Each kinds of the leather process wastes which is occurred in the leather making process is almost more than 50% on the basis of the raw hide. The emitted process wastes are important oil and fats and protein resources because they are composed of animal oil and fats and fibrous protein. But most of them are incinerate or filled up simply as the industrial wastes without applying to recycling into the other use. Thus the problems of environmental pollution are becoming more critical and the processing cost of the leather process wastes (40,000~60,000 won) is a heavy burden on the production cost. Because the organic wastes such as fleshing scrap, pelt scrap are high fetid, its unlawful abandonment without being processed properly causes the occurrence of secondary pollution by an offensive odor and leakage of waste water. Thus we made the re-resource experiments in order to resolve this problems. The principal contents of this study are to process the collected leather waste scrape through separate the oil and fat ingredients with various propert by processing various chemicals and enzymes on the next effector. The re-resource application of separated oil and fat ingredients produced chemical for leather applicable to manufacturing process of leather through chemical transformation process(sulphation reaction, sulphitation reaction etc.) of oil and fats.
In this study, eco-friendly functional leather was developed by recycling wastes such as eel skin, marigold(Tagetas erecta l.), hinoki cypress(Chamaecyparis obtusa). The hot water extracts of marigold and hinoki cypress leaves were freeze-dried at $-80^{\circ}C$ to prepare colorant powder. The dyeing of eel leather with marigold was carried out to investigate the effects of dyeing conditions, mordanting on dye uptake, color, morphological change, and color fastness. Considering shrinkage of eel leather caused by dyeing, the optimum dyeing conditions were $60^{\circ}C$ of dyeing temperature and 60 min of dyeing time at 1:100 of bath ratio, and color of the dyed eel leather was Y to YR Munsell series. In order to prevent the degradation of leather from microbe, we conducted combination dyeing with marigold and hinoki cypress leave colorants. In this case, the combination dyed eel leathers showed excellent antimicrobial activity with above 99% bacterial reduction rate against S. aurieus and K. pneumoniae. It was confirmed that all of the dyed eel leathers were sufficient to meet the Korean Standard for color fastness of leather products. It can be applied practically for the development of eco-friendly functional leather by utilizing some useful active components extracted from plant resources and by recycling food wastes.
Information on the heating values of municipal solid wastes is very important in evaluating the feasibility of incineration and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) manufacture. This paper describes the forecasting methods about the lower heating values of municipal solid wastes. The lower heating values are forecast by the heating values of physical components. The municipal solid wastes consist of paper, food wastes, textiles, plastics, wood and rubber (contained leather). These are the physical components of municipal solid wastes.
This experiment were carried out to clarify the effects of several factory wastes on the emergence and seedling growth of five crop species, rice, Chinese cabbage, melon, and tomato. Wastes of three factories treated by several concentrations on the soil in which crop were seeded. In rice seedling experiments, the rice seedlings were treated with factory wastes hydroponically. Factory wastes used in the experiment were obtained from leather, phenol resin, and dye factory. The growth of rice seedlings was inhibited by each factory wastes, but the dry weight of rice seedling was increased by the low concentration below 1/16 dilution of leather factory waste. During 15 days, dry matter accumulation of rice seedlings treated with undiluted factory wastes decreased to 46.0, 51.4, -5.4% of control by treating wastes of phenol resin, leather, and dye factory respectively. The injury of crops by leather factory waste was severe in tomato but slight in barley. Waste of phenol resin factory affects highly both on Chinese cabbage and on melon. When dye factory waste was treated on each crop, all plants died in the treatments of waste solution which diluted to 1/8 of original waste. Tomato and melon were most sensitive crop species to the waste of dye factory. Although the responses of crops to each factory waste were various, the degree of injuries were more higher in vegetables than cereal crops.

