Iron Status in Female College Students in the Gyeongnam Area (경남 일부지역 여대생의 철 영양상태에 관한 연구)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate iron status and related factors in female college students residing in Gyeongnam. The subjects were divided into normal (40.8%) and iron deficiency (ID) groups (59.2%) by iron status. Mean height, weight, lean body mass, percent body fat, body mass index, and wrist to hip ratio were not significantly different between the groups, but basic metabolic rate was significantly higher in the normal group than that in the ID group. The levels of hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. However, total iron binding capacity was significantly lower in the normal group than that in the ID group. Daily intake of protein, heme-Fe, niacin, and vitamin C were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. The mean intake of protein, Fe, niacin, vitamin $B_{12}$, and vitamin C based on the Korean recommended intake (RI) were significantly higher in the normal group than those in the ID group. The mean intakes of Ca, vitamin $B_{12}$, and folate in both groups were < 75% of the Korean RI. In conclusion, increasing dietary heme-Fe and vitamin C may be helpful for preventing ID anemia in female college students.

Characterizing of Four Obesity Types in Obese Women Based on the Questionnaire of Diseases and Physical Tests (여성 비만의 유발유형별 일반 증상과 검사 특성 연구)

  • Objectives : To characterize four types of obesity and to effectively improve the treatment of obesity through Oriental medicine Methods : At 00 Oriental Medical Center, 203 female subjects who intented to lose weight were requested to complete a questionnaire. These participants were also given physical tests. The Questionnaire consisted of questions both about general life style and obesity in oriental medicine framework. The physical tests were blood tests, a body composition via Inbody 2.0, and physical strength tests. One-way analysis of variance was done to compare the means of items and physical tests between four types of obesity. Duncan was used by post hoc test. Results : 1. Significant differences between obesity type III and obesity type IV in ever tried to lose weight, childhood obesity and excercise times were observed in the questionnaire of general life style(p<0.05). 2. Ducan test showed significant differences between four obesity types in diseases (p<0.05). 3. Significant differences between four obesity types in height, % body fat muscular endurance, soft lean mass, fat mass, Trigliceride, Total cholesterol and ${\gamma}-GTP$ were observed (p<0.05). Conclusions : Further clinical research is necessary in the four types of obesity explored. The diagnosis and treatment based on these types should be further studied.

The Effects of Aqua-Exercise on Body compositions and Blood components in the Elderly Women (수중운동이 노인여성의 신체성분과 혈액성분에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aqua-exercise program on fitness and blood factors in the elderly women. Subjects were fifteen members living in Daejon(15 females), between 65 and 77 years of age. The subjects was put in the aqua-exercise program for 8 weeks, between July and september, 2001. The results of this study were as follows : 1. After the exercise program, there are significant differences of Fat Mass(p<0.05), Fat Distribution(p<0.01), Obesity(p<0.01), Soft Lean Mass(p<0.05). 2. After the exercise program, subjects showed Meaningful increase of SGOT(p<0.01), SGPT(p<0.001).

Comparative Analysis of Food Habits and Bone Density Risk Factors between Normal and Risk Women Living in the Seoul Area (서울지역 성인여성의 골밀도 정상군.위험군의 식습관과 식품섭취 관련요인의 비교분석)

  • This study was carried out to compare bone density risk factors affecting women's BMD, and to examine the relationship age, lifestyle and dietary habits for bone health by physical measurement and questionnaires. The subjects of this study were 194 women living in the Seoul area. When the subjects were divided into normal and risk groups, BMD, height, weight, BMI, total body water, soft lean mass, fat free mass, protein, mineral, body-fat of normal group were much higher than those of the risk group. The breakfast eating rate of the normal group was much higher than that of the risk group, walking time was significantly longer and exercise was more (p < 0.05). The normal group had more frequent intakes of tunas, squid, radishes, the green parts of radish, cucumbers, carrots and Iucchinis, tomatoes, and grapes than the risk group (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05). In conclusion, breakfast eating, exercise, intakes of some foods such as anchovies, radishes, carrots, zucchinis and tomatoes were significantly important factor to prevent bone density risk.

A Study of the Factors Affecting Blood Iron Status in Female College Students (여대생의 혈중 철 영양 상태에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the iron status and its related factors in female college students residing in Gyeongnam. The prevalence of iron deficiency among subjects ranged from 3.4% in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) to 43.7% in ferritin. Weight, lean body mass (LBM) and body mass index (BMI) were positively correlated with ferritin concentration, but negatively correlated with total iron binding capacity (TIBC). Among the nutrients, vitamin A and B2 were major predictors of elevated iron status. Meal regularity was positively correlated with Fe and ferritin concentration, and meal number with transferrin saturation (TS), meal quantity with red blood cell (RBC) and hematocrit (Hct). Consumption of fruit, meat, fish and poultry showed strong positive correlation with hematological indices. Therefore, increasing vitamin A, B2, C, and iron intakes as well as maintenance of a healthy weight may be helpful in preventing iron deficiency in female college students.

