  • Wireless LAN system is evolving toward high-speed data transmission and more accurate channel estimation is necessarily required to improve communication performance. The PLCP preamble field in IEEE 802.11 based wireless MODEM consists of ten short symbols and two long symbols and is used for synchronization and channel estimation. The existing least square (LS) channel estimation is based on only two long training symbols. After estimating channel response separately by using each long training symbol, the final channel estimation is obtained by the average of each estimation. In this paper, a new channel estimation algorithm is presented to improve the performance of the existing LS channel estimation algorithm. From the fact that the short training symbol consists of 12 non-zero subcarriers, it gives us a clue of being able to additionally estimate at least one fourth of channel coefficients. The new LS algorithm performs channel estimation based on both two long training symbols and a short training symbol. The proposed LS algorithm shows a little bit performance improvement over the existing LS estimation and it will be able to be applied to the IEEE 802.11p WAVE system.

  • A joint channel estimation and data detection technique for a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication system is proposed. It combines the least square (LS) training based channel estimation (TBCE) scheme with sphere decoding. In this new approach, channel estimation is enhanced with the help of blind symbols, which are selected based on their correctness. The correctness is determined via sphere decoding. The performance of the new scheme is studied through simulation in terms of the bit error rate (BER). The results show that the proposed channel estimation has comparable performance and better computational complexity over the existing semi-blind channel estimation (SBCE) method.

  • The IEEE 802.11p-based wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) [1] communication is a method used exclusively for wireless communication on the road. This technique enables information sharing not only among moving vehicles but also between vehicles and infrastructure [2]. As part of WAVE communication, data is transmitted to and from vehicles in motion; in this case, it is difficult to determine the channel accurately in an outdoor environment owing to the Doppler shift [3]. This paper proposes a new channel estimation scheme for enhancing the reception performance of the IEEE 802.11p-based WAVE system. The proposed technique obtains the initial channel value by estimating the least square in the time domain by inserting a pilot signal for channel estimation into the IEEE 802.11p virtual subcarrier. Subsequently, a least mean square algorithm is applied to the initial channel value to update the estimated channel value. The simulation results obtained using the proposed channel estimation technique confirm its remarkable efficiency.

  • Based on superimposed training methods, a novel time-varying multipath channel estimation scheme is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. We first develop a linear least square channel estimator, and meanwhile find the optimal superimposed sequences with respect to the channel estimates' mean square error. Next, a low-rank approximated channel estimator is obtained by using the singular value decomposition. As demonstrated in simulations, the proposed scheme achieves not only better performance but also higher bandwidth efficiency than the conventional pilot-aided approach.

  • In this paper, we propose the channel estimation scheme for Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) downlink system. The proposed scheme uses the fast fourier transform (FFT) interpolation scheme for the user moving at a high speed. The FFT interpolation scheme converts the channel frequency response obtained from least square (LS) or minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation scheme to time domain channel impulse response by taking the inverse FFT (IFFT). After windowing the channel response in the time domain, we can obtain the channel frequency response by taking the FFT. We perform the system level simulation based on 20MHz bandwidth of 3GPP LTE-A downlink system. Simulation results show that the proposed channel estimation scheme can improve signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio (SINR), throughput, and spectral efficiency of conventional system.

  • Underwater communication (UWC) is widely used in coastal surveillance and early warning systems. Precise channel estimation is vital for efficient and reliable UWC. The sparse direct-adaptive filtering algorithms have become popular in UWC. Herein, we present an improved adaptive convex-combination method for the identification of sparse structures using a reweighted normalized leastmean-square (RNLMS) algorithm. Moreover, to make RNLMS algorithm independent of the reweighted l1-norm parameter, a modified sparsity-aware adaptive zero-attracting RNLMS (AZA-RNLMS) algorithm is introduced to ensure accurate modeling. In addition, we present a quantitative analysis of this algorithm to evaluate the convergence speed and accuracy. Furthermore, we derive an excess mean-square-error expression that proves that the AZA-RNLMS algorithm performs better for the harsh underwater channel. The measured data from the experimental channel of SPACE08 is used for simulation, and results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm for underwater channel estimation performs better than the earlier schemes.

  • In frequency-division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the computational complexity of downlink channel estimation is proportional to the number of antennas at a base station. Therefore, effective channel estimation techniques may have to be studied. In this paper, novel channel estimation algorithms using adaptive techniques such as Kalman and least mean square (LMS) filters are proposed in a channel model with temporal and spatial correlation.

  • MIMO-OFDM which is one of core techniques for the high-speed mobile communication system requires the efficient channel estimation method with low estimation error and computational complexity, for accurately receiving data. In this paper, we propose a channel estimation algorithm with low channel estimation error comparing with LS which is primarily employed to the MIMO-OFDM system, and with low computational complexity comparing with MMSE. The proposed algorithm estimates channel vectors based on the LMS adaptive algorithm in the time domain, and the estimated channel vector is sent to the detector after FFT. We also suggest a preamble architecture for the proposed MIMO-OFDM channel estimation algorithm. The computer simulation example is provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of pilot symbol assisted channel estimation and equalization schemes for OFDM systems over frequency-selective time-varying channels and propose methods to improve the system performance. In the least square(LS) and linear minimum mean square error(MMSE) channel estimation, time domain windowing is introduced for banding the frequency domain channel matrix. The linear MMSE and decision feedback equalization schemes are employed with the pilot symbols for channel estimation taken into account in the equalization process. To reduce computational complexity, the band LU matrix factorization algorithm is introduced in solving the linear systems involved in the equalization, and the performances are compared with the known previous results by computer simulations. When time domain windowing is employed in the decision feedback equalization, the matrix related with the decision feedback process is shown to be unhanded and the resultant performance degradation is analyzed.

  • In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, linear channel estimation algorithms are widely applied owing to their simple structures. However, they may cause pilot contamination, which affects the subsequent data detection performance. Therefore, herein, for an uplink multicell massive multiuser MIMO system, we consider using an alternating projection (AP) for channel estimation to eliminate the effect of pilot contamination and improve the performance of data detection in terms of the bit error rates as well. Even though the AP is nonlinear, it iteratively searches the best solution in only one dimension, and the computational complexity is thus modest. We have analyzed the mean square error with respect to the signal-to-interference ratios for both the cooperative and non-cooperative multicell scenarios. From the simulation results, we observed that the channel estimation results via the AP benefit the following signal detection more than that via the least squares for both the cooperative and non-cooperative multicell scenarios.
