An existing studies concern about movement of pile bridge abutments. However, lateral displacement cause the serious failure of bridge by embankment under soft soil lateral flow A intention is obtained by analyzing the relationship between the safety factor of evaluation for lateral movements. Precise investigation and analysis are performed, in which the lateral movement of bridge abutments has occurred, and construct design strut-slab between bridge abutments in order to restraint lateral flow. As a result of this study, it was found that when evaluation for lateral movements is allowed to use Tschebotarioff's method and lateral flow decision number (I) and revision lateral flow decision number (M$_{I}$) by Korea Highway Corporation. Most important thing is decision of pressure of lateral flow at this case. Tschebotarioff's isoscales triangle method have no trouble analysis of pressure of lateral flow. Strut-slab method are nearly not have constructed case in this field site study that applied method. The method are between abutments combined steel strut and reinforced concrete slab. This method are effective restraint lateral flow but have little difficulty if long span bridge between abutments.s.
This study describes a series of model tests on instrumented pile groups embedded in HAP-CHEN sand undergoing lateral movement. We tried to find the effect of group piles dependent on a number of factors, including the position of the pile in a group, the pile spacing, and the pile arrangement. The results of test are as follows. For the group piles, the bending moment profile for each pile is similar in shape to that of single pile, although the magnitude and the position of the maximum bending moment are different. $R_M$ (the ratio of maximum bending moment) and $R_F$ (the ratio of resistance to lateral soil movement) were found to increase with increasing pile spacing. When a pile is in a group under lateral soil movement, RM increased in the order of the middle row, front row, back row, according to the direction of lateral deformation, and the outer pile has a larger RM than the inner pile.
In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have often been used, on a horizontally deforming ground, to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-Coulomb's plastic states occur in the ground, just around H-piles. In this study, some model experiments were performed to check the lateral forces determined from theoretical equations, using several pile widths, heights and various interval ratios between H-piles for sand specimens. The solution of the theoretical equation, derived from previous studies, showed reasonable characteristics for constants of soil, as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-Pile.
This article has tried to review the maximum contact stresses in the contact area of the wheel and rail as a result of lateral movement of the wheel on rail by taking advantage from Hertz theory. Since wheel movement on rail is accompanied by lateral movement due to wheel profile conisity, so the contact point of wheel and rail is not constant and the contact stresses are therefore changeable in every single moment. Since the shape of rail profile and rail inclination, wheel diameter and the mechanical properties of the wheel and rail are effective on the stresses of contact area, these parameters have been studied by applying Hertz theory. This article aims to calculate the contact stresses in different parts on the wheel surface by using Hertz theory.
The lateral soil movement in soft grounds undergoing improvement with application of vertical drains is analyzed on the basis of monitoring data at three fields, in which fifty six monitoring sites are located. Based on the investigations, the criterions are suggested to predict the lateral soil movement. In order to predict the lateral soil movement in the improved soft grounds by using the dimensionless parameter R suggested by Marche & Chapuis (1974), it is desirable that the maximum lateral displacement in the soft ground below the toe of embankment should be applied to calculate R instead of the lateral displacement at the toe of embankment. The lateral soil movement may increase rapidly, if the safety factor of slope is less than 1.4 in case of high ratio of H/B (Thickness of soft ground/Embankment width) such as 1.15 or is less than 1.2 in case of low ratio of H/B such as 0.05. Also, the graph suggested by Tschebotarioff (1973), which illustrates the relationship between the maximum height of embankments and the undrained shear strength of soft grounds, can be applied to the evaluation for the possibility of the lateral soil movement due to embankments on soft grounds.
A site investigation has been performed for bridge abutments constructed on soft ground, which are deformed laterally by backfill. As the result from the evaluation of lateral movement in bridge abutment, the foundation piles were not considered as the passive pile at the design stage and the period for soft ground improvement was not proper. In order to prevent lateral movement of bridge abutment, the pile slab is proposed as a countermeasure. This method can effectively prevent the lateral flow of soft ground, since the overburden surcharge due to backfill on soft ground would be effectively delivered to bedrock through the piles in soft ground. The instrumentation system is designed and installed to investigate the behavior of bridge abutment on soft ground reinforced by pile slab. The instrumentation results show that pile slab effectively resists to the lateral movement of bridge abutment due to backfill. Also, the surcharge loads due to backfill are transmitted to the bedrock through piles. It confirms that the pile slab effectively resists to the lateral movement of bridge abutment due to backfill and the applied design method is reasonable.
This study was designed to investigate the side shift of orbiting condylar movement by direct measurements from tracings of Denar pantograph. It is well known that side shift has much influence on the articulating surface of teeth. In this study, after locating the ture hinge axis point with Denar hinge axis locatior, the recordings of Mandibular movement were obtained from Denar pantographic recording assembly, and immediate side shift and progressive side shift were measured. For this study, 20 dental studnts who have no missing teeth and no difficulties of mandibular movement and 4 patients who were, treated by occlusal therapy were selected. The results obtained were as follows, 1. The prevalence of immediate side shift was 42%, and the immediate side shift of greater than 0.5mm was only 17%. 2. The mean of immediate side shift (20 of 48) was 0.38mm, that of right lateral excursion (7 of 24) was 0.27mm, and that of left lateral excursion (13 of 24) was 0.44mm. 3. The mean of progressive side shift was $7.21^{\circ}$ that of right lateral excursion was $6.46^{\circ}$, and that of left lateral excursion was $7.96^{\circ}$.

In this paper, the criteria of the lateral displacement in soft soil due to embankment were evaluated. The lateral displacement was measured at a pier structure in a new harbor construction site, and the measurement was compared with the criteria. The results by the measurement such as the critical pressure causing lateral movement in terms of undrained strength, the lateral movement index by Japan Highway Co., the lateral displacement index by Japan Construction Ministry, the modified index by Korean Highway Co. were estimated to be lower than the respective index values.
Background: Although magnetic resonance imaging is accurate, it is expensive to measure the movement of temporomandibular joint. The three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis system is an inexpensive measurement tool. Objects: This study examined the reliability of quantifying the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift and differences between individuals with and without temporomandibular disorder (TMD) using the hygienic method of surface markers on the skin with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. Methods: This study included 24 subjects (12 with and 12 without TMD). Temporomandibular joint motion during mouth opening was recorded using two surface markers with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. An intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC (3,k)] was used to confirm the intrarater reliability of quantifying kinematic temporomandibular joint motion, and an independent t-test was used to evaluate differences in maximal mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift between the two groups. Results: Assessment of mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift showed excellent test-retest reliability with low standard error of measurement. The lateral mandibular shift and opening-lateral mandibular shift ratio were significantly increased in the TMD group during maximum mouth opening (p<.05). However, no significant difference in maximal mouth opening was observed between the groups with and without TMD (p>.05). Conclusion: This hygienic and simple surface marker method can be used to quantify the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift at the end-range of mouth opening. The TMD group showed an increased lateral mandibular shift movement at the end-range of mouth opening. The lateral mandibular shift movement can be regarded as a symptom in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD.
