Plan for Centesimal Classification (PCC) (백진분류법설계)

  • DDC, LCC, and CC can be said as the major schemes for mordern general library classification. Among these, DDC, since its publication in 1876, has been continuously studies and revised by many scholars and practitioners to publish 20th edition in 1989: LCC also has been studied and revised by the specialists in each subject, since 1904; and CC(first edition 1933) is now on the stage of 7th edition(1987). Even though studied, revised and developed by many classificationists, all these schemes maintain the general framework of the beginning, only with the partial revision and expansion to reflect the developments of the subjects. and antioipated tremendous amount of works resulted from reclassification also can be a reason that disturbs the full innovative revision of the scheme, because these are used in many libraries as a basic tools for the classification. But all these schemes mainly based on the state of the discipline at the time of their creation, the beginning of 20the century, and so in some aspect it is natural for them to have many problems. This study aims to investigate the problems in these major schemes, to find some ways to solve the problems, and to suggest the ideas for the basic design of a new modern library classification scheme. This plan is prepared to be applied to the situation of all countries equally without any revision. And in its notation, it uses two digits of Arabic numerals as centesimal, and so it is named provisionally to Plan for Centesimal Classification (PCC).

A Study on the Improvements of Food and Culture in Dewey Decimal Classification System (음식문화 분야의 DDC 분류체계 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purposes of this study are to examine how food and culture and Korean foods are reflected in the classification systems and to propose improvements of DDC to classify various subjects related to the materials of food and culture. For the study, six classification systems - DDC(Dewey Decimal Classification), UDC(Universal Decimal Classification), LCC(Library of Congress Classification), KDC(Korean Decimal Classification), NDC (Nippon Decimal Classification), China Library Classification - were analyzed in aspects of eating and drinking customs, eating etiquette, nutrition and diet, food and drink, meal and table service, beverage technology, and food technology. As a result, there were few headings about Korean food in six classification systems and it was necessary for DDC to have new headings for classifying Korean and Asian traditional foods and table services. Due to the literary warrant in classification systems, it is required to publish and disseminate various Korean food recipes and publications to add new headings or notes in future classification systems.

A Study on Expansion of Headings of Korean Decimal Classification Based Upon the Analysis of Directory Classifications of Internet Resources in Food and Culture (음식문화 분야 인터넷자원 분류체계 분석을 통한 한국십진분류법의 항목명 확장에 관한 연구)

  • Library classification system is based upon academic disciplines, However, it is difficult to classify for Internet resources due to its lack of up-to-datedness and practicality. Especially, headings of Korean Decimal Classification need to reflect practical aspects and it should be also developed for classification of web based resources. The purposes of this study are to analyze the structures of directory classifications in Internet resources and to suggest additional headings of KDC as a practical library classification as well as a classification system for internet resources. Directory classification systems of Naver, Yahoo, Kyobo Internet book store, Amazon were selected and their food and culture subjects were analyzed for this study. The headings of KDC were compared to them and new possible headings were suggested with reference of NDC and DDC in the area of food and culture. This study provided a way of developing KDC for a classification system for Internet resources as well as library materials.

A Study on Classification of Confucian Classics Part of Four Category Classification (경부 분류에 대한 소고)

  • The traditional oriental materials are very important to study on Oriental or Korean studies. Every reseacher that study on this field is familier to Four Category Classification Scheme (四部分類法) as it is based on the traditional knowledge of Orient. Then, when all materials of libraries will he computerized, it will be the first condition that will has to understand about the classification of division and section of oriental knowledge, because not only ancient literature but also many dissertation of this subject will be classified. Therefore, Four Category Classification Scheme has been valuable until now. This paper is intended to help librarians to classify the traditional oriental materials or the dissertation concerned with that, to serve researched user that literatures which have been filed among various traditional bibliographies. The outline of this study are as follows: :1 Examining closely origins, developing process and characteristics of classification of Confacian Classics Part (經部) of Four Category Classification Scheme. (2) Explaning the content of division and section of Confucian Classics Part (經部). (3) Coordinating relation of division and section of Confucian Classics Part as well as those of other parts of the classification scheme. (4) Clearing up the limitation of classification related to other division. (5) Attempting to give basic knowledge on practical classification as concrete examples beloging to each division and section of classification.

  • Four Category Classification Scheme(四部分類法), the traditional classification, is the most proper for classifying the traditional oriental marerials than some other classifications. Therefore, Four Category Classification Scheme has been valuable until now. It is obvious that this classificion aims at a rapid and accurate reference in sorting out the materials and maximun use. This paper is intended as a sludy which helps librarians to classify traditional oriental materials. It is also intended to serve librarians to have easy access to ancient literatures which have been filed among various traditional bibliographies for those who are to research oriental materials as an analysis about Miscelleneous Part(子部). The outline of this study are as follows : (1) Examining closely origins, developing process and characteristics of classification of Miscelleneous Part of Four Category Classification Scheme. (2) Explaining the content of division and section of Miscelleneous Part (子部). (3) Coordinating relations of division and section of Miscelleneous Part as well as those of other parts of the classification scheme. (4) Clearing up the limitation of classification related to other division. (5) Attempting to give basic knowledge on practical classification as concrete examples belonging to each division and section of classification.

