Reverse engineering has been widely used for the shape reconstruction of an object without CAD data and the measurement of clay or wood models for the development of new products. To generate a surface from measured points by a laser scanner, typical steps include the scanning of a clay or wood model and the generation of manufacturing data like STL file. A laser scanner has a great potential to get geometrical data of a model for its fast measuring speed and higher precision. The data from a laser scanner are composed of many line stripes of points. A new approach to remove point data with Delaunay triangulation is introduced to deal with problems during reverse engineering process. The selection of group of triangles to be triangulated based on the angle between triangles is used for robust and reliable implementation of Delaunay triangulation as preliminary steps. Developed software enables the user to specify the criteria for the selection of group of triangles either by the angle between triangles or the percentage of triangles reduced. The time and error for handling point data during modelling process can be reduced and thus RP models with accuracy will be helpful to automated process.

Reverse engineering has been widely used for the shape reconstruction of an object without CAD data and it includes some steps such as scanning of a clay or wood model, and generating some manufacturing data in an STL file. A new approach to remove point data with Delaunay triangulation is introduced to deal with the size problems of STL file and the difficulties in the operation of RP process. This approach can be used to reduce a number of measuring data from laser scanner within a specified tolerance, thus it can avoid the time for handing point data during modeling process and the time for verifying and slicing STL model during RP process. Developed software enables the user to specify the criteria for the selection of group of triangles either by the angle between triangles or the percentage of triangles reduced, and thus RP models with accuracy will be helpful to automated process.
Modern distance sensing methods employ various measurement principles, including triangulation, time-of-flight, confocal, interferometric and frequency comb. Among them, the triangulation method, with a laser light source and an image sensor, is widely used in low-cost applications. We developed an omnidirectional two-dimensional (2D) distance sensor based on the triangulation principle for indoor floor mapping applications. The sensor has a range of 150-1500 mm with a relative resolution better than 4% over the range and 1% at 1 meter distance. It rotationally scans a compact one-dimensional (1D) distance sensor, composed of a near infrared (NIR) laser diode, a folding mirror, an imaging lens, and an image detector. We designed the sensor layout and configuration to satisfy the required measurement range and resolution, selecting easily available components in a special effort to reduce cost. We built a prototype and tested it with seven representative indoor wall specimens (white wallpaper, gray wallpaper, black wallpaper, furniture wood, black leather, brown leather, and white plastic) in a typical indoor illuminated condition, 200 lux, on a floor under ceiling mounted fluorescent lamps. We confirmed the proposed sensor provided reliable distance reading of all the specimens over the required measurement range (150-1500 mm) with a measurement resolution of 4% overall and 1% at 1 meter, regardless of illumination conditions.
A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. In this paper, we developed a surface profile measuring system and a profile measuring software for EGL conductor roll. For the profilemeter, we designed a linear guided control system with Laser displacement sensors and developed a 3-dimensional software. Additionally, the AC motor and AC motor driver were used to control the precise position of linear guide system. The measuring principle of the Laser sensor is optical triangulation method. Also, two Laser sensors were used to remove the disturbance and vibration effects of the linear guide system.

A new dimension measuring method for the measurement of diameter of an object has been developed using laser triangulation. The 3D data of an object was calculated from the 2 dimensional image information obtained by the laser stripe using the laser triangulation. The system that use existing theory can measure the diameter of hole not only in a normal plane but also ill an incline plane. However, in the existing theory, since the lens with fixed feral length was used, the area of measurement was fixed. The simplest way to solve this problem is to change distance between a CCD camera and object. Other way is to use a zoom lens having variable focal length. In this paper, the zoom lens with variable focal length was used. Therefore, we ran experiment with magnification that is optimized according to size of object using zoom lens with variable focal length.
A three dimensional body scanner for anthropomentric measurement has been developed. In this study, the slit laser beam projection method followed by digital image processing was used to provide accurate spatial data with the typical optical triangulation method to overcome the many difficulties in traditional in accurate and time-consuming tactic measurement method using rulers and gauges. Compared with other commercialized scanners. this system can obtain a relatively wide range of data at a much lower cost by the specially designed scanning process such as the simultaneous acquisition of vertical and horizontal body cross-section profiles.

The objective of this research is to develop an efficient reverse engineering method of 3-dimensional compound surfaces for raped prototyping process. As a first step, several image processing techniques were applied to the measured data obtained using laser scanner. And the boundary information of the compound surface were extracted to divide the surface into several separate regions. As a next step, the Delaunay triangulation method were applied to reconstruct the surface based on the measured data and the boundary information. Finally, the STL file were created for the rapid prototyping process. Required simulations and experiments were performed and the results were analyzed to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.
