This study was conducted to investigate the effects of diets with varying levels of calcium on egg production, shell quality and overall calcium status in aged laying hens. A total of five hundred 70-wk-old Hy-Line Brown layers were divided five groups and fed one of the five experimental diets with 3.5%, 3.8%, 4.1%, 4.4%, or 4.7% Ca, for 10 weeks. There were no significant differences in feed intake, egg production and egg weight among groups. The cracked eggs were linearly reduced as dietary Ca levels increased to 4.7% (p<0.01). A significant linear improvement for eggshell strength and thickness were determined with increasing dietary Ca levels (p<0.01). The contents of serum Ca and phosphorus were not affected by dietary Ca levels. With increase in dietary Ca levels, the tibial breaking strength slightly increased. There were no significant differences in the tibial contents of ash, Ca and phosphorus among groups. In conclusion, eggshell quality, as measured by appearance, strength and thickness of eggshell, were influenced by dietary Ca content as expected (p<0.05). These results suggested that aged laying hens require relatively higher level of Ca than required levels from current Korean feeding standards for poultry.
To determine the effects of guar suksolgi on blood glucose and lipids in type-ll diabetic subjects, a piece of guar suksolgi(36.3g, 54Kcal) was administered to eight patients for 3 weeks every meal. No significant differences occured indietary intakes and body weight before and after the treatment. Fasting blood glucose levels were decreased from 132.38mg/dI to 114.75mg/dI after the treatment, but not statistically significant. Blood TG levels were increased from 159.13mg/dI to 175.00mg/dI after the treatment, but not statistically significant. Excluding one patient who had extremely high TG level, blood TG levels tended to be decreased from 148.00mg/dI to 121.00mg/dI. TC LDL-c, HDL-c levels were decreased after the treatment, but not statistically significant. HbAIC concentrations were decreased from 8.54mg/kI to 7.80mg/dI after the treatment, but not statistically significant. In the case of three patients who had had normal fasting blood glucose levels, blood glucose levels tended to be decreased at postprandial 30, 60 minutes, and blood insulin levels tended to be decreased at postprandial 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, although none of the levels were statistically significant. Therefore, if guar suksolgi is adinistered to type-ll diabetic subjects being more hyperglycemic than our patients, their blood glucose and lipids will be decreased significantly.
This study was designed to examine how dietary protein levels affect organ growth and protein metabolism in early and normally weaned rats. Early and normally weaned rats separated fro the dam on the 15th and 121st day postpartum, respectively. were fed diets containing three levels of protein : low(10%) , normal (20%),and high(40%) . On the 35th day, the weight and DNA, RNA and protein contents in brain , liver, and kidney were determined to ascertain organ and cellular growth. Furthermore, serum total protein , albumin , $\alpha$-amino N and creatine and urinary urea N, and creatinine were determined in order to ascertain protein metabolism and renal functions. Dietary protein levels were not observed to significantly affect total DNA content, which may represent an index of cell number in the liver, brain and kidney. Fresh weight and protein/DNA ratio, which may represent indices of cell size, significantly increased in proportion to dietary protein in the kidney. As for the early weaned rats , the liver cell size significantly decreased. Dietary protein levels and weaning periods did not affect serum total protein and albumin . However, serum urea-N significantly increased in proportion to dietary protein levels whereas serum $\alpha$-amino N was decreased by early weaning . Nitrogen retention was lower in early weaned rats fed low or high levels of protein than in normally weaned rats. The results demonstrate that low or high levels of dietary protein have less desirable effects on protein metabolism in prematurely weaned rats.

