In this study, two different technologies which can measure temperature simultaneously at many points are introduced. One is to use a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel within a single cable. The other is to use an optic fiber with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The difference between two technologies can be summarized as follows. A thermal sensor cable has a concept of 'point sensing' that can measure temperature at accurate position of a thermal sensor. So the accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the ability of the thermal sensor. Whereas optic fiber sensor has a concept of 'distributed sensing' because temperature is measured by ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes component intensities of Raman backscatter that is generated when laser pulse travels along an optic fiber. It's resolution is determined by measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is that application targets of two temperature measurement techniques are checked in technical and economical phases by examining the strength and weakness of them. Considering the functions and characteristics of two techniques, the thermal sensor cable will be suitable to apply to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within 300m distance. It is expected that the optic fiber sensor can be widely utilized at various fields (for example: pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection, power line monitoring etc.) which need an information of temperature distribution over relatively long distance.
Muscle vibration measurement has long been an unique scientific study, in general, and the direct reaction of animals to feel pain (algesia), either from vascular or muscle contraction, is a complex perceptual experience. Thus this paper proposes a way to measure animal algesia quantitatively, by measuring the changes in muscle vibration due to a pinprick on the surface of the skin of a Spodoptera litura larva. Using the laser optical triangulation measurement principle, along with a CMOS image sensor, linear laser, software analysis, and other tools, we quantify the subtle object point displacement, with a precision of up to $10{\mu}m$, for our chosen Spodoptera litura larva animal model, in which it is not easy to identify the tiny changes in muscle contraction dynamics with the naked eye. We inject different concentrations of formalin reagent (empty needle, 12% formalin, and 37% formalin) to obtain a variety of different muscle vibration frequencies as the experimental results. Because of the high concentrations of reagent applied, we see a high frequency shift of muscle vibration, which can be presented as pain indices, so that the algesia can be quantified.

A fiber optic sensor is prospective to be applied to structural health monitoring. Especially, a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is one of the most popular sensors for the structural health monitoring. The FBG sensor has several demodulation systems for tracking the shift of the Bragg wavelength. The dynamic bandwidth is dependent on the demodulation system. In this paper, the sensing mechanism is that the slope of the optical spectrum of FBG could be used as its sensitivity when the tunable laser shot the monochromatic laser wavelength at the highest slope point. In this technique, the high sensitivity is guaranteed even though the sensing range is limited. In an example of the application, the composite plate embedding a FBG sensor was manufactured by using an autoclave method and the above sensing mechanism was applied to the composite plate. Firstly, the natural frequencies of the plate were successfully measured by the FBG sensor during the impact hammer test. Secondly, a high-power speaker was used to force the plate to be vibrated at the specific frequency that was one of the natural frequencies. During the shaking, the FBG sensor measures the dynamic characteristics and ESPI was also used to measure the mode shape. From the two dynamic tests, the availability of the FBG sensor system and the ESPI was proven as a technique for measuring the dynamic characteristics of composite structure.
The tip of the flexible robot arm has to be controlled by the active control reducing vibration because it has residual vibration after getting to desired position. This paper presents an end-point position control of a 1-link flexible robot arm having tip mass by the PID control algorithm. The system is composed of a flexible arm with tip mass, dc servomotor and ballscrew mechanism under translational motion. The feedback signal composed of the tip displacement measured by laser sensor, estimated velocity and acceleration is used to control the base motion. Theoretical results are obtained by applying the Laplace transform and the numerical inversion method to the governing equations. After the flexible robot arm reaches to. the desired position, the residual vibration is controlled by the PID algorithm. This paper gives the simulation and experimental results of end-point responses according to changing tip-mass and arm length. And this algorithm shows good effects of reducing the residual vibration. Approximately, theoretical response is in good agreement with experimental one.

