  • Recently, biological researches are required to deal with a large scale of data. While scientists used classical experimental approaches for researches in the past, it is possible to get more sophisticated observations easily with convergence of information technologies and biology. The study on diseases is one of the most important issues of the life science. Conventional services and databases provide users with information such as classification of diseases, symptoms, and medical treatments through web. However, it is hard to connect or develop them for other new services because they have independent and different criterions. It may be a factor that interferes the development of biology. In this paper, we propose an integrated data structure for the disease database, and design and implement a novel directory system for diseases as an infrastructure for developing other new services.

  • The openness of the Web allows any user to access any type of information easily at any time and anywhere. However, with function of easy access for useful information, internet has dysfunctions of providing users with harmful contents indiscriminately. Some information, such as adult content, is not appropriate for children. To protect children from these harmful contents, many filtering softwares are developed. However, these softwares can not prevent harmful contents, perfectly, because of some limitations. In this paper, we analyze existing eleven filtering softwares and state the limitation of these softwares. Furthermore, we propose requirements for new filtering software which overcomes the limitations, and describe framework of the new software.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the rat periodontal ligament cell viability under $0^{\circ}C/2$ MPa condition up to one week using in vivo 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-y1)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Materials and Methods: As soon as 110 upper molar teeth of rats were extracted, they were stored in Hartman's solution under $0^{\circ}C/2$ MPa condition for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 days each. All specimens were treated with in vivo MTT assay and the value of optical density was measured by ELISA reader. These values were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Result: There was no statistical difference on MTT value between immediate and 1 day storage group. There were statistically significant differences between 1 day and 2 days tsorage, 2 and 3 days storage groups, respectively. Teeth of 34, and 7 days storage groups showed significantly lower MTT valuesc ompared with shorter period storage groups. Conclusion: When the MTT values were substituted in standard curve, 1 day storage group at $0^{\circ}C/2$ MPa condition showed 68% cell viability when compared with immediate group. It dropped to 13% at 2 days, and to less than 5% at 3 days or more.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not acupuncture of GB34 produces a significant response of the modulation of somatomotor areas by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. The acupoint, GB34, located in the back of the knee, is known to be effective in recovering motor function after stroke. Using 3T MRI scanner, functional MR imaging of the whole brain was performed in 12 normal healthy subjects during two stimulation paradigms; acupuncture manipulation on GB 34 and sham points. This study investigates the activation of the mortor cortex elicited by a soft and an intensified stimulation of GB 34. Three different paradigms were carried out to detect any possible modulation of the Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) response in the somatomortor area to motor stimulation through acupuncture. Group analysis from seven individuals showed that bilateral sensorimotor areas (BA 3,4,6 and 7) showed stimulation related BOLD signal contrast of approximately 6% whereas very few areas were activated when sham stimulation is given. The present study shows that acupuncture fMRI study can be safely conducted in 3T MRI environment, and acupuncture stimulation in GB34 modulates the cortical activities of the somatomotor area in human. The present findings may shed light on the CNS mechanism of motor function by acupuncture and form a basis for future investigations of motor modulation circuits in the stroke patients.

  • The dynamics of phytoplankton community after the formatiom of turbidity was assessed at Dam barrage of Lake Imha from May 2003 to July 2004. The maximum turbidity of 1221 NTU during September and October 2003 was well correlated with heavy precipitation caused by Typoon Maemi. A total of 102 phytoplankton taxa was identified and the most abundant phytoplankton group was Bacillariophyceae with 63 taxa, followed by Chlorophyceae with 23 taxa, Cyanophyceae with 9 taxa, 3 taxa each of Synurophyceae and Cryptophyceae and Euglenophyceae with 1 taxon. The total standing crops ranged between 270 indls. $mL^{-1}$ and 4,515 indls. $mL^{-1}$ during the investigation Periods. The three species, Cryptomonas ovata, Cyclotella sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa predominated in sequence after the decrease of turbidity.

  • The Interferometric Monitoring of Gamma–ray Bright Active galactic nuclei (iMOGABA) program provides not only simultaneous multifrequency observations of bright gamma–ray detected active galactic nuclei (AGN), but also covers the highest Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) frequencies ever being systematically monitored, up to 129 GHz. However, observation and imaging of weak sources at the highest observed frequencies is very challenging. In the second paper in this series, we evaluate the viability of the frequency phase transfer technique to iMOGABA in order to obtain larger coherence time at the higher frequencies of this program (86 and 129 GHz) and image additional sources that were not detected using standard techniques. We find that this method is applicable to the iMOGABA program even under non–optimal weather conditions.

  • Objective : This study examined psychiatric characteristics of wounded persons of Daegu subway fire accident occurring in February 2003 after six years. Methods : 103 wounded persons completed psychometric measures at 2 months and 6 years after the accident. Changes of psychiatric symptoms were compared and factors affecting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) seriousness were examined. Results : In Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the scores of Psychopathic Deviate (Pd), Masculinity/ Femininity (Mf), Social Introversion (Si) scales were significantly changed over time. The scores of Symptoms Checklist-90-Revision subscales were mostly decreased over time, however, paranoid ideation (PAR) subsclae scores were not significantly changed over time. In all of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)-State, Beck Depression Inventory, Impact of Event Scale, and PTSD Checklist-Civilian, mean scores at 6 years after the accident were significantly lower than those at 2 months after the accident. However, STAI-Trait score was not significantly changed over time. Total seriousness of PTSD was found to be affected by quality of sleep. Conclusions : Psychiatric symptoms of subjects were largely improved over time, but distrust and doubt of others were continued. In addition, the wounded persons suffered from sleep problems. Therefore, early and continuous interventions of public institutions and public health specialists are needed for the wounded persons with chronic psychiatric disorders.

  • CKD-602 exerts its antitumor effect via inhibition of topoisomerase I in cancer cells. Multicellular spheroid (MCS) and Multicellular layers (MCLs) are known as in vitro 3-dimensional models which closely represent tumor conditions in vivo. In order to investigate the potential of CKD-602 against human colorectal tumors, we evaluated the anti-proliferative activity and penetration ability of CKD-602 in MCS and MCL cultures of DLD-l human colorectal cancer cells, respectively. The maximum effects($E_{max}$) induced by CKD-602 were significantly lower in MCS compared to monolayers (48% vs 92%). With prolonged drug exposure, the $IC_{50's}$ of CKD-602 decreased to $23.5{\pm}1.0nM$ in monolayers after 24 h exposure and $42.3{\pm}1.7nM$ in MCS after 6 days, respectively. However, no further increase in effect was observed for exposure time longer than growth doubling time (Td) in both cultures. Activity of CKD-602 was significantly reduced after penetration through MCL and also with cell-free insert membrane. In conclusion, CKD-602 showed significantly decreased anti-proliferative activity in 3D cultures (MCS) of human colorectal cancer cells. Tumor penetration of CKD-602 could not be determined due to loss of activity after penetration through cell free insert membrane, which warrants further evaluation using a modified model.
