  • Some optimal designs and data analysis methods based on a Gaussian spatial linear model for computer simulation experiments are considered. For designs of computer experiments, Latin-hypercube designs and some optimal designs are combined. A two-stage computational (2-points exchange and Newton-type) algorithm for finding the optimal Latin-hypercube design is presented. The spatial prediction model which was discussed by Sacks, Welch, Mitchell and Wynn(1989) for computer experiments, is used for analysis of the simulated data. Moreover, a method of contructing sequential (optimal) Latin-hypercube designs is considered. An application of this approach to the quality improvement and optimization of the integrated circuit design via the main-effects plot and the sequential experimental strategy is presented.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the minimum proportion of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information using VISSIM, a micro traffic simulation model, between Yongin IC and Yangji IC on Yeongdong Expressway. 7,200 scenarios were created for the experiment, and 40 scenarios were adopted using the Latin hypercube sampling method because it was difficult to perform all the scenarios through experiments. The reliability of the experiment was improved by adding a situation when the general situation and the accident situation exist. In the experiments, the average travel time of probe vehicles at different market penetration rates were compared with the average travel time of the entire vehicles. As a result, the minimum market penetration rate of probe vehicles for obtaining expressway traffic information was found to be 45%. In addition, it is estimated that 25% market penetration rate of probe vehicle can meet 70% of traffic situations in accident scenario.

  • This study was designed to make a comparative analysis of fertility control policies in developing countries selected from Asia and Latin America. Considering the size and the density of population, the history of the fertility control policy, and the availability of references, eight countries were chosen among Asian developing countries that have adopted the fertility control as an official policy. All of nine countries in Latin America that have adopted family planning as an official policy were included in this study. An attempt was made to formulate an analytical framework to be used for a comparative analysis of fertility control policies. It can be represented by a continuum which consists of individual approaches and structural approaches to fertility control at both extremes. It represents fairly well the controversies between those who advocate family planning and those who advocate measures beyond family planning, but assumes that the two sides of the controversy form a continuum of approaches to fertility control. Various fertility control policies of each country were placed along this continuum and analyzed. The results of the analysis can be summarized as follows: (a) Those countries that have higher population pressure in terms of either the size of population or the population density tend to adopt fertility control policies earlier in time. (b) Those countries that have higher population pressure in terms of either the size of population or the population density tend to adopt more comprehensive measures along the continuum of fertility control policies. (c) Those countries that adopted more comprehensive measures along the continuum seem to have succeeded in reducing their level of fertility more effectively. (d) Developing countries in Asia tend to adopt more comprehensive measures to control fertility than those in Latin American countries. (e) The reduction of fertility in developing countries seems to be associated with both the fertility control policies and the level of socioeconomic development.

  • This study is about the features of hybridization of ethnic-cultural elements in Korean fashion magazines. Its purpose was to embody more creative and newer images in fashion by promoting better mutual understanding of foreign cultures and addressing the issues of fashion design from multicultural perspectives. In doing so, the present study conducted a literature review and analyzed a total of 130 photographic images with any hybrid ethic element from two Korean fashion magazines, Vogue Korea and Harper's Bazaar Korea, issued between 2005 and 2009. The analysis revealed that there were 66 images(50.8%) with a mixture of two different cultures and 64 images(49.2%) with a mixture of three or more different cultures. As seen from the results, the two categories had a similar number of cases. In regional terms, the use of two different cultural elements included a mixture of Asian and Western cultures in 32 images(24.6%), a mixture of Western and African, Middle Eastern or Latin American cultures in 23(17.7%), and a mixture of Western and Russian or European folk cultures in 11(8.5%). In the use of three or more different cultural/national elements, the present study found a mixture of Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Latin American and Western costume items in 20 photo images(15.4%), a mixture of African, Middle Eastern and Latin American elements plus Western costume items in 19 images( 14.6%), a mixture of all regional cultures in 13 photos(10%), and a mixture of Asian ethic cultures plus Western costume items in 12 cases(9.2%). The results of this analysis indicated that the hybridization of ethnic-culture elements in Korean fashion magazines consisted of diverse clothing and accessories from various ethnic groups. The expression of these multi-cultural hybrid images that consists background images and models from different cultures well-portrayed the multi-cultural elements based on total coordination and broke the stereotypical aspects of styling.

