  • This study is a quasi-experimental study to find out the effect of school library-assisted instruction on middle school students' self-directed learning ability in Home Economics Education. For this purpose, the following research questions were established. 14 hours of school library-assisted instruction and traditional lecture were carried out to 164 9th grade female students(82 of experimental group, 82 of comparison group) of a girls' middle school in Jinju, Gyeongnam. To verify the instructional effect, a pre-test and a post-test for self-directed learning ability were carried out. SPSS 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. For statistical analysis, reliability analysis, frequency analysis, x2-test, t-test, repeated measures-ANOVA, and bivariate analysis were used. The results of this research were as follows: First, there was a statistically significant difference between experimental group and comparison group in the self-directed learning ability in all the subordinate items. Second, the change of self-directed learning ability by grade within the experimental group showed no interactional effect in all the sub-items except problem solving ability. Problem solving ability showed a meaningful difference in the rate of grade rising in accordance with academic achievement level and a higher synergy effect was shown in the low academic achievement group. Third, the experimental group showed a higher rate of rising in the self-directed learning ability than the comparison group, and the low academic achievement group showed a higher rising rate of grade than the high academic achievement group. Based on the results of this research, we concluded that the school library-assisted instruction was effective in enhancing middle school students' self-directed learning ability especially for the low academic achievement group.

The change in student's perception about home economics subject was also compared after two types of teaching-learning process. The contents of the high school Technology Home Economics textbooks and curriculum guide book for the year of 2007 curriculum revision were analyzed. Based on these analysis 10 library assisted practical problem-based teaching-learning lesson plans on 'life and carrer planning' unit were developed. The high school students living in Gyeonggi province as an experimental group participated in library assisted practical problem-based teaching-learning. The control group of students who had same condition with the experimental group were taught by same lesson plans in class. After the experiment, the changes in attitudes toward life and career planning and in perception about Home Economics subject were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance. The more significant positive attitudes toward life and career planning were found in the experimental group of students compared with those of the control group of students. And compared with the control group of students, the experimental group of student perceived more positively about characteristics of Home Economics subject. Thus, the following conclusion was made that the library assisted practical problem-based teaching-learning could be one of the useful teaching-learning methods to improve attitude toward life and career planning and perception about Home Economics subject.

  • The purpose of this study is to redefine the competencies of teacher librarians and to derive implications for training and re-educating teacher librarians by analyzing the priorities of competencies. A questionnaire survey targeting teacher librarians based on analytic hierarchy process has been conducted. The results indicate that in terms of the upper-level areas of competencies, it was found that they prioritized teacher librarians' competencies in the following order: information specialists, teachers, administrators, and cooperative leaders. Analysis of the lower levels of competency indicates that the priorities of the required competencies are listed in the following order: collection development, management and preservation, teaching and learning, media production, information service, library cooperative instruction, library assisted instruction, content curation. Therefore, being able to provide information resources by developing a collection of books to support the educational process in school libraries was found to be a critical competency. It seems necessary to cultivate the capacity to manage online and offline collections and produce and provide various teaching media and services by utilizing school library resources. It seems to give implications for the education of teacher librarians.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the students' and teachers' perception about the roles and qualifications of teacher librarians. For this purpose, data were collected through survey from students and teachers at secondary schools and the data were analyzed by semantic network analysis. The results of the research are as follows: First, students usually perceived the role of teacher librarians as 'library management', and teachers did as 'reading education'. Second, among the roles of teacher librarians, it was confirmed that students' and teachers' perceptions of 'information literacy instruction and library instruction' were very weak. Third, while the students' perception of the role of a teacher librarian as a 'teaching collaborator' such as 'teaching and learning support' and 'library assisted instruction and collaborative instruction' was weak, teachers recognized the role of teacher librarians as 'teaching collaborators'. Fourth, students and teachers perceived high levels of 'information service', which consists of 'book recommendation and guide activities'. Finally, it was investigated that 'professionalism' plays a central role in the students' and teachers' perception about the qualities of teacher librarians. These results can be used to establish the role of teacher librarians, develop response strategies for students and teachers, and improve their awareness.

  • Collaboration between teacher librarians and parents is one of the very important elements for school library management in characteristics of learning communities and expanding its' administration. These partnerships are necessary to relieve stress and risk conditions and improve ego-resilience of students. This study analyzed cases of student guidance within the partnerships between teacher librarians and parents and then inquired into formal or informal communication channels for their partnerships through written interview with 10 teacher librarians. The results of analyses teacher librarians have appreciated the necessity of collaboration with parents, and they have experienced student guidance, career guidance, reader's advisory and balancing acts between classroom teachers and parents. It turns out that reading programs with parents are formal communication channel rather than institutional committee such as School Library Council and Parents' Library-Assisting Volunteers and Parent Association and Training in the school library are informal communication channels. The teacher librarians also provide periodic reading events and training for parents and they utilize the School Homepage and Educational Newsletters as the main ways of public relation. In order to promote students' ego-resilience through their collaboration, parents should involve in School Library Council as an essential way for formal communication. And parents' role in school library management should be expanded from offering helping hands to activities to read book, library instruction, assisting teacher librarians in the Library-Assisted Instruction and production of teaching mediums.

  • The nature of supervision is to improve the quality of school education by assisting the teaching activities of teachers and development of a learning community. The school library should be considered a classroom, and should offer library-assisted instruction and information literacy through collaboration between the teacher librarian and subject teachers. Therefore, it should be under the systematic and settled supervision of school library experts. However, analysis shows school library-related divisions have carried out administrative supports in the 16 city and provincial education offices. It is necessary to seek a new supervision system in order to develop and support the education of teacher librarians and the educational value of school libraries. This study suggests The Reading and Library Section which integrates reading in school and public libraries as an independent division in municipal and provincial offices of education.
