  • All-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries are important in the development of next-generation energy storage devices with high energy density. However, thin-film batteries have many challenges in their manufacturing procedure. This is because there are many factors, such as substrate selection, to consider when producing the thin film multilayer structure. In this study, we compare the fabrication and performance of all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion batteries with a $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ cathode/LiPON solid electrolyte/$Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode structure using stainless steel and Si substrates with different surface roughness. We demonstrate that the smoother the surface of the substrate, the thinner the thickness of the all-solid-state thin-film lithium-ion battery that can be made, and as a result, the corresponding electrochemical characteristics can be improved.

  • This paper addresses Electrical Power Subsystem(EPS) design and verification of HAUSAT-2 small satellite through energy balance analysis(EBA) depending on individual operation modes. GaAs solar cells are used for satellite power generation and digital peak power tracking is implemented for EPS architecture. One battery pack is consisted of 4 Li-Ion cells. Battery charge is accomplished by peak power tracker and battery charge regulator. Power conditioning assembly uses three DC-DC converters, and power distribution assembly which consists of commercial IC and MOSFET switch distributes power to subsystems and payloads. The altitude of 650km and sun-synchronous LEO with various local time ascending node(LTAN) are considered in EBA.

  • This paper presents a method to improve Li-ion battery charging speed for portable electronic devices maintaining stable operating temperature. The proposed method uses multiple chargers which consist of a master module and slave modules designed with single wire communication signal for parallel current path in order to simplify the additional hardware needs. A single wire communication signal control between a master module and slave modules makes the number of pins of parts lowered and the required area small, furthermore leading to lower cost. Therefore the proposed charging method can be practically used for implementing battery charging modules requiring high speed Li-ion battery charging.

  • In order to improve the electrochemical performances of Li-ion batteries when spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ is employed as a cathode active material, binary conductive agents were prepared using two different particle-sized carbons like Super P Black and $Vulcan^{(R)}$ XC-72R. The electrochemical performances of the $LiMn_2O_4$ cell system using binary conductive agents were evaluated in terms of specific charge and discharge capacities and cycle life. The cell with binary conductive agent in the 3:7 weight ratios of Super P Black and $Vulcan^{(R)}$ XC-72R showed better electrochemical performances due to the proper combination of ionic diffusion rate and electric contact.

  • This paper proposes an LLC resonant converter based battery charger which utilizes an adaptive turn ratio scheme to achieve a wide output voltage range and high efficiency. The high frequency transformer of the LLC converter of the proposed strategy has an adaptively changed turn ratio through the auxiliary control circuit. As a result, an optimized converter design with high magnetizing inductance is possible, while minimizing conduction and turn-off losses and providing a regulated voltage gain to properly charge the lithium ion battery. For a step-by-step explanation, operational principle and optimal design considerations of the proposed converter are illustrated in detail. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified through various experimental results and efficiency analysis based on prototype 300W Li-ion battery charger and battery pack.

  • In this review article, we are going to explain the recent development of lithium secondary batteries for a cellular phone. There are three kinds of rechargeable batteries for cellular phones such as nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, and lithium ion or lithium ion polymer. The lithium secondary battery is one of the most excellent battery in the point of view of energy density. It means very small and light one among same capacity batteries is the lithium secondary battery. The market volume of lithium secondary batteries increases steeply about 15% annually. The trend of R&D is focused on novel cathode materials including $LiFePO_4$, novel anode materials such as lithium titanate, silicon, and tin, elecrolytes, and safety insurance.

  • Through the crystal alignment research based on the magnetic properties of LiNixMnyCo1-(x+y)O2 such as magnetic susceptibility and related anisotropy, a crystal aligned LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 electrode is obtained, in which the (00l) plane is frequently oriented perpendicular to the surface of a current collector. The crystal aligned LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 electrode steadily exhibits low electrode polarization properties during the charge/discharge process in a lithium-ion battery, thus affording an improved capacity compared to a pristine LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 electrode. The aligned LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 electrode may have an appropriate structural nature for fast lithium-ion transport due to the oriented (00l) plane, and thus it contributes to enhancing the battery performance. This enhancement is analyzed in terms of various electrochemical theories and experiment results; thus, it is verified to occur because of the considerably fast lithium-ion transport in the aligned LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 electrode.

  • LiMn2O4 thin fiolm cathodes for Li-ion secondary battery were fabricated by r.f. magnetron sputtering technique. As-deposited films were amorphous. A spinel structure could not be obtained LiMn2O4 films by in-situ thermal annealing. After post thermal annealing over $700^{\circ}C$ in oxygen atmosphere, LiMn2O4 films prepared above 100 W r.f. power could be crystallized into a spinel structure. The electrochemical property of the LiMn2O4 film cathodes was tested in a Li/1 M LiClO4 in PC/LiMn2O4 cell. From cyclic voltammetry at scan rate of 2mV/sec of 2.5~4.5V, LiMn2O4 electrode prepared by post annealing at 75$0^{\circ}C$ showed good initial capacity. LiMn2O4 electrode prepared by post annealing at 80$0^{\circ}C$ showed the best crycling performance.

  • In this paper, an advanced charging strategy for improving the charging performance of the Li-ion polymer battery is proposed, which is based on the battery characteristic. Simulation results show that the proposed charging current pattern can improve the charging speed of battery in comparison with the standard CC-CV (constant current - constant voltage) charging strategy and the pulse-charging strategy.
