LIBS has been attracting attention as an analytical method capable of real-time measurement without sample preparation. In this study, a Lab. scale LIBS device was fabricated to examine the applicability and reproducibility of LIBS in the analysis of chloride contents in mortar. The existing analysis method and LIBS analysis were performed simultaneously on the mortar test specimen with the chloride content adjusted. Compared to the chloride content condition of the mortar, the XRF and Potentiometric Titration results also showed a similar trend. As a result of LIBS analysis, chlorine ions were detected at a wavelength of 837.59 nm according to the chloride content condition. In order to improve the precision in various concentration ranges, the LIBS signal amplification of about 50 times through the electric field enhancement was implemented. Through the verification of the aqueous solution-based reproducibility, a high correlation between the LIBS signal strength and the Cl concentration was confirmed, and the possibility of applying LIBS to the durability diagnosis of concrete damage by chloride was confirmed.
To enhance the recycling rate of used metal resources, it is strongly desired to develop a metal sorting system that can automatically identify metal type from mixed metal scraps and sort them separately. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is a technique that enables real time classification of different metals based on multi-elemental and in-air analysis. In this work, we report the results of LIBS elemental analysis of field scrap samples acquired from a recycling company. By applying multivariate analysis, it was found that the LIBS signals of five different metals could be perfectly classified if surface contamination was removed. The classification accuracy degraded for LIBS signals including contaminant emission, which however could be overcome by performing the multivariate analysis using properly selected emission lines of higher correlation only. The significant improvement in classification accuracy and process speed by the selection of proper emission lines demonstrated the feasibility of LIBS technique as an industrial tool for metal scrap sorting.
Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is an simple analysis method for directly quantifying many kinds of soil micro-elements on site using a small size of laser without pre-treatment at any property of materials(solid, liquid and gas). The purpose of this study were to find an optimum condition of the LIBS measurement including wavelengths for quantifying soil elements, to relate spectral properties to the concentration of soil elements using LIBS as a simultaneous un-breakdown quantitative analysis technology, which can be applied for the safety assessment of agricultural products and precision agriculture, and to compare the results with a standardized chemical analysis method. Soil samples classified as fine-silty, mixed, thermic Typic Hapludalf(Memphis series) from grassland and uplands in Tennessee, USA were collected, crushed, and prepared for further analysis or LIBS measurement. The samples were measured using LIBS ranged from 200 to 600 nm(0.03 nm interval) with a Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm, with a beam energy of 25 mJ per pulse, a pulse width of 5 ns, and a repetition rate of 10 Hz. The optimum wavelength(${\lambda}nm$) of LIBS for estimating soil and plant elements were 308.2 nm for Al, 428.3 nm for Ca, 247.8 nm for T-C, 438.3 nm for Fe, 766.5 nm for K, 85.2 nm for Mg, 330.2 nm for Na, 213.6 nm for P, 180.7 nm for S, 288.2 nm for Si, and 351.9 nm for Ti, respectively. Coefficients of determination($r^2$) of calibration curve using standard reference soil samples for each element from LIBS measurement were ranged from 0.863 to 0.977. In comparison with ICP-AES(Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy) measurement, measurement error in terms of relative standard error were calculated. Silicon dioxide(SiO2) concentration estimated from two methods showed good agreement with -3.5% of relative standard error. The relative standard errors for the other elements were high. It implies that the prediction accuracy is low which might be caused by matrix effect such as particle size and constituent of soils. It is necessary to enhance the measurement and prediction accuracy of LIBS by improving pretreatment process, standard reference soil samples, and measurement method for a reliable quantification method.

The laser surface treatment of magnesium alloy was studied. $ZrO_2$ was used as sintering ceramics, and its corrosion resistance was verified. Appropriate laser parameters were proposed for homogeneous solidification of the sintered layer. The chemical compositions of the sintered layer were analyzed with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. $Na_2SO_4$ was used for a corrosion test, and the resistance of the sintered sample was confirmed. The microstructures of the sintered parts were also examined. The solidified grains on the top sintered surface were observed; however, reasonable fusion was obtained at the interface between the baseline and the ceramics. Laser surface treatment using $ZrO_2$ on magnesium alloy showed an improvement in corrosion resistance.
In this work, the application of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the composition analysis of thin $Cu(In,Ga)Se_2$ (CIGS) solar cell films ($1-2{\mu}m$ thickness) is reported. For the ablation of CIGS films, femtosecond (fs) laser (wavelength = 343nm, pulse width = 500fs) and nanosecond (ns) laser (wavelength = 266nm, pulse width = 5ns) were used under atmospheric environment. The emission spectra were detected with an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) spectrometer and multichannel CCD spectrometer for fs-LIBS and ns-LIBS, respectively. The calibration curves for fs-LIBS and ns-LIBS intensity ratios of Ga/Cu, In/Cu, and Ga/In were generated with respect to the concentration ratios measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

