  • Experiments in methane-air low strain rate counterflow diffusion flames diluted with nitrogen have been conducted to study the behavior of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiative heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. Critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined with velocity ratio and global strain rate. Onset conditions of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes are also provided with global strain rate and added nitrogen mole fraction to fuel stream (fuel Lewis number). It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this affects flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Edge flame oscillations in low strain rate flames are experimentally described well and are categorized into three: a growing oscillation mode, a decaying oscillation mode, and a harmonic oscillation mode. The regime of flame oscillation is also provided at low strain rate flames. Important contribution of lateral heat loss even to edge flame oscillation is clarified.

  • Propagation rates ($U_{edge}$) of various premixed, twin edge-flames were measured as a function of global strain rate ($\sigma$), mixture strength, and Lewis number (Le). Using a counterflow slot-jet burner with electrical heaters at each end, both advancing (positive $U_{edge}$) and retreating (negative $U_{edge}$) edge-flames can be studied as they propagate along the long dimension of the burner. Experimental results are presented for premixed methane/air twin flames in terms of the effects of $\sigma$ on $U_{edge}$. Both low-$\sigma$ and high-$\sigma$ extinction limits were discovered for all mixtures tested. As a result, the domain of edge-flame stability was obtained in terms of heat loss factor and normalized flame thickness, and comparison with the numerical result of other researchers was also made. For low ($CH_4/O_2/CO_2$) and high ($C_{3}H_{8}$/air) Lewis number cases, propagation rates clearly show a strong dependence on Le.

  • In this paper, we describe the behavior of two self-excitations in laminar attached free-jet flames under the influence of DC electric fields, one of buoyancy-driven and the other of diffusion-thermal instability, established from the horizontal and vertical injection. In the horizontal injection with removed buoyancy effect, oscillating flames with the frequency of 1.3 - 7.4 Hz were observed in a certain condition with Lewis number more than unity. On the other hand, it was appeared Lewis number induced self-excitation as well as buoyancy-driven self-excitation in the vertical upward injection with DC electric fields. This behavior had frequency range of 1.6 - 9.4 Hz and was exhibited to attribute the buoyancy effect. Finally, a well-defined division about two self-excitations having similar frequency range is briefly discussed.

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation in which flame length is less than the burner diameter and thus lateral conductive heat loss in addition to radiative loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this sheets flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Lateral heat loss causes flame oscillation even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a harmonic- and a decaying-oscillation mode. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are examined with global strain rate and $CO_2$ mole fraction in fuel stream. A flame stability map based on the flame oscillation modes is also provided at low strain rate flames.

  • A theoretical analysis on the heat and mass transfer in an evaporative cooler is presented in this work. The evaporative cooler is modeled as a channel filled with porous media the interstitial surface of which is covered by thin water film. Assuming that the Lewis number is unity and the water vapor saturation curve is linear, exact solutions to the energy and vapor concentration equations are obtained. Based on the exact solutions, the characteristics of the heat and mass transfer in the evaporative cooler are investigated. The comparison of the cooling performance between the evaporative cooler and the usual sensible heat exchanger is also carried out. Obviously, the evaporative heat exchanger shows better cooling performance than the sensible heat exchanger. This is due to the latent heat of water vaporization, which results in apparent increases both in the interstitial heat transfer coefficient and the specific heat of the air stream in the evaporative cooler.

  • Background : Immunotherapy is another treatment modality for various cancers. There is little information on the antitumor effects of immunotherapy on implanted lung cancer mouse models. Toxoplasma gondii is able to potently induce a nonspecific stimulation of the host immune system. Therefore, this study evaluated the antitumor and antimetastatic effect of nonspecific immune stimulation by T. gondii in a Lewis lung cancer mouse model. Methods : Female C57BL/6 mice were injected with either Lewis lung cancer cells ($1{\times}10^6$ per mouse) or 5 cysts from the T. gondii Me49 strain with various schedules. The number of survival days, the tumor size of the implanted muscle and the histopathological findings of each group were noted. In addition to these mice, the Toxoplasma antigen($50{\mu}g$ per mouse) or a lymphokine (0.5 ml per mouse) was added to boost the immunotherapy. Results : No mouse in the Toxoplasma-infected group had died, whereas the mice receiving only the cancer cells (cancer control) survived for $29.1{\pm}4.4$ days. Cancer cells were revealed from 1 week after cancer cell inceulation in the muscle and from 3 weeks in the lung of the cancer control, whereas cancer cells were found in both the preinfection control and coinfection control groups from 2 weeks and 4 weeks in the lung respectively. The in the number of survival days were $32.4{\pm}3.3$ in the mice receiving T. gondii 2 weeks prior to the cancer cells inoculation (preinfection control), $30.9{\pm}5.1$ in mice received both simultaneously (coinfection control), and $34.9{\pm}2.9$ in mice received T. gondii 2 weeks after cancer cells implantation (postinfection control). These 3 infection groups had significantly longer survival days and suppressed tumor growth than those of the cancer control. In addition to these mice, and injection with the Toxoplasma antigen alone or in combination with lymphokine resulted in a significant increase in the number of survival days. Conclusion : These findings suggest that an injection with T. gondii can induce the antitumor and antimetastatic effects in Lewis lung cancer mouse models. Moreover, these effects were increased with an injection of the Toxoplasma antigen alone or in combination with lymphokine. However, this therapy can not prevent the development of cancer.

