The pig slurry leachate was dark brown-colored solution that leaches out of woodchip trickling filter. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of pig slurry leachate and byproduct on growth characteristics of leaf lettuce in hydroponics culture. The effects of addition of fish meal, bone meal and crab shell for the growth of leaf lettuce were investigated. Leaf lettuce were grown in each of six combination treatment solutions; slurry leachate, slurry leachate + fish meal, slurry leachate+bone meal, slurry leachate + crab shell and chemical hydroponic solution for lettuce based on EC content. The chemical nutrient solution was the solution of National Horticulture Research Station for the growth of lettuce. The all of nutrient solution was adjusted 1.5 mS/cm in EC in hydroponics culture. 1. The pH level of leachate of trickling filter was increased and EC decreased gradually during treatment. Pig slurry leachate was low in suspended solids (SS), phosphorus (P), but rich in potassium (K). 2. The plot of slurry leachate (SL) was lowest in the growth characteristics of lettuce. The leaf length and width of lettuce treated with mixture plot of slurry leachate and fish meal (SL + FM) was higher compared with plot in slurry leachate. The chlorophyll reading was reduced in plot treated with slurry leachate, but that in plot of SL+FM was similar compared with control plot. 3. The fresh weight of lettuce showed lowest in the plot treated with slurry leachate. The addition of fish meal increased the yield of comparing plot of slurry leachate, but plots of bone meal and crab shell addition were not significantly difference. The fresh weight of leaf lettuce in plot of SL+FM was 87% as 400.0g compared with control. In conclusion, the mixture solution of pig slurry leachate and fish meal could be used as a nutrition solution of organic lettuce hydroponics.
To get basic data for the utilization of white and red lotus as a raw material in functional food, chemical components of its leaf and root were investigated. Leaf had the highest level of nitrogen free extract and root had the highest level of moisture. The mineral analysis showed K(380.44~1,516.34 mg/100g), Ca(36.67~1,323.92 mg/100g), P(84.02~473.13 mg/100g) and Na(57.73~304.07 mg/100g). The rich free sugars in white and red lotus were glucose(161.12~765.15 mg/100g) and frutose (100.57~901.12 mg/100g). Total amino acid contents in leaf and root of white lotus and leaf and root of red lotus were 6,385.57, 1,162.93, 6,003.01 and 1,242.20 mg/100g, respectively. Although the free amino acid compositions of white and red lotus were different, their major free amino acids were glutamic acid, phenylalanine arginine and tyrosine. The ascorbic acid were 248.65 and 20.99 mg/100g in leaf and root of white lotus, 156.92 and 9.32 mg/100g in leaf and root of red lotus. The leaf of white lotus exhibited the highest total phenolic contents at 24.33 mg/g.

Several methods for determining the response of corn to glyphosate were investigated to provide a fast and reliable method for identifying glyphosate-resistant corn in vivo. Two bioassays were developed. One assay is named 'whole plant / leaf growth assay', in which the herbicide glyphosate is applied on the upper part of 3rd leaf and the growth of herbicide-untreated 4th leaf is measured at 3 day after treatment. in this assay, the leaf growth of conventional corn was inhibited in a dose dependent from 50 to $1600{\mu}g/mL$ of glyphosate and growth inhibition at $1600{\mu}g/mL$ was 55% of untreated control. The assay has the potential to be used especially in the case that the primary cause of glyphosate resistance is related with a reduction of the herbicide translocation. Another assay is named 'leaf segment / shikimate accumulation assay', in which the four excised leaf segments ($4{\times}4mm$) are placed in each well of a 48-well microtiter plate containing $200{\mu}L$ test solution and the amount of shikimate is determined after incubation for 24 h in continuous light at $25^{\circ}C$. In this assay, 0.33% sucrose added to basic test solution enhanced a shikimate accumulation by 3 to 4 times and the shikimate accumulation was linearly occurred from 2 to $8{\mu}g/mL$ of glyphosate, showing an improved response to the method described by Shaner et al. (2005). The leaf segment / shikimate accumulation assay is simple and robust and has the potential to be used as a high throughput assay in the case that the primary cause of glyphosate resistance is related with EPSPS, target site of the herbicide. Taken together, these two assays would be highly useful to initially select the lines obtained after transformation, to investigate the migration of glyphosate-resistant gene into other weeds and to detect a weedy glyphosate-resistant corn in field.
