Effects of legume mixture on nitrogen fixation and transfer to grasses in spring paddy field

  • Nitrogen fixation by legumes can be valuable sources for organic farming. This study was to investigate the effect of different legume mixtures on nitrogen fixation and transfer to grasses on spring paddy field. Three different mixtures were used (rye+hairy vetch, Italian ryegrass+crimson clover, oat+pea) in a randomized complete block design with three replications and sowed in pots with different sowing rate (5:5 rye:hairy vetch,7:3=Italian:crimson, 6:4=oat:pea) on early March. $(^{15}NH_4)SO_4$ solution at. 99.8 atom%$^{15}N$ was applied to the each pot at the rate of 2kg N $ha^{-1}$ on $16^{th}$ April. Forage were harvested at ground level in heading stage and separated into legume and grass. Total N content and $^{15}N$ value were determined using a continuous flow stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry. DM yield of rye+vetch, Italian+crimson and oat+pea were 6,607, 3,213 and 4,312kg/ha, respectively. Proportion of N from fixation was 0.73(rye+vetch), 0.42(Italian+crimson) and 0.93(oat+pea). The percentages of N transfer from legume to grass were from 61% to 24% in different method by treatments and -35% to 21% in isotope dilution method.

  • This review summarises the biology, discovery and applications of single nucleotide polymorphisms in complex polyploid crop genomes, with a focus on the important oilseed crop $Brassica$ $napus$. $Brassica$ $napus$ is an allotetraploid species, and along with soybean and oil palm is one of the top three most important oilseed crops globally. Current efforts are well underway to $de$ $novo$ assemble the $B.$ $napus$ genome, following the release of the related $B.$ $rapa$ 'A' genome last year. The next generation of genome sequencing, SNP discovery and analysis pipelines, and the associated challenges for this work in $B.$ $napus$, will be addressed. The biological applications of SNP technology for both evolutionary and molecular geneticists as well as plant breeders and industry are far-reaching, and will be invaluable to our understanding and advancement of the $Brassica$ crop species.

두류가 첨가된 글루텐-프리 쌀쿠키의 품질 특성에 가공방법이 미치는 영향 (Effect of processing method on quality characteristics of gluten-free rice cookies containing legume flours)

  • 본 연구에서는 4가지 가공방법(침지, 삶음, 볶음, 가압볶음)에 의해 처리한 두류가루로 쿠키를 제조한 후 그들의 이화학적 특성과 텍스처 특성을 살펴보았다. 품질특성과 영양적 가치를 높이기 위하여 두류-찹쌀 혼합가루를 이용하여 글루텐-프리 쌀쿠키를 제조하였다. 가압볶음과 삶음에 의해 두류가루는 호화가 일어나 페이스팅 점도를 나타나지 않았으며 볶음처리에 의한 두류가루는 열처리에 의해 상호작용이 유도되어 호화온도가 증가하고 치반점도가 거의 나타나지 않은 특성을 보였다. 볶음처리한 두류가루로 제조된 쿠키는 대조군과 거의 유사한 색상을 나타냈으며 가압볶음이나 삶음 처리한 두류가루 보다는 높은 경도를 나타냈다. 녹두가루보다는 동부가루로 제조한 쿠키가 더 우수한 색상을 나타냈으며 경도도 더 높은 결과를 보였다. 결과적으로 본 연구에서 두류의 종류와 두류의 가공방법에 의해 글루텐-프리 쌀쿠키의 품질에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Comparative Rumen Degradability of Some Legume Forages between Wet and Dry Season in West Sumatra, Indonesia

  • An experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential nutritive value of five legume forages (leaves and twigs) in West Sumatra during wet and dry seasons. The chemical composition, in vitro dry matter (IVDMD), organic matter (IVOMD) and crude protein digestibility (IVCPD), in vitro gas characteristics and estimated metabolizable energy (ME) showed variation among legume forages and between different seasons. Crude protein (CP) ranged from 14.2 to 27.8% DM in the wet season, with a significant (p<0.05) reduction in dry season. C. pubescens, G. maculata, L. leucocephala and P. phaseloides showed the least reduction in CP content. The NDF, ADF and lignin were about 39.0, 26.5 and 6.1% DM, respectively in the wet season, and significantly (p<0.05) increased in the dry season, except for NDF of C. mucunoides and C. pubescens. For IVDMD, IVOMD and IVCPD significantly increased in the wet season, but values remained as high as over 50.0% of DM. The in vitro gas characteristics and metabolizable energy were significantly (p<0.05) higher in wet season than the dry season. During both seasons, the rate of constant (c) for G. maculata and ME content for C. pubescens and P. phaseloides were not significantly (p<0.05). Results demonstrated that P. phaseloides and L. leucocephala have a good nutritive value during both wet and dry seasons. Further studies on feeding trials are needed to quantify the animal responses when offered these legume forages.