Marketing channels have been characterized as social systems by the recent channel literatures. Under this assumption, many channel behavioral theories were developed by examining hypothetical relationships among several channel variables. Among them, interrelationship of channel cooperation with other variables has been one of major concerns to channel managers. From this point of view, the objective of this paper is to examine the role of cooperation in the franchise system of garments goods. In order to achieve our goal, data was collected from garment retailers and a simple random sample of 150 dealers was drawn and tested. Major findings through the data analysis are as follows : 1. Higher levels of dependence lead to higher levels of cooperation. 2. Noncoercive sources of power tends to increase intrachannel cooperation. However, the hypothesis that higher levels of coercive sources of power will lead to lower levels of cooperation was not statistically supported. 3. Another hypothesis that higher levels of conflict will lead to lower levels of cooperation was partially supported. 4. Higher levels of cooperation lead to higher levels of cooperation. In this study, data was gathered from the retail side of the franchise channel dyad for garments goods. Therefore, future research are suggested to investigate respondents of both sides(franchiser and franchisee) of the channel dyad.
This study was to investigate interaction between dietary protein and Ca levels in Ca metabolism and renal function in osteporosis rats. Five week-old female rats were fed a low Ca diet for 4 weeks after ovariectomy operation to establish rat models of osteoporosis. The ovariectomized osteoporosis rats were divided into six groups and were fed experimental diets which contained two levels of protein, normal (20%) and high(40%) , and three levels of Ca, low (0.06%), normal (0.47%) and high(0.94%) for 4 weeks , respectively. The ovaricetmized rat model of osteoporosis showed a remarkable decrease in serum Ca concentration, fresh weight and breaking force of femur, Ca and P contents of femur, and apparent absorption and retention of Ca. The supplementations of Ca and P contents of femur, and apparent absorption and retention of Ca. The supplementations of Ca at the dietary levels of normal and high levels significantly enhanced Ca bioavailability shown in the above experimental rat models of osteoporosis, regardless of dietary protein levels ; whereas the rats which were fed the low Ca diet demonstrated rather a decrease in its bioavailability. Irrespectively of the dietary Ca levels, the rats which were fed high protein diet exhibited an increase in kidney weight, urinary Ca, volume and hydroxyproline, and glomerular filtration ratio(GFR). The results show that dietary protein and calcium levels affect the renal function and Ca metabolism independently, while the interaction between protein and calcium have not been shown.
As a long-term goal for the development of new prescriptions for hyperlipidemia, IJWRT was examined in the present study using a rat model in which the hyperlipidemia was induced. The major parameters related to lipid metabolism were investigated and the key findings are summarized below. IJWRT didn't show the cytotoxicity on Human Fibroblast Cells(hFCs). The body weight of hyperlipidemia-induced rats began to show lower body weight beginning one week after IJWRT treatment compared to non-treated control group animals. Cholesterol levels showed a significant decrease beginning three weeks after IJWRT treatment, compared to hyperlipidemia-induced control group. Total cholesterol levels in IJWRT treated animal group were significantly decreased compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group. Glucose levels in IJWRT treated animal group were significantly decreased compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group. Triglyceride levels in IJWRT treated animal group were significantly decreased compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group. SGOT levels in IJWRT treated animal group were insignificantly decreased compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group whereas there was significant change in SGPT levels. HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased in IJWRT treated animal group compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group. LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly decreased in IJWRT treated animal group compared to the hyperlipidemia-induced control group.

It has been reported that the increased uric acid level is associated with metabolic syndrome risk factors in both male and female. However, there has not been enough studies to investigate gender differences of this association in Korea. To evaluate relation between serum uric acids and metabolic syndrome markers, anthropometric and biochemical analyses data was obtained from National Health Examination 2005 and 5,523 (M=3,097; F=2,426) data was analyzed. Results by quartile of serum uric acid levels in females showed that increased serum uric acid level was associated with elevated levels of total-. LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, whereas association between serum uric acid and total cholesterol levels was not observed in male subjects. In both female and male, higher quartile of serum uric acid level were linked with lower levels of HDL-cholesterol. In regression analysis, association of serum uric acid levels with fasting glucose levels was significant in female subjects only. In conclusion, higher serum uric acid levels were associated with metabolic syndrome indices, however gender differences were existed for total cholesterol.
Personal exposure levels of $NO_{2}$ for office workers and housewives Living in A-San and neighboring prefectures were measured in two seasons with $NO_{2}$ filter badge. $NO_{2}$ concentrations in indoor and outdoor air in their offices and houses were also measured in the same periods. Personal exposure levels in winter ranged from 13 to 132 ppb and its distribution pattern was remarkably different from the other seasons (15.2-17.9 ppb). This fact suggests that use of heating apparatus affects largely $NO_{2}$ indoor air pollution in winter seasons. Actually, $NO_{2}$ exposure levels of subjects used Kerosene heater (43.6ppb) and gas heater (33.4ppb) were higher than those of subjects unused heating apparatus (18.0ppb). Personal exposure levels of $NO_{2}$ for man and woman Living in the same houses were correlated well each other. The time spent indoors for office workers and housewives were both longer than 22 hour a day. Home staying time was about 60% of total indoor staying time for office workers and 90% or more for housewives. Personal exposure levels were significantly related to indoor exposure levels at home all seasons. Furthermore, personal exposure levels could be estimated from $NO_{2}$ concentrations and staying times in various Living environment.

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression levels in stroke survivors and their spouses. Methods: This study was a convenience sample of Korean men who had experienced a stroke and their spouses. The subjects were discharged from the hospital and received physical therapy. Data such as sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression levels were collected from November 2005 to April 2006. Results: In a comparison of stroke survivors and their spouses, the survivors showed higher mean levels of sexual knowledge and marital intimacy. The levels of knowledge, frequency, satisfaction and marital intimacy were low and depression was mild in the subjects. There were significant correlations between sexual frequency, sexual satisfaction and marital intimacy. Also, subjects with lower levels of sexual satisfaction were more depressed. The spouses who possessed greater levels of sexual knowledge reported a higher frequency of sex and greater marital intimacy. In addition, spouses who reported feeling greater levels of marital intimacy experienced fewer depressive symptoms. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate a need for the development of sexual adaptation programs which could be effective in improving sexual knowledge, frequency, satisfaction, marital intimacy, and depression reported by stroke patients and their spouses. Ideally, these corrective programs should be administered before patients are discharged from the hospital.
