A Study on Classification of Miscelleneous Part of Four Category Classification Scheme (자부 분류에 관한 연구)

  • Four Category Classification Scheme(四部分類法), the traditional classification, is the most proper for classifying the traditional oriental marerials than some other classifications. Therefore, Four Category Classification Scheme has been valuable until now. It is obvious that this classificion aims at a rapid and accurate reference in sorting out the materials and maximun use. This paper is intended as a sludy which helps librarians to classify traditional oriental materials. It is also intended to serve librarians to have easy access to ancient literatures which have been filed among various traditional bibliographies for those who are to research oriental materials as an analysis about Miscelleneous Part(子部). The outline of this study are as follows : (1) Examining closely origins, developing process and characteristics of classification of Miscelleneous Part of Four Category Classification Scheme. (2) Explaining the content of division and section of Miscelleneous Part (子部). (3) Coordinating relations of division and section of Miscelleneous Part as well as those of other parts of the classification scheme. (4) Clearing up the limitation of classification related to other division. (5) Attempting to give basic knowledge on practical classification as concrete examples belonging to each division and section of classification.

The Methods for the Improvement of the KDC 5th Edition of Architecture Engineering Classification System (KDC 제5판 건축공학분야 분류체계 개선 방안)

  • This study is intended to present methods improving the classification system of KDC architecture engineering fields after comparing and analyzing the academic system of architecture engineering, classification system of KDC, DDC, and LCC, and that of the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea. The results of the analysis have revealed that it is required to improve and correct the KDC 5th edition of architectural engineering including the addition of classification items that reflect the trend of academic development, proper development in the rank classification terms of architectural structure engineering, addition of detailed subjects, selection of proper classification terms, errors of classification symbols and English expression, and omission of correlative indexes in the classification items. This study has proposed improved methods to solve those problems.

Mapping of the Universe of Knowledge in Different Classification Schemes

  • Given the variety of approaches to mapping the universe of knowledge that have been presented and discussed in the literature, the purpose of this paper is to systematize their main principles and their applications in the major general modern library classification schemes. We conducted an analysis of the literature on classification and the main classification systems, namely Dewey/Universal Decimal Classification, Cutter's Expansive Classification, Subject Classification of J.D. Brown, Colon Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Bibliographic Classification, Rider's International Classification, Bibliothecal Bibliographic Klassification (BBK), and Broad System of Ordering (BSO). We conclude that the arrangement of the main classes can be done following four principles that are not mutually exclusive: ideological principle, social purpose principle, scientific order, and division by discipline. The paper provides examples and analysis of each system. We also conclude that as knowledge is ever-changing, classifications also change and present a different structure of knowledge depending upon the society and time of their design.

  • A cultural classification and a culture contents industrial classification are the basic tools for cultural policies, cultural supporting, cultural statistics, and evaluations and there is a cyclic processes among them. This study finds out the varieties and short time changes of cultural categorization in laws, statistics, indexes, evaluations, research reports. As a result, colon style new cultural classification is suggested which used networks, media, genre, and cultural comparts as principles.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the applicability of machine learning targeting titles in the classification of books in public libraries. Data analysis was performed using Python's scikit-learn library through the Jupiter notebook of the Anaconda platform. KoNLPy analyzer and Okt class were used for Hangul morpheme analysis. The units of analysis were 2,000 title fields and KDC classification class numbers (300 and 600) extracted from the KORMARC records of public libraries. As a result of analyzing the data using six machine learning models, it showed a possibility of applying machine learning to book classification. Among the models used, the neural network model has the highest accuracy of title classification. The study suggested the need for improving the accuracy of title classification, the need for research on book titles, tokenization of titles, and stop words.

A Research on Utilization of KDC Based on Literary Warrant (문헌적 근거에 기반한 한국십진분류법(KDC) 활용현황에 대한 연구)

  • General-purpose classification scheme encompasses all subject areas, While the whole classification scheme is constructed by library studies experts, structure and preparation of each specific subject area's classification should be referenced to that specific subject. In order for the whole system to be practical and useful classification scheme, not just a simple collection of each subject area's scheme, it is necessary to set the rule for properly distributing the amount of classification items, and the collections assigned to these items. The rule to set the distribution of items based on the amount of document collections is called 'literary warrant'. This study examines actual status of assignment of each classification items to information resources, as a result of application of Korean Decimal Classification, and then suggests a way to improve these practices.

A Research on Citation Order of Classification Scheme and Its' Application (분류체계 인용순 및 적용에 대한 연구)

  • For the effective classification of complex subjects, a library classification scheme should adopt multiple division principles (or facets). Each of the multiple principles adopted for the division of complex subjects is sequentially applied at each stage of division. The order of application of these multiple principles during the process of division of complex subjects is called citation order. In order for a classification scheme to be consistent and logical, the citation order of division principles applied to classify complex subjects should be concrete and consistent. Especially, in case of enumerative classification system, decisions on citation order to represent complex subjects significantly affect the structure and organization of the classification system. There are basic principles and theoretical canons of the classification theory on the citation order and its application, but they cannot be applied solidly in the process of classification system development for practical reasons. Therefore, this paper first reviews previous works on classification theories regarding citation order, then explores the conditions and circumstances for the application of citation order.

A Comparative Study on the KDC, NDC, and DDC Classification System for Civil Engineering (KDC, NDC, DDC의 토목공학 분야 분류체계 비교 연구)

  • This paper is intended to comparatively analyzed the KDC/NDC/DDC classification system for the field of civil engineering, the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea, and the science and technology research field classification system of Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. And based on the analysis, it tried to propose the ways of improving the KDC classification system for the civil engineering field. As a result of the analysis, this paper has found that the KDC 5th-edition for the civil engineering field needed some corrections. That is, the classification items that reflect the trend of academic development should be added, the classification terminology of the basic theories of civil engineering should be properly developed, segmented topics should be added, any errors in classification codes and Korean/English descriptions should be corrected, and the omission of the KDC relative index of classification items should be solved. This paper proposed the ways of improving those problems.
