This study was carried out to research antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants, Pueraria thunbergiana, Sophora flavescens, Lonicera japonica, Pinellia ternata, Dictamnus dasycarpus, Paeonia lactiflora, Angelica dahurica, Spirodela polyrhiza, Cryptotympana pustulata, Pinus densiflora, Cimicifuga heracleifolia, Bupleurum falcatum, Magnolia kobus, Artemisia princeps, Houttuynia cordata, Forsythia koreana, Arctium lappa, Castanea crenata, Aster tataricus, Citrus unshiu, Gardenia jasminoides, Ledebouriella seseloides, Hovenia dulcis, Prunus sargentii. The ethanol extracts of 24 medicinal plants were tested for the antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The extracts of Sophora flavescens, Pinus densiflora, Cimicifuga heracleifolia, Gardenia jasminoides and Ledebouriella seseloides showed antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The extracts of Pinus densiflora and Sophora flavescens among these medical plants showed significant antimicrobial activity against Streptcoccus mutans. These results suggested that the extracts from Pinus densiflora and Sophora flavescens could be the potential source of antimicrobial agents against S. mutans.
These studies were conducted to investigate the antiinflammatory effects and the mechanism of action of natural products. We used the methods of "carrageenan induced foot edema" , "PAF (platelet activating factor) induced foot edema" , "inhibition test of vascular permeability" , "inhibition test of white blood cell migration" , "formation of granuloma" and "adjuvant induced arthritis" to examine the antiinflammatory erects of Angelica gigas, Ledebouriella seseloides, Ginkgo biloba and Bamboo salt (Jukyom). The oral administration of the water extract of Angelica gigantis radix, the methanolic extract of Ginkgo folium and the aqueous solution of Bamboo salt showed antiinflammatory effect on carrageenan and PAF induced foot edema in SD rat at a dose of 1 g/kg. The same administration of methanolic extract of Ginkgo folium also inhibited the vascular permeability in mice. The aqueous solution of Bamboo salt inhibited the formation of ganuloma in SD rats at a oral dose of 1 g/kg. Angelica gigantis radix seems to have antiinflammatory effect by inhibition of PAF.
Umbelliferae medicinal crops have low germination under natural condition. Special objective of this study is to investigate morphological characteristics of seeds and effects of environmental factors such as light and temperature on their germination and seedling growth in Umbelliferae plants, using them as oriental medicine materials. Fruits of Umbelliferae are bi-partite type and form 2 seeds. Their oil canals and funiculus or carpaphore has apparently specific shape. Seed shape of Buplerum falcatum, Ligusticum acutilobum and Foeniculum vulgare are oblong, Ledeboutiella seseloides, Angelica dahurica, Angelica gigas elliptic, and Ostericum koreanum ovate. Color of seed coats varied from yellow to dark brown. Seed size was 3.2 to 6.9 mm in length, 1.7 to 4.9 mm in width. One thousand-seed weight of Buplerum falcatum was lowest(at 1,660 mg) and Ledebouriella seseloides and Angelica gigas were relatively highest(at 3,970 mg) having larger size than any others. Optimum temperatures for seed germination and seedling growth ranged from 20 to $25^{\circ}C$ and especially temperature at $25^{\circ}C$ improved seed germinations of Ledebouriella seseloides, Angelica dahurica and Ligusticum acutilobum regardless of light condition.
The nitrite scavenging effect of three kinds of edible wild plants belong to Umbelliferaeceae family was investigated. The contents of crude protein, crude lipid and $\beta$-carotene of the plants were in the range of 22.99∼31.00%, 3.51∼5.08% and 5.40∼19.81 mg%, respectively. The content of ascorbic acid was very low and selenium was not detected in any samples. The contents of linoleic acid and linolenic acid were 66.46∼77.44%. The content of total phenol was 875.77 mg% in Ledebouriella seseloides WOLFF, which was the highest among the samples. The methanol fraction of the plant extract showed higher nitrite scavenging effect than the water fraction. The nitrite scavenging effects of the samples were the highest at pH 1.2 and lowest at pH 6.0, suggesting that it's pH dependent. Nitrite scavenging effect of methnol-soluble fractions obtained from Ledebouriella seseloides WOLFF was 95.3% at pH 1.2, which was the greatest among tested samples. There was a high correlation between the nitrite scavenging effect and the total phenol content.
