  • Multi-code CDMA is an appropriate scheme for transmitting high rate data. However, dynamic range of the signal is large, and power amplifier with good linearity is required. Code select CDMA (CS/CDMA) is a variation of multi-code CDMA scheme that ensures constant amplitude transmission. In CS/CDMA input data selects multiple orthogonal codes, and sum of these selected codes are MPSK modulated to convert multi-level symbol into different carrier phases. CS/CDMA system employs level clipping to limit the number of levels at the output symbol to avoid hish density of signal constellation. In our previous work we showed that by encoding input data of CS/CDMA amplitude of the output symbol can be made constant. With this coding scheme, level clipping is not necessary and the output signal can be BPSK modulated for transmission. In this paper we show that the constant amplitude coded(CA-) CS/CDMA transmitter can be implemented using only logic gates, and the hardware complexity is very low. In the proposed transmitter architecture there is no apparent redundant encoder block which plays a major role in the constant amplitude coded CS/CDMA.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast adaptive power allocation method for an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system that employs an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme. The proposed scheme aims to reduce the calculation complexity of greedy adaptive power allocation (APA), which is known as the optimal algorithm for maximizing the utility argument of power. Unlike greedy APA, which starts power allocation from "0", the proposed algorithm initially allocates a certain level of power determined by the water-filling scheme. We theoretically demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has almost the same capability of maximizing the utility argument as the greedy APA while reducing the number of operations by 2M, where M is the number of AMC levels.

  • Spinal fixation systems provide surgical versatility, but the complexity of their design reduces their strength and fatigue resistance. There is no published data on the mechanical properties of such screws. Screws were assembled according to a vertebrectomy model for destructive mechanical testing. A group of two assemblies was tested in static compression. One group was applied to surface a grit blasting method and another group was applied to surface a bead blasting method. Modes of failure, yield, and ultimate strength, yield stiffness, and cycles to failure were determined for six assembles. Static compression 2% offset yield load ranges was from 327 to 419N. Fatigue loads were determined two levels, 37.5% and 50% of the average load from static compression ultimate load. An assembly of bead blasting treatment only achieved 5 million cycles at 37.5% level in compression bending.

  • As the number, complexity and interaction of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic (E/E/PE) systems increase, a growing emphasis has been placed on the concept of functional safety during product development. IEC 61508 provides guidelines and standardized procedures in the development of reliable and dependable E/E/PE systems to assure functional safety. Determining risk classes (i.e., safety integrity levels, SILs) associated to a specific E/E/PE item may be recognized as one of the most crucial activities in the product development per IEC 61508 since SILs are used to specify necessary safety requirements for achieving an acceptable residual risk. This article presents a case study on the assessment of SILs applying failure modes, effects and diagnostic analysis (FMEDA) from which failure rates may be derived for each important failure category by combining a standard FMEA with online diagnostic techniques.

  • Difficulties in the finite element modeling of human spine are evaded by using a stiffness matrix element whose properties can be characterized from experimentally measured stiffness of functional spinal units. Relative easiness is in that inter-vertebral discs, ligaments, and soft tissues connecting vertebrae do not need to be modeled as they are. The remarkable coupling effect between distinct degrees of freedom induced by the geometric complexity can be accommodated without much effort. An idealized block model with simple geometry for vertebra is employed to assess the feasibility of this method. Analyses are performed in both levels of motion segment and spinal column, and the result is compared with that from detail model. As far as the global behavior of spine is concerned, the simplification is found not to aggravate inaccuracy only if sufficient experimental data is provided and interpreted properly.

  • A low complexity, fault detecting computer architecture for utilisation in programmable logic controllers is designed. The cyclic operating mode of PLCs and a specification level, graphical programming paradigm based on the interconnection of application oriented standard software function modules are architecturally supported. Thus, by design, there is no semantic gap between the programming and machine execution levels enabling the safety licensing of application software by an extremely simple, but rigorous method, viz, diverse back translation.

  • In multimedia communication systems, efficient transmission system design should incorporate the use of matching unequal error protection (UEP), since source coders exhibit unequal bit error sensitivity. In this paper, we present UEP schemes which exploit differences in bit error protection levels in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency selective fading channels. We introduce an UEP scheme which improves the link performance with multiple transmit and receive antennas. Especially, we propose a new receiver structure based on two stage Maximum Likelihood detection (MLD) schemes which can approach the performance of a full search MLD receiver with much reduced computational complexity. In the performance analysis, we derive a generalized pairwise error probability expression for the proposed UEP schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve a significant performance gain over the conventional equal error protection (EEP) scheme.

  • Coordination in natural language is often syntactically explained by the rule schema X \longrightarrow X′ and X", where X′ and X" refer to expressions of a like syntactic type. While this schema does explain a lot of instances of coordination, it is well known that this schema also gives rise to serious structural ambiguity, leading not only to numerous unintended interpretations but also to a high degree of unnecessary computational complexity. In order to identify intended interpretations, we need to take into account a number of clues at all the levels of morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics/discourse. In this paper, we propose, with an accompanying data analysis, principles of symmetry and coherency for an effective and reasonable identification of intended interpretations from coordination-bearing sentences.

  • In this paper, we propose a new single-image dehazing method. The proposed method constructs color ellipsoids that are statistically fitted to haze pixel clusters in RGB space and then calculates the transmission values through color ellipsoid geometry. The transmission values generated by the proposed method maximize the contrast of dehazed pixels, while preventing over-saturated pixels. The values are also statistically robust because they are calculated from the averages of the haze pixel values. Furthermore, rather than apply a highly complex refinement process to reduce halo or unnatural artifacts, we embed a fuzzy segmentation process into the construction of the color ellipsoid so that the proposed method simultaneously executes the transmission calculation and the refinement process. The results of an experimental performance evaluation verify that compared to prevailing dehazing methods the proposed method performs effectively across a wide range of haze and noise levels without causing any visible artifacts. Moreover, the relatively low complexity of the proposed method will facilitate its real-time applications.

  • This paper presents a salient region detection algorithm for auto-focusing based on the characteristics of a human's visual attention. To describe the saliency at the local, regional, and global levels, this paper proposes a set of novel features including multi-scale local contrast, variance, center-surround entropy, and closeness to the center. Those features are then prioritized to produce a saliency map. The major advantage of the proposed approach is twofold; i) robustness to changes in focus and ii) low computational complexity. The experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms the existing low-level feature-based methods in the sense of both robustness and accuracy for auto-focusing.
