  • Recently UV laser is widely used to process micro parts using various materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics because it has a very high intensity at the focused spot area. It is generally known that there are still some difficulties for alumina($Al_2O_3$) ceramics to directly make micro patterns like holes and lines on the surface of working material using 355nm UV laser because the alumina has a very low absorption coefficient at that wavelength. But nowadays new alumna with nano-porous holes is developed and applied to advanced micro functional parts of IT, BT and BT industries. In this paper, we are going to show the mechanism of photo-thermal ablation for nano-porous ceramics. Inside hole there is a lot of multiple reflections along the depth of hole. Experimentally we can find the micro hole drilling and micro grooving on the surface of nano-porous alumina.

  • Hybrid material(ceramic+metal) processes were developed for micro filter using ceramics coating at metal filter surface by thermal spray method, micro hole drilling at ceramic coated filter surface by femtosecond laser, and fiber laser direct welding of ceramic and metal (SUS304, SM45C) by capillary effect. Thermal spray process was used for ceramic powders and metal filters. The used ceramic powders were $Al_2O_3+40TiO_2$(Metco 131VF) powder of maximum particle size $5{\mu}m$ and ${Al_2O_3}99+$(Metco 54NS) power of maximum particle size 45m. Ceramic coated filters using thermal spray method had a great influence on powder material, particle size and coating thickness but had a fine performance as a micro filter. CW fiber laser was used to drill the top ceramic layer and melt the bottom metal layer for joining applications.

  • Micro-EDM is widely used in metallic pattern, electronics, nuclear power and industry in the form of precision process. The improvement of Electro Discharge Machining has been on a steady progress since $19^{th}$ century. The technology has overcome the limits of the traditional precision process, enabling micro-EDM, micro electrolytic machining, micro drilling, micro punching and laser beam machining, which create versatile products with smaller sizes. What have been known about the major feature of Micro-EDM is high thermal energy so that their products are free from the hardness of their products as long as they are electrical conductor. However, each metal is suspected to have different features and natures even if they are created through the same procedure. In this thesis, the methodology of Micro-EDM and how to categorize them are explained. Also, the nature of the examined materials with surface shape and surface roughnes are analyzed. The results of the experiments are expected to understand surface roughness and workability of other materials for Micro-EDM.

  • Hole explosion behaviors were observed during drilling fine holes with laser beam on the LTCC green bar of $320{\mu}m$ thick after lamination of green sheets prepared by tape casting of thick film process. The incidence of these hole explosions was inversely proportional to hole sizes. The incidence of hole explosion was 20 % number of hole with the size of $60{\mu}m$ exploded for the UV radiation, while the explosion did not appear for hole sizes over $100{\mu}m$. To prevent hole explosion behavior during laser-drilling of fine holes, carbon black powder was added as an additive in the LTCC composition, which has superior thermal durability. As a consequence, hole explosion rate was suppressed to 0.8 % for the hole size of $50{\mu}m$ green sheet with the carbon black amount of 10 weight % and the laser power of 3 watt. Added carbon is thought to reduce the heat-affected region during laser drilling.

  • Recently, as the aged population grows around the world, many medical instruments, devices, and their fabrication processes are developing. Among the devices, a drug delivery stent is a good example for precision machining. Conventional drug delivery stent has problem of the remaining polymer because the drug is coated on the surface with it. If the drug is impregnated into the micro hole array on the stent surface, the polymer can be perfectly eliminated. Micro sized holes are generally fabricated by laser machining however, the fabricated holes do not have an enough aspect ratio to contain the drug or a good surface finish to deliver the stend to blood vessel tissue. To overcome these problems, we propose a vibration-assisted machining mechanism with PZT (Piezoelectric Transducers) for abrication of micro sized holes better. The results indicated that the burr size can be significantly decreased with vibration assisted in nanosecond pulse laser drilling test.

