  • In this work, we characterized the shieldability and lightweight of radiation protective aprons which were consisted of various metal(Pb, Sn, Ni, Ti and Cu) by measuring the x-ray dose transmitted through the filters. The transmitted ratio and lead equivalent of various metal were obtained by linear interpolation and the lead equivalent of double layered filters contained Pb layer was determined. The transmitted ratio of the apron(0.25 mmPb) specified in KS B 0845 was 5.2%. The transmitted ratio of the filters at the thickness of 0.6 mm was decreased in the other of Ni(32.60%), Ti(17.75%), Cu(13.25%) and Sn(3.84%). From the results of experimental evaluation for combined filter of Pb and Sn, it was founded that in the case of the first Sn layer, the lead equivalent was higher than that of the first Pb layer. The lead equivalent corresponding to apron of 0.25 mmPb was obtained in the double layered filters of Sn(0.19 mm) - Pb(0.1 mm) and Pb(0.1 mm) - Sn(0.37 mm). Thus, the Sn-Pb filter had the lower weight about 13% than apron of 0.25 mmPb.

  • The mechanism of a matrix modification for the trace determination of volatile lead and bismuth by an electro-thermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry was studied by a X-ray diffractometry (XRD). For the investigation of structures, the ash products of the elements were produced by using a palladium as a matrix modifier with or without aluminum or nickel as an auxiliary modifier. The same charring conditions as in the analysis of samples were applied together with much concentrated solution of analytical elements and modifiers in a graphite furnace to get a large amount of the product for XRD. The XRD patterns showed PbPd3 for lead and BiPd3 for bismuth. These mean that the reaction procedures through the charring and atomization were changed from $Pb^{2+}$ ${\rightarrow}$ PbO ${\rightarrow}$$Pb^0$ to $Pb^{2+}$ ${\rightarrow}$ PbO ${\rightarrow}PbPd_3$ ${\rightarrow}$ Pb o for lead and from $Bi^{3+}$ ${\rightarrow}$ BiO ${\rightarrow}$ Bi o to $Bi^{3+}$ ${\rightarrow}$ BiO ${\rightarrow}$ $BiPd_3$ ${\rightarrow}$ $Bi^0$ for bismuth by the addition of modifiers. The volatile elements were stabilized by the formation of palladium alloys through a charring process. Charring temperatures were raised about 500 $^{\circ}C$ by the alloying and the atomization was also stabilized for the enhancement of sensitivities.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the capability of Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa and Betula schmidtii for the uptake of Pb from the lead-contaminated soil and their tolerance to lead. Rooted cuttings in the former species and germinated seedlings in the latter species were planted in pots and irrigated with Pb-containing water for 60 days. In both tree species, growth inhibition was observed in 800, and 1,500ppm of $Pb(NO_3)_2$. Most Pb was accumulated in plant roots and only a small portion was transported to the shoots. The translocation rates of Pb for B. schmidtii and P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa were 1.6-2.6% and 1.2-1.6%, respectively. The maximum Pb content accumulated in shoots was 468.0mg/kg d.w. in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, and 602.0mg/kg d.w. in B. schmidtii. Although tolerance to lead was generally higher in B. schmidtii than P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, the highest tolerance to lead was observed in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa clone, 72-16. Finally, we discussed the applicability of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa and B. schmidtii for phytoextraction based on their Pb uptake ability, high biomass production, and easiness in large-scale cultivation.

  • A study was carried out to investigate yield, yield components, and change of chemical components in rice plants grown under different concentration of lead compound in nutrient solution of sandy culture. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Increasing lead concentration in culture solutions, pb content in the plant was increased and crop yields were decreased. 2. The critical pb concentration at which yield was declined, was 13.6 ppm. 3. As adding higher concentration of lead in nutrient solutions, concentration of lead in rice plant was significantly increased on leaf blade, and brown rice in pb. 4. Yield loss was closely related to pb content in leaf blade.

  • The determination method for the trace lead and cadmium in glass materials was developed by ICP-AES. The lead- and cadmium-DDTC chelates were formed by adding Na-DDTC (sodium diethyldithiocarbamate) as a chelating agent and extracted into MIBK (methyl-isobutyl ketone). Direct measuring of the trace lead and cadmium in glass was not possible because of the interferences of matrix elements as Na, Si, Mg and Ca of glasses unless solvent extraction of lead and cadmium was applied. This procedure was confirmed to be valid quantitative method of Pb and Cd analysis in glass did not influence of sample matrix, by applying it procedure to artifact sample and NIST SRM 1412.