  • Structural impact problems are becoming increasingly important for a modern defense industry, high-speed transportation, and other applications because of the weight reduction with high strength. In this study, a numerical investigation on the impact fracture behavior of aluminum plates was performed under various projectile conditions such as nose shapes, velocities, and incidence angles. In order to reduce the iterative numerical analysis, the Latin Square Method was employed. The influence factor was then determined by an FE analysis according to the conditions. The results were evaluated by means of a statistical significance interpretation using variance assessment. It was shown that the velocity and incidence angle can be the most important influence factors representing the impact absorption energy and plastic deformation, respectively.

  • Compared with single design, powers of rank transformed statistic for testing main and interaction effects for $2{\times}2$ factorial in $4{\times}4$ latin square design are rapidly increased as effect size and replication size are increased. In general powers of rank transformed statistic are superior without regard to the diversified effect composition and the type of error distributions as nontesting factors are few and effect size are small. Powers of rank transformed statistic show much higher level than those of parametric statistic in exponential and double exponential distributions. Further powers of rank transformed statistic are very similar with those of parametric statistic in normal and uniform distributions.

  • The 19th century could not relatively receive attention from local researchers because it was treated as the past cut off from the present as the formative period of modern states of Latin America. According to the characteristics of area studies which focus on changes of politics and society, studies on past affairs could not have been the main focus of attention. But as new liberalism has appeared in Latin America, is throwing the spotlight on liberalism. In addition, the studies on the 19th century have been activated and gradually expanded. And interpretation about the 19th century's history has been variously arranged. Especially, discussion on liberalism and conservatism was established as the key words which can understand and reconsider Latin America in the 19th century. Colombian liberalism which could not overcome heritage of the colonial period in the 19th century and did appear advocating reformation was another form of authoritarianism. Reformation promoted by liberalism was utilized to keep privilege of the ruling class, not to remove the social and economic structure derived from the colonial period. New reformist forces which advocated mercantilism after the middle of the 19th century but they were formed based on the existing system. Colombian Liberal Party was developed as "Another name of conservatization" by reflecting understanding of the conservatives. Colombian liberalists preferred federalism to cut off from repressive characteristics of Spanish colonial rule and secure autonomy of local control through reformation based on economic understanding. Therefore, discussion on the form of government which focused on federalism and centralism acted as the causes of conflict between Colombian liberalism and conservatism. Based on this point, this study tries to analyze liberalism reforms which is the main issue in the Colombian history in the 19th century and consider history of Colombian political conflicts focusing on federalism. The origin of Violencia which is the political violence and Colombian history in the 19th century which has been a series of rebellion can be considered through this procedure.

  • A semiconductor fabrication facility(FAB) is one of the most capital-intensive and large-scale manufacturing systems which operate under complex and uncertain constraints through hundreds of fabrication steps. To improve fab performance with intuitive scheduling, practitioners have used weighted-sum scheduling. Since the determination of weights in the scheduling significantly affects fab performance, they often rely on simulation-based decision making for obtaining optimal weights. However, a large-scale and high-fidelity simulation generally is time-intensive to evaluate with an exhaustive search. In this study, we investigated three sampling methods (i.e., Optimal latin hypercube sampling(OLHS), Genetic algorithm(GA), and Decision tree based sequential search(DSS)) for the optimization. Our simulation experiments demonstrate that: (1) three methods outperform greedy heuristics in performance metrics; (2) GA and DSS can be promising tools to accelerate the decision-making process.

  • This paper analyzed what determines affected FDI inflow of developing countries by using panel data from 65 lower-middle income and low income countries(Asia, Africa and Latin America). Empirical results showed that economic growth has a more positive impact on a middle income country than a lower one, and has a better impact on the Asian continent than others. Trade has similar effect on lower and middle income countries, respectively. ODA, however, has a negative effect on both sides, regardless of the continent. Industrial value added rate and labor force have a positive effect on FDI in low and middle income countries. Infrastructure was found to be a significant impact on FDI inflows in lower-middle income countries than in low income countries. There is no geographically significant difference except Africa.