두류의 첨가가 당뇨병 쥐의 내당능과 지질대사 및 지질과산화에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Legume Supplementation on the Glucose and Lipid Metabolism and Lipid Peroxidation in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats)

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of common Korean legumes as a high-fiber supplement in therapeutic diets for diabetic patients. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were used as animal models and four kinds of legumes, black soybean (BS), yellow soybean (YS), green pea (GP) and soybean curd residue (SCR) were tested as high-fiber supplements. Seven groups of normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were fed isocaloric experimental diets containing 8% dietary fiber from one of four legumes or purified cellulose and pectin for 6 weeks. The effects of the legumes on the glucose and lipid metabolism of diabetic rats was examined and compared with the effects of cellulose and pectin. The legume supplementation did not show any beneficial effect on glucose tolerance, however, it exhibited a plasma cholesterol-lowering effect in diabetic rats. The cholesterol-lowering action was especially strong in BS and the degree of the effect was comparable to that of pectin. The levels of total lipids, cholesterol, and triglyceride in the hepatic tissues of rats fed legume diets were similar to those of the pectin group. All legume supplements induced an increase in fecal steroid excretion. The fecal cholesterol contents were significantly high following the supplementations of YS and SCR (p < 0.05). The excretion of fecal bile acids in the BS and YS groups was significantly higher than it was in the pectin group (p < 0.05). Concentration of lipid peroxidation products in the blood and urine of diabetic animals was lower in the legume groups than in the cellulose group. The levels of hepatic lipid peroxidation products were significantly lower in the BS and YS groups than in the pectin group (p < 0.05). From the results of this study, the plasma cholesterol-lowering effect of BS is possibly due to the significant (p < 0.05) in-crease in fecal steroid excretion, which suggests that BS could be beneficial in improving abnormal lipid metabolism in diabetic rats. Quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of fruit dressing using lentil (Lens culinaris Med. cv, Silvina) legume

  • Dressing is a seasoned mixture usually used as a stuffing in food. Quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of fruit dressing using lentil legume were investigated. The four groups were divided into D-1(fruit dressing purchased from the local market in Deagu, Korea), D-2 (grapefruit-sugaring dressing prepared with grapefruit sugaring and lentil legume paste), D-3 (vinegar dressing purchased from the local market in Deagu, Korea), D-4 (pineapple-vinegar dressing prepared with pineapple vinegar and lentil legume paste), and then they were analyzed with regard to general compositions, Hunter's color value, mineral and free amino acid content and antioxidant activities. The pH and titratable acidity in all samples ranged from 2.9 to 4.6 and from 0.6 to 1.2%, respectively. The crude protein content were 2.29% for D-2 dressing and 4.03 for D-4 sample, while were not detected D-1 and D-3 samples. In case of Hunter's value, The ' L'and 'a' values of all samples ranged from 45.98 to 56.54 and from -1.59 to 3.30, respectively. The D-4 sample exhibited the higher levels of Ca (215.40 mg/kg), K (1,105.83 mg/kg), Mg (233.63 mg/kg) and Fe (13.78 mg/kg). The levels of heavy metals (As, Pb, Cd and Hg) in all samples were not detected. The contents of total amino acid in D-3 and D-4 samples were 8.269 and 3.419 mg/mL, respectively. The highest contents of total phenols($191.13{\mu}g\;GAE/mL$) and DPPH radical scavenging activity(93.69%, Inhibition) were observed in D-4 sample.

Effects Of Grass/Legume Pasture on Forage Production, Forage Nutritive Values and Live Weight Gain of the Grazing Heifer

  • A grazing trial was carried out to determine the effects of different grass/legume pastures on forage production, legume proportion, nutritive value, and animal performance. The pasture mixtures were mainly orchardgrass (OG) + ladino clover (T1), OG + alfalfa (T2), perennial ryegrass + alfalfa (T3), and grass alone mainly OG (T4). The pastures were rotationally grazed 7 times with heifers which had an initial liveweight of about 243 kg in 1991 and 1992. The average plant height at each grazing was 32.4 cm. The annual dry matter yield ranged from 9.19 MT in T4 to 9.61 MT/ha in T3, but no significant difference among different mixture combinations was found. The proportion of ladino clover in T1 mixtures rapidly increased from 21% to 68% during the grazing season. However, the proportion of alfalfa in T2 and T3 ranged from 12% to 23%. The contents of crude protein and calcium, respectively, in the forages were highest in T1 (23.2%, 0.68%) and lowest in T4 (18.5%, 0.13%), while crude fiber content showed the opposite trends. Liveweight gain was greatest on T1 (1.073 kg) and lowest on T4 (643 kg). It was concluded that pasture mixtures containing legume (ladino clover) can increase forage nutritive value and animal performance.