Once of recent issue in the leather industry is disposal of shaving scrap containing chromium. Shaving scrap is indispensible generated by control of the final thickness in the leather making process. It is the flesh layer of the skin consisting mainly of collagen. More recently, we have tried to improve the quality of the isolated gelatin. The purpose of this research was to extract gelatin for agricultural usage. As a result, it does not contain Cr and could obtained to a good gelatin that have more than 130,000Da. average molecular weight, more than 30 mps viscosity and more than 100g jelly strength. Gelatin that is extracted by alkaline condition expected to be available to high performance gelatin such as material of organic fertilizer(ex, Nitrogen-release fertilizer).
In this study, eco-friendly natural dyeing for pig leather was explored by using onion skin which is food waste. Sodium caseinate was used as a pre-treatment agent to improve dyeability of pig leather and its effect on dye uptake was investigated according to treatment concentration. Dye uptake of the pre-treated pig leather was increased by about two times compared to untreated one at 0.2% pre-treatment concentration. Onion skin colorant imparted YR color on pig leather. After mordanting, the color of pretreated/dyed pig leather was varied from brick-red to khaki shades. However, mordanting did not improved dye uptake of the pre-treated/dyed pig leather significantly. The color-fastnesses of un-mordanted samples to light, dry cleaning, rubbing were grades 3-4, 5, and 4, respectively, which is good enough to meet all Korean Standard for Fastness of leather products. After mordanting, the light fastness of pig leather was improved to 4, 4-5 grade. The efficacy of sodium caseinate as a pre-treatment agent for pig leather was verified by improved dye uptake and good colorfastness. And, the natural dyeing of pig leather using food waste would be a significant sustainable way in terms of eco-friendliness and reuse of biomass to reduce environmental pollution.
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of eco-friendly leather dyeing by utilizing food wastes. Natural dyeing of eel skin was attempted using onion peels which have been used commonly for natural dyeing of textile fabrics. Eel skin is a by-product from fishery processing and is used mainly for making leather products. The colorant was extracted from onion peels in boiling water, concentrated, and freeze-dried. Dyeing of eel skin was carried out to study the effects of dyeing conditions, mordant type and mordanting method on dye uptake, color change, drape stiffness and colorfastness. The optimum dyeing conditions were $60^{\circ}C$ of dyeing temperature, 60min of dyeing time at 1:100($H_2O$ 90%: ethanol 10%) of bath ratio. The onion peels produced yellowish color on eel skin. The pre-mordanting was effective than the post-mordanting. As a result of the drape stiffness measurement, the Fe-mordanted sample was somewhat stiffer comparing to other mordanted samples. The light fastness of the non-mordant dye was excellent in 3-4 grade. Drycleaning fastness and rubbing fastness showed excellent results, but fastness was not significantly improved by mordanting.

Fleshing scrap is a kind of wastes produced during leather making process and used in the test of manufacturing biodiesel. The early step of manufacturing biodiesel is fat recovery from fleshing scrap. Hence, we investigated the influence of the way of fat recovery on the fatty acid composition. We used three different recovery ways, that is chemical method by protein decomposition with acid/fat recovering, physical method by protein denaturalization with heat and vacuum/fat pressing, and biodiesel method by protein decomposition/fat recovering. The biological method yielded the best results in terms of appearance transparency. It was most effective to lower acid value. Also the recovered fat by biological method would be favorable methyl-ester reaction raw material for biodiesel because it contains more than 5% of oleic acid among unsaturated fatty acid.

Pretreatment of eliminating FFA is needed to make biodiesel from animal fat recovered from leather wastes because its acid value is high. This study was carried out to investigate the influence of 4 different pretreatment methods, which are heterogeneous catalyst method, ion exchange resin method, low pressure.high temperature method, and alkali method on the eliminating FFA and fatty acid composition. The results showed that the rate of eliminating FFA increased in the order of alkali method > catalyst method > low pressure high temperature method > ion exchange method. In the case of pretreatment of alkali method using NaOH, the rate of eliminating FFA appeared more than 86% regardless of acid value. Therefore, it was considered that alkali method using NaOH was the most effective in the view of economical and productive aspects, taking it into account that the acid value of animal fat recovered from fleshing scrap generated during leather making processes was 7 to 8.