NC machines are generally used for machining operations because of their position accuracy, path accuracy, and machining reaction force. However, some NC machines require a very large space and are expensive. Recently, industrial articulated robot arms with large handling capability and wrist torque have been developed and the corresponding sensor technology has been improved. A machining robot for three-dimensional large curved objects was developed on the basis of an automatic-path-generation method. A self-position-compensation method with a laser displacement sensor was adopted for the six-axis robot developed, because the large articulated robot arms had poor position accuracy. An automatic-path-generation method using specific points was adopted to reduce the number of teaching points and time. In order to determine the proper machining conditions, various machining conditions such as tool rotation speed, cutting angle, cutting depth, and tool moving speed, were evaluated.
We build a local minimum free motion planning for mobile robots considering dynamic environments by simple sensor fusion assuming that there are unknown obstacles which can be detected only partially at a time by proximity sensors and can be cleaned up or moved slowly (dynamic environments). Potential field is used as a basic platform for the motion planning. To clear local minimum problem, the partial information on the obstacles should be memorized and integrated effectively. Sets of linked line segments (SLLS) are proposed as the integration method. Then robot's target point is replaced by virtual target considering the integrated sensing information. As for the main proximity sensors, we use laser slit emission and simple web camera since the system gives more continuous data information. Also, we use ultrasonic sensors as the auxiliary sensors for simple sensor fusion considering the advantages in that they give exact information about the presence of any obstacle within certain range. By using this sensor fusion, the dynamic environments can be dealt easily. The performance of our algorithm is validated via simulations and experiments.

In this paper, a laser-based non-contact load cell is newly developed for measuring forces in prestressed concrete tendons. First, alumina particles have been sprayed onto an empty load cell which has no strain gauges on it, and the layer has been used as a passive stress sensor. Then, the spectral shifts in fluorescence spectroscopy have been measured using a laser-based spectroscopic system under various force levels, and it has been found that the relation of applied force and spectral shift is linear in a lab-scale test. To validate the field applicability of the customized load cell, a full-scale prestressed concrete specimen has been constructed in a yard. During the field test, it was, however, found that the coating surface has irregular stress distribution. Therefore, the location of a probe has to be fixed onto the customized load cell for using the coating layer as a passive stress sensor. So, a prototype customized load cell has been manufactured, which consists of a probe mount on its casing. Then, by performing lab-scale uniaxial compression tests with the prototype load cell, a linear relation between compression stress and spectrum shift at a specific point where laser light had been illuminated has been detected. Thus, it has a high possibility to use the prototype load cell as a force sensor of prestressed concrete tendons.
A map of complex environment can be generated using a robot carrying sensors. However, representation of environments directly using the integration of sensor data tells only spatial existence. In order to execute high-level applications, robots need semantic knowledge of the environments. This research investigates the design of a system for recognizing objects in 3D point clouds of urban environments. The proposed system is decomposed into five steps: sequential LIDAR scan, point classification, ground detection and elimination, segmentation, and object classification. This method could classify the various objects in urban environment, such as cars, trees, buildings, posts, etc. The simple methods minimizing time-consuming process are developed to guarantee real-time performance and to perform data classification on-the-fly as data is being acquired. To evaluate performance of the proposed methods, computation time and recognition rate are analyzed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has efficiency in fast understanding the semantic knowledge of a dynamic urban environment.

Recent LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) sensor is used for scanning object around in real-time. This sensor can detect movement of the object and how it has changed. As the production cost of the sensors has been decreased, LiDAR begins to be used for various industries such as facility guard, smart city and self-driving car. However, LiDAR has a large input data size due to its real-time scanning process. So another way for processing a large amount of data are needed in LiDAR system because it can cause a bottleneck. This paper proposes edge computing to compress massive point cloud for processing quickly. Since laser's reflection range of LiDAR sensor is limited, multiple LiDAR should be used to scan a large area. In this reason multiple LiDAR sensor's data should be processed at once to detect or recognize object in real-time. Edge computer compress point cloud efficiently to accelerate data processing and decompress every data in the main cloud in real-time. In this way user can control LiDAR sensor in the main system without any bottleneck. The system we suggest solves the bottleneck which was problem on the cloud based method by applying edge computing service.
Stereo camera is drawing attention as an essential sensor for future intelligence robot system since it has the advantage of acquiring not only distance but also other additive information for an object. However, it cannot match correlated point on target image for low textured region or periodic patterned region such as wall of building or room. In this paper, we propose a stereo matching technique that increase the matching performance by fusing belief propagation stereo matching algorithm and local distance measurements of 2D-laser range finder in order to overcome this kind of limitation. The proposed technique adds laser measurements by referring quad-tree based segment information on to the local-evidence of belief propagation stereo matching algorithm, and calculates compatibility function by reflecting over-segmented information. Experimental results of the proposed method using simulation and real test images show that the distance information for some low textured region can be acquired and the discontinuity of depth information is preserved by using segmentation information.
