Library Cooperation for Reference Service (참고봉사를 위한 도서관의 상호협력 -미국의 사례를 중심으로-)

  • The recent situation on developments in an expanding field of reference and information service is reviewed through the cooperative arrangements and comprehensive planning among libraries in America. The growth of reference cooperation is examined first along with the social forces that influenced the library interdependence for service. Of the various interlibrary programs identified in relation to the cooperative reference work, interlibrary loan is viewed as the key to the use of library resources based on equal access and making use of the tools for information and research, therefore a reference principle. Several kinds of library systems specifically intended to improve the reference situation are identified and described in detail without any attempt to evaluate their performance in terms of unit size, cost, or quality of the service.

A User Study for the Collection Management of a Medical Library: Focused on the Analysis of Circulation Data of the A-Medical Library (의학도서관의 단행본 장서구성을 위한 이용자 연구: A 의학도서관 대출기록을 중심으로)

  • The aim of this study is supporting efficient development of library collection and improvement of library service for users by analyzing utilization patterns of library collection using circulation statistics of medical library users. With this purpose, circulation statistics were extracted from 90,420 cases of circulation records in A library for recent 3 years (from 2012 to 2014). Specifically, circulation data categorized according to status and subject, loan data of most popular books and use data of inter-library loan service were collected and analyzed. Subject groups of this study are undergraduate students, graduate students and incumbent hospital employees including faculty members, training members and nondoctor members. For the result, medical library users intensively lent materials of Technology (Applied Sciences), Literature and Social science areas. Especially, the demand of the materials of literature was higher than the demand of the other subject areas compared in the base of collection development.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze cooperative relationship and information needs using the interlibrary loan (ILL) service data of the academic libraries. This study interprets the ILL service data as information source that including unsolved information problems. Also, this study normalizes the ILL service data using the collaboration index. The results of this study have three aspects. First, col hs-index can be useful tool for analyzing ILL service relationship between different sizes of libraries. Second, this study find out the information needs and the collection characteristics of each library after analyzing ILL data by subjects. Third, by applying col hs-index, we could analysis more objective ILL data and found out possibility of bibliographic index.

  • As the number of smart libraries is continuously increasing, activation measures are necessary to expand user engagement and enhance service quality. This study analyzed the usage patterns of four smart libraries in A Library in Incheon, from June 2020 to December 2023. It also conducted user satisfaction surveys and question-and-answer sessions with a librarian. The number of books and loans increased, and two smart libraries in areas without public libraries showed high usage rates. Although users were satisfied with the smart libraries, they pointed out inconveniences such as the limited number of loan books and insufficient books. Consequently, it is suggested to improve user-centered service quality, continuous monitoring and evaluation, as well as active promotion.

  • The purpose of this study is put emphasis on the importance of the library statistics. e. g., more than ten related current library statistics were inaccurated each other, so whole of statistic figures is not to be trusted. This research is make an attempt to more accurate information about library situations. Especially, with special reference to basic library statistics in the [Bulletin of National & College University libraries](Vol. 1-14, 1983-96, published by Council on National College & University Libraries), take the 24 major factors to compare and evaluate with 46 national and public university libraries. Analyzing 24 factors including 5 subjects. These subjects are as follows: 1) Total numbers of staffs with faculty members and students enrollment 2) Whole library collection of monographs and serial and publishcations. 3) Annual university budgets and library material expenditures. 4) Library facilities and building square measure. 5) Library service situation with circulation, inter-library loan/borrow and monograph D/B build up.

The Plan for Activating Collection Services of Public Library in Seoul Metropolitan (서울시 공공도서관 자료서비스 활성화 방안)

  • The goal of this study is to propose the plan for activating collection services of public library in Seoul. For this goal, author analyzed and compared the core infrastructure, collection services, and their correlation of public libraries in 16 local governments and evaluated environment and the current situation of collection service of public libraries in Seoul. Based on the these results, author suggested five plans or strategies for vitalizing the collection services of public libraries. All public libraries in Seoul must maximize the visibility of the new collections, supply the culture(life-long learning) programs based on library collections, expand the breadth of the collection service through library cooperation system, strengthen interlibrary loan by establishment of the collaborative repository, and raise the awareness of the citizens about the library and collections.

  • Today's S. Korean society has become more multicultural, so many libraries in S. Korea have been working hard to serve their "new customers". In this regard, this study intends to investigate library cooperative systems for acquisition of multicutural materials in Western countries to relieve difficulties of libraries in S. Korea in acquiring multicutural materials. the study analyzed 23 national libraries, state libraries, public libraries and library systems in North America, Australia and Northern European Countries. The research found categorization schemes. First, library cooperative systems are divided into two groups according to cooperative methods: cooperative acquisition and bulk loan method. Second, the systems are categorized according to the territorial scope of the service: country, state or province, borough or city and inter-library. The study also analyzed and synthesized the characteristics of these systems. It finally provides recommendations to apply the methods used by the library cooperative systems in Western countries to Korean's situation.

  • This study purposed to discover whether or not academic libraries reflect these changing roles. We selected K University as the research target and surveyed user satisfaction of materials, staff services, facilities, electronic devices, media, and so on. The research findings are as follows: 1) the frequency of library visits of University K was on the high side, 2) the primary purpose of using the academic library was associated with learning or reading, therefore, the most used library spaces were related to that, 3) the most used library materials were 'general books', the most unused were 'reference books', 4) the most preferred way to obtain needed materials when failing to find wanted materials was 'Contact librarian'. A similar phenomenon occurred in terms of facility use, 5) university K's users were usually satisfied with the loan policy, 6) the rate of users who don't know whether there is user education was very high, the rate of users who have no experience with user education was extremely low. These research findings can be referenced by library management to improve libraries' service quality and take advantage of complex spatial configurations.

A Study on the Research Support Service of College Libraries (대학도서관의 연구지원서비스에 관한 연구)

  • This research defines research support service, and compares the support service provided by college libraries in Korea and overseas. The findings showed that the frequency of college library service in Korean schools were low. Korean college libraries' services were mostly limited to the services of a normal library such as bibliographic education, full text service, and interlibrary loan service. To put it differently, Korean college libraries lacked information services on research ethics. Research spot services per research stage were mostly restricted to the data collection stage, and deficient elsewhere. On the other hand, college libraries in the U.S. were providing a platform for scholarly communication between researcher and scholars via websites.

A Study on the Current Issues and Improvements for Document Delivery Services based on the Information Service Networks: Focus on Copyright Issues (국내 정보서비스 협력체를 통한 원문복사서비스 현황과 개선 방안 연구: 저작권 문제를 중심으로)

  • This study analyzes the copyright problems of document delivery services based on interlibrary loan which are operated by KERIS and KISTI according to the agreements with KORRA. As a result of the study, we found that there are limitations of the libraries and copyright works to implement the document delivery services. Also, the electronic document delivery is the only between librarians and there is no provisions in the agreements for individual users who are not affiliated to libraries. This study suggests introduction of the ground provision for the interlibrary loan in the Copyright Act of Korea and development of authoritative guideline for details of document delivery services. Also, the study suggests that end users to request documents could be print out it but the library have to install systems to avoid copyright infringement. Finally, the study proposes the copyright fee based model for the document delivery services for individual users.
