The cone calorimeter as defined by ISO 5660, ASTM 1354, and NFPA 264A is used to assess the reaction to fire of almost any material that must be evaluated in the fire science field. Typical combustion gas analyses include oxygen, CO and CO2. Oxygen consumption is used to determine rate of heat release. Analysis of combustion gases other than oxygen, CO and CO2 has been attempted using filters to remove the solid smoke particles before analysis. This method has generated unreliable results due to the adsorption of many gas components on the active carbon . particles deposited on the filters. A technique using fourier Transform Infrared (FTIB) analysis without filtration will be disclosed and a discussion will be presented of the analytical results of toxic gases produced from various flame retarded polymeric materials. Use of such data in lethal toxic potency determinations is also reviewed.

Drosophila melanogaster Meigen and Drosophila suzukii Matsumura are taxonomically close Drosophila species belonging to the family Drosophilidae and melanogaster group. D. melanogaster is thought to be evolutionarily adapted to overripe, decaying, and fermented fruits, in which large amounts of chemicals such as ethanol, acetic acid, and 2-phenylethanol are produced, whereas, D. suzukii is attracted to fresh ripening fruit. Considering the distinct habitats of the two flies, D. suzukii is hypothesized to exhibit higher susceptibility to these chemicals than D. melanogaster. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the survival rate of the flies at various concentrations of three chemicals (2-phenlyethanol, acetic acid, and ethanol) and calculated the lethal concentration (LC) values to compare the tolerance and susceptibility of D. melanogaster and D. suzukii to the chemicals. Our results revealed that D. melanogaster exhibited higher tolerance than D. suzukii to all chemicals, supporting the hypothesis of different evolutionary adaptations to distinct habitats of the two flies.
We examined physiological responses related to the survival, oxygen consumption and filtration rate of the blood cockle, Tegillaarca granosa as a result of salinity changes. The 44-day $LS_{50}$ (median lethal salinity) at $10^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 15.8 (confidence limits 13.5-18.2 psu) and 16.2 (confidence limits 14.1-18.4 psu) psu respectively, whereas the 11-day $LS_{50}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ for adult and juvenile was 16.8 psu (confidence limits 12.9-21.2 psu) and 22.4 (confidence limits 20.5-24.7 psu) psu respictively. In conditions of decreasing salinity, Oxygen consumption and filtration rates decreased or varied irregularly as salinity decreased. The results of this study could prove important in investigating causes of mass mortality and managing shellfish aquaculture farms.
HSP104 protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is known to provide thermotolerance when induced by various kinds of stresses, such as a mild heat shock, ethanol, and hypoxia. It helps cells survive at an otherwise lethal temperature. Mechanisms by which HSP104 protein works are yet to be elucidated. In order to understand a molecular basis of thermotolerance due to HSP104 protein induced by a mild heat shock, studies on respiratory pathways were carried out in the wild type as well as in the hsp104 deleted mutant. Especially the degree of 13C-acetate incorporation into glutamate-C4 was examined for both strains using 13C-13C homonuclear spin coupling measurements, since glutamate is in a rapid equilibrium with α-ketoglutarate in the TCA cycle. In addition, the temperature effects on the rate of 13C incorporation are compared with or without HSP104 protein expressed. Finally, the inhibitory effect of HSP104 on the respiration pathway was confirmed by the measurements of oxygen consumption rates for both strains.
Background: To study the radioprotective effects of flavonoids from Rosa roxburghii Tratt (FRT). Materials and Methods: The radioprotective effects of FRT were investigated by examining cell viability, 30-day survival of mice and the number of colony-forming units in spleen (CFU-S) after total-body 60Co irradiation. Results: The survival rates of irradiated cells gradually increased with increasing concentrations of FRT. The survival rate was the highest at 87% with a concentration of $30{\mu}g/mL$. Pretreatment with FRT was needed to realize its radioprotective activity in mice at the dose of 60 mg/kg. With the increasing doses of 30 mg/kg, 60 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg, the numbers of CFU-S increased, and were significantly different compared with the control group. Conclusions: Pretreatment with FRT prior to irradiation resulted in significantly higher cell survival at 24 h after 5 Gy radiation, increased 30-day survival in mice after exposure to a potentially lethal dose of 8 Gy, and resulted in a higher number of CFU-S in mice after exposure to a dose of 6 Gy. These results collectively indicate that FRT is an effective radioprotective agent.
