  • This study evaluated the apron quality management and shield efficiency in the education laboratory for radiology students. For making a proposal of effective control of lead apron, Eighteen aprons, used in 4 university laboratories of dae-gu, Kyungpook area, were analyzed regarding their uniformities, transmission doses, lead equivalent and shield efficiencies. In conclusion, the lead apron uniformity was generally good. Also, the shield efficiency corresponding to lead equivalent was high. However, the quality control of lead apron was not satisfactory. Since there is a potentially possible chance for students to be exposed to a radiation during practical radiation-training in the education laboratory, the quality-control maintenance of the lead apron should be unceasingly maintained for the radiation protection.

  • Lead apron is harmful to the human body because it is made at heavy metals, and when worn for long periods of time, it causes pain. Therefore, this paper intended to improve the defects of lead apron by using new material shields. For the comparative evaluation of lead and new material shieldes, the shielding rate and weight were measured and tested based on lead 0.5 mmPb. The rate of shielding was 97% based on lead at 0.5 mm thickness, while The new material shield T3 showed similar shielding rates as lead in 8 layers, and in T2 these values were measured in 11 layers. In addition, similar shielding rate was measured in 12 layers at B2, and 8 layers in BF, and 4 layers in $BF_2$. Comparing the weight of cases when commercialized with apron, T3, T2 and B2 were heavier than lead apron. But BF, $BF_2$ were lighter than the lead apron. Based on the results of the experiment, T3 and T2 can be used as an alternative to lead if human or environmental hazards are considered a priority. However, BF and $BF_2$ should be used if the reduction of external exposure is considered a priority.

  • X-ray Chest P-A is very important and basic diagnosis examination for pregnant women. For a pregnancy period pregnant women should be treated very carefully not to be exposed to any radiation which might cause harmful damage to women and babies as well. Lead apron is one of the effective methods to protect pregnant women from the X-ray radiation. However, it is difficult to obtain the accurate position of pregnant women during X-ray Chest P-A since conventional lead apron method forces pregnant women to hold the apron by themselves only to make pregnant women very uncomfortable and hard to maintain accurate position during radiation. As a consequence, it is common to get low quality images of X-ray Chest P-A due to the overlap of apex of lung and scapular. In order to fix this problem, we made new design lead apron that allowed pregnant women to be more comfortable to maintain accurate position during X-ray Chest P-A position. Finally, with this new design lead apron, it was possible to get the best optimized images of X-ray Chest P-A of pregnant women by minimizing overlapping apex of lung and scapular.

  • In this study, we measured the dose reaching the OSLD dosimeter by using the regular lead apron, and air gap apron through 3 experiments, and researched the reductive effect of air gap apron on exposure dose based on the 140 keV gamma ray radiating from $^{99m}technetium$, which is the most commonly used in nuclear medicine. As a result, when the gap between the dosimeter and 0.2mm lead plate is 0 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.515 mSv, and when the gap between the dosimeter and lead plate is 20 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.138 mSv, which shows reductive effect of dose as much as 0.388 mSv. When the gap between the dosimeter and 0.5mm lead plate is 0 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.296 mSv, and when the gap between the dosimeter and lead plate is 20 Cm, the average value of 10 dosimeters was 0.075 mSv, which shows reductive effect of dose as much as 0.221 mSv. As we check the cumulative dosage for 3 days, the lead apron without air layer shows average 0.239 mSv, and the air gap apron shows 0.176 mSv, which is actually reduced by 0.062 mSv. As we check the cumulative dosage for a month, the lead apron without air layer shows 0.59 mSv, and the air gap apron shows 0.54 mSv, which is reduced by 0.05 mSv.

  • In this work, we characterized the shieldability and lightweight of radiation protective aprons which were consisted of various metal(Pb, Sn, Ni, Ti and Cu) by measuring the x-ray dose transmitted through the filters. The transmitted ratio and lead equivalent of various metal were obtained by linear interpolation and the lead equivalent of double layered filters contained Pb layer was determined. The transmitted ratio of the apron(0.25 mmPb) specified in KS B 0845 was 5.2%. The transmitted ratio of the filters at the thickness of 0.6 mm was decreased in the other of Ni(32.60%), Ti(17.75%), Cu(13.25%) and Sn(3.84%). From the results of experimental evaluation for combined filter of Pb and Sn, it was founded that in the case of the first Sn layer, the lead equivalent was higher than that of the first Pb layer. The lead equivalent corresponding to apron of 0.25 mmPb was obtained in the double layered filters of Sn(0.19 mm) - Pb(0.1 mm) and Pb(0.1 mm) - Sn(0.37 mm). Thus, the Sn-Pb filter had the lower weight about 13% than apron of 0.25 mmPb.