BACKGROUND: Plant factory system of an artificial light type using Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs), fluorescent light, or metal halide lamp instead of sun light is an ultimated method for plant production without any pesticides regardless of seasonal changes. The plant factory is also completely isolated from outside environmental conditions such as a light, temperature, or humidity compared to conventional greenhouse. Light-environment control such as a quality or quantity in the plant factory system is essential for improving the growth and development of plant species. However, there was little report that the effects of various light qualities provided by LEDs on Ledebouriella seseloides growth under the plant factory system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ledebouriella seseloides seedlings transplanted at urethane sponge were grown in the plant factory system of a horizontal type with LED artificial lights for 90 days. Yamazaki solution for hydroponic culture of the seedlings was regularly irrigated by the deep flow technique (DFT) system on the culture gutters. Electrical Conductivity (EC) and pH of the solution was recorded at 1.4 ds/m and 5.8 in average, respectively during the experimental period. Number of unfolded leaves, leaf length, shoot fresh and dry weight of the seedlings were three times measured in every 30 days after beginning of the experiment. Blue LEDs, red LEDs, and fluorescent lights inside the plant factory were used as light sources. Conventional fluorescent lamps were considered as a control. In all the treatment, light intensity was maintained at $100{\mu}mol/m^2/s$ on the culture bed. Fresh weight of the seedlings was 3.7 times greater in the treatment with the mixture radiation of fluorescent light and blue+red LEDs (1:3 in energy ratio; Treatment FLBR13) than in fluorescent light treatment (Treatment FL). In FLBR13 treatment, dry weight per seedling was two times greater than in FL or BR11 treatment of blue+red LEDs (1:3 in energy ratio; Treatment BR11) during the culture period. Increasing in number of unfolded leaves was also significantly affected by the FLBR13 treatment comparing with BR11 treatment. CONCLUSION(S): Hydroponic culture of Ledebouriella seseloides seedlings was successfully achieved in the plant factory system with mixture lights of blue, red LEDs and fluorescent lights. Shoot growth of the seedlings was significantly promoted by the FLBR13 with the mixture radiation of fluorescent light, blue, and red LEDs under 1:3 mixture ratio of blue and red LEDs during the experimental period compared to conventional light conditions.
This study was investigated the improvement effects of Ledebouriella seseloides (LS) ethanol extracts on lipid parameters in an ovariectomized animal model. Sixty, nine-week old female Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups as follows: sham-operated rats (SHAM), ovariectomized rats (OVX-CON) and ovariectomized rats that were treated with LS ethanol extracts (50 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day, respectively). The diets were fed to the rats for six weeks after their operation. The total-cholesterol and triglyceride contents on serum increased in the OVX-CON group compared to the SHAM group, but supplementation with the LS extract caused these factors to decrease. Notably, the serum LDL-cholesterol concentration in the supplemented 200 mg/kg/day LS ethanol extract group was significantly more reduced than the OVX-CON group. In addition, the platelet aggregation ability was lower in groups treated with LS than in the OVX-CON group. The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was lower in the LS extract group compared to the OVX-CON group. Collagen content, in bone and cartilage, were reduced by ovariectomy, but the supplemented LS extract groups exhibited higher concentrations in their bones. According to these results, the improvement effects of LS extract on serum lipid parameters and osteogenesis in ovariectomized rats were illuminated.
The occurrence of falcarinol(n-heptadeca-1, 9-dien-4,6-diyn-3-ol)in the umbelliferous plants such as Ladebouriella seseloides WOLFF., Cnidium officinale MAKINO, Foeniculum vulgare GAERTNER, Torilis japonica(HOUTT.) DC. Bupleurum falcatum L.,Angelica gigas NAKAI, Oenanthe javanica (BL.) DC. and Daucus carota var. sativa DC. was investigated using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(GC/MS). Falcarinol was found in the root of Ledebouriella seseloides, the stem and the root of Oenanthe javanica, and the root of Daucus carota var. sativa in which its contents were $1,055\;{\mu}g/g$, $289\;{\mu}g/g$, $179\;{\mu}g/g$, and $212\;{\mu}g/g$, respectively, while it was not found in the other plants.
Damages of medicinal crops by thrips and identification of thrips species were investigated by periodic surveys on major medicinal crops, Platycodon grandiflorum, Schizandra chinensis, Codonopsis lanceolata, Lycium chinense, Bupleurum falcatum, Ledebouriella seseloides, Angelica gigas, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Liriope platyphylla, Atractyloides sp., once or twice a month in Suwon, Eumseong, Jecheon, Pyeongchang, Chyungyang from May to October in 2012. Thrips and their damages were found at all of the medicinal crops investigated, mostly occurring at early growing stages of each medicinal crop and causing apical meristem region withered, thereby inhibiting the growth of plants. For species identification of thrips collected from each medicinal crops, DNA from each individual was extracted and ITS2 and COI regions were amplified by PCR. As a result, Frankliniella intonsa, Thrips tabaci, and Megalurothrips distalis have been identified as dominant species on medicinal crops in open field, whereas Frankliniella occidentalis was restricted to Lycium chinense in which protected cultivation. This study suggests that the occurrence of thrips species on medicinal crops seems to be affected by host specificity and environmental factors such as cultivation types.