The ppage resistance mechanism of Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris ATCC 11602-A1 was investigated. When parent and A1 were incubated at 30 and 40$^{\circ}C$, A1 grew well and multiplication of phage(MOI=1)on A1 slightly occurred at 40$^{\circ}C$ in contrast with parent. There was a great difference of proteolytic activity between parent and A1, irrespective of the temperature. As a result of ADS treatment oon culture broth, survival rate of A1 was 27% at the lethal concentration of parent and adsorption rate of phage was increased to 95~97%, which was considered to come from the exposure of phage receptor site masked by an unknown component. These results suggest that acridine orange (AO) treatment leads to the modification of cell wall, conferring resistance to high temperature and lytic phage. No change in plasmid profiles of A1 at 30 and 40$^{\circ}C$ were found, which suggests that plasmid is not relative to temperature-resistance of A1.
The sudden drop of water temperature in winter is very threatening factor that affects the productivity of farmed fish and the management in aquafarm. In this study, we investigated the effect of low temperature on the survival, oxygen consumption and stress responses of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus due to acute drop of water temperature. The survival rate of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus was 5% at 6℃, 95% at 8℃ and 100% at 10℃ on the 4th day of exposure in each experimental temperature. Low-lethal temperature for 4days of parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus (4 day-LT50) was 6.99℃ (confidence limit, 6.55-7.42℃). Oxygen consumption rate was significantly decreased with decreasing water temperature. Temperature coefficient (Q10) was found to be 4.0 between 10℃ and 8℃ and 0.39 between 8℃ and 6℃. As a result of investigating the stress response according to the drop in water temperature, the concentration of SOD (Superoxide dismutase), cortisol, glucose, total Ig, AST (Aspartate) and ALT (Alanine aminotransferase) increased with decreasing of water temperature. This study would be useful for the management of temperature about cultured fish.
This study was carried out to investigate nitrification in the main stream of the Naktong river for two times, 12-13 August and 23-26 September 1982. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The increase of nitrogen concentration was due to inflow of Geumho river, which was polluted by the municipal and industrial wastewater of Daegu city. 2. The rate constant of ammonia calculated for three reaches was high according to the stream flow and was eminently low in the reach from Goroung to Gangjung. (0.068-0.116 $day^{-1}$). This phenomena might be attributed to the sublethal or even lethal effect upon aquatic life by relatively low DO concentration and high heavy metal concentration. 3. DO consumption rate by nitrification was highest for the reach from Goroung to Daeam where was affected by Geumho river. (56.7-147.8%). This phenomena might be attributed to low DO concentration and high nitrogen concentration. Especially, the less stream flow was, the higher DO consumption was. And so, nitrification in the station where is low DO concentration, especially under the low flow condition, might cause more serious water quality management problem. Therefore, for the purpose of effective conservation of water quality in the Naktong river, it was suggested that We have more concern about the nitrogen compound, and more study on the nitrification phenomena.
The acute toxicity effect of triorganotin of trioganotin on the growth of microalgae and shellfish was investigated through flask culture. The value of 120 hr-LC$_{50}$ that is the median lethal concentration of TBTO on the shellfish (R. philipinarum) was found to be 6 $\mu$g/L. The acute toxicity effect of TBTO on T. suecica was obviously shown even at the concentration of 0.5 $\mu$g/L, and the effect diminished as the initial cell density increased. The effect also diminished less in the experiment done under aeration than in that done under non-aeration. To design a chemostat system for the test of chronic toxicity, the culture of T. suecica was executed in photobioreactor. In batch culture, the profiles of chlorophyII a and D.C.W. showed the growth of T. suecica very well, and the maximum specific growth rate was estimated to be 0.54 d$^{-1}$. with this value, as a dilution rate in contimuous culture, pH was nicely maintained between 7 and 9 when air was supplied with 3% CO$_{2}$. From all results and the natural environment of clam, a novel chemostat system was invented. Through this system, we can observe each independent toxicity effect of TBTO and plankton and combined toxicity effect as well.
This paper presents a hybrid algorithm to solve the multi-objective path planning (MOPP) problem for mobile robots in a static nuclear accident environment. The proposed algorithm mimics a real nuclear accident site by modeling the environment with a two-layer cost grid map based on geometric modeling and Monte Carlo calculations. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps. The first step optimizes a path by the hybridization of improved ant colony optimization algorithm-modified A* (IACO-A*) that minimizes path length, cumulative radiation dose and energy consumption. The second module is the high radiation dose rate avoidance strategy integrated with the IACO-A* algorithm, which will work when the mobile robots sense the lethal radiation dose rate, avoiding radioactive sources with high dose levels. Simulations have been performed under environments of different complexity to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, and the results show that IACO-A* has better path quality than ACO and IACO. In addition, a study comparing the proposed IACO-A* algorithm and recent path planning (PP) methods in three scenarios has been performed. The simulation results show that the proposed IACO-A* IACO-A* algorithm is obviously superior in terms of stability and minimization the total cost of MOPP.
