  • This study were predicted the corrosion threshold reached at steel reinforcement in latex modified concrete(LMC) which were applied the agricultural hydraulic concrete structures. Accelerated testing was accomplished to the evaluate the diffusion coefficient of LMC mix, and the time dependent constants of diffusion. Also, the average chloride diffusion coefficient was estimated. From the average chloride ion diffusion coefficient, the time which critical chloride contents at depth of reinforcement steel was estimated. Test results indicated that the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were effected on the mix proportion factor including cement contents, latex content, and water-cement ratio. Especially, the average chloride diffusion coefficient, the corrosion threshold reached at reinforcement in LMC were affected by the all mix proportion factor.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of blast-furnace slag on strength development and durability of latex-modified concrete (LMC) and ordinary portland cement concrete as slag contents. Main experimental variables were performed latex contents (0%, 10%, 15%) and slag contents (0%, 30%). The compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion rapid permeability and chemical attacks resistance were measured to analyze the characteristic of the developed LMC and BS-LMC(latex-modified concrete added blast-furnace slag) on hardened concrete. The test results showed that compressive and flexural strength of BS-LMC increased as the slag contents increased from 0% to 30% at the long term of curing. It considers blast furnace slag used when latex content was up to 10%. The permeability resistance of BS-LMC(latex 10%, blast 30%) was extremely good at the curing time 90 days. Also. the effects of added blast furnace slag on OPC and LMC were increased on the permeability and chemical attacks resistance.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a rapid setting cement latex modified concrete (RSLMC) for bridge deck repairing and overlaying. The main experimental variables were latex contents, antifoamer contents and water-cement ratioes. The workability, strength development and permeability were measured as responses. The results showed that latex content increased the slump and reduced the unit water required for same workability. The air contents were measured as 8.0∼9.0% and 2.0∼3.0% without antifoamer and with 1.6∼3.2% of antifoamer, respectively. This resulted in the increment of compressive strength development by 10∼20 %. The flexural strength of RSLMC increased greatly as the latex content increased, but not in compressive strength. The compressive strength and flexural strength developed enough for opening the overlayed RSLMC to the traffic after 3 hours of RSLMC placement. The permeability of RSLMC was evaluated as negligible due to its very low charge passed. Thus, RSLMC could be used at repairing or overlaying the concrete bridge deck at fast-track job sites.

  • It is well known that latex modification can lead to enhancement compressive and flexural performance, tensile bond strength, chloride penetration resistance and freezing-thawing resistance for concrete. For these, many studies for LMC pavement have been widely conducted more than those for conventional pavement concrete. However, due to several problems such as noise and construction cost, new approaches for LMC have been executed to improve the performance of LMC. Recently, Remicon LMC was developed in order to solve the problems of LMC. In this study, the durability of Remcion LMC was compared with latex and mineral additive mixing ratio. From the results, when latex and mineral additive were mixed in Remicon LMC, compressive, flexural and bond strength were satisfied with Korea Highway Construction Guide Specification. And, it showed that the qualitative effect of latex and mineral additive mixing ratio on the durability of Remicon LMC was investigated experimentally. Also, the latex mixed in Remicon LMC must be at least 8%, in order to ensure the durability equivalent or higher than conventional LMC.

  • This study investigated the use of latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers (LMSC) as a repair material. Notably, no prior research has explored the application of LMSC for this purpose. This paper examines the interface bond strength and the type of failure between LMSC as a repair material and the normal concrete (NC) substrate utilising four different surfaces: without surface preparation as a reference (SR), hand hammer (HA), sandblasted (SB), and grooved (GR). The bond strength was measured by bi-surface shear, splitting tensile, and pull-off strength tests at 7, 28, and 90 days. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was also performed to study the microstructure of the interface between the normal concrete substrate and the latex-modified sand concrete reinforced with sisal fibers. The results of this study indicate that LMSC has bonding strength with NC, especially for HR and SB surfaces with high roughness. Therefore, substrate NC surface roughness is essential in increasing the bonding strength and adhesion. Eventually, The LMSC has the potential to repair and rehabilitate concrete structures.

  • Shotcrete has been referred to as gunite, pneumatically applied mortar or concrete, sprayed concrete or mortar. There are sound reasons why sprayed mortar is one of the best portland cement based material for repairing old concrete structures. However, it is difficult to find the research results on the latex-modified mortar nevertheless on the impact of air onto the fresh and hardened properties of latex-modified mortar. So, the main experimental program included strength test, slump test, rapid chloride permeability test, image analysis for air void system, and chemical attacks with the main experimental variables of latex content, fine aggregate content, water-cement ratio, and air foamer content.

  • This research was to evaluate the shrinkage and durability performance of latex modified repair mortar and to improve the service lift of the agricultural concrete structures. The shrinkage characteristics of the repair material creates the delamination of repair materials and existing concrete. It may reduce the service life of structures. Also the reduction of durability performance of the repair materials induces the destruction of the repaired concrete structures at early stage. In this research, plastic and drying shrinkage, thermal expansion coefficient for shrinkage properties, durability performance, permeability, repeated freezing and thawing, and resistance of chemical solution test were performed. Test results showed that the latex modified repair mortar indicated the shrinkage amount which the delamination does not happen, and the latex modified repair mortar appeared excellent long-term durability performance which can increase the service life.

  • Recently, very-early strength latex-modified concrete(below ; VES-LMC) has been developed for repairing and overlaying the old concrete bridge deck. VES-LMC provides the advantage of very-early-strength, as well as high flexural strength, bond strength, durability, resistance to corrosion, reduced water permeability and resistance to damage from freeze-thaw cycles. The compressive and flexural strength of VES-LMC are 21 MPa and 4.5 MPa at 3 hours after concrete placing, respectively. However, VES-LMC would have a relatively large shrinkage at early-age because of reduced water-cement ratio, big water self-dissipation, and rapid hydration reaction. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the early-age and restrained shrinkage of VES-LMC, having an experimental variables such as latex contents and cement types. The latex contents included 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, and the cement types included ordinary portland cement and very-early strength cement.

  • As a trend of construction has become high-rise and larger, it is necessary to reduce the self-weight of structures and buildings. One of the most effective methods to reduce the self-weight of structures and buildings is to use the lightweight aggregate concrete. To complement the strength of the lightweight aggregate concrete, polymer was added to concrete's mixing. In this study, experiments to make the moderate mixing proportion of polymer modified lightweight concrete were performed. Also the hardened concrete tests were performed to investigate the physical characteristics of the polymer-modified lightweight aggregate concrete. As a result, the flexural strength was increased by a small quantity of SBR Latex. Based on the test results the estimating equation was proposed through the regression analysis.
