The purpose of this research was conducted to formative processes and to interpret premarital adult's sexuality meaning. The interviews have been executed based upon ethnography approach and method of interview in depth within the framework of the Weis's sexual script theory (1998) and parent-children relation. The interview in depth has been conducted with unmarried 7 males and 8 females inclusive of college students, total 15 persons who were born 1974-1980 and living in Seoul and nearby suburban areas. A period of interviews were carried out from September until December 2003. Each interview was executed for 2 to 4 hours apiece, and each person had 2 to 4 interviews during the period. The result of analysis of the sexuality scripts theory from three different views indicates that the female informants appeared to rationalize the fact that traditional concept of the chastity as defined by the socio-cultural level has been changed. It also indicated that there were very few sex educations in the society at large except for the public medias including the Internet. The interrelation level indicates that positive interaction with the opposite sex has affected them in the course of their building up desirable personal relationship in the society and uplifting their sense of self-esteem. The internal level of sexuality, it is much dependent on the extent of individual inner recognition of sexuality. The parent-children relation view of sexuality, the most influential factor for their communication on sexuality lies in the extent of their realization on how positively their parents recognize their children.
This study analyzed the problem associated with inquiry centered science education and formulated some improvement Strategies for inquiry learning in the standard Korean high school course. In order to attain the goals of questionaire survey methods were used. To examine the current status of biology education, seperate questionaires were developed through an educational research and development procedure used for tearchers and student. The questionaires were developed to ask about instruction and evaluation methods, the level of inquiry learing and abstacles to it. Here are some of our results: 1) Biology instruction and learning is more knowledge-orinted than inquiry-orinted, 2) Inquiry approach in science teaching is hard to be applied because of crowed classroom conditions. 3) The material is too broad in range and too difficult in content. There is virtually nothing that can be related to everyday life. The material focusing on inquiry activities is unsatisfactorily selected and organized. 4) Effective methods of inquiry-based instruction and evaluation are not available. 5) Biology teachers are burdened with too many class hour a week and too many varieties of additional works. 6) 91.1% of biology teachers and 90.3% of students recognize that lab and field works are needed to enhance inquiry learning. However, in reality, such inquiry activities are lacking. 7) 73.3% of schools have no lab assistants. 8) The university entrance examination is the greatest factor against inquiry learning. 9) There are very few chances of in-service education for biology teachers to learn more about biology curriculum and science education theory.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of imagery therapy on "coping mechanism and type C personality of the women with mastectomy. To achieve this purpose, 2 hours sessions of imagery therapy were given to the patients with breast cancer twice a week for 6 weeks. The period of data collection was from July, 7th to August, 12th 2002. The participants were 30 patients, 15 experimental group, 15 control group who were treated at the G University hospital in J City. This study was designed using a quasi-experimental approach with non-equivalent Pre test-Post test Design. The themes for the Imagery Therapy Program were composed of Leuner's(1969) 12 Imagery Themes: flower, green-field, stream, mountain, house, woods, significant figures, rose, lion, ideal self-image, cave and volcano. The data were analyzed with ${\chi}2-test$ and MANOVA using the SPSS program. The course of image change of the 12 imagery themes was analyzed by content analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First Hypothesis, 'The score of type C personality in the women with mastectomy who received imagery therapy will be significantly lower than that of the control group' was supported(p<.05). Second Hypothesis, 'The score of coping mechanism' in the women with mastectomy who received imagery therapy will be significantly higher than that of the control group' was rejected. In conclusion, imagery therapy is suggested as an effective nursing intervention to change type C personality of the women with mastectomy, but not effective to improve coping mechanism. Therefore, the program for the women with mastectomy should be developed to change their coping mechanism, method of problem solving and Quality of life.
Objectives: To investigate the relationship between experience of hunger in childhood or adolescence and diabetes mellitus in old age. Methods: Stratified national samples of 421 men and 554 women aged 60-89 in South Korea were analyzed. Diabetes diagnosed by a doctor was used as the dependent variable. Experience of hunger in childhood was assessed with the question, "In your childhood, have you ever gone hungry with skipping a meal?" and "In your childhood, have you ever eaten porridge or some bran cake as main dish instead of rice because of lack of food?" Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated by multiple logistic regressions. Results: ORs of diabetes by experience of hunger in childhood were 1.64(95% CI 0.95-2.83) for men and 1.58(95% CI 1.01-2.47) for women. Significant association of experience of hunger in childhood with prevalence of diabetes persisted in men after adjustment for adulthood and old age socioeconomic position indicators and other risk factors(OR 1.88(95% CI 1.04-3.41)). The effect of experience of hunger in 10-19 years was more prominent than that in less than 10 years in both gender. Conclusion: Experience of hunger in childhood or adolescence may increase the risk of diabetes in Korean elders.
Medical education can provide students with an opportunity to encounter marginalized communities and motivate them to become involved with the needs of disadvantaged people. The College of Medicine of The Catholic University of Korea includes a social service program in the medical humanities and social sciences curriculum. The course has lectures on social welfare, human rights, and social service, as well as four days of social service in 'Flower Village,' which is a Catholic social welfare institution. This study analyzes the satisfaction, feedback, and reflection papers of students who completed the social service program and provides an educational model for the medical humanities and social sciences. Students' satisfaction with the program was scored at 4.23 out of 5. A qualitative study of students' reflection papers derived 7 key phrases, among which 'nature and practice of social service,' 'holistic understanding of humans,' 'empathy and communication,' and 'social responsibility' are identified as goals of this program and 'happiness,' 'respect for human life,' and 'compassion' are good indicators of students' compassionate participation. Encounters with marginalized communities within the medical curriculum allows students to serve people with social difficulties and work for the improvement of their living conditions. Students learn to approach social needs with concern and empathy and seek ways to contribute to those communities.
The purpose of this study is to compare the eighth-grade mathematics textbooks of Korea, Japan on the one hand, and those of the United States and England on the other, and to explore the implications for mathematics education in the East and the West. As a result, the dichotomy between the East and the West were set up with the sacrifice of the details. First, the textbook development and publication policies of the East are characterized as uniformity, and those of the West are diversity. Second, for the choice of content, the East and West can be represented by essential and discretionary respectively. (1) The daily life as a consumer and the importance of home management were emphasized in the curriculum contents selected in the domains of consuming and management. (2) The vocational investigation, the course education, and the development of the young generation were emphasized in the curriculum contents selected in the domains of the family living and human development. (3) The basic Knowledge of nutrition and cooking and the contents related to the food choice were emphasized in the curriculum selected in the nutrition and food. (4) The choice and care of clothing a proper personal appearance, and the contents related to the machinery and tools were emphasized in the curriculum contents selected in the clothing and textiles. (5) The economical aspects of housing, the contents of the reasonable housing choics, and the contents for vital skills were emphasized in the housing and instruments.
