Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast health promoting behaviors, mental health, and quality of life between shift nurses and non-shift nurses and to evaluate factors influencing their quality of life. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 113 non-shift nurses and 265 shift nurses who had been working at one of five hospitals in Incheon for more than one year. Descriptive statistics, ANCOVA, logistic regression, and multiple regression were used in performance of data analysis. Results: For shift nurses' mean total scores for health promoting behaviors and quality of life were significantly lower than those for non-shift nurses'(p<.05). Result of logistic regression analyses indicated that marital status (OR=2.092, 95%CI=1.174-3.729) and quality of life (OR=3.397, 95%CI=1.694-6.812) were significant between shift nurses and non-shift nurses. Non-shift work, low stress, provision of health-welfare programs, high score for health promoting behavior, and good mental health status showed an association with better quality of life (explained 48.3% of variance). Conclusion: Educational, policy, and regulatory approaches are required in order to improve mental health and quality of life for nurses, which may be influenced by their unhealthy behaviors such as irregular dietary patterns, while provision of counseling programs may be helpful to enhancement of nurses' mental health.
Objectives: We calculated life expectancy and inequalities therein by income for the period of 2016-2018 across the 253 electoral constituencies of the 20th National Assembly election in Korea. Methods: We obtained population and death data between 2016 and 2018 from the National Health Information Database and constructed abridged life tables using standard life table procedures according to gender and income quintiles for the electoral constituencies of the 20th National Assembly election held in 2016. Results: Life expectancy across the 253 constituencies ranged from 80.51 years to 87.05 years, corresponding to a gap of 6.54 years. The life expectancy difference by income across the 253 constituencies ranged from 2.94 years to 10.67 years. In each province, the difference in life expectancy by income across electoral constituencies was generally greater than the inter-constituency differences. Constituencies in capital and metropolitan areas showed a higher life expectancy and a lower life expectancy difference by income than constituencies in rural areas. Conclusions: Pro-rich inequalities in life expectancy by income existed in every electoral constituency in Korea. Both intra-constituency and inter-constituency socioeconomic inequalities in health should be highlighted in future policy-making in the National Assembly.
The purpose of the study was to investigate relationships among life satisfaction of the elderly in poor health conditions, their self esteem, health and financial status, family relationships, and social participation. A structured questionnaire was used to interview 228 elderly who were randomly selected from Sungbuk-ku, Seoul. The regression analysis showed the most powerful predictors of life satisfaction of the poor-health elderly were self esteem, relationships with their adult children, perceived financial status, relationships with grandchildren, and the amount of allowances in that order These variables accounted for 39% of life satisfaction of the sample.
This study was done describe health promoting lifestyle and to determine affecting factors in elderly based on the health promoting behaviors. The specific purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of life satisfaction, self-esteem and the demographic characteristics to health promoting lifestyle and to determine causal factors affecting the elderly. The subjects were a volunteer sample of 200 elderly in Kyungsan city. The instruments for this study were Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile(47 items), Life Satisfaction Scale(20 items) and Self-Esteem Scale(10 items). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOV A, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression technique with SAS program were used to analyze the data. The results of the study are as follows; 1) The average item score for the health promoting lifestyle was 3.3; the highest score on the sub scale was self-actualization(M=3.5) with the lowest being exercise(M=2.9) 2) Health promoting lifestyle was significantly different according to marital status and religion. 3) All of the subscales on health promoting lifestyle were positively related to life satisfaction(r=0.534, p〈0.001 and self-esteem(r=0.608, p〈0.001). The life satisfaction was positively related to self-esteem(r=0.593, p〈0.001). 4) Life satisfaction, self-esteem and marital status explained 28.04% of the variance for the total health promoting lifestyle. The results of this study show that life satisfaction, self-esteem and marital status predicted the health promoting lifestyle of the elderly. So health promoting programs that increase life satisfaction and self-esteem should be developed to promote a healthy lifestyle of the elderly.
Objectives : This study was designed to compare North Korea and South Korea in measures of the quality of life (physical quality of life index and human development index) and to investigate the impact of selected medical and socioeconomic factors on PQL variables. Data and Methods : The World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and Population Reference Bureau were the principal sources of statistical data of 121 countries. Variables included infant mortality, life expectancy at birth, literacy rate, secondary school enrollment (male and female), GNP per capita, population per doctor, daily calorie supply per capita, and a composite PQL index. The Ordinary Least Square model was employed for cross-countries analysis. Findings : Both countries under quite different political and economic systems saw big improvememts in the quality of life, reducing mortality and prolonging life expectancy during the past three decades. In recent decad, however, North Korea has experienced abrupt exacerbation in the quality of life. Significant improvements in infant mortality of the population wer attributable mainly to GNP per capita and the secondary school enrollemt of female. The principal predictors of life expectancy at birth were population per doctor, infant mortality, and literacy rate. The secondary school enrollment of female and population per doctor were significantly associated with improvements in the physical quality of life index (PQLI). Conclusion : The results of this study confirmed a point illustrated by other studies : The association between quality of life as a measure of health status and socioeconomic factors was strong and positive. The important contribution of educational attainment in general, female education level in particular to improvements in the quality of life deserves good news for building an integrated health care system in the reunified Korea, taking into account the high level of education two koreas are enjoying. Meanwhile, when a sharp drop in the quality of life has been observed in North Korea under serious economic difficulties and food shortage in recent decade, the significant contribution of economic development to improvements in the quality of life poses bad nows for reunifying Korean health care in economic terms.
