An Empirical Performance Analysis on Hadoop via Optimizing the Network Heartbeat Period

  • To support a large-scale Hadoop cluster, Hadoop heartbeat messages are designed to deliver the significant messages, including task scheduling and completion messages, via piggybacking to reduce the number of messages received by the NameNode. Although Hadoop is designed and optimized for high-throughput computing via batch processing, the real-time processing of large amounts of data in Hadoop is increasingly important. This paper evaluates Hadoop's performance and costs when the heartbeat period is controlled to support latency sensitive applications. Through an empirical study based on Hadoop 2.0 (YARN) architecture, we improve Hadoop's I/O performance as well as application performance by up to 13 percent compared to the default configuration. We offer a guideline that predicts the performance, costs and limitations of the total system by controlling the heartbeat period using simple equations. We show that Hive performance can be improved by tuning Hadoop's heartbeat periods through extensive experiments.

  • 이동 애드혹 망을 구성하는 노드들은 일반적으로 배터리 전력을 사용하기 때문에 이들의 에너지 소모량을 줄이는 연구들이 각 계층에 대해 이루어져 왔다. 매체 접근 제어 프로토콜로 많이 이용되는 IEEE 802.11 DCF에서도 전력 절감 모드가 정의되어 있으며, 노드들은 동기화된 상태에서 주기적으로 활동 상태와 휴면 상태를 반복한다. 활동 상태 동안 서로 전송할 메시지가 있는지 여부를 이웃 노드에 공지하고, 전송에 관여하게 될 노드들은 계속해서 활동 상태로 머물러 필요한 송수신을 하는 반면, 그 외의 노드들은 다음 주기까지 휴면 상태에 들게 된다. 대부분의 기존 연구들은 보다 많은 전력 절감을 위해 휴면기간을 최대화, 최적화하는 것에 초점을 맞추었다. 그러나, 이로 인해 메시지들이 한 주기 당 한 홉씩 전달되어 결과적으로 매우 긴 전송지연을 초래할 수 있다는 것은 지금까지 간과되었다. 본 논문에서는 IEEE 802.11 DCF의 전력 절감 모드에서 빠른 속도로 전체 망으로의 플러딩을 수행할 수 있는 개선된 프로토콜을 제안하였다. 고정된 길이의 활동 상태 기간 동안 이웃 노드뿐 아니라 최대한 멀리까지 공지를 전달하게 하고, 동시에 많은 구간의 노드가 깨어 있게 함으로써 그 이후의 데이타 메시지 전달 속도를 높인다 시뮬레이션에 의한 실험 결과, 제안된 알고리즘은 IEEE 802.11 DCF 전력 절감 모드와 비교해 약간의 추가 에너지 소모로 플러딩 전송 지연을 최대 80% 이상 감소시켰으며, 플러딩 트래픽이 있을 경우의 유니 캐스팅 전송 지연 또한 약 50% 만큼 감소시키는 성능을 보였다.

  • To evaluate effect of Gamimajeonojahwan(GMOH) water extract on sexual functions, we orally administered GMOH exract(1,100㎎/㎏) for four weeks in male rats impaired by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin(TCDD) and ketoconazole(KZ). And we investigated the sexual behaviors such as mount latency, mount frequency, intromission latency, intromission frequency, ejaculation period and ejaculation latency. Serum testosterone concentrations also are evaluated in GMOH-and/or vehicle-treated male rats. The results were obtained as follows: GMOH inhibited the increase of intromission latency by TCDD in male rats. GMOH inhibited the decrease of intromission frequency by TCDD in male rats. GMOH inhibited the increase of ejaculation latency by TCDD in male rats. GMOH inhibited the decrease of serum testosterone concentration by TCDD in male rats. GMOH inhibited the decrease of serum testosterone concentration by KZ in male rats. These results suggest that GMOH water extract is active in improving sexual functions and protecting a decrease of testosterone concentrations induced by TCDD and KZ in male rats.

