Knowledge Sharing Among School Library Personnel in Nigeria: How Do Digital and Media Literacies Interfere?

  • The study investigated the contributions of digital and media literacies to knowledge sharing among school library personnel in Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for the study while a questionnaire was used to collect data from the 190 respondents that constitute the sample size for the study. Findings from the study revealed a high level of digital and media literacy skills possessed by the school library personnel surveyed. Producing information, evaluating digital information, and finding digital were major media and digital information literacy skills that significantly contributed to knowledge sharing among the school library personnel. The study recommended that adequate attention should be given to the development of digital and media literacies of school library personnel in Nigeria to ensure effective and efficient knowledge sharing.

Organisational Politics on Job Impetus Among Library Personnel in Selected Public Universities in South-West Nigeria

  • Nowadays, the growth rate of organisational politics in the library system is a cause of concern for library and information professionals. This has negatively impacted service delivery, most especially in public uni- versity libraries. This study examined the effect of organisational politics on job impetus among library personnel in selected public universities in South-west Nigeria. Three federal and three state universities were purposively selected such that one university was selected in each of the six states in South-west Nigeria. Total enumeration was used for all 187 library personnel in the six universities investigated. Using a descriptive survey of correlational type, a structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from respondents through survey monkey. Of 187 copies administered, 143, representing 76.5%, were retrieved and used for analysis. The results revealed a high level of organisational politics with low impetus. A strong inverse relationship was established between organisational politics and job impetus among library personnel in selected public universities in South-west Nigeria. Based on these, recommendations were made that Library personnel be encouraged to focus on their job specifications and limit organisational politics adhering to rules and regulations in the library and code of conduct for library staff.

Let Us Make: Interrogating Personnel's Perception towards Makerspace in a Nigerian University Library

  • Makerspace offers an innovative way for university libraries to render services and achieve its core objectives. However, there is low level of adoption in Nigerian university libraries, hence the need to investigate the personnel's perception towards makerspace as an innovative learning platform. To achieve this, the descriptive research design was used to elicit data with the aid of a structured questionnaire, from the 96 library personnel in John Harris Library, University of Benin. Of the 96 copies of questionnaire distributed, 68 copies were returned and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the library personnel were familiar with makerspace even though they still require more information about it. Also, that makerspace gives students the opportunity to acquire ew skill and enhances collaboration among learners. Moreover, the study revealed that budget constraints, high cost and maintenance of equipments, erratic power supply and lack of staff training are some of the perceived challenges to makerspace implementation. Consequently, the study revealed that university libraries should strategize on how to increase allocation of funds, organize makerspace webinar for personnel, ensure stable electricity supply and create a dedicated space for makerspace in the library. In conclusion, makerspace will provide students with the technological exposure and creative abilities required for the future, and as such effective planning should be made for its deployment and sustainability in Nigerian university libraries.

Organizational Culture And Emotional Intelligence As Predictors Of Job Performance Among Library Personnel In Academic Libraries In Edo State, Nigeria

  • This study was designed to investigate organizational culture and emotional intelligence as predictors of job performance among library personnel in Edo state, Nigeria. The survey research design was employed for the study with a population size of 181 library personnel in the 15 academic libraries under study, and due to the manageable population size, total enumeration was adopted as the sampling technique. The questionnaire was used to elicit data from the respondents. Of the 181 copies of the questionnaire administered, 163 copies were retrieved and found valid for analysis constituting a 90% response rate. Four research questions and four null hypotheses (tested at 0.05 level of significance) were formulated to guide the study. The tool used to analyze the research question was descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (correlation and multiple regression) for testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that there is a high level of job performance, good organizational culture, and high level of emotional intelligence among the personnel. Organizational culture and emotional intelligence jointly and significantly predict job performance of personnel. There is significant positive correlation between organizational culture and job performance. The linear combination of emotional intelligence and organizational culture predict job performance of library personnel in the academic libraries under study. The research concludes that there is a need for high job performance in libraries which is predicted by the organizational culture of the library and the level of emotional intelligence of the library personnel.

Influence of Age, Job Status, ICT Literacy Skills and ICT Use on Task Performance of Library Personnel in Public Universities

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the influence of demographic factors (age and job status), level of ICT skills possessed by respondents and ICT use on task performances of library personnel. The study employed correlation design. Thirteen public universities were purposely selected while total enumeration was adopted to study 248 library personnel made up of librarians and library officers in public university libraries in South-west, Nigeria. Data was collected by questionnaire. The study established significant positive correlation between age, job status, ICT skills and task performance. Also, Anova test found significant joint influence of age, job status, ICT skills and ICT use on task performances of respondents. The study further indicated that age, job status, ICT skills possessed by respondents and ICT use had relative significant influence on task performances of respondents. It is therefore recommended that, library personnel must leverage their demographics positively to bring about positive disposition to their jobs while all categories of staff must ensure they possessed the requisite ICT skills that will ginger ICT use for effective task performance.

