Korea in acquiring multicutural materials. the study analyzed 23 national libraries, state libraries, public libraries and library systems in North America, Australia and Northern European Countries. The research found categorization schemes. First, library cooperative systems are divided into two groups according to cooperative methods: cooperative acquisition and bulk loan method. Second, the systems are categorized according to the territorial scope of the service: country, state or province, borough or city and inter-library. The study also analyzed and synthesized the characteristics of these systems. It finally provides recommendations to apply the methods used by the library cooperative systems in Western countries to Korean's situation.

  • Today, the importance of library services for children is well acknowledged by many. The children's rooms of the public library in addition to the children's library must be the place where the community's young ones grow up and learn to give back to their society. Also, the libraries are a life-long source of education. However, not all of the public libraries in our country have librarians specialized in children and young adults. The lack of specialized librarians prevents the public libraries from keeping up with the rapid change of society, which in turn prevents the libraries from meeting children's needs for information, culture, and recreation. The purpose of this research has two goals in mind. The first objective is to find out how to effectively build cooperative networks that will help the children's librarians of both public and children's libraries to better serve the children. The second objective is to solve any problems the librarians may encounter while serving the children by studying the formal and informal contents of the cooperative networks, and identifying which areas are in need of these cooperative networks.

  • The Library of Congress' proposal to license LC MARC database and the following debate over the proposal shows that the issue on ownership of bibliographic databases, which surfaced as a topic of concern in the international library community with the OCLC's a n.0, pplication for copyright of its databases in 1982, is not fading or dead into the 1990s. In particular, the way that technological developments are outpacing the ability of the relevant organizations and legal systems to make necessary adjustments is giving the library profession a warning that cooperative efforts for further development of the international library systems, such as the UBC program, might be seriously impeded without a swift and amicable agreement on the controversial 'database ownership' issue. Here, the purpose of this paper lies in discussing the 'database ownership' issue from a macro and long-term perspective, with emphasis on its potential impacts on, and implications for, international information flows. To the end, the specific questions covered in this paper include : 1) what are the major causes of the database ownership controversy? 2) what are the potential impacts of the database ownership issue on the library profession's cooperative efforts toward free bibliographic information flows at the international level? And finally, 3) what are the implications of the database ownership issue for the Korean Library Community, which is making efforts toward the establishment of a national library network in near future through linking various library automation systems.

  • The recent situation on developments in an expanding field of reference and information service is reviewed through the cooperative arrangements and comprehensive planning among libraries in America. The growth of reference cooperation is examined first along with the social forces that influenced the library interdependence for service. Of the various interlibrary programs identified in relation to the cooperative reference work, interlibrary loan is viewed as the key to the use of library resources based on equal access and making use of the tools for information and research, therefore a reference principle. Several kinds of library systems specifically intended to improve the reference situation are identified and described in detail without any attempt to evaluate their performance in terms of unit size, cost, or quality of the service.

  • This paper reviews various aspects of authouity control system and presents prerequistes for an effective authority control in our future cooperative cataloging. It can be summarized as follows. First, numerous factors affecting authority control must be analyzed and consistent procedures and policies on the authority control have to be established. Second, to make an effective bibiographic data base there must be a standard for the information processing and a systematic organization for information sharing and communicating. Third, for this objective we have to build a MARC format, establish a network for the exchange of automatic authority records among systems, standardize the transcription of multscripts, and establish a centralized automatic authority system for a consistent maintenance of authorityrecords of the union data base. Fourth, it would be one of the best way of achieving cooperative cataloging to set up such a nation-wide authority control system as the NACO in Japan.

In this context this study aims to analyze various issues of the project and to provide alternative strategies. Based on analyzing previous studies the study discusses the concept and social background of itinerant librarians. Furthermore, it explores the issues of the project, including low awareness and employment instability of itinerant librarians through the interviews with participants of the project. As a result, the study provides six alternative strategies to improve the project.