무선 센서 네트워크에서 트래픽에 적응적인 Demand-Wakeup MAC 프로토콜 (A Traffic Aware Demand-Wakeup MAC(TADW-MAC) Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks)

  • 본 논문에서는 무선 센서 네트워크의 센서 노드들로부터 전송되는 데이터 트래픽에 따라 낮은 지연과 높은 데이터 효율을 지원하는 새로운 MAC 프로토콜을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 TADW-MAC은 기존의 멀티 홉 전송에서 해당 Sleep 구간에서 오직 하나의 패킷 전송만을 스케줄할 수 있는 DW-MAC의 문제점을 해결하며, 물체 트래킹(object tracking)이나 화재 감시 시스템 등의 응용에 적합한 duty cycling 메커니즘을 가진다. 이러한 응용에서는 평소에는 데이터 전송이 이루어지지 않지만, 물체의 나타남과 화재 발생 등 이벤트가 발생하는 경우에는 많은 데이터를 전송해야 하며, 낮은 지연을 요구한다[6-8]. 따라서 TADW-MAC에서는 이러한 이벤트가 발생하였을 경우에 duty cycle을 조절함으로 보다 높은 효율과 적은 에너지를 소모할 수 있다. 여러 시뮬레이션을 통해 TADW-MAC은 기존의 RMAC이나 DW-MAC에 비해 에너지 효율과 전송 지연 면에서 더 나은 성능을 보여준다.

MDA-SMAC: An Energy-Efficient Improved SMAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

  • In sensor medium access control (SMAC) protocol, sensor nodes can only access the channel in the scheduling and listening period. However, this fixed working method may generate data latency and high conflict. To solve those problems, scheduling duty in the original SMAC protocol is divided into multiple small scheduling duties (micro duty MD). By applying different micro-dispersed contention channel, sensor nodes can reduce the collision probability of the data and thereby save energy. Based on the given micro-duty, this paper presents an adaptive duty cycle (DC) and back-off algorithm, aiming at detecting the fixed duty cycle in SMAC protocol. According to the given buffer queue length, sensor nodes dynamically change the duty cycle. In the context of low duty cycle and low flow, fair binary exponential back-off (F-BEB) algorithm is applied to reduce data latency. In the context of high duty cycle and high flow, capture avoidance binary exponential back-off (CA-BEB) algorithm is used to further reduce the conflict probability for saving energy consumption. Based on the above two contexts, we propose an improved SMAC protocol, micro duty adaptive SMAC protocol (MDA-SMAC). Comparing the performance between MDA-SMAC protocol and SMAC protocol on the NS-2 simulation platform, the results show that, MDA-SMAC protocol performs better in terms of energy consumption, latency and effective throughput than SMAC protocol, especially in the condition of more crowded network traffic and more sensor nodes.

유두체가 손상된 흰쥐 수컷의 성 행동 (Sexual Behavior of Male Rats Following Damage to the Mammillary Bodies)

  • 유두체가 성 행동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알기 위하여 흰쥐 수컷 20마리를 두 무리로 나누어 한 무리에서는 유두체에 둔 전극을 거쳐 직류전류를 흘림으로써 유두체를 파괴하여 유두체군으로 하였으며, 다른 한 무리에서는 전류를 흘리기 전까지의 모든 조작을 유두체군에서와 마찬가지로하여 수술대조군으로 삼았다. 수술이 끝난 3주후 두 무리의 성 행동을 비교 관찰하였다. 실험결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 음부 압박을 하고 음경(陰莖)을 질내에 삽입하지 않은 오르기(mount)의 회수는 유두체군의 값이 수술대조군의 값보다 유의하게 적었다. 2) 질내 음경 삽입(intromission)을 동반한 오르기의 수효에 관해서는 두 무리 사이에 유의한 차이가 없었으나, 유두체군의 값이 수술대조군의 값에 비하여 다소 증가하는 경향이 있었다. 3) 질내 음경 삽입 유무를 가리지 않은 모든 오르기의 회수는 수술대조군에 비하여 유두체군에서 증가하는 경향은 있었으나 유의한 차이는 아니었다. 4) 첫 번째 질내 삽입에서부터 첫번째 사정시 까지의 시간 간격인 사정 지체시간(ejaculatory latency) 및 사정이 있은 때로부터 다음번 질내 음경 삽입 까지의 시간 간격인 사정-질내 삽입 시간 간격(postejaculatory interval)에 관하여는 두 무리 사이에 유의한 차이는 없었으나, 유두체군의 값이 수술대조군의 값에 비하여 다소 단축되는 경향이 있었다. 5) 그 밖에 관찰상자에 흰쥐 암컷을 넣은 다음 처음으로 질내 음경 삽입을 동반하거나 동반하지 않은 오르기를 하기 까지의 시간인 오르기 지체시간(mounting latency)과 관찰상자에 흰쥐 암컷을 넣은 후 처음으로 질내 음경 삽입을 하기까지의 시간인 질내 삽입 지체시간(intromission latency) 및 한 질내 삽입과 다음번 질내 삽입사이의 평균 시간인 질내 삽입 간 시간간격(interintromission period)에 관하여는 두 무리 사이에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 위의 결과로 미루어 유두체는 정상 동물에서 성 행동에 현저한 영향은 끼치지 않았으나 이 행동을 다소 억제하는 경향이 있는 것으로 추측된다. 그러나 이들 문제를 결정 짓기에 앞서 더 많은 연구가 요망된다.

