Since the application of relatively high levels of heavy metals in the compost poses a potential hazard to plants and animals, the content of heavy metals in the compost with animal manure is important to know if it is as a fertilizer. Measurement of heavy metals content in the compost by chemical methods usually requires numerous reagents, skilled labor and expensive analytical equipment. The objective of this study, therefore, was to explore the application of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS), a nondestructive, cost-effective and rapid method, for the prediction of heavy metals contents in compost. One hundred and seventy two diverse compost samples were collected from forty-seven compost facilities located along the Han river in Korea, and were analyzed for Cr, As, Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb levels using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. The samples were scanned using a Foss NIRSystem Model 6500 scanning monochromator from 400 to 2,500 nm at 2 nm intervals. The modified partial least squares (MPLS), the partial least squares (PLS) and the principal component regression (PCR) analysis were applied to develop the most reliable calibration model, between the NIR spectral data and the sample sets for calibration. The best fit calibration model for measurement of heavy metals content in compost, MPLS, was used to validate calibration equations with a similar sample set (n=30). Coefficient of simple correlation (r) and standard error of prediction (SEP) were Cr (0.82, 3.13 ppm), As (0.71, 3.74 ppm), Cd (0.76, 0.26 ppm), Cu (0.88, 26.47 ppm), Zn (0.84, 52.84 ppm) and Pb (0.60, 2.85 ppm), respectively. This study showed that NIRS is a feasible analytical method for prediction of heavy metals contents in compost.
Records from a total of 202 crossbred pigs were classified by their ear type and coat color to examine the presence of interrelationships with growth performances. Crossbred pigs were F2 generations of full sib family out of ten Landrace sows bred by 5 Korean domestic boars. Heavily drooped ear type was predominant, 195 out of 202 pigs over the other two types (1 straight and 6 slightly drooped). Coat colors were classified as four categories, all white, all black, dominant white or dominant black. Ratio among coat color categories did not fall within Mendelian principle of independence regarding two loci involved. There was dependency between ear type and coat color. However, due to rarity of ear types other than heavy drooped, dependency comes from distribution of those rare ear types. Three least squares models to test the effect of ear type and coat colors on growth performances were analyzed. First model analyzed effects on birth weight, body weight at 3 and 6 weeks and ADG' before weaning and between 3 and 5 weeks of age. This model included sex in addition to ear type and coat color. Second model analyzed postweaning growth traits (initial weight, final weight and ADG between these periods) upon initiation of performance testing. This model included effects of sex, test group and start age (as a covariate) in addition. Third model was fit for fasted weight before slaughter and included the effects of sex, test group and age at slaughter (as a covariate). The effects of sex and ear type were not significant source of variation for all traits. Test group was a significant source of variation for all the postweaning traits. Effect of coat color was not significant until the initiation of performance testing and became significant then after. Least squares means of dominantly black pigs were significantly lower than the other three coat colored pigs in final weight around 195 days of age and in ADG from the start of performance test and final weight measure.
Regression analysis has become a standard statistical tool in the behavioral science. Because of its widespread popularity. regression has been often misused. Such is the case when the dependent variable is a qualitative measure rather than a continuous, interval measure. Regression estimates with a qualitative dependent variable does not meet the assumptions underlying regression. It can lead to serious errors in the standard statistical inference. Logit model is recommended as alternatives to the regression model for qualitative dependent variables. Researchers can employ this model to measure the relationship between independent variables and qualitative dependent variables without assuming that logit model was derived from probabilistic choice theory. Coefficients in logit model are typically estimated by the method of Maximum Likelihood Estimation in contrast to ordinary regression model which estimated by the method of Least Squares Estimation. Goodness of fit in logit model is based on the likelihood ratio statistics and the t-statistics is used for testing the null hypothesis.
This paper presents a sensitivity analysis to obtain best fit of hydraulic parameters of leaky fractal aquifer. The sensitivity analysis uses the least squares method. The hydraulic parameters (generalized transmissivity and generalized storage coefficient) can be easily determined by the sensitivity analysis for various flow dimensions and different values of the leakage factor. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis was applied to variable-rate pump tast at several abstraction wells, A computer program was developed to evaluate the hydraulic parameters by the sensitivity analysis.
The 87Rb quadrupole coupling constants (e2qQ/h) and the asymmetry parameters (η) in RbMnCl3 were determined from a nonlinear least-squares fit to the 87Rb NMR powder spectra. The spectra were acquired in the temperature range from 260K to 330K. An important feature in this work is the determination of the quadrupole coupling constants and the asymmetry parameters for two physically nonequivalent Rb sites, Rb(I) and Rb(II), as a function of temperature. In addition, a structural phase transition at room temperature was conformed with the changes in the quadrupole coupling constant and the asymmetry parameter of Rb(II) site.
This research estimated decreased vibration level as quantitative according to change of track system on Seoul Subway Line No. 1 from existing ballasted track system(Pandrol type clip) to concrete track system(Youbgdan type isolation rubber clip). Following change to concrete system, vibration level at tunnel floor decreased between 4-8dB(V). Vibration equations suggested in this paper consider the velocity of train and can estimate quantitative vibration response. These are divided by ultimate limit state($\beta$=0), serviceability limit state($\beta$=1.28) and safety state($\beta$=3), respectively. The reliability index, $\beta$=0, means 50% data line obtained by least squares best-fit line. The reliability index $\beta$=1.28 and 3 represent boundaries below 90% and 99.9% respectively.

In order to use Kriging, one has to estimate three parameters(nugget, sill and range) of semivariogram, which shows the relationship in the given two sites. A visual fit of the semivariogram parameters to a few standard models is widely used. But, it does not give the suitable results and not provide the automated process of Kriging. The gradient based nonlinear least squares is another choices to estimate three parameters, but it has some problems such as initial value problem. In this paper, we suggest the genetic algorithm as a compatible alternative method to solve the above mentioned problem. Finally, we estimate three parameters of semivariogram of rain-fall by adapting the genetic algorithm, compute Kriging estimate and conclude its effectiveness and compatibility.

The purpose of this paper is to present and establish a procedure to predict the prestress forces during the service life of the structure. The statistical approach of this procedure is using the in-situ measurement data of the post-tensioning system to develop a nonlinear regression analysis. The method of least squares is used to fit a certain function a set of data. Use of a nonlinear model is achieved by its logarithmic transformation and sunsequent use of linear-regression theory. The regression analysis result can be used to check the prestress force during the service life so that the remaining prestress force is equal to or exceeds the design requirement. Results from the measurement data of PSC box girder bridge structure were used to demonstrate the procedures.
This paper presents a method where the best focues points are calculated using line fitting. Two datasets are selected for each pixel based on the maximum value which is calculated using Laplacian operator. Then linear regression model is used to find lines that approximate these datasets. The best fit lines are found using least squares method. After approximating the two lines, their intersection point is calculated and weights are assigned to calculate the new value for the depth map.

Shapiro and Wilk (1972) developed a test for exponentiality with origin and scale unknown. The procedure consists of comparing the generalized least squares estimate of scale with the estimate of scale given by the sample variance. However the test statistic is inconsistent ; that is, the power of the test will not approach 1 as the sample size increases. Hence we give a test based on the ratio of two asymptotically efficient estimates of scale. We also have conducted a power study to compare the test procedures, using Monte Carlo samples from a wide range of alternatives. It is found that the suggested statistics have higher power for the alternatives with the coefficient of variation greater that or equal to 1.