The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal mixing ratio of hot-air dried loquat leaf powder and optimum conditions for making Jeolpyun containing hot-air dried loquat leaf powder (LLP). Samples of Jeolpyun were prepared with different contents of hot-air dried LLP (0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) followed by analysis of chemical properties, moisture contents, color, mechanical quality characteristics, amylograph, and sensory tests. Chemical analysis showed that hot-air dried LLP consisted of 11.41% water, 8.34% crude protein, 1.90% crude fat, 7.74% crude ash, and 16.95% crude fiber, with $^{\circ}Brix$ of 2.07, and pH of 5.78. Moisture contents of samples ranged from 52.22 to 50.06%. L-value decreased with addition of hot-air dried LLP, whereas a-value increased with increasing amount of hot-air dried LLP, and no significant differences were observed regarding b-value. In the mechanical evaluation of physical properties, hardness deceased with increasing amount of hot-air dried LLP. The starting temperature amylograph of Jeolpyun was higher in samples with hot-air dried LLP than those without hot-air dried LLP. Set back was slower with increasing amount of hot-air dried LLP, an increasing amount of hot-air dried LLP made set back of Jeolpyun slower. In the sensory test, Jeolpyun with 6% hot-air dried LLP was the most preferred with less bitterness and proper softness, moisture and chewiness. Therefore, addition of 6% hot-air dried LLP to Jeolpyun made with rice flour showed the best overall preference. Based on the results of this experiment, samples with hot-air dried LLP showed slower hardening than those without hot-air dried LLP in textural changes during storage, and Jeolpyun with 6% hot-air dried LLP is expected to increase quality and preference of Jeolpyun.
This research is to establish the basic data of the nutritive value and improve our diet. In the part of the leaf and stem of the wild and cultivated horned rampion (Phyteuma japonicum Mig), the components such as chemical compositon, vitamin C, free sugar, mineral, nucleotide and its related compounds, composition and free amino acid were analyzed one after another. Content of the crude lipids and proteins was determined much higher in its wildness than in its cultivated horned rampion; while, that of carbohydrates was higher in the former than in the latter. The content of vitamin C was retained higher in the leaf than in the stem horned rampion. And the content of calcium among the detected minerals was outstanding in all of the samples collected, and potassium and magnesium was the next ones in its order. The main components of free sugars in both the wild and cultivated horned rampion were glucose and fructose, and their content was higher in the stem than in the leaf. Nucleotide and its related compounds were identified with 5 kinds of nucieotides such as CMP, UMP, IMP, AMP and hypoxanthine (Hx), and the content of Hx and AMP was the highest I the wild and cultivated samples, respectively. In the composition amino acid of the wild horned rampion, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and phenylalanine was outstandingly abundant; while, such amino acid as methinone and proline was small and besides cysteine couldn't be detected in the stem. Total amounts of composition amino acid in the leaf was 2118.0 and 1120.1mg% in the wild and cultivated sample, respectively. In the free amino acid of horned rampion, the total amount ranged from 8.5 to 50.1mg.%, which were lower level than that of composition amino acid. But the number of free amino acid was 29 kinds, which was bigger in its number than that of composition amino acid detected 17 kinds.
In order to elucidate the effect of spreader-stickers on the rainfastness of dithianon and chlorothalonil wettable powders, and to estimate the possibility of suggesting good new formulations, the fungicide residues on the leaf surface of hot pepper was assessed and compared after the drop-wise applications of fungicide suspensions containing spreader-sticker on leaf surface followed by artificial raining. Three commercial spreader-stickers, which were Cover, Reitron and Silwet, not only made the rainfastness of dithianon wettable powders worse on hot pepper leaf, but increasing their concentrations also accelerated it further. On the other hand, to chlorothalonil wettable powder, Reitron showed the 3-fold improvement of rainfastness. But, for the rest, there was no improvement as well. The effect of N-octylpyrrolidone (NOP) on rainfastness of both fungicides was excellent. Soybean oil formulations containing leaf-penetrable nonionic surfactant, which was either polyoxyethylene monotridecyl ether or polyoxyethylene monolauryl ether, improved dithianon rainfastness, but the ones containing conventional emulsifiers did not.