This study investigated consumers' recognition on shelf life of health functional foods to set up their rational expiration date. For this study 107 male and female adults aged 20 to 59 years were randomly selected as major consumers of health functional foods. And their data were analyzed with SPSS 17.0. The questionnaire included questions asking a consumer's recognition on the shelf life of health functional foods and how to treat health function food passing its shelf life. In this study, the consumers were found to pay attentions considerably to the shelf life. But most of them did not know an accurate meaning of the shelf life of health functional food and mistook it for expiry date. In addition, the consumers doubted safety of health functional foods passing the shelf life. Therefore, education for consumers about an accurate meaning of the shelf life was needed. The results of this study were considered to be helpful to set up a reasonable expiration date for health functional food.

An index that evaluates the health level of a population group considering both death and loss of function due to disease is called a summary measure of population health (SMPH). SMPHs are broadly divided into life year indices and life expectancy indices, the latter of which comprise healthy life expectancy (HLE). HLE is included as a policy target in various national and regional level healthcare plans, and the term "HLE" is commonly used in academia and by the public. However, the overall level of understanding of HLE-such as the precise definition of HLE and methods of calculating HLE-still seems to be low. As discussed in this study, the types of HLE are classified into disability-free life expectancy, disease-free life expectancy, quality-adjusted life expectancy, self-rated HLE, and disability-adjusted life expectancy. Their characteristics are examined to facilitate a correct understanding and appropriate utilization of HLE. In addition, the Sullivan method, as a representative method for calculating HLE, is presented in detail, and major issues in the process of calculating HLE, such as selection of the population group and age group, estimation of death probability, calculation of life years, and incorporation of health weights, are reviewed. This study will help researchers to select an appropriate HLE type and evaluate the validity of HLE research results, and it is expected to contribute to the vitalization of HLE research.
Objectives : The aims of this study were to identify life satisfaction of elderly living alone based on their health status and suggest measures that improve their physical, mental and oral health, which could be used in future welfare policies on the elderly. Methods : The study subjects were 307 senior citizens who lived alone and used senior citizen centers in Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do. Results : Life satisfaction tended to be high when the subjects had a low number of chronic diseases, no activity limitations and stress, no suicidal feelings, no tooth mobility and chewing difficulty and denture use. Conclusions : To improve life satisfaction, elderly living alone need to make effort to maintain their health however, policy programs that improve the physical, mental and oral health of the elderly need to be promoted.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of physical fitness and aging anxiety on life satisfaction among the elderly. Methods: The participants were 119 elderly. Data collection was conducted from July 1 to 10, 2018. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis with SPSS software. Results: The mean life satisfaction score was 4.10. Life satisfaction differed significantly according to several general characteristics: education level (p=.014), income (p<.001), living with partner (p=.041), perceived health status (p<.001), and number of chronic diseases (p<.001). Statistically significant positive relationships were observed between life satisfaction with muscle strength (r=.20) and, flexibility (r=.21), and a negative relationship was observed with aging anxiety (r=-.66). A total of 60.0% of life satisfaction was explained by income, perceived health status, muscle strength, flexibility, and aging anxiety. Conclusion: These results can be used to develop life sports programs to improve physical, social, and emotional health promotion with consideration for support to alleviate economic burden. Effect of life sports are evident as a way for healthy and energetic elderly. It should not be a simple exercise program but an integrated plan for improving physical, mental, and social health of the elderly.
Purpose: This study focused on the health conditions and satisfaction in day-to-day life of elders using welfare facilities where there is no charge, and thus provides basic data for development of quality services required for health enhancement and a variety of demands from these elders. Method: The participants in the study were 140 elders selected at random from facilities for elders in Taegu. The tools for the study were the Korean Health Status Measure for the Elderly (Shin, H. C., 2002), and Yoon's "Criteria of Older Adults Life Satisfaction"(1982). Results: Differences in life satisfaction were found according to general characteristics of the elders, and that a lack of caretaker professionalism and relationships with other elders, but not the program were scored lower. In the correlation between health status and life satisfaction, it was found that emotional, social function and physical pain showed correlations with life satisfaction. Conclusion: It is necessary for the enhancement of health status of these elders and improvement in life satisfaction that a variety of nursing interventions be implemented.