A Study on Library Use Competency of High School Students (고등학교 학생들의 도서관 이용능력에 관한 연구)

  • This has been designed for an attempt to survey a library use competency in order to provide basic information to plan more effective library use instruction for high school students. To get necessary data, a questionnaire was sent to 450 students in the 7 sample high schools in Seoul, and $80\%$ of them responded. The followings are the analysed results. 1. $42\%$ of them responded that they have heard about the decimal classification and $15\%$ of all the students have ever used decimal classification to search for the materials. 2. $3.6\%$ responded that they can understand the decimal classification and $66\%$ of all the students want to know about decimal classification. 3. $94\%$ responded that they have heard about the catalog cards and $41\%$ of all the students used catalog cards to search for the materials. 4. $29\%$ responded that they can understand the catalog cards and $68\%$ of all the students want to know about the catalog cards. 5. $61\%$ responded that they can use reference books. 6. $55.6\%$ responded that they know about the parts of a book. 7. $11\%$ responded that they can footnote. Reviewing the results of this study, library use competency of high school students can be said to be below level. And more effective approach is expected.

A Study on Genre Classification for Fictions in School Libraries (학교도서관을 위한 소설장서의 장르 분류 방안에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to find a genre classification by reflecting the needs of users since a subject that makes up the highest proportion of books in the school library is fictions in literature and KDC cannot accept user's need to access fiction in school libraries. This study suggested the genre classification for fictions in school libraries through surveying classification of fictions in domestic and foreign libraries, and comparing between classification systems of online/offline bookstores, KDC and DDC. For developing the genre classification system, it is to collect genre terms for fictions, to extract 14 genre headings among them, and to assign the acronym of English genre terms as classification notation. For applying the newly developed genre classification, KDC number of one middle school library was converted as the 3 methods such as combination of KDC, genre term before 800 and only genre terms. This study could contribute to suggest the genre classification of fiction to reflect user needs and to overcome the limitation of hierachical classification in KDC.

  • Archives and Records Management Studies is being developed its own independent domains. However, the existing library classification scheme such as the KDC don't properly reflect the characteristics of Archives and Records Management Studies. This classification scheme has the irrational part of the arrangement of the subject items and should be required to rearrange subdivision of the subject areas. In this study, According to the characteristics of Archives and Records Management Studies, It is set up 8 subject areas, Records Management (General), the law and polices of records management, the collection and appraisal of the records, the documentary organization, recording information services, preservation of the records, archives management, archives and records center, etc. After analyzing the major contemporary library classification system such as KDC, DDC, NDC, UDC, LCC, then It is suggested that improvement measures through analyzing classification status and keywords of the Archives and Records Management data contained in Korean National Bibliography. In Archives and records management studies, The contents of the eight subject areas related to the field are changed to allow integration with KDC 028.

A Study on Applicability of Machine Learning for Book Classification of Public Libraries: Focusing on Social Science and Arts (공공도서관 도서 분류를 위한 머신러닝 적용 가능성 연구 - 사회과학과 예술분야를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the applicability of machine learning targeting titles in the classification of books in public libraries. Data analysis was performed using Python's scikit-learn library through the Jupiter notebook of the Anaconda platform. KoNLPy analyzer and Okt class were used for Hangul morpheme analysis. The units of analysis were 2,000 title fields and KDC classification class numbers (300 and 600) extracted from the KORMARC records of public libraries. As a result of analyzing the data using six machine learning models, it showed a possibility of applying machine learning to book classification. Among the models used, the neural network model has the highest accuracy of title classification. The study suggested the need for improving the accuracy of title classification, the need for research on book titles, tokenization of titles, and stop words.

A STUDY OF INFERENCE IN CLASSIFIED CATALOGUE (분류목록의 추리성에 관한 연구)

  • The factors which can help the library users trace the specific subject that she or he needs are most important, when they are not sure of what they need exactly in front of a classified catalogue. This study is about what the factors are and how the factors affect the inference of users' reasoning structure. Since the classified catalogues are reflected by the classification structure, naturally the logic in the classification system becomes the focus of the study. This study concludes the classification system which enables the library users to use their reasoning capabilities, viz. the classification system which can help the users trace the specific subject even as they are not sure of the exact subject they need has following factors in the system. 1. It should have the validity based on the facts in the components of the classification system. 2. It should be logically arranged when the components of the classification system are placed in due sequence. 3. The notation of the system should be based on mnemonics. The reason is that the indispensable factors in the formation of inference of human reasoning structure are: 1. the premises which are based on the facts and 2. the logical relationship between the premises and conclusions which are induced from the premises.