  • Laser-induced thermochemical wet etching of titanium in phosphoric acid has been investigated to examine the feasibility of this method fur fabrication of microstructures. Cutting, drilling, and milling of titanium foil were carried out while examining the influence of process parameters on etch width, etch depth, and edge straightness. Laser power, scanning speed of workpiece, and etchant concentration were chosen as major process parameters influencing on temperature distribution and reaction rate. Etch width increased almost linearly with laser power showing little dependence on scanning speed while etch depth showed wide variation with both laser power and scanning speed. A well-defined etch profile with good surface quality was obtained at high concentration condition. Fabrication of a hole, micro cantilever beam, and rectangular slot with dimension of tess than 100${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ has been demonstrated.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different-sized drill tips and laser irradiation times on the initial stability of orthodontic miniscrews placed in Er,Cr:YSGG-laser pre-drilled holes in an animal model. Materials and Methods: Laser pre-drilled holes were made in dog mandibular bone with an Er,Cr:YSGG laser using irradiation times of 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 seconds, and tip diameters of 0.4 and 0.6 mm. The maximum diameter and depth of the pre-drilled holes was measured with micro computed tomography. The maximum insertion torque was measured during placement the miniscrew. Result: Laser pre-drilled holes were conical shaped. The maximum diameter of pre-drilled holes increased with longer laser irradiation times (P>0.05) and larger tip diameters (P<0.05). The depth of pre-drilled holes increased with longer laser irradiation times and larger tip diameters (P<0.05). When the 0.4 mm tip, but not the 0.6 mm tip, was used, the insertion torque decreased significantly with longer laser irradiation times (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tip diameter impacted insertion torque more than irradiation time. It takes at least 9 seconds using a 0.6 mm tip to create a 0.8 mm diameter and 1.0 mm depth hole in thick cortical bone.

  • Generally, for the burrs formed in machining are irregular and very sharp in shape, it is usually very difficult to measure burr accurately. But, it is proved that precision measurement for micro burr using the conoprobe sensor by conoscopic holography method is possible. We developed 3D burr measurement system using this sensor. The system is composed of Conoscopic laser Sensor, X-Y table, controller and 3D measurement program. Some measurements using the developed system are applied to burrs formed in micro drilling and piercing.

  • Recently micromachining using DPSSL(Diode Pumped Solid State Laser) with 3rd harmonic wavelength is actively studied in laser machining area. Micromachining using DPSSL have outstanding advantages as UV source comparing with excimer laser in various aspect such a maintenance cost, maskless machining, high repetition rate and so on. In this study micro-drilling of PCB type substrate which consists of Cu-PI-Cu layer was performed using DPSS Nd:YAG laser(355nm, wavelength) in vector scanning method. Experimental and numerical method(Matlab simulation, FEM) are used to optimize process parameter and control machining depth. The man mechanism of this process is laser ablation. It is known that there is large gap between energy threshold of copper and that of PI. Matlab simulation considering energy threshold of material is performed to effect of duplication of pulse and FEM thermal analysis is used to predict the ablation depth of copper. This study could be widely used in various laser micromachining including via hole microdrilling of PCB, and micromachining of semiconductor components, medical parts and printer nozzle and so on.

  • The laser material processing has replaced a conventional material processing such as a welding, cutting, drilling and surface modification and so on. LTH(Laser Transformation Hardening) is one branch of the laser surface modification process. A lot of energy is needed for the LTH process to elevate workpiece surface to temperature of the austenite transformation($A_3$), which results from utilizing a beam with a larger size and lower power intensity comparatively. The absorptivity of the laser energy with respect to material depends on the wave length of a beam. This study is related to the surface hardening for the rod-shaped carbon steel by the high power diode laser(HPDL) whose beam absorptivity is better than conventional types of lasers such as $CO_2$ or Nd:YAG laser. Because a beam proceeds on the rotating specimen the pretreated hardened-phase can be tempered and softened by the overlapping between hardened tracks. Accordingly, the longitudinal hardness measurement and observation of the micro structure was carried out for an assessment of the hardening characteristics. In addition, a hardening characteristics as a hardenability of materials was compared in the point of view of the hardness distribution and hardening depth and width.