  • If protective performance of apron cannot be good, radiation exposure of an guardian or a patient, a person engaged in radiation related industry cannot rise. Therefore, It will be evaluated protection performance to radiation protection aprons by manufacturers and lead equivalent more than 0.25mm lead equivalent. And, will show in the direction of application to clinic. The new aprons by manufacturers(H, X, I, J company) and lead equivalent(0.50mmPb, 0.35mmPb, 0.25mmPb) measured transmitted dose rate and shielding rate, uniformity under fluoroscopy and general radiography using to fluoroscopy system and digital radiography system, x-ray multifunction meter. The shielding rate measurement results, 0.5mmPb apron was Shielding rate of apron of a I company(fluoroscopy : 97.96%) was the best under six companies, and shielding rate of apron of a J company(fluoroscopy : 96.25%) was worst. 0.35mmPb Apron was Shielding rate of a I company(fluoroscopy : 96.79%) was the best under the three companies, and shielding rate of an H company(fluoroscopy : 95.81%) was the worst. 0.25mmPb Apron was Shielding rate of X company apron(fluoroscopy : 90.908%) was better than H company apron(fluoroscopy : 88.82%) than two companies. The uniformity measurement results, 0.5mmPb Aprons of X company(fluoroscopy : 0.13) and I company(fluoroscopy : 0.19) was the best under the six companies, and J company apron(fluoroscopy : 0.45) was the worst. 0.35mmPb. Along a manufacturer and lead equivalent performance of apron protection is distinguished certainly. Therefore, a patient, guardian or a person engaged in radiation related industry shall enforce experiment of a lot of ways defined or evaluation so that the maximum reduces radiation exposure. Buy the apron that protective performance is good, It will be performed through experiment and evaluation.

  • Changes in the energy spectrum were analyzed using 99mTc as a point source and a scattering phantom, and the shielding effect of the lead apron according to the changed gamma ray energy was evaluated. In the gamma ray energy spectrum of the scattering phantom, the photo peak area decreased and the compton scattering area increased compared to the point source. The coefficients for each energy range according to the change in the shape of the gamma ray source showed a reduction rate of up to 66.1 % at a distance of 20 cm compared to the coefficient of the point source, and in the compton scattering area, the coefficient of the scattering phantom was 122.2 % at a distance of up to 40 cm compared to the coefficient of the point source. In the difference in shielding rate according to the distance between the source and the scattering phantom using a gamma camera, the photo peak area showed similar results, but in the Compton scattering area, the shielding rate of the scattering phantom at a distance of 20 cm increased by 29.2 % compared to the shielding rate of the point source. As the distance increased, the difference in shielding rate decreased. In measuring the shielding rate of the lead apron using a radiation dosimeter, the difference in the shielding rate of the scattering phantom was up to 15.3 %, and as the distance increased, the difference in the shielding rate between the two sources decreased. The shielding rate of the lead apron of the scattering phantom is higher than that of the point source, and the effectiveness of the lead apron increases as the distance to the source increases. As a result, wearing a lead apron when directly confronting a patient who has injected radioactive pharmaceuticals is expected to be helpful in reducing radiation exposure.

  • In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the data by measuring the radiation shielding rate and uniformity in order to evaluate the performance of an Apron. In addition, storage conditions were also evaluated. The uniformity measurement was performed by evaluating the Apron DICOM images using a PACS program. The experiment was intended for 51 Aprons being used in three hospitals in the Daejeon area. The radiation shielding rate and uniformity were measured per lead equivalent for 0.25 mmPb, 0.35 mmPb, and 0.5 mmPb. As a result, the higher lead equivalents were, the greater differences in the non-uniformity between the top part and the bottom part became (p=0.020). In all hospitals, regarding the non-uniformity of four places in Aprons, all showed statistically significant differences (p<0.01). The average value of the transmitted radiation dose showed less difference (p=0.005) in the bottom right than in the upper right but was statistically significant. There have been no marks of manufacturing date or the date of purchase in the Apron.

  • Health professionals in nuclear medicine were known that they get high radiation exposure. To reduce radiation exposure, using shielding materials is needed. In this study, we analyzed the shielding effect about apron during 18F-FDG treatment by using simulation based on Monte Carlo techniques and actual measurement. As a result, absorbed dose distribution of organ varies with handling position of the source. Dose reduction ratio by lead thickness of apron tended to decease, when handling position of the source come close to organ and away from radiation source for simulation. In the case of actual measurement with the dosimetry device, It showed that mean spatial dose distribution was different due to characteristics of dosimetry device. However, spatial dose rate was exponentially reduced according to distance with increasing lead content.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the postural muscle activity during wearing a lead apron with and without applying waist belt at working posture. Ten healthy male subjects were recruited for this study. Electromyography using a surface EMG recorded the activity of the splenius capitis, trapezius, and erector spinae. EMG activity was recorded at quiet standing, 45 degrees of neck flexion, 45 degrees of neck flexion with 15 degrees of trunk flexion. The testing order was selected randomly. The subjects were asked to maintain the each posture for 3 minutes. The mean root mean square (RMS) of EMG activity was calculated. EMG activity was normalized using the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) elicited using a manual muscle testing technique. Two-factor repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the average RMS value of EMG activity for each condition. The EMG activity of trapezius muscle was significantly decreased with applying waist belt (p<.05). The muscle activity of splenius capitis and erector spinae showed significant difference according to postures (p<.05). These results suggest that applying waist belt during wearing a lead apron will be useful to prevent shoulder pain.