Effects of Nutrients Intakes on Development of Osteoporosis in Korean Postmenopausal Women (폐경후 우리나라 여성의 영양 섭취 상태가 골다공증 발병에 미치는 영향)

  • The relationship of nutrients intake and bone mineral density (BMD) was investigated in 285 Korean postmenopausal women (age 40-70 y) consisted of 65 normal women and 159 osteopenia patients who don't have other diagnosed disease. BMD was measured at the spine (vertebrae L2-4) and femur (neck, Ward's triangle and trochanter). Height, weight, body mass index(BMI), lean body mass(LBM), body fat(Bfat) and dietary intakes of animal calcium(animal Ca), protein and phosphorus per 1,000kcaI intake were correlated with BMD of the spine and the femur positively(p<0.05). Women with an animal calcium intake < 315mg/d (mean % animal Ca/total Ca intake > 50%) exhibited significantly lower BMD of the spine and Ward's triangle than that of women with an intake > 315mg/d, p<0.OS. When subjects were grouped by diagnosis into 3 groups (normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis group), animal Ca intake of osteoporosis group (mean animal Ca intake 261mg) was significantly lower than those of the other two groups (mean animal Ca intake 306mg and 297mg, respectively), p < 0.05. These results suggest that balanced nutrients intake and increased animal Ca in the diet is likely to be beneficial in reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women.

  • Purpose: This study was done to compare of adult body composition and body image before and after regular exercise program at a sports center. Method: The participants were 32 adults who were beginning regular exercise at a sports center in D city. The body composition was measured by body weight, soft lean mass, fat mass, percent body fat, fat distribution, degree of obesity and BMI, using the Inbody 3.0. Body image. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using paired t-test. Results: 1. Significant improvement was shown in body composition. 2. The score for body image increased after the program, but the change was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The short-term exercise program was very effective in improving body composition, but changes in the evaluation of body image need long-term exercise. Also, we were concluded that it is very important to consider preference level when evaluating body composition and body image.

The Effect of an Exercise Program on Body Composition and Physical Fitness in Obese Female College Students (운동프로그램이 비만여대생의 신체조성과 체력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was done to analyze the effects of an exercise program on body composition and physical fitness of obese female college students. Method: Data was collected from September 29, 2003 to December, 29, 2003. The research design was arandomized control group pretest-posttest experimental design. The subjects were college nursing students at K University. Forty four students, 20 in the experimental group and 24 ina control group, with more than $30\%$ body fat were randomly assigned. The subjects in the experimental group participated in an exercise program for 12 weeks, sixty minutes per session, five times per week. Body composition and physical fitness was measured by a body composition analyzer, cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength(grip strength, back strength), flexibility, balance, agility(whole body reaction time) and power(standing long jump). Result: Body weight(F=4.76, p=0.035), body fat(kg)(F=5.68, p=0.022) and body mass index(F=5.73, p=0.021) of the experimental group were significantly different from the control group, but there were no significant differences in body fat($\%$), lean body mass, muscle mass and WHR. Back strength(F=6.50, p=0.015), flexibility(F=14.62, p=0.000), muscle endurance(F=7.98, p=0.007), power(F=5.76, p=0.02l) and balance(F=2.46, p=0.018) of the experimental group were significantly different from the control group, but there were no significant differences in cardiovascular endurance, grip strength or agility. Conclusiton: The exercise program was effective in improving body weight, body fat(kg), body mass index, back strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, balance and power of obese female college students.

Effects of an Obesity Control Program Including Rhythmical Dance Exercise for Children with Obesity (비만아동을 위한 율동적 춤 운동을 포함한 비만관리프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of an obesity control program including rhythmical dance exercise, on body composition, knowledge about obesity, life habits and self-esteem among obese elementary school children. This program included obesity related health education and counseling based on behavior modification once a week, 1 hour-rhythmical dance class once a week and 40-minute jump rope classes twice a week for 8 weeks. Method: There were 29 students with obesity in the experimental and 28 in the control group. Participated was voluntary. The data were collected from April 16 to July 6 2007. $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, paired t-test and t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: Students in the experimental group showed significantly lower fat mass (t=-2.16, p=.036) and percent body fat (t=-2.93, p=.005) and significantly higher muscle mass (t=2.05, p=.045) and lean body mass (t=2.71, p=.009) than those in the control group. Knowledge of obesity increased significantly and eating habits changed significantly. But difference in exercise habits and self-esteem were not significant. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that an 8 week-obesity control program including rhythmical dance exercise is effective in decreasing body fat, increasing muscle mass and increasing knowledge of obesity in children who are obese.

Dietary patterns are associated with physical growth among school girls aged 9-11 years

  • The purpose of this study was to identify dietary patterns among Korean elementary school girls based on the change in body mass index (BMI), body fat, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone mineral content (BMC) during 22 months and to explore the characteristics of dietary patterns identified. Girls aged 9-11 years were recruited and 3-day dietary data were collected four times. Subjects with a diet record of 8 or more days and anthropometric data measured at baseline and 22 months later were included (n = 198). Reduced rank regression was utilized to derive dietary patterns using a change in BMI, body fat, and calcaneus BMD and BMC as response variables. Two dietary patterns were identified: the "Egg and Rice" dietary pattern and "Fruit, Nuts, Milk Beverage, Egg, Grain" (FNMBEG) dietary pattern. Subjects who had high score on the FNMBEG pattern consumed various food groups, including fruits, nuts and seeds, and dairy products, whereas subjects in the "Egg and Rice' dietary pattern group did not. Both dietary patterns showed a positive association with change in BMI and body fat. However, subjects who had a higher score on the "Egg and Rice" dietary pattern had less of a BMC increase, whereas subjects who had a higher score on the FMBEG dietary pattern had more increased BMC over 22 months after adjusting for age, body and bone mass, and Tanner stage at baseline. Our results provide evidence that a well-balanced diet contributes to lean body mass growth among young girls.
