Levee breaches can result from flooding due to torrential rainfalls, which are linked with recent abnormal climates and the aging of river levees. Breaches have caused enormous property damage and human casualties in lowland areas. Overtopping was found to be the cause for approximately 40% of all cases of breach. In this study, the reasons and mechanisms behind levee breaches were analyzed using hydraulic model testing. The overtopping stability and time delay effect of breaches were assessed for levees made with a new environmentally friendly substance. Image analysis revealed that the total breach time of the levees made with the new substance was about 2.25 times greater than that of an earthen levee. The initial breach rate of a general earthen levee was about 1.43 times higher than that of levees covered with the new substance, and the body collapsed rapidly. The breach mechanisms of levees covered with the new substance were completely different, and it is possible to prevent rapid breaches by mitigation of the breach speed on the slope by resisting overtopping.
An influence factors for soundness evaluation of river levee include consisting embankment in case piping, permeability coefficient of ground, height of embankment, the width of crest, material characteristics of embankment and foundation ground, shape of embankment slope, an influence for penetration of rainfall or river water in case slope stability. In this study, it was operated a feasibility investigation of existing design result, stability evaluation for permeability coefficient use and permeability coefficient change of foundation ground to investigate an influence in line with permeability coefficient change for result of river levee penetration analysis. The evaluation results of influence factors, the permeability coefficient was used in design and it was evaluated influence in safety factor of piping. After the evaluation of influence factors, the permeability coefficient used in the design appears with the fact that differs in a design report about same soil.
The levee protect lifes, houses, and properties by blocking overflow of river. The revetment is forced to be covered on the slope of levee in order to prevent erosion. The stability of revetment is very important enough to directly connected to the stability of levee. In this study, the weak points of revetment on meandering channel were found by movable revetment experiment and the velocity and the water surface elevation (WSE) were measured at main points. The 3-D numerical simulations were performed under same conditions with experiment. And unclear flow characteristics by the limit of measuring instruments were analyzed through numerical simulation. Consequently, the section of large wall shear stress and the failure section are almost the same. Despite of small wall shear stress, the revetments located at right bank were carried away because of circulation zone due to secondary flow by meandering. With existing riprap design formula, the sizes of riprap determined using maximum local velocity were 1.5~4.7 times greater than them using mean velocity. As a result of this study, it is necessary to calculate the size of riprap in other ways for meandering and straight channel. At a later study, if the weighted value considered the radius of curvature and shape of hydraulic structure is applied to riprap design formula, it is expected that the size of revetment was evaluated rationally and accurately.

A probabilistic risk analysis of levee system estimates the overall level of flood risk associated with the levee system, according to a series of possible flood scenarios. It requires the uncertainty analysis of all the risk components, including hydrological, hydraulic and geotechnical parts computed by employing MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo), MCS (Monte Carlo Simulation) and FOSM (First-Order Second Moment), presents a joint probability combined each probability. The methodology was applied to a 12.5 km reach from upstream to downstream of the Gangjeong-Goryeong weir, including 6 levee reaches, in Nakdong river. Overtopping risks were estimated by computing flood stage corresponding to 100/200 year high quantile (97.5%) design flood causing levee overflow. Geotechnical risks were evaluated by considering seepage, slope stability, and rapid drawdown along the levee reach without overflow. A probability-based compound risk will contribute to rising effect of safety and economic aspects for levee design, then expect to use the index for riverside structure design in the future.

The stability of the embankment is depended upon the location of seepage line. As the seepage flow occurs in the embankment, the slope of the embankment loses its stability. Of particular interest is the stability following a rapid change of embankment level. The variation of seepage line in the embankment model according to flow velocity was investigated. In addition to this non-steady state flow in embankment by a fluctuation of water level is discussed. The experimental model was construction with slopes of 1 : 2.5 and flow velocity is turned from 60 cm/sec~90 cm/sec. Analysis of the experimental results, the seepage line is influenced by flow velocity and coefficient of permeability.

