The inter-relationship and combining abilities of characters for leaf length, leaf width, branch number, leaf number, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight were studied in the F1 combination of 15 crosses from the partial six-parent diallel cross in Petunia hybrida. The leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight showed high positive correlation together with the other growth characters such as leaf length, leaf width, branch number, leaf number. The mean squares of general combining ability(GCA) and specific combining ability(SCA) were highly significant for all the growth characters. The estimates of variance components of SCA were greater than those of GCA for all the characters, showing preponderance of non-additive gene actions for these characters. GCA effect was high in the lines of D and G for leaf length and fresh weight, and in the lines of C and D for branch number, leaf number, leaf area and fresh weight. The crosses of D×E, D×G, and E×G exhibited high SCA effect for all the growth characters such as leaf length, leaf width, branch number, leaf number, leaf area, fresh weight, and dry weight. The broad sense heritability was generally high compared to narrow sense one in the 7 characters. The highest heritability of the broad and narrow sense was shown in the leaf width and dry weight.
In this study, we investigated antimutagenic and anticancer activities of leaf mustard (LM, Brassica juncea) and leaf mustard kimchi (LMK) during their fermentation period. Methanol extracts were prepared from raw mustard, brined leaf mustard in 10% Gueun salt solution for 2 hrs, leaf mustard fermented at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 5 days after brined in 10% Guenun salt solution for 2 hrs (Fr-LM), fresh leaf mustard kimchi (Fresh-LMK) and optimally ripened leaf mustard kimchi fermented at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 30 days (OR-LMK). OR-LMK showed the strongest inhibitory activities against the mutagenicities induced by aflatoxin B1 in Salmonella Typhimurium TA100. LMs and LMKs inhibited the survival or growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells and HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells in MTT assay and growth inhibition test. Among the extracts, OR-LMK and FR-LM exhibited strong antiproliferative effect against cancer cells, especially HT-29 cells. DAPI staining assay showed that OR-LMK induced apoptosis cell death of HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that leaf mustards and leaf mustard kimchi have chemopreventive activities.
This experiment was conducted to investigate effects of fertilizers on leaf surface lipid(LSL) , and relationship between growth characteristics and LSL of aromatic tobacco, cv. Sohyang, grown in pots with 3 rates of N, P and K. With increasing the amount of applied nitrogen from 3 to 6kg110a, the contents of LSL per plant and per leaf area were decreased For maximum LSL Per plant and per leaf area nitrogen of 3kg/10a was required ,There were lit tie affected by P and K. Leaf weight per plant and mean leaf area were correlated significantly and positively with LSL per plant, but thickness of largest leaf negatively. Specific leaf weight and leaf dry weight /leaf fresh weight ratio were correlated significantly and positively with LSL per leaf area, but mean leaf area negatively.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants have been reported to be autotoxic as well as allelopathic. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments through petri-dish and pot test were conducted to determine autotoxic effects of alfalfa leaf and soil extracts on the germination or early seedling growth of alfalfa, and to evaluate allelopathic effects of alfalfa leaf residues on alfalfa, barnyard grass, com, eclipta and soybean. Alfalfa seed germination was delayed depending on aqueous extract concentration, with no difference in final germination after 48 hours. Alfalfa root length was more sensitive to the autotoxic chemicals from leaf extracts than was germination or shoot length. Root growth of alfalfa was significantly inhibited at extract concentration of more than 1 g dry tissue/L (g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$). Hypocotyl growth, however, was not affected by all the concentrations of leaf extracts. Soil extracts from 4-yr-old alfalfa stand significantly reduced alfalfa root length by 66%, while soil extracts from 0,1, and 3yr-old stand stimulated root length up to 14-32% over the control. Residue incorporation with dry matters of alfalfa leaf at 100 g $\textrm{kg}^{-1}$ reduced seedling length of several crop and weed species, ranging from 53 to 87% inhibition. Addition of nutrient solution into alfalfa leaf extracts alleviated alfalfa autotoxic effect. This result indicates alfalfa leaf and soil extracts or residues could exert autotoxic as well as allelopathic substances into soil environments during and after establishment.
This study was conducted to obtain the breeding Information for varietal difference of leaf breakdown of flue-cured tobacco at Taegu Experiment Station, Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute In 1988. The experiment was designed in randomized block with 3 replications. And data were analyzed as spilt plot design composed with varieties for main and growth stages for sub-plots. Among the 8 varieties (NC 95, SL 72, Sleight G-28, TC 518, NC82, NC 2326, NC 567 and TC 499), first half derived from NC 95, and 4 latter varieties were used for check Plants and not derived from NC 95. Plant seedlings were transplanted in 15 April. The number of breakdown leaf were investigated twice at peak growth stage, 5 June and at early harvest stage, 30 June. NC 95 and varieties derived from NC 95 had showed significantly different on the number of breakdown leaf compared to the latter 4 ones after heavy rainfall, but there were not significantly different at the two growth stages. It was suggested that NC95 and varieties derived from NC 95 had substance to induce leaf breakdown by conditional genes after water absorption to plant tissue. Among the varieties derived from NC 95 cultivar SC 72, Speight G-28 and TC 518 had appeared significantly different on the number of breakdown leaf, respectively. These results could appreciated analogically that character of leaf breakdown were governed by heteromeric genes In NC 95.