뇌졸중 후 수면-각성장애 (Sleep-Wake Disturbance in Post-stroke Patients)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and related factors of sleep-wake disturbance (SWD) in Korean post-stroke patients. This study was the first to address post-stroke SWD in Korea using a structured questionnaire. Method: We investigated the prevalence of SWD and related factors including lesion location, stroke severity, presence of depression and fatigue. We assessed sleep-wake pattern including quality of sleep, sleep latency, wake episodes, wake time after sleep onset, daytime sleep episode and sleep time at daytime. Ninety stroke patients admitted to a university affiliated hospital in Seoul between the period September 2008 and January 2009 were included in the study. Result: Thirty five patients (38.9%) complained insomnia and 32 (35.6%) complained excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Quality of sleep (p=.000), sleep latency (p=.000) and total sleep time (p=.001) were significantly poorer in 16 patients with both insomnia and EDS than in the others. The related factors to insomnia were level of education (p=.030), depression (p=.007) and fatigue (p=.034), though related factors to EDS were stroke onset time (p=.049), stroke severity (p=.005), motor dysfunction (p=.035), dysphasia (p=.018), fatigue (p=.001) and lesion location (p=.019). Conclusion: Sleep-wake disturbance is a common problem in Korean stroke patients. Strategies to improve quality of sleep are urgently needed in the post-stroke patients.

ODM: A Neighbor Discovery Protocol Based on Optimal Discovery Model in WSNs

  • It is a challenging issue to improve the energy efficiency of neighbor discovery in WSNs. This paper proposes an optimal discovery model (ODM) for the first time. Based on the model, we investigate the influence of the relative size of two unequal active slots on the energy efficiency. ODM provides the energy optimal value of the length of the larger active slot at a given duty cycle. Other than existing methods, the worst-case latency bound of ODM is only one period. This is a subversive conclusion, because almost all other related methods are based on a wake-up schedule that contains several periods. We theoretically deduce that ODM can reduce worst-case discovery latency by 43.89% compared to Searchlight-Trim when their duty cycles are the same. The simulations verify the advantage of ODM.

Effects of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on Motor Recovery in Lower Extremities of Subacute Stage Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

  • The aim of this study was to investigate whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can improve motor recovery in the lower extremities of the patients with subacute stage spinal cord injury (SCI). This study was conducted with 19 subjects diagnosed with paraplegia because of SCI. The experimental group included 10 subjects who underwent active rTMS, and the control group included 9 subjects who underwent sham rTMS. The SCI patients in the experimental group underwent conventional rehabilitation therapy, and active rTMS was applied daily to the hotspot of the lesional hemisphere. The SCI patients in the control group underwent sham rTMS and conventional rehabilitation therapy. The participants in both the groups received therapy five days per week for six weeks. Latency, amplitude, and velocity were assessed before and after the six-week therapy period. A significant difference in post-treatment gains for the latency and velocity was observed between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences in the amplitude were observed between the two groups (p > 0.05). The results of this study indicate that rTMS may be beneficial in improving motor recovery in the lower extremities of subacute stage SCI patients.

Reduced-Pipelined Duty Cycle MAC Protocol (RP-MAC) for Wireless Sensor Network

  • Recently, the pipeline-forwarding has been proposed as a new technique to resolve the end-to-end latency problem of the duty-cycle MAC protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Some protocols based on this technique such as PMAC and PRI-MAC have shown an improvement not only in terms of reducing end-to-end latency but also in terms of reducing power consumption. In these protocols, however, the sensor nodes still waste a significant amount of energy for unnecessary idle listening during contention period of upstream nodes to check the channel activity. This paper proposes a new pipeline-forwarding duty-cycle MAC protocol, named RP-MAC (Reduced Pipelined duty-cycle MAC), which tries to reduce the waste of energy. By taking advantage of ACK mechanism and shortening the handshaking procedure, RP-MAC minimizes the time for checking the channel and therefore reduces the energy consumption due to unnecessary idle listening. When comparing RP-MAC with the existing solution PRI-MAC and RMAC, our QualNet-based simulation results show a significant improvement in term of energy consumption.
