The results of a series of ten W-shaped test specimens subjected to monotonic, quasi-static cyclic loading and fatigue type of loading in the form of constant amplitude tests are presented. The objectives were to assess and compare the rotation capacity and energy absorption of monotonically and cyclically loaded beams, and for the latter specimens to document the deterioration in the form of low cycle fatigue due to local buckling. In addition, strength and energy dissipation deterioration and damage models have been developed for the steel beam section under consideration. Finally, a generalized model which uses plate slenderness values and lateral slenderness is proposed for predicting rate in strength deterioration per reversal and cumulated damage after a given number of reversals.

Since regulation or specification for the reinforcing method are quite ambiguous, structural design for the reinforcement can be subjectively and arbitrarily conducted. Thus, reasonable limitation and guide for the quantity of the reinforcement are required for the safe use of the structure after repair. In order to guarantee the safety of the structural member several items should be considered; reinforcing limit to avoid the brittle failure, least required strength of the existing member before reinforcement in order not to fail under the new serviceability load condition when reinforcing steel plates or CFRP sheets are harmed or subjected to fire.

This paper presents numerical analysis results for the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) strength of steel I-girder bridges. Current Korean and AASHTO design specifications for LTB consider the buckling strength of a single girder with both its ends constrained. The I-girder bridges are composed of more than one girder, and the girders are interconnected with intermediate cross-beams or cross-frames. Therefore, it should be required to evaluate the effects of cross-beam stiffness and the interactionof girders on LTB strength. It is also necessary to consider the effects of transverse web stiffeners on LTB strength. By considering these parameters, a series of four-girder systemswere numerically modeled using 3D shell elements to estimate the LTB strength while considering initial imperfections and residual stresses.

This study delves into the interaction dynamics between lateral notches and inclusions, providing valuable insights for more effective engineering of structural components. By employing the finite element method, the research analyzes how inclusions affect the dimensions and contours of the plastic zone under confined plasticity conditions. Several parameters were investigated, including loading influence, the distance between the inclusion and notch tip, inclusion stiffness, and the distribution of Von Mises stress, as well as normal stresses σxx and σyy, and Comparison between different stresses. Examining stress distributions under varying loading conditions reveals a significant intensification, particularly near the crack tip. Moreover, the presence of an inclusion near the notch base reduces both the size and shape of the plastic zone. The distribution of the stresses for different loads knows an increase in intensity, especially near the crack head, which is the most requested by the tensile forces on its upper part, which can cause either the crack's initiation or opening, inducing significant stresses.
The thin web panels of plate girders often need to be reinforced with transverse stiffeners to increase the shear strength. Since early 1960s, extensive researches have been conducted on the ultimate shear strength of plate girder webs with transverse stiffeners. These results have been first adopted into AASHTO(1970) and British Standard(1983) Specifications for the determination of the ultimate shear strength of transversely stiffened web panels. Although the main purposes of reinforcing web panels with longitudinal stiffeners are to increase the buckling strength and to control the lateral deflections due to bending, it has been reported that the longitudinal stiffeners increase the shear strength. However lack of studies has kept the effects of the longitudinal stiffeners on the ultimate shear strength from the design of plate girder web panels. In the present study an experimental investigation is carried out in order to assess the increment of the ultimate shear strength of shear web panels due to the longitudinal stiffeners and the results are compared with the existing failure theories.

The composite two plate-girder bridges are generally defined as a non-redundant load path structure because the bridge can collapse if one of the two girders is seriously damaged by a fatigue crack. In this paper, a numerical study on the evaluation of the after-fracture redundancy of the composite two-girder bridges was accomplished. The evaluation has been performed on the simple and three-span continuous bridges with I-section cross beams which serve as transverse bracing, and with or without the bottom lateral bracing system. The load carrying capacities of the intact and damaged bridges with or without lateral bracing were evaluated from material and geometric nonlinear analysis, respectively and the redundancy was evaluated for each case. It was acknowledged from the analytical results that both simple and continuous intact two-girder bridges have sufficient redundancy even without lateral bracing, but it takes an important role to improve the redundancy of damaged bridges.
Column base connections are critical components in steel structures because they transfer axial forces, shear forces and moments to the foundation. Exposed column bases are quite commonly used in low- to medium-rise buildings. To investigate shear transfer in exposed column base plates, four large scale specimens were subjected to a combination of axial load (compression or tension) and lateral shear deformations. The main parameters examined experimentally include the number of anchor rod, arrangement of anchor rod, type of lateral loading, and axial force ratio. It is observed that the shear resisting mechanism of exposed column base changed as the axial force changed. When the axial force is in compression, the resisting mechanism is rotation type, and the shear force will be resisted by friction force between base plate and mortar layer. The specimens could sustain inelastic deformation with minimal strength deterioration up to column rotation angle of 3%. The moment resistance and energy dissipation will be increased as the number of anchor rods increased. Moreover, moment resistance could be further increased if the anchor rods were arranged in details. When the axial force is in tension, the resisting mechanism is slip type, and the shear force will be resisted by the anchor rods. And the shear resistance was reduced significantly when the axial force was changed from compression to tension. The test results indicated that the current design approach could estimate the moment resistance within reasonable acceptance, but overestimate the shear resistance of exposed column base.

A combination of CFT column and RC flat plate without formworks is very effectively rapid constructions. This paper verified the lateral resisting capacity of CFT column-RC flat plate exterior connection in comparison with general RC column-flat plate connection and detected moment capacity and ductility capacity of connection according to moment-displacement ratio. We made and tested specimens which have different variables respectively and as a result derive a following conclusion. In CFT-E2 specimen a critical section was extended and maximum moment increased 20% respectively in comparison to general RC column specimen. In BME and CFT-E1 specimens generally shear governed behaviors and CFT-E2 specimen complemented with seismic band, flexure behavior region of slab was extended and also ductility ratio and energy absorptance increased.
Line type rigid bearings for Open-Steel-Plate-Girder railway bridges have several problems in service, and they are unstable structurally. A series of lateral resistance tests were performed for a retrieved line type bearing. A spherical bearing with advanced maintenance-capability and a device to resist the up-lift was developed and replaced the existing ones. An experiment of maintenance for a new spherical bearing under real Open-Steel-Plate-Girder bridge was conducted and their good maintenance performance was proved. Also, a test against up-lift was performed for the bearing. The dynamic behavior of the bridge was measured and analyzed for the two cases of the existing and replaced bearings. Therefore, the suitability of the new spherical bearings on the railway bridge was improved.
With the increase in the demand for high-rise buildings, the use of high-strength steel has likewise increased. Thus, it has become more necessary to study the resistance force of the high-strength hollow structural section (HSS) joint of 600MPa. Additionally, the current design equation in Korea limits maximum yield stress at 360MPa in the case of HSS. In other words, since the current specification does not apply to HSS of 600MPa, this study aims to investigate the applicability of design equations as well as examine the behavior of the connection through the experiment and finite element analysis (FEA) of the plate-tube connection of 600MPa. In particular, this paper presents the behavior of joints with the gusset plates welded in the longitudinal direction of the circular hollow section (CHS) when the joints are subjected to lateral force. Comparing design equations with the results of FEA and the test, existing design equations are underestimated to be 56~79% in the case of high-strength materials.