The purpose of this study is to classify the factors influenced on the damages of head works suffered from the storm flood occurred on July 22 1980 in both Musim and Bochong rivers and to find out an integral counter measures against the causes influenced on the disaster of head works in the engineering aspect of planning, design, construction and maintenance. In this survey, number of samples was taken 25 head Works, and the counter measures against the causes of their disasters summarized was as follows, 1. In the aspect of planning a. As the flood water level after the establishment of head works is more increased than the level before setting of head works owing to having more gentle slope of river bed between the head works than nature slope of river bed. Number of head works should be reduced for the appropriate annexation of them b. In the place where head works is established on the curved point of levee, the destruction of levee becomes severe by the strong deflective current. Therefore the setting of head works on the curved point should be kept off as long as possible and in case of unavoidable circumstances the construction method such as reinforced concrete wall or stone wall filed with concrete and anchored bank revetments should be considered. 2. In the aspect of design a. As scoring phenomena at up stream is serious around the weir Where the concentration of strong current is present in such a place, up stream apron having impermeability should be designed to resist and prevent scoring. b. As the length of apron and protected bed is too short to prevent scoring as down stream bed, the design length should be taken somewhat more than the calculated value, but in the case the calculated length becomes too long to be profitable, a device of water cushion should be considered. c. The structure of protected river bed should be improved to make stone mesh bags fixed to apron and to have vinyl mattress laid on river bed together with the improvement for increasing the stability of stone mesh bags and preventing the sucked sand from the river bed. d. As the shortage of cut-off length, especialy in case of the cutoffs conneting both shore sides of river makes the cause of destruction of embankment and weir body, the culculation of cut-off length should be taken enough length based on seepage length. 3. In the aspect of design and constructions a. The overturing destruction of weir by piping action was based on the jet water through cracks at the construction and expansion joints. therefore the expansion joint should be designed and constructed with the insertion of water proof plate and asphalt filling, and the construction joint, with concaved shape structure and steel reinforcement. b. As the wrong design and construction of the weep holes on apron will cause water piping and weir destruction, the design and construction of filter based on the rule of filter should be kept for weep holes. c. The wrong design and construction of bank revetment caused the severe destruction of levee and weir body resulting from scoring and impulse by strong current and formation of water route behind the revetment. Therefore bank revetment should be designod and constructed with stone wall filled with concrete and anchored, or reinforced concrete wall to prevent the formation of water flow route behind the wall and to resist against the scoring and impulse of strong stream. 4. In the aspect of maintenance When the damaged parts occurred at head works the authorities and farmers concerned should find and mend them as soon as possible with mutual cooperation, and on the other hand public citizen should be guided for good use of public property.

Newmark's sliding block analysis is the most commonly used method for predicting earthquake-induced permanent displacement of embankment slopes. Additionally, it yields the amount of slip circle sliding using the limit equilibrium theory. Thus, permanent displacement does not occur until the seismic load exceeds the yield acceleration, which induces sliding of the slip circle. The evolution of Newmark's sliding block analysis has been made by introducing the numerical seismic response analysis results since it was introduced. This study compares seismic performance evaluation results for the example enclosure dam section with the analysis methods. As a result, earthquake-induced permanent displacement using Newmark's sliding block analysis did not occur for the enclosure dam, indicating a high safety factor. However, nonlinear response history analysis gave reasonable results.

We analyzed the effect of changing water level and turbidity on plants that serve to maintain slope stability on levees. In this experiment, soil collected from upstream of Imha Dam was placed in a water tank and planted with river plants of the Salix species: Salix gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa. Plant regrowth was analyzed stage-by-stage during a recovery period. In addition, we assessed the tolerance of the plants to concentrated torrential rainfall and examined their recovery rates. The results indicate that in the case of these three Salix species, which are the most prevalent river plants in Korea, stem growth is arrested following serious damage and high turbidity. The possibility of regrowth was very low during the 20-day non-submerged recovery period. Although the number of leaves initially decreased during this period, subsequent regrowth was reasonably high: recovery in S. gracilistyla, S. koreensis, and S. glanduosa was up to 59.3%, 251.3%, and 148.4% respectively, compared with the initial condition.