The quality of the ceramic sintered coating on a metal surface through laser surface treatment is affected by the laser irradiation pattern. Depending on the laser irradiation pattern, the amount of residual stress and heat applied or accumulated on the surface increases or decreases, affecting the thickness attained in the ceramic sintering area. When the heat energy accumulated in the sintering area is high, the ceramic and the metal alloy melt and sufficiently mix to form a homogeneous and thick bonding interface. In this study, the thermal energy accumulation in the region sintered with zirconia was controlled using four types of laser processing patterns. The thickness of the diffusion region is analyzed by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy of Mg-ZrO2 generated by laser sintering zirconia powder on the magnesium alloy surface. On the basis of the analysis of the Mg and Zr present in the sintered region through LIBS, the effect of the irradiation pattern on the sintering quality is confirmed by comparing and analyzing the heat and mass transfer tendency of the diffusion layer and the degree of diffusion according to the irradiation pattern. The derived diffusion coefficients differed by up to 9.8 times for each laser scanning pattern.

Small industrial appliances such as fan, audio, electric rice cooker mostly consist of ABS, PP, PS materials. In colored plastics, it is possible to classify by near infrared(NIR) spectroscopy, while in black plastics, it is very difficult to classify black plastic because of the characteristic of black material that absorbs the light. So the RBFNNs pattern classifier is introduced for sorting electrical and electronic waste plastics through LIBS(Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) spectrometer. At the preprocessing part, PCA(Principle Component Analysis), as a kind of dimension reduction algorithms, is used to improve processing speed as well as to extract the effective data characteristics. In the condition part, FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) clustering is exploited. In the conclusion part, the coefficients of linear function of being polynomial type are used as connection weights. PSO and 5-fold cross validation are used to improve the reliability of performance as well as to enhance classification rate. The performance of the proposed classifier is described based on both optimization and no optimization.
Shinning spot defects on galvanized steel sheets were studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Original Position Statistic Distribution Analysis (LIBSOPA) in this study. The research shows that the coating thickness of shinning spot defects which caused by the substrate defect is much lower than normal area, and when skin passed, the shinning spot defect area can not touch with skin pass roll which result in the surface of shinning spot is flat while normal area is rough. The different coating morphologies have different effects on the reflection of light, which cause the shinning spot defects more brighter than normal area.
Time-resolved laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (TRELIBS) has been developed and applied to the qualitative analysis of the component materials of nuclear power plant. The alloy samples used in this work were carbon steels (A106 Gr. B; A336 P11; A335 P22), stainless steels (type 304; type 316) and inconel alloys (Inconel 600; Inconel 690; Inconel 800). Carbon steels can be individually distinguished by the intensity ratio of chromium to iron and molybdenum to iron emission lines observed at the wavelength raging from 485 to 575 nm. Type 316 stainless steel can be easily differentiated from type 304 by identification of the molybdenum emission lines at an emission wavelength ranging from 485 to 575 nm: type 304 does not give any molybdenum emission lines, but type 316 does. The inconel alloys can be individually distinguished by the intensity ratio of Cr/Fe and Ni/Fe emission lines at the wavelength raging from 420 to 510 nm. TRELIBS has been proved to be a powerful analytical technique for direct analysis of alloys due to its non-destructivity and simplicity.

In this study, the design methodology of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks is developed with the aid of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and also applied to the practical plastics sorting system. To identify black plastics such as ABS, PP, and PS, RBFNNs classifier as a kind of intelligent algorithms is designed. The dimensionality of the obtained input variables are reduced by using PCA and divided into several groups by using K-means clustering which is a kind of clustering techniques. The entire data is split into training data and test data according to the ratio of 4:1. The 5-fold cross validation method is used to evaluate the performance as well as reliability of the proposed classifier. In case of input variables and clusters equal to 5 respectively, the classification performance of the proposed classifier is obtained as 96.78%. Also, the proposed classifier showed superiority in the viewpoint of classification performance where compared to other classifiers.
