  • Reproductive biology and population dynamics of Latreutes planirostris were investigated on the south western waters of Korea from June 2001 to May 2002. This paper describes sex ratio, population growth, and reproductive aspects of Latreutes planirostris. Brood size was an isometric function of female carapace length. Based on dry weight, reproduction effort (mass of eggs/mass of female) averaged 0.23. Ovarian examination showed that there was significantly higher gonadosomatic index from May to September, with a peak in June. Statistical analysis revealed that the ovarian dry weight of females with eyed eggs was significantly higher than that of those with non-eyed eggs. This suggests that females were potentially consecutive breeders. Sex ratio showed that female is more numerous than male. Growth parameters mortality and recruitment were estimated by monthly length-frequency data. Growth parameters were estimated, using the seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function model $(L\infty\;=\;12.70\;mm\;CL,\;K\;=\;0.87yr^{-1},\;C\;=\;0.96,\;WP\;=\;0.59)$. The recruitment pattern was twice a year.

  • We investigated the fecundity, egg size, reproductive output, and breeding frequency and season of Neocaridina denticulata denticulata and Latreutes planirostris which inhabit extremely different habitats. The marine shrimp Latreutes planirostris produced more eggs had at a given carapace length than the freshwater shrimp N. d. denticulata. However, N. d. denticulata had a larger egg volume and greater reproductive output than L. planirostris. The monthly gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the freshwater shrimp began to increase in April and reached a maximum in May, suggesting a single breeding period. In contrast, the GSI of the marine shrimp exhibited two breeding peaks: May-June and September. In both shrimps, the regressions between carapace length and ovarian weight were significant at the non-eyed and eyed embryo stages. For both species, an analysis of covariance revealed significant difference between the two regressions in elevation, but not in slope. These results indicate the potential for multiple ovulations within the reproductive season.

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of decapod crustacean assemblage in Hampyeong Bay, Korea were examined. Sampling was monthly made by a shrimp trawl between March 2003 to February 2004. A total of 39 species of 20 families were collected. Of these, Latreutes planirostris, Palaemon gravieri, Parapenaeopsis tenella, Exopalaemon carinicauda, Charybdis japonica, Trachysalambria curvirostris and Palaemon macrodactylus were dominant species comprising $84.3\%$ of the total number of individuals. Charybdis japonica, P. gravieri, Oratosquilla oratoria, E. carinicauda, T curvirostris, Metapenaeus joyneri and P. tenella represented $90.6\%$ of the total biomass. While total abundance (number of individuals) was high in spring, total biomass and species richness (number of species) and diversity were high in summer. Cluster analysis, based on monthly abundance data of the 14 most common species, showed that the species were separated into three different groups. Group A composed of Leptochela gracilis, Alpheus japonicus, Crangon uritai, P. macrodactylus, E. carinicauda, P. gravieri, O. oratoria, C. japonica, which were year round residents, group B M. joyneri, T. curvirostris and P. tenella, which were abundant in summer, and group C Crangon hakodatei, Latreutes anoplonyx and L. planirostris, which were abundant in winter. Principal component analysis revealed that seasonal variation in the decapod crustacean assemblage was attributed to the abundance of temporal species such as penaeid shrimps, which were abundant in summer, due to seasonal variation of water temperature and reproductive pattern.

  • In order to study the community structure and distribution pattern of macrobenthos in the subtidal area of Shia Sea between Haenam peninsula and Shinan-Jindo area at southwest coast of Korea, duplicate sediment samples were taken seasonally by van Veen grab (surface area, $0.1m^2$) from 49 stations between November 2001 and August 2002. The surface sediment facies were muddy sandy gravel near Mokpo-Gu channel, gravel in the Myoungrang channel with high tidal currents, and sandy muddy in the southern Uido area. Ignition loss in the sediment ranged from 0.5 to 1.5% with a mean of 0.6%. A total of 271 taxa were collected with a mean density of $166ind.\;m^{-2}$ and a mean biomass of $29.2g\;m^{-2}$. Polychaetes were dominant faunal group in terms of species richness and abundance, accounting for 34% and 40% of total species number and abundance, respectively. Molluscs accounted for 44% of biomass. Bio-Env analysis revealed that sediment composition and ignition loss affected the spatial distribution of subtidal macrobenthic community in the study area. Major dominant species were Photis longicaudata, Septifer keenae, Maldane cristata, Lumbrineris longifolia, Heteromastus filiformis and Coptothyris grayi. Based on cluster analysis, four station groups were classified. They were associated with sediment types. Bivalve, Striarca symmetrica, polychaetes, Glycera chirori, Heteromastus filiformis and decapod Latreutes planirostris were major contributing fauna in station group A, B, C, and D, respectively. These results suggest that macrobenthic community of the Shia Sea is normally influenced by sediment type and related ignition loss.