Interpretation of Agronomic Traits Variation of Sesame Cultivar Using Principal Component Analysis

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the growth characters and yield components of 18 collected sesame cultivars to get basic information on the variation for the sesame breeding using principal component analysis. All characters except days to flowering, days to maturity and 1,000 seed weight showed significantly different. Seed weight per 10 are showed higher coefficient of variance. Capsule bearing stem length and liter weight showed positive correlation with seed yield per 10 are. The principal components analysis grouped the estimated sesame cultivars into four main components which accounted for 83.7% of the total variation at the eigenvalue and its contribution to total variation obtained from principal component analysis. The first principal component ($Z_1$) was applicable to increase plant height, capsule bearing stem length and 1,000-seed weight. The second principal component ($Z_2$) negatively correlated with days to flowering and maturity by which it was applicable to shorten flowering and maturity date of sesame. At the scatter diagram, Yangbaek, Ansan, M1, M2, M4, M7 and M9 were classified as same group, but M10, Yanghuk, Kanghuk, M5, M6, M12 and M13 were classified as different group. This results would be helpful for sesame breeder to understand genetic relationship of some agronomic characters and select promising cross lines for the development of new sesame variety.

  • 山地草地開發파 聯關된 草地士爆改良 및 施R巴法 改善올 薦하여 Homes의 Systematic variations 方法으로 多量要素 ${\Sigma}$Anion : ${\Sigma}$Cation 適正施服比率 및 適正總養分(${\Sigma}$A+ ${\Sigma}$C) 施肥量을 決定코자 Grass-clover 混播我培條件에서 山地土壞을 供試한 Pot 試驗으로 遂行한 結果는 1. 混播條件에서 各構成草種別 收量提高를 위한 ${\Sigma}$A/${\Sigma}$C 適正施服比率 및 適正總養分濃度를 換算 하였다(Table 6 ). 未本科 및 混合救草의 適正 ${\Sigma}$A:${\Sigma}$C=2 : 1 (80, 320meq/pot 時) 와 3 : 2 (560, 800 meq時)를 보였고, 荳科목초는 未本科收草의 경우와는 相反되게 供히 約 1 : 2比率을 보였다. 2.. 適正總養分灌度는 混合收草 및 未本科收草에서는 ${\Sigma}$A/${\Sigma}$C比率이 낮아질수록 -.般的으로 높은 濃度를 보였으나, 荳科목초는 일관성 높은 없이 多少 變異福이 컸다. 3. 未本科 및 혼합목초에서는 ${\Sigma}$A/${\Sigma}C$C 比率이 커 질수록, 總養分禮度가 增加할수록 乾物收量이 增加하였으나, 높은 農度 (560, 800meq/pot) 에서는 ${\Sigma}$A/${\Sigma}$C=2.125 보다 1. 273 처리에서 有意性 있게 높은 收量을 보였다. 反面에 두과목초의 收量은 ${\Sigma}$C 比率이 높아질수록 收量增加를 보였고, ${\Sigma}$C 比率이 높은 條件에서만 總濃度 증가에 따르는 收量增加를 보였다. 4. 두과목초에서는 ${\Sigma}$C>${\Sigma}C$A比率에서 乾物收量에 對단 ${\Sigma}$C 효율이 높은것을(80meq 例外) 除外 하고는 各구성초중 供히 ${\Sigma}$A 및 ${\Sigma}$C比率이 낮을 때, 總養分濃度가 낮을때 各 ${\Sigma}$A 및 ${\Sigma}C$C 효율이 높았다. 5. 各구성草種의 收量 및 植生밟成比率이 ${\Sigma}$A/${\Sigma}$C比率 및 總、養分濃度와 이들의 相互作用에 크게 影響을 받았고, 未本科와 두과목초間은 大體로 相反된 特性을 보였다. 또한 士壞의 化學的 特性 및 건초중 無機養分의 含量이 處理에 따라 부분적으로 變化 되었다.

Ruminal and Intestinal Digestibility of Some Tropical Legume Forages

  • Two experiments were conducted to examine the degradation rates of 4 tropical legume forages in rumen and intestine of Kedah-Kelantan (KK) cattle. Three KK cattle, averaging $173{\pm}17.15kg$ each fitted with a permanent ruminal and a T-shaped duodenal cannulae were used. The cattle were fed a maintenance diet (1% DM of their body weight) composing of 60% oil palm frond (OPF) pellet and 40% of a legume mixture of Arachis pintoi (AP) and Leucaena throughout the study. The overall DM and CP degradabilities in the rumen for Gliricidia sepium (GS) and AP were significantly higher than those for Leucaena leucocephala-Bahru (LB) and Leucaena leucocephala-Rendang (LR). This implies that LB and LR would have higher dietary protein flows into the intestine for the more efficient enzymatic digestion. However, the results of the present study suggested only limited proportions of the ruminal undegraded protein in the Leucaenas were digested in the intestine.