X-ray irradiation with convergent chemicals such as nano-silver particles or sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) has been used to control leaf blight on cut lilies. The oriental hybrid lily cultivars Siberia, Le Reve, and Sorbonne were irradiated five times by 200 Gy of X-rays in 2014. In 2015, Siberia and Sorbonne were irradiated three times by 150 Gy of X-rays. After artificial infection with Botrytis elliptica on the leaves and petals of cut lilies, this study used convergent chemical X-ray irradiation of 200 Gy or 150 Gy. Leaf and petal blight was measured in terms of incidence and severity at 8 days after infection using total 552 cuttings. Results indicate that the treatments of X-ray irradiation and NaDCC in 2014 and 2015 slightly decreased the severity of petal blight on Siberia and Sorbonne. However, the results were not significant and severity did not decrease as NaDCC concentration increased. Vase-life was observed separately after X-ray irradiation of 270 cut lilies in 2014 and 108 cut lilies in 2015. Chlorophyll content was not affected by either 200 Gy or 150 Gy of X-rays. The number of days of fully opened flowers at Siberia of 150 Gy and Le Revu of 200 Gy increased by 1-2 days. In addition, the relative fresh weights of the X-rayed flowers were 10% drier than the non-irradiated controls. Overall, leaf blight control by X-ray was inferior to the control by gamma rays, and petal color was bleached in Sorbonne and Le Reve cvs. by 150 Gy of X-rays.

In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, a Kenaf was cultured on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national University under the seven levels of nitrogen rates(0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from April 25 to Dec. 25, 1999. The plant height increased by increase of nitrogen rate, showing longest 250kg/ha with 286.6cm and shortest at no application plot with 255.7cm. The difference on leaf number, leaf withering number, stem diameter and branches number by nitrogen rate showed a similar tendency to the plant height. Increasing N rate from 0 to 250kg/ha fresh forage yield form 55.8 to 99.8MT/ha, dry matter (DM) yield from 8.8 to 15.8MT/ha, crude protein(CP) yield form 1.2 to 3.1MT/ha, total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield from 3.8 to 8.6MT/ha. However, no significant differences in these yields were found between 200 and 250kg N/ha. Nitrogen uptake increased form 192.9 to 496.2 kg/ha but N use efficiency decreased form 95.0 to 66.6 kg DM$^{a}$ /kg N with increasing from 0 to 250 kg/ha. As N rate increased from 0 to 250kg/ha, leaf and stem out of CP, crude fat (CF), nitrogen free extract (NFE), TDN contents increased from 20.1% to 25.8% and from 9.7% to 12.4%, from 5.6% to 8.1% and from 3.3% to 4.4%, from 36.1% to 40.2% and from 21.9% to 32.4%, from 59.3% to 75.0% and from 32.2% to 38.2%, respectively, while leaf and stem out of crude fiber decreased from 18.5% to 16.7% and from 51.5% to 39.3%. Based on the these findings, the optimum N rate for forage production of kenaf seems to be about 200 kg/ha in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of jeju island.
The present study evaluated the variations in soil microbial population of controlled horticultural land used for lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivation by their fatty acid methyl ester and chemical properties. We utilized four treatment groups, no treatment (NT), culture medium (CM), Bacillus subtilis S37-2 (KACC 91281P) ${\times}10^6CFU\;mL^{-1}$ (BS1), and Bacillus subtilis $S37-2{\times}10^7CFU\;mL^{-1}$ (BS2) and analyzed these variations throughout the before treatment and harvesting stage. The chemical properties such as pH, organic matter, available phosphate, and electrical conductivity in soils before treatment and harvesting stage showed no significant difference among the treatments. Total numbers of bacteria and microbial biomass C in soil treated with BS1 were larger than those of NT, CM, and BS2, whereas total number of fungi at the harvesting stage was significantly lower in the BS1 soil than in the NT and CM soils (P < 0.05). On basis of leaf length, leaf width, leaf number and leaf weight, the growth characteristics lettuce on the soil treated with BS1 and BS2 was faster than those of NT and CM soils. Yield of lettuce with treated BS1 and BS2 were 35% and 29% more than that of NT, respectively.

This study was carried out to evaluate growth, morphological characteristics, and sugar content among fifty six blackberry (Rubus fructicosus) genotypes derived from gamma-ray treatment (fifty two lines), MNU treatments (three lines), and cross breed R. fructicosus${\times}$R. parvifolius(one line). While 56 genotypes had similar stem diameter with origin variety, the most of mutants showed reduced leaf size. Also, they showed a wide range of variation in fruit size and one hundred fruit weight compared with origin variety. In fruit size and sugar content, two mutant lines showed large fruit sizes and ten mutant lines showed 20% higher sugar content than the original variety. In the correlation analysis, positive relationships were determined between sugar content and stem diameter, fruit length, leaf wide and fruit length/fruit wide ratio. However, leaf length/leaf wide ratio showed a negative correlation with sugar content. The results will be used as fundamental data for Rubus fructicosus breeding program.