  • This paper presents the investigations on the initial strength and its variation of Sn-Pb solder joint using different lead frames, such as are 42 alloy lead and Cu alloy lead. As the result of the lack of initial strength at solder joints, whose pitch is from 0.3 to 0.4mm, short circuit often occured at the solder joint by thermal shock or external impact. Therefore, in this paper investigations were performed on the initial strength and its variation of Sn-Pb solder joint as well as fractured mode with using different lead frames.

  • Generally, it has been known that positive plate efficiency is the most influential effect on the initial current capacity of lead acid battery. Thus, in this study, we have investigated the curing effect of the positive plate, which is one of the important lead acid battery processes. The curing process of the positive plate is performed either with the separation of each plate with 1mm gap or with no gap of plate. As a result, when there is no interval between each plate, the higher temperature current happened than expected, resulting in the changes in the initial current efficiency of the lead acid battery. The chemical composition and crystal structure of a material coated on the positive plate were identified with XRD and SEM. It was resulted that were only there not a lot of 4BS (tetrabasic-lead sulfate, $4PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4)$ on the plate in case of curing of plates without interval, but a large quantity of $Pb_3O_4$ also formed on the surface. On the other hand, it was observed that 3BS (tribasic-lead sulface, $3PbO{\cdot}PbSO_4{\cdot}H_2O)$ was the main product on the plate in case of typical curing process with some interval. From the initial current capacity test, the positive plate having 3BS was approximately 40% higher in initial current capacity than that having 4BS. It was concluded that 4BS and $Pb_3O_4$ on the plate surface were harmful to the initial current capacity of lead acid battery.

  • Lead dioxide thin films were electrodeposited on nickel substrate from acidic lead nitrate solution. Current efficiency and thickness measurements, cyclic voltammetry, AFM, SEM, and X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted on $PbO_2$ surface to elucidate the effect of lead nitrate concentration, current density, temperature on the morphology, chemical behavior, and crystal structure. Experimental results showed that deposition efficiency was affected by the current density and solution concentration. The film thickness was independent of current density when deposition from high $Pb(NO_3)_2$ concentration, while it decreased for low concentration and high current density deposition. On the other hand, deposition temperature had negative effect on current efficiency more for lower current density deposition. Cyclic voltammetric study revealed that comparatively more ${\beta}-PbO_2$ produced compact deposits when deposition was carried out from high $Pb(NO_3)_2$ concentration. Such compact films gave lower charge discharge current density during cycling. SEM and AFM studies showed that deposition of regular-size sharp-edge grains occurred for all deposition conditions. The grain size for high temperature and low concentration $Pb(NO_3)_2$ deposition was bigger than from low temperature and high concentration deposition conditions. While cycling converted all grains into loosely adhered flappy deposit with numerous pores. X-ray diffraction measurement indicates that high concentration, high temperature, and high current density favored ${\beta}-PbO_2$ deposition while ${\alpha}-PbO_2$ converted to ${\beta}-PbO_2$ together with some unconverted $PbSO_4$ during cycling in $H_2SO_4$.

  • Minari(Oenanthe stolonifera DC.) lived in serious polluted water is able to remove chemical elements from batch system. This study attempted to compare the incorporation of cadmium and lead in batch system. Different concentrations of Cd(0.02 0.1 0.5 1.00 5.00 mg/l) and Pb(0.1 0.5 1.0 5.0 10.0 mg/l) were used. Toxic effects were obvious at Cd 1.00 mg/l and Pb 5.00 mg/l. The detrimental effects on minari were chlorosis of leaves and stunted roots and reduction in the number of lateral roots. There was reduction in growth rates exposed above Cd 1.00 mg/l and lead 5.0 mg/l. The minari capacities to remove Cd were 34.1-74.2% and Pb were 53.0~91.5%. The removal rates by minari in Cd and Pb solution were decreased with increased exposure concentration(in Cd r=0.97, in Pb r=0.88). The removal rates by minari in Cd and Pb solution were increased with increased growth rate(in Cd r=0.93 in Pb r=0.92). Recovery rates on minari are 67.3~95.2% in Cd water and 72.6~88.3% in Pb water. The rates are increased with increased growth rates and decreased initial concentrations.
