Thin solid film systems polarizing beam splitter and disk amplifier used in the high power laser system ({{{{ lambda }}0=1060nm) are designed by computer aided optimization technique. Extinction ratio of designed polarizing beam splitter for incidence angle 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 55.60$^{\circ}$ are 1:93, 1:895, 1:1991. respectively. Maximum reflectance of designed thin film system of disk amplifier is less than 3% for pumping band (500-900nm) and 0.15% for laser beam. Further, SiO film chosen as one of the suitable thin films in the high power laser system is prepared by the sol=-gel process which gives high damage threshold. When the withdrawal speed is 6.15cm/min -16.62 cm/min and the mixing ratio is in the range of 1 mol (ethylsilicate): 4-8mol(ethylalcohol) : 2mol(water), the thickness of deposited film is in the range of 500{{{{ ANGSTROM }}-1500{{{{ ANGSTROM }}.
The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degrees intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high temperature and high pressure. The eight converged flames compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs with observation area of 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The changes of pressure and temperature during soot formation are controlled by varying the initial charging pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping the temperature and raising the pressure at a constant equivalence ratio, and the soot yield in turbulent combustion decreases as compared with that in laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss for laminar combustion.
A novel integrated laser, that is, a distributed reflector laser diode integrated with an electroabsorption modulator, is proposed to improve the output efficiency, single-mode stability, and chirp. The proposed laser can be realized using the selective metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy technique (that is, control of the width of the insulating mask), and its fabrication process is almost the same as the conventional electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) process except for the asymmetric coupling coefficient structure along the cavity. For our analysis, an accurate time-domain transfer-matrix-based laser model is developed. Based on this model, we perform steady-state and large-signal analyses. The performances of the proposed laser, such as the output power, extinction ratio, and chirp, are compared with those of the EML. Under 10-Gbps NRZ modulation, we can obtain a 30% higher output power and about 50% lower chirp than the conventional EML. In particular, the simulation results show that the chirp provided by the proposed laser can appear to have a longer wavelength side at the leading edge of the pulse and a shorter wavelength side at the falling edge.

The temperature and soot particle measurement technique in a laminar diffusion flame has been studied to investigate the characteristics of soot particle with temperature using a co-flow burner. The temperature distribution in the flame were measured by rapid insertion of a R-type thermocouple and the soot particles by LEM/LIS techniques. In these measurement, soot volume fraction, number density and soot diameters were analyzed experimentally. As a results, the spacial distributions of particle volume fraction, soot diameter, and number density are mapped throughout the flame using the Rayleigh theory for the scattering of light by particles. A laser extinction method was used to measure the soot volume fraction and laser induced scattering method was used to measure the soot particle diameter and number density. Also, we measured temperature without the effect of soot particles attached to the thermocouple junction, which is close to the nozzle. In this result, we found that upstream zone has a unstable flowing in co-flow diffusion flame and the y-axis temperature of flame has a uniform temperature distribution in the most soot volume fraction zone.

A PLLIF (Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique has been known to be a useful tool for the measurement of the spray patterns for various spray injectors because it can obtain two-dimensional images with high spatial resolutions without any intrusion on the spray field. In case of dense spray, however, the secondary emission as well as the extinction of an incident laser beam or a fluorescence signal can cause errors in quantifying a mass distribution. Unfortunately, a like-doublet injector which has a dense spray zone at the center may not be a good example or the application of the PLLIF technique. Therefore, we took PLLIF data for the like-doublet injector with a 12 bit color CCD camera by varying laser power, and then assessed their accuracy by comparing with the data obtained with a mechanical patternator and a PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). The experimental results showed that the gray level of fluorescence signal increases nonlinearly due to a secondary emission at the dense spray zone but this nonlinearity can be avoided by reducing the incident laser beam power. In addition, the mass flux distribution of the spray could be obtained by using the mass concentration data from PLLIF technique and the velocity profiles of liquid drops, and this distribution showed good agreement with that of mechanical pattemator. Therefore, it is possible that the PLLIF technique can be successfully applied to finding the mass distributions of like-doublet injectors.

The effect of pressure on soot formation in premixed propane-air combustion is investigated at high pressures over the pressure range of 1 to 5 MPa by using a specially designed constant volume combustion bomb. The combustiom chamber of disk type with eight spark plugs located on the circumference at an interval of 45deg is 100mm in diameter by 14mm thick. The end gases are compressed to high pressures by the eight converging flames. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique, and the burnt gas temperature during the same period is measured by the two-color method. It is found that the soot yield rises with 50 to 100% for the respective equivalence ratio range of 1.9-2.2 at an interval of 0.1 when the combustion pressure is increased from 1 to 5 MPa, and that the turbulent flames decrease in the soot yield as compared with the laminar flames because the burnt gas temperatures increase with the drop of heat loss.

DME(Di-Methyl Ehter, $CH_3OCH$) is currently attracting worldwide attention due to its environmentally friendly characteristics. Until now it was researched as a major alternative fuel of diesel automobile because it is a clean fuel producing low soot. Therefore, in this study, in order to investigate the effect of DME mixing on number density and size of soot particle, DME has been mixed in opposed-flow ethylene diffusion flame with the mixture ratios 5%, 14% and 30%. A laser extinction/scattering technique has been adopted to measure the volume fraction, number density, and size of soot particles. The experimental results showed that the soot concentration of mixture flames with the mixture ratios 5% and 14% produces soot more, even though that of 30% was decreased. This means that even though DME has been known to be a clean fuel for soot formation, the mixing of DME in diffusion flame of ethylene, where acetylene maintains high concentration in soot formation regions, could produce enhanced production of soot.
The exciplex fluorescence technique with the TMPD (tetamethyl-Ρ-phenylene-diamine) / naphthalene dopant system was applied in a combustion-type constant-volume spray chamber. A detailed set of calibration experiments has been performed in order to quantify the TMPD fluorescence signal. It has been demonstrated that the TMPD fluorescence intensity was directly proportional to concentration, was independent of the chamber pressure, and was not sensitive to quenching by either water vapor or carbon dioxide. Using a dual heated-jet experiment, the temperature dependence of TMPD fluorescence up to 1000 K was measured. The temperature field in the spray images was determined using a simple mixing model, and an iterative solution method was used to determine the concentration and temperature field including the additional effects of the laser sheet extinction. The integrated fuel vapor concentration compared favorably with the measured amount of injected fuel when all of the liquid fuel had evaporated.

Experiments were performed with double-concentric diffusion flame(DDF) in order to investigate the characteristics of soot formation and temperature distributions. The flame size and shape of the DDF are similar to those of the well-known normal co-flow diffusion flame(WF), except the formation of a tiny inverse flame near the central tube exit. A laser light extinction technique was used to measure the soot volume fractions. The temperature distributions in the flame were measured by rapid insertion of a R-type thermocouple. Soot concentrations along the flame axis of the DDF were higher than those of the NDF. However, the maximum soot volume fraction of the DDF along the periphery of the flame was lower than that of the NDF. It is mainly due to the effect of nitrogen-dilution from the inner air. Measured temperature distribution explains these trends of soot concentration. The temperature along the flame axis was also higher in DDF than that of the NDF. However, the flame temperatures at the flame front of the two flames were almost same regardless of the inner flame. This phenomenon means that the inverse flame inside the DDF did not affect on the flame structure including the temperature and soot concentration, except the region around the flame axis.