  • Convective instability driven by surface tension is analyzed in an initially quiescent water absorbing ammonia gas with heat transfer using the linear stability analysis. The propagation theory is adapted to find the critical conditions of the onset of Marangoni convection. In this theory, the solutal penetration depth is chosen as the length scale factor. The results show that the liquid layer becomes more stable with decreasing the Schmidt number and increasing the Lewis number. It is also found that there is a critical Biot number to make the liquid layer be most unstable, and there is a linear relationship between the thor-mal Marangoni number and the solutal Marangoni number.

  • Background: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) can induce antitumor effects in vivo. This antitumor effect is associated with T cell infiltration but the effect of IL-12 on the steps of T cell migration into the tumor tissue has not been fully elucidated. This study focused on the effect of IL-12 on the tumor growth and the metastasis and on the expression of E-selectin, an adhesion molecule which is activated endothelial specific in its expression. In addition, we studied whether the expression of E-selectin is associated with the TNF-$\alpha$, a cytokine that its production is increased by IL-12 and has functions inducing a variety of adhesion molecules. Methods: Mice of C57BL/6 strain were injected with Lewis lung cancer cells followed by either IL-12, TNF-$\alpha$, or normal saline by intraperitoneal route. Twenty eight days after tumor cell inoculation, metastatic nodules of lung were enumerated and immunohistochemical staining of the subcutaneous tumors were performed with monoclonal antibodies to CD4, CD8, CD16, and E-selectin. In IL-12 treated mice, the subcutaneously implanted Lewis lung tumors were decreased in size and the metastases were also decreased in number compared to control mice. On tumor tissues, increased infiltration of CD4+, CD8+, and CD16+ cells were oberved in IL-12 treated mice compared to control mice. In control mice, E-selectin was absent on tumor vessels, but the expression of E-selectin was increased on tumor vessels of IL-12 treated mice. Administration of TNF-$\alpha$ increased not only the expression of E-selectin but also infiltrations of CD4+, CD8+, and CD16+ cells on tumor tissues. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that IL-12 inhibits tumor growth and metastases through infiltrations of inflammatory cells in mouse model of Lewis lung carcinoma and E-selectin may playa role in inflammatory cell recruitment on tumor tissue following IL-12 administration. Also, TNF-$\alpha$ may have a role as a mediator responsible for the IL-12 induced expression of E-selectin.

  • Nonlinear characteristics of cellular counterflow diffusion flame near the radiative extinction limit at large Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number are numerically investigated. Lewis number is assumed to be 0.5 and flame evolution is calculated by imposing an infinitesimal disturbance to a one-dimensional(1-D) steady state flame. The early stage of nonlinear development is very similar to that predicted in a linear stability analysis. The disturbance with the wavenumber of the fastest growing mode emerges and grows gradually. Eventual, an alternating pattern of reacting and quenching stripes is developed. The cellular flame temperature is higher than that of 1-D flame because of the gain of the total enthalpy. As the Damk$\ddot{o}$hler number is further increased, the shape of the cell becomes circular to increase the surface area per unit reacting volume. The cellular flames do not extinguish but survive even above the 1-D steady state extinction condition.

  • An empirical Lewis basicity, DN, for eight mixed methanol solvents has been measured by the solvatochromic behavior of the [Cu(tmen)(acac)]$CIO_4$. The change of DN in mixed methanol solvents is not correlated with composition of the mixtures and divided into three groups: (1) dipolar aprotic solvents contribute mainly to the solvation of solute (MeOH-DMSO, MeOH-PY, MeOH-DMF), (2) two components of mixture contribute equally to the solvation of solute (MeOH-MeCN, MeOH-dioxane, MeOH-AC) and (3) methanol contributes entirely to the solvation of solute (MeOH-DCE, MeOH-TCE). The relationship between DN and Kamlet-Taft's $B_{KT}$ for mixed methanol solvents was found to agree well. These DN values also were a useful factor to analysis of reactivity for mixed methanol solvents.