The effect of potassium metabolism on the soybean leaves was studied with comparison of other elements during the successive growing period. The results were as follows; 1. The percentage of potassium content showed remarkable increase not only in the first compound leaf at a stage which was growing vigorously and producing new leaves, but also in the fifth compound leaf at a stage which was taking a active metabolism of nitrogen and carbohydrate but not producing new leaves. However, the percentage of potassium content was decreased in the second compound leaf than in the first one. Such a result could be regarded as a potassium removal from mature leaves into immature and flowing out from stoma through respiration. During the pod-development the percentage of potassium content in the soybean leaf was decreased. 2. If nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were added excessively in the nutrient solution, the percentage of potassium content in the soybean leaf had increased. The effects of these elements showed a remakable increase in the excessive plot of nitrogen than in that of phosphorus. At early stage the redtarded effect of phosphorus on the growth of soybean could be covered by potassium, however, at late stage it could not. The growth of soybean plant was much more inhibited by potassium, compared with nitrogen and phosphorus. New leaves could not be produced in the potassium deficient soybean plant after the third compound leaf. The normal growth of soybean plant could not be observed if only one element was excessively added to the culture solution, compared with the deficiency of other two elements.
The morphology of the leaves and the flowers of angiosperms exhibit remarkable diversity. One of the factors showing the greatest variability of leaf organs is the leaf index, namely, the ratio of leaf length to leaf width. In some cases, different varieties of a single species or closely related species can be distinguished by differences in leaf index. To some extent, the leaf index reflects the morphological adaptation of leaves to a particular environment. In addition, the growth of leaf organs is dependent on the extent of the expansion of leaf cells and on cell proliferation in the cellular level. The rates of the division and enlargement of leaf cells at each stage contribute to the final shape of the leaf, and play important roles throughout leaf development. Thus, the control of leaf shape is related to the control of the shape of cells and the size of cells within the leaf. The shape of flower also reflects the shape of leaf, since floral organs are thought to be a derivative of leaf organs. No good tools have been available for studies of the mechanisms that underlie such biodiversity. However, we have recently obtained some information about molecular mechanisms of leaf morphogenesis as a result of studies of leaves of the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. For example, the ANGUSTIFOLIA (AN) gene, a homolog of animal CtBP genes, controls leaf width. AN appears to regulate the polar elongation of leaf cells via control of the arrangement of cortical microtubules. By contrast, the ROTUNDIFOLIA3 (ROT3) gene controls leaf length via the biosynthesis of steroid(s). We provide here an overview of the biodiversity exhibited by the leaf index of angiosperms. Taken together, we can discuss on the possibility of the control of the shapes and size of plant organs by transgenic approaches with the results from basic researches. For example, transgenic plants that overexpressed a wildtype ROT3 gene had longer leaves than parent plants, without any changes in leaf width. Thus, The genes for leaf growth and development, such as ROT3 gene, should be useful tools for the biodesign of plant organs.

This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of mulching materials on the growth of Chinese chive (Allium tuberusum Rottler) and weed control. Chinese chive was grown under five mulching materials, pine leaf, oak leaf, rice straw, rice hull and sawdust, at the Experimental Farm of Chungbuk National University from June 20, 2009 to September 30, 2009. Amaranthus mangostunus, Digitaria sanguinalis, Portuclaca. oleracea, Echinochioa crus-galli var. frumetacea and Setaria viridis were dominant weeds. Both pine and oak leaves were significantly effective mulching materials in terms of weed control indices in both nursery and field. Soil moisture contents were 1.2~3.7% higher in mulching, especially in oak leaf mulching. Mulching with pine leaf significantly increased plant height, sheath length, leaf length, bulb-, root- and leaf-weights and yield of Chinese chive, but there were no significant differences among the other mulching materials although better than those in non-mulching.

Purpose: This study was carried out to predict the growth period and fresh weight of sprouts grown in a cultivator designed to grow sprouts under optimal conditions. Methods: The temperature, light intensity, and amount of irrigation were controlled, and images of seed sprouts were acquired to predict the days of growth and weight from pixel counts of leaf area. Broccoli, clover, and radish sprouts were selected, and each sprout was cultivated in a 90-mm-diameter Petri dish under the same cultivating conditions. An image of each sprout was taken every 24 hours from the 4th day, and the whole cultivating period was 6 days, including 3 days in the dark. Images were processed by histogram inspection, binary images, image erosion, image dilation, and the overlay image process. The RGB range and ratio of leaves were adjusted to calculate the pixel counts for leaf area. Results: The correlation coefficients between the pixel count of leaf area and the growth period of sprouts were 0.91, 0.98, and 0.97 for broccoli, clover, and radish, respectively. Further, the correlation coefficients between the pixel count of leaf area and fresh weight were 0.90 for broccoli, 0.87 for clover, and 0.95 for radish. Conclusions: On the basis of these results, we suggest that the simple image acquisition system and processing algorithm can feasibly estimate the growth period and fresh weight of seed sprouts.
