components. For the latter purpose the conceptual framework based on the system theory was suggested. The results showed that first most variables were significantly different according to the family life cycle. Second except the establishing stage the conceptual framework was supported in all stages. Variables which affected financial practices and financial satisfaction varied with the family life cycle.

Sexual Life in Men After Stroke (남성 뇌졸중환자의 성생활)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate sexual life in men after stroke Methods: The subjects were 60 post-stroke patients who visited a convalescent center for disabled people in Seoul, Korea. The subjects were discharged from the hospital and received physical therapy. Six items of sexual relationship were used to measure sexual life after stroke. Results: The most common sexual changes identified after stroke included decline in satisfaction, libido, coital frequency, satisfaction, and ability to perform sexual activities. Only 20.0% of the subjects reported that they discussed sexual life with health professionals. Conclusion: The change in sexual life was perceived as negative effects on their attitude toward sexuality. Some attitudes or improper beliefs that could negatively influence sexual readjustment after stroke nay be corrected through adequate counseling. Nurses should present not only accurate information regarding sexual concerns but also they can provide health education and sexual counseling in their practice.