미국 학교도서관 전문직 자격제도와 배치기준 (A Study on Certification Requirements and Personnel Standards for the School Library Media Specialist in the United States)

  • 본 연구는 미국 학교도서관 전문직(School Library Media Specialist : SLMS) 자격제도의 구성과 발전, 자격요건, 명칭, 교육 프로그램, 배치규정 등을 분석하였다. 미국의 SLMS의 자격요건은 주에 따라 다르지만 가장 중요한 요건은 교사자격과 문헌정보학 석사학위이다. 자격명칭 역시 주에 따라 다양하지만 School Library Media Specialist, Library Media Specialist가 가장 일반적이다. 자격제도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 주 교육청, 준비교육기관(대학), 전문직 단체가 있으며, 전국 교사교육 인가위원회인 NCATE가 ALA와 함께 교육프로그램 인가에 깊이 관여하고 있다. SLMS의 배치는 주 교육청 또는 지역 교육기관 인가단체에서 규정하는데 2002년 현재 19개 주가 규정을 갖고 있으며 늘어나는 추세이다. 6개의 지역 인가단체 중 3개 단체는 아주 명확한 규정을 확립하고 있다. 분야별 수석교사 평가제도인 NBPTS와 최근 학교도서관 및 사서교사의 위상을 위협하는 '65% 해법‘에 관해서도 검토하였다.

  • 이 연구는 2003년부터 2008년까지 추진된 대구광역시 학교도서관 활성화사업의 성과를 평가한 것이다. 연구방법으로는 통계분석과 설문조사를 사용하였다. 본 논문은 두 가지 연구 내용을 포함하고 있다. 하나는 통계 데이터를 사용하여 학교도서관의 운영 및 활동의 주요 요소인 예산, 시설, 장서, 인력, 그리고 대출을 연도별로 분석한 것이다. 다른 하나는 활성화 사업의 효과와 만족도, 학교도서관의 기능에 대한 인식, 전담 인력의 자격, 향후 학교도서관 발전의 이니셔티브와 교육청의 정책과제 등에 관하여 학교장, 교과교사, 그리고 사서교사 및 도서관 담당교사를 대상으로 설문조사하여 분석한 것이다.

학교도서관 운영 인력이 학생들의 독서행태에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of School Library Personnel on Students' Reading Behaviors in Korea)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 학교도서관 운영 인력이 학생들의 독서행태에 어떠한 영향을 미치고 있는지를 확인하고, 학생들의 독서행태에 대한 학교간의 차이를 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 전국 154개교의 초, 중, 고등학생 5,349명을 대상으로 독서환경, 학교도서관, DLS와 관련된 내용의 설문을 실시하였다. 설문 분석결과, 사서가 근무하고 있는 학교보다 사서교사가 근무하고 있는 학교의 학생들이 독서하는 시간이 더 많았고, 다양한 독서 프로그램에 참여하고 있으며, 읽을 책을 선정할 때 사서교사의 도움을 더 많이 받는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 책을 더 많이 대출하였고, DLS를 이용한 경험이 많았으며 DLS에 대한 만족도도 높은 것으로 나타났다. 학교간 차이는 '사서선생님의 수업', '대출권수', '책 선정시 사서선생님의 도움', '하루 평균 독서시간', '가정 보유 책 수', '학교도서관에서 책읽기' 순으로 나타났다. 따라서 학교간의 교육환경에 대한 불평등이 발생하지 않도록 학교도서관 운영 인력을 배치하고 이들의 전문성을 제고할 필요가 있다.

도서관상호협력기구의 도서관상호 협력활동에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Interlibrary Cooperations of Library Cooperatives)

  • In this study all kinds of Library Associations in Korea counted as Library Coperatives are surveyed under the categories of their collaborative activities as well historical developments. The results of this study are as follow : 1) The library cooperatives which have more working personnel are carrying out interlibrary cooperations more effectively, than those which have fewer working personnel. 2) The library cooperatives operating with established and realizable regulations or rules are more progressive in interlibrary cooperations than those operating with traditional practices or customary rules. 3) The library cooperatives with executing committee appear to be more progressive in interlibrary cooperations than those without it. 4) Both updating frequency of union catalog or union list and publishing intervals of supplementary editions are proved to be an important factor affecting the effectiveness of interlibrary cooperations. 5) Three of library cooperatives are employing the systems for payment of information provisions in interlibrary cooperations but the other library cooperatives are employing no payment systems, or not following such systems. By the results, six kinds of suggestions to improve the activities of korean library cooperatives have been expressed.

한국 사서직제 개선방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Improving Personnel System of Librarianship in Korea)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 국내 사서직제의 개선방안을 제안하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 5가지의 대안(현행 직제를 유지하되 직급을 상향 조정하는 방안, 사서직렬을 행정직군에서 분리하여 단독직군으로 전환하는 방안, 사서직과 관련 직종을 묶어 독립직군으로 신설하는 방안, 사서직을 학예직군 아래의 연구직렬로 이속시키는 방안, 그리고 복수 직군화하는 방안)을 상정하여 각각의 논거, 장점과 단점, 실현가능성 등을 정밀 분석하였다. 그 결과, 제3안(사서직, 학예직, 기록관리직을 통합한 가칭 '기록문화직군 또는 기록정보직군'의 신설)을 한국 사서직제의 가장 바람직한 대안으로 제안하였다.
