This research was attempted to prove suppressing effect of medicinal plants on the intestinal absorption of toxic heavy metals. In vitro study was performed by membrane filtration considering intestinal absorption conditions. From drinking water contaminated singly with 10 and 50 times level of water quality standard for heavy metals, the removal ratio of lead was $40{\sim}60%$ by Chicorium intybus, Angelica acutiloba and Ganoderma lucidium. And the removal ratio of cadmium was $20{\sim}40%$. The removal ratio of lead contaminated with both was $30{\sim}50%$ by every sample similarly, the removal ratio of cadmium was $10{\sim}30%$. The removal ratio of Angelica acutiloba was more higher than Chicorium intybus and Ganoderma lucidium. Considering the extraction conditions of samples, $70^{\circ}C$, 2 min conditions were higher than $95^{\circ}C$, 10 min conditions, the removal ratios of heavy metals were similar. And the membrane filter permeated the material under 500 mw selectively, so the final filtrate could regard as passive transport in intestinal absorption. In conclusion, this research exhibited that the medicinal plants beverages have a suppressing effect on intestinal absorption of lead and cadmium in drinking water.

Electrical equipments of nuclear power plant are divided into class 1E and non-class 1E. Electrical equipment and systems that are essential to emergency reactor shutdown, containment isolation, reactor core cooling, and containment and reactor heat removal, are classified as class 1E. batteries of nuclear power plant are divided into four channels, which are physically and electrically separate and independent. The battery bank of class 1E DC power system of the nuclear power plant use lead-acid batteries in present. The lead acid battery, which has a high energy density, is the most popular form of energy storage. Kt factor of lead-acid battery is used to determine battery size and it is one of calculatiing coefficient for capacity. this paper analyzes Kt factor of lead-acid battery for the DC power system of nuclear power plant. In addition, correlation between Kt parameter and peukert's exponent of lead-acid battery for nuclear plant are discussed. The analytical results contribute to optimize of determining size Lead-acid battery bank.
Big cities in Japan have serious problems due to the shortage of new reclaimed land for municipal wastes. If harmful heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, copper and etc. are contained in the municipal waste combustion residues, they are not able to fill up according to the environmental law in Japan. In this study, the removal of heavy metals in the fly ash (EP ash) was dealt with chloridizing vaporization method. EP ash as a non-hazardous materials is utilized as covering materials, road bed, and building materials.
Unintentional foreign body ingestion is common in children, and coins are the most common foreign body ingested. Foreign body remaining in the esophagus may be associated with mucosal ulceration or esophageal obstruction and can potentially lead to significant morbidity and even death. Removal of esophageal foreign body is therefore generally recommended. Several methods are utilized including esophagoscopy in operating room, flexible endoscopy in out patient setting, fluoroscopic Foley catheter technique, and advancement using bougienage. We report two cases of esophageal foreign body(paduk stone) which were hard to be removed by usual esophagoscopic removal. Successful removal was accomplished with the aid of Fogarty catheter under the general anesthesia.
Hearing loss in the contralateral functioning ear is a rare and distressing complication after vetibular schwannoma removal. Various possible mechanisms have been proposed, however, the etiology of hearing loss is not clear. Fortunately, this is an extremely rare occurrence, sporadic case reports have appeared in the literatures. We report two cases of acute contralateral hearing loss after vestibular schwannoma removal and discuss the possible mechanisms of the phenomenon. Although permanent deafness may result, in our cases, the hearing loss was temporary, returning to near preoperative level within one month. The etiology of hearing loss in one case is thought to be cerebrospinal fluid leakage. However, in the other case, the cause of hearing loss is not clear. A better understanding of these events may lead to preventive measures to avoid contralateral hearing loss after vestibular schwannoma removal.

Airway foreign body aspiration in children can lead to accidental death, due to the foreign body itself or the removal procedure. Depending on its location, removal of the foreign body can be challenging. Here, we present a case of successful removal of a foreign body from the left upper lobar bronchus via ventilating bronchoscopy with a rigid bronchoscope and Fogarty arterial embolectomy catheter. Tracheobronchial foreign bodies in locations that are difficult to reach with forceps, due to an acute angle or the small diameter of the pediatric bronchial tree, can be effectively removed with a Fogarty arterial embolectomy catheter.
The objective of this study is to investigate the removal of heavy metal by using the coprecipitation of barium sulfate. Several parameters governing the efficiency of the coprecipitation method were evaluated by the pH of sample solution, amount of coprecipitant, and addition of sulfide for the removal of As(V), Cd(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) metal ions ($10{\mu}g/ml$ each). The coprecipitation was about 80% - 95% only for lead at low pH but under 10% for other ions. The amount of removal was about 95% - 100% for Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu in the all pH range by the addition of sulfide with barium sulfate but As(V) and Cr(III, VI) ions were not affected by the same conditions.
This study was performed to develop the biological treatment technology of wastewater polluted with heavy metals. The lead-tolerant microorganism, Pseudomonas aeruginosa which possessed the ability to accumulate lead, was isolated from the industrial wastewater polluted with various heavy metals. The characteristics of lead accumulation in the cells and the recovery of the lead there from were investigated. Removal rate of lead from the solution containing 100mg/l of lead by the lead-tolerant microorganism was more than 97% at 48 hours after inoculation with the microorganism. A large number of the electron-dense granules were found mainly on the cell wall and cell membrane fractions, when determined by transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the electron-dense granules were lead complex with the substances binding heavy metals. The lead accumulated into cells was not desorbed by distilled water, but more than 87% of the lead accumulated was desorbed by 0.1M-EDTA. The residues of the cells after combustion at $550^{\circ}C$ amounted to about 30% of the dry weight of the cells. EDS analysis showed that the residues were relatively pure lead compounds containing more than 86% of lead.
Severe and permanent tricuspid regurgitation induced by pacemaker leads is rarely reported in the literature. The mechanism of pacemaker-induced tricuspid regurgitation has been identified, but its management has not been well established. Furthermore, debate still exists regarding the proper surgical approach. We present the case of a patient with severe tricuspid regurgitation induced by a pacemaker lead, accompanied by triple valve disease. The patient underwent double valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair without removal of the pre-existing pacemaker lead. The operation was successful and the surgical procedure is discussed in detail.
A study was carried out in order to investigate the removal efficiencies and removal characteristics of heaw metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu in raw water by one of conventional water treatment processes. The coagulants used in this study were Alum and PAC. Three kinds of water samples were provided: kaolin water, kaolin water mixed with humic acid and raw water from Han River mixed with suspended matter deposited on raw water inlet pipe. Heaw metals were added to the water samples with their respective turbidity, and jar tests were performed. In the results from heaw metal removal studies, lead might be adsorbed or exchanged on the particle surface (SS) rather than react with organic matter added. Cadmium was affected on the dissolved organic matter. Chromium was affected by the both dissolved organic matter and SS concentration, and the restabilization and the enmeshment appeared at moderate (50~80 NTU) and high (100 NTU) turbidity as defined in this experimenL The removal efficiency of copper was relatively little affected by the dissolved organic matter but by SS concentration in comparison with other heavy metals. In these studies as to the raw water turbidities and concentration of heaw metals, it is proved out that the removal efficiency on heaw metals in both cases of PAC and Alum as coagulants was not significantly different.
