Characteristics of methane direct-injection spark-ignition stratified combustion in lean hydrogen mixture were analyzed both in a single cylinder engine and in a constant volume combustion chamber. Combustion pressure and Instantaneous combustion chamber wall temperature during the combustion process were measured with a thin-film thermocouple and used in analyses of combustion and cooling loss. Results in this research show that the premixed hydrogen increases cooling loss to combustion chamber wall while achieving combustion promotion, and the combustion system is effective especially in lean mixture conditions. Analysis of flame propagation was also done with Schlieren photography in the constant volume combustion chamber.
An experimental study of the flame response in a turbulent premixed combustor has been conducted with room temperature, atmospheric pressure inlet conditions using premixed natural gas. The fuel is premixed with the air upstream of a choked inlet to avoid equivalence ratio fluctuations. Therefore the observed flame response is only the result of the imposed velocity fluctuations, which are produced using a variable speed siren. Measurements are made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The results are analyzed to determine the phase and gain of the flame transfer function as a function of the modulation frequency. Of particular interest is the effect of flame structure on the flame response predictions and measurements. The results show that both the gain and the phase of flame transfer function are closely associated with the flame length and structure, which is dependent upon the upstream flow perturbation as well as equivalence ratio in the current study.
This study has numerically modelled the combustion processes of the turbulent swirling premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner (LSB). In these turbulent swirling premixed flames, the four tangentially-injected air jets induce the turbulent swirling flow which plays the crucial role to stabilize the turbulent lifted flame. In the present approach, the turbulence-chemistry interaction is represented by the level-set based flamelet model.. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computations are made for the various swirl numbers and nozzle length. In terms of the centerline velocity profiles and flame liftoff heights, numerical results are compared with experimental data The three-dimensional approach yields the much better conformity with agreements with measurements without any analytic assumptions on the inlet swirl profiles, compared to the two-dimensional approach. Numerical clearly results indicate that the present level-set based flamelet approach has realistically simulated the. structure and stabilization mechanism of the turbulent swirling stoichiometric and lean-premixed lifted flames in the low-swirl burner.

Structure of edge flame established in a mixing layer, formed between two uniformly flowing pure $CH_4$ and pure $O_2$ streams, is numerically investigated by employing a detailed methane-oxidation mechanism. The numerical results exhibited the most outstanding distinction of using pure oxygen in the fuel-rich premixed-flame front, through which the carbon-containing compound is found to leak mainly in the form of CO instead of HC compounds, contrary to the rich $CH_4-air$ premixed flames in which $CH_4$ as well as $C_2H_m$ leakage can occur. Moreover, while passing through the rich premixed flame, a major route for CO production, in addition to the direct $CH_4$ decomposition, is found to be $C_2H_m$ compound formation followed by their decomposition into CO. Beyond the rich premixed flame front, CO is further oxidized into $CO_2$ in a broad diffusion-flame-like reaction zone located around moderately fuel-rich side of the stoichiometric mixture by the OH radical from the fuel-lean premixed-flame front. Since the secondary CO production through $C_2H_m$ decomposition has a relatively strong reaction intensity, an additional heat-release branch appears and the resulting heat-release profile can no longer be seen as a tribrachial structure.

The effects of strain rate and preferential diffusion of $H_2$ on flame extinction are numerically studied in interacting premixed syngas-air flames with fuel compositions of 50% $H_2$ + 50% CO and 30% $H_2$ + 70% CO. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations at flame extinction as a function of strain rate are examined. Increasing strain rate reduces the boundaries of both flammable lean and rich fuel concentrations and produces a flammable island and subsequently even a point, implying that there exists a limit strain rate over which interacting flame cannot be sustained anymore. Even if effective Lewis numbers are slightly larger than unity on extinction boundaries, the shape of the lean extinction boundary is slanted even at low strain rate, i.e. $a_g=30s^{-1}$ and is more slanted in further increase of strain rate, implying that flame interaction on lean extinction boundary is strong and thus hydrogen (as a deficient reactant) Lewis number much less than unity plays an important role of flame interaction. It is also shown that effects of preferential diffusion of $H_2$ cause flame interaction to be stronger on lean extinction boundaries and weaker on rich extinction boundaries. Detailed analyses are made through the comparison between flame structures with and without the restriction of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H in symmetric and asymmetric fuel compositions. The reduction of flammable fuel compositions in increase of strain rate suggests that the mechanism of flame extinction is significant conductive heat loss from the stronger flame to ambience.
Fuel processing systems which convert fuel into rich gas (such as stream reforming, partial oxidation, autothermal reforming) need high temperature environment ($600{\sim}1,000^{\circ}$). Generally, anode-off gas or mixture of anode-off gas and LNG is used as input gas of fuel reformer. In order to make efficient and low emission burner system for fuel reformer, it is necessary to elucidate the combustion and emission characteristic of fuel reformer burner. The purpose of this study is to develop a porous premixed flat ceramic burner that can be used for 1~5 kW fuel cell reformer. Ceramic burner experiments using natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas, mixture of natural gas & anode off gas were carried out respectively to investigate the flame characteristics by heating capacity and equivalence ratio. Results show that the stable flat flames can be established for natural gas, hydrogen gas, anode off gas and mixture of natural gas & anode off gas as reformer fuel in the porous ceramic burner. For all of fuels, their burning velocities become smaller as the equivalence ratio goes to the lean mixture ratio, and a lift-off occurs at lean limit. Flame length in hydrogen and anode off gas became longer with increasing the heat capacity. In particular, the blue surface flame is found to be very stable at a very lean equivalence ratio at heat capacity and different fuels. The exhausted NOx and CO measurement shows that the blue surface flame represents the lowest NOx and CO emissions since it remains very stable at a lean equivalence ratio.
In order to reduce NOx emissions in the 20kW class microturbine under development, the low NOx characteristics, as being an application to the lean premixed combustion technology, have been investigated. The study has been conducted at the conditions of high temperature and high pressure. Theair from a compressor with the pressure of 2.5bar, 3.0bar, 3.5bar was supplied to the combustor with the temperature 560K through the air preheat-treatment. The sampling exhaust gas was measured at the immediate exit of the combustor. For the effect of temperature on NO and CO emissions, though NOx were increased, CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. With increasing inlet air pressure, NOx were increased and CO was decreased also. NOx were decreased, but CO was increased with increasing inlet air mass flow rate. The test has been performed on the equivalent ratio of 0.10 to 0.16 in the lean region. NOx were increased with increasing equivalent ratio, but CO was decreased as an influence of flame temperature. CFD work with an appropriate combustion model predicated a complicated swirling flow pattern in the combustor, and also produced a numerical value of NOx and CO emissions which was to be compared with the experimental one. As the results of this study, NOx are expected to be reduced to less than 42ppm at 15% O2 when operated at the design condition of the 20kW class microturbine.
When a circular cylinder is placed at the center of a slot burner nozzle, once stable Woflhard-Parker type laminar lean premixed flame is changed to an oscillating flame with self-induced noise. The wrinkled flame surface showed the same pattern and frequency of the Karman vortex street at the downstream of a circular cylinder. The interaction of flame with Karman vortex street is observed to be responsible for flame oscillation. The measured flame oscillation frequency is very similar to the estimated Karman vortex shedding frequency based on the St-Re relationship of the flow past circular cylinder, which could be considered as a strong evidence for the interaction between laminar pre-mixed flame and a Karman vortex street. As Reynolds number increases oscillation frequency decreases and the self-induced noise level increases as well as the flame front is more severly wrinkled. This result suggests that the flame/vortex interaction becomes more active at higher Re.
