Many researches on natural gas engines, with lean mixtures are being conducted for the purpose of preservation of global environment. Lean combustion is one of the most promising method for increasing engine efficiency and reducing the emission from SI engines. Due to the possibility of partial burn and misfire, however, under lean burn operation, stable flame kernel formation and fast burn rate, by use of swirl or tumble flow, are needed to guarantee a successful subsequent combustion. Experimental data were obtained on a 4-stroke, natural gas fueled SI engine to investigate the effect of compression ratio, swirl and spark plug electrode rotation on efficiency and emission under lean burn condition. Experimental results have displayed that higher compression ratio, presence of swirl vane and favorable direction of electrode gap brougth about the improvements in engine efficiency and its operational stability.

Fuel lean reburning method is very attractive way in comparison with conventional reburning method for reducing NOX. Meanwhile, the knowledge of the how flue gas re-circulated, temperature distribution and species concentration is crucial for the design and operation of an effective fuel lean reburning system. For this reason, numerical analysis of fuel lean reburning system is a very important and challenge task. In this work, the effect of fuel lean reburn system on NOX reduction has been experimentally and numerically conducted. Experimental study has been conducted with a 15kW lab scale furnace. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used as main fuel and reburn fuel. To carry out numerical study, the finite-volume based commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT6.3 was used to simulate the reacting flow in a given laboratory furnace. Steady state, three dimensional analysis performed for turbulent reactive flow and radiative heat transfer in the furnace.

The present study was investigated combustion characteristics of methane-air mixtures at stratified charge in a constant volume combustion chamber. The results indicated that even the vety lean mixture, which is normally not flammable in single chamber type, could be burned within. a comparatively short time by using sub-chamber with stratified charge method. And the lean inflammability limit of mixture in a main chamber was about ($\phi_m$cr=O.46, when the equivalence ratio of a sub-chamber was $\phi_s$= 1.0. Initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were decreased and maximum combustion pressure. was increased as the equivalence ratio of both sub and main chamber approached unity. Specifically, initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were greatly affected rather by. the equivalence ratio of sub-chamber than that of main chamber. The maximum combustion pressure was little affected if the total equivalence ratio lies in the same range.

The spray characteristics of air-assisted fuel injection and its effects on the engine combustion was investigated in this study. The atomization characteristics of a Bosch fuel injector inserted into the air-assist adapter were measured using particle motion analysis system. Droplet size decreased with air supplied and fine spray with below $60\mu\textrm{m}$ of SMD was acquired under the conditions of air-assist pressure over 0.5bar. The lean combustion performance of a 1.8L DOHC engine equipped with air-assist adapters was tested on the dynamometer. When the assistant air pressure is 1.0bar, lean limit recorded the highest value, and CO, HC emissions were decreased at the pressure over 1.0bar.
A numerical analysis of a lean premixed combustor in a micro gas turbine was carried out to investigate the correlation between the turbulent mixing and emission characteristics on the combustor geometries. The interaction between the burners, by flow direction and momentum, significantly influenced on the turbulent mixing and combustion characteristics. The vortex which was generated by thermal expansion was observed during the combustion process, this was distinguished from the combustor geometries. The results showed that these characteristics can affect the NOx emission.

We studied the effects on the ignitability of mixture, the combustion duration, and the maximum combustion pressure, of various initial combustion factors such as temperature, pressure, and each equivalence ratio in order to identify the combustion characteristics of lean mixture and improve ignitability through the proper control of the ignition energy. It is concluded that there is an optimum turbulent intensity that enables the combustion to have the best ignitability and the shortest duration under each equivalent ratio, and the combustion duration is only dependent upon the distribution and magnitude of discharge energy within the limit of inflammability.
The objective of this paper is to characterize dynamic pressure traces measured at self-excited combustion instabilities occurring in two combustion systems of different hardware. One system is a model lean premixed gas turbine combustor and the other a fullscale bipropellant liquid rocket thrust chamber. It is commonly observed in both systems that low frequency waves at around 300㎐ are first excited at the onset of combustion instabilities and after a short duration, the instability mode becomes coupled to the resonant acoustic modes of the combustion chamber, the first longitudinal mode for the lean premixed combustor and the first tangential mode for the rocket thrust chamber. Low frequency waves seem to get excited at first since flame shows the higher heat release response on the lower frequency perturbations with the smaller phase differences between heat release and pressure fluctuations. Nonlinear time series analysis of pressure traces reveals that even stable combustion might have chaotic behavior with the positive maximum Lyapunov exponent. Also, pressure fluctuations under combustion instabilities reach a limit cycle or quasi-periodic oscillations at the very similar run conditions, which manifest that a self-excited high frequency instability has strong nonlinear characteristics.
The concept of lean-premixed combustion in gas turbine combustor operation has become a standard in recent years as an effective means to meet stringent enviromental standards on NOx emissions. The combustion characteristics of 75 kW class lean premixed combustor were investigated at the conditions of high temperature and ambient pressure. The exit temperature and emissions of CO and NOx were measured at the center of exit plane. The high temperature air of $550K{\sim}650K$ was supplied through air preheater. As expected, experimental results indicate that NOx emission was increased and CO emission was decreased by increasing inlet air temperature. But CO emission measured at the center of exit plane was increased because of the non-uniform radial direction profiles. The Semi-Empirical Correlation method was applied to obtain the design point emissions of NOx and CO. Also the flame temperature, CO and NOx emissions were measured along the centerline of liner at 650K inlet air temperature to determine the position of dilution holes.
The performance characteristics of lean burn system in gasoline engine are mainly affected by the air-fuel mixture in cylinder, gas exchange process of manifold system, exhaust emission of engine, and the electronic engine control system. In order to obtain the effect of performance factors on the optimum conditions of lean burn engine, this study deal with the behavior of mixture formation, gas flow characteristics of air, flow and evaporation analysis of spray droplet in cylinder, vaporization and burning characteristics of lean mixture in the engine, and the control performance of electronic engine control system. The optimum flow conditions were investigated with the swirl and tumble flows in the combustion chamber with swirl control valve. The performance characteristics and optimum condition of flow field in intake system were analyzed by the investigation of inlet flow of air and combustion stabilization on cylinder.

For the purpose of obtaining a fundamental data which is needed to develope the port injection type charged LPLi engine system, we manufactured intake port injection system of liquid charging LPG and modified heavy duty single cylinder LPLi engine from heavy duty diesel engine. Engine output and emission characteristics were analyzed under variable air/fuel ratio and charging pressure. Since LPG is consisted of propane and butane, we investigated combustion characteristics using this two kinds of fuel. From the result of charging engine performance test, engine torque increase about 30% ∼ 40% with 0.3bar charging pressure. In low speed condition, as charging pressure increase, combustion stability improve ill lean bum condition, but, in high speed condition, combustion stability make worse in lean bum condition. We know that engine output decreased rapidly from the condition of air excess ratio 1.3. In addition, we measured emission characteristics under the lean bum and charging condition. From this experiment, we found that CO emission is out of the question in the range from stiochiometric to lean burn and charging condition, but charging pressure has influence on HC emission.
