The process design for large-scale ring rolling of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was performed by calculation method, processing map approach and FEM simulation. The ring rolling design includes geometry design and optimization of process variables. The calculation method was used to make geometry design such as initial billet and blank sizes, and final rolled ring shape. A commercial FEM code, SHAPE-RR was used to simulate the effect of process variables in ring rolling on the distribution of the internal state variables such as strain, strain rate and temperature. In order to predict the forming defects during ring rolling and the formation of over-heating above $\beta$-transus temperature due to deformation heating, the process-map approach based on Ziegler's instability criterion was used with FEM simulation. Finally, an optimum process design to obtain sound Ti-6Al-4V rings without forming defects was suggested through combined approach of Ziegler's instability map and FEM simulation results.

Saving energy is a big challenge for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), which becomes even more critical in large-scale WSNs. Most energy waste is communication related, such as collision, overhearing and idle listening, so the schedule-based access which can avoid these wastes is preferred for WSNs. On the other hand, clustering technique is considered as the most promising solution for topology management in WSNs. Hence, providing interference-free clustering is vital for WSNs, especially for large-scale WSNs. However, schedule management in cluster-based networks is never a trivial work, since it requires inter-cluster cooperation. In this paper, we propose a clustering method, called Interference-Free Clustering Protocol (IFCP), to partition a WSN into interference-free clusters, making timeslot management much easier to achieve. Moreover, we model the clustering problem as a multi-objective optimization issue and use non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II to solve it. Our proposal is finally compared with two adaptive clustering methods, HEED-CSMA and HEED-BMA, demonstrating that it achieves the good performance in terms of delay, packet delivery ratio, and energy consumption.

Wi-Fi Access Point (AP) optimization approaches are used in indoor positioning systems for signal coverage enhancement, as well as positioning precision improvement. Although the huge power consumption of the AP optimization forms a serious problem due to the signal coverage requirement for large-scale indoor environment, the conventional approaches treat the problem of power consumption independent from the design of indoor positioning systems. This paper proposes a new Fast Water-filling algorithm Group Power Constraint (FWA-GPC) based Wi-Fi AP optimization approach for indoor positioning in which the power consumed by the AP optimization is significantly considered. This paper has three contributions. First, it is not restricted to conventional concept of one AP for one candidate AP location, but considered spare APs once the active APs break off. Second, it utilizes the concept of water-filling model from adaptive channel power allocation to calculate the number of APs for each candidate AP location by maximizing the location fingerprint discrimination. Third, it uses a fast version, namely Fast Water-filling algorithm, to search for the optimal solution efficiently. The experimental results conducted in two typical indoor Wi-Fi environments prove that the proposed FWA-GPC performs better than the conventional AP optimization approaches.

With rapid growth in the complexity of large scale engineering systems, the application of multidisciplinary analysis and design optimization (MDO) in the engineering design process has garnered much attention. MDO addresses the challenge of integrating several different disciplines into the design process. Primary challenges of MDO include computational expense and poor scalability. The introduction of a distributed, collaborative computational environment results in better utilization of available computational resources, reducing the time to solution, and enhancing scalability. SORCER, a Java-based network-centric computing platform, enables analyses and design studies in a distributed collaborative computing environment. Two different optimization algorithms widely used in multidisciplinary engineering design-VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP-are implemented on a SORCER grid. VTDIRECT95, a Fortran 95 implementation of D. R. Jones' algorithm DIRECT, is a highly parallelizable derivative-free deterministic global optimization algorithm. QNSTOP is a parallel quasi-Newton algorithm for stochastic optimization problems. The purpose of integrating VTDIRECT95 and QNSTOP into the SORCER framework is to provide load balancing among computational resources, resulting in a dynamically scalable process. Further, the federated computing paradigm implemented by SORCER manages distributed services in real time, thereby significantly speeding up the design process. Part 1 covers SORCER and the algorithms, Part 2 presents results for aircraft panel design with curvilinear stiffeners.

Stochastic optimization methods have been extensively studied for structural optimization in recent decades. In this study, a novel algorithm named the CA-SA method, is proposed for topology optimization of steel double-layer grid structures. The CA-SA method is a hybridized algorithm combining the Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm and the Cellular Automata (CA) method. In the CA-SA method, during the initial iterations of the SA algorithm, some of the preliminary designs obtained by SA are placed in the cells of the CA. In each successive iteration, a cell is randomly chosen from the CA. Then, the "local leader" (LL) is determined by selecting the best design from the chosen cell and its neighboring ones. This LL then serves as the leader for modifying the SA algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed CA-SA algorithm, two square-on-square steel double-layer grid structures are considered, with discrete cross-sectional areas. These numerical examples demonstrate the superiority of the CA-SA method over SA, and other meta-heuristic algorithms reported in the literature in the topology optimization of large-scale skeletal structures.

In recent years, the growing interest in off-site construction has led to factories scaling up their manufacturing and production processes in the construction sector. Consequently, continuous large-scale site monitoring in low-variability environments, such as prefabricated components production plants (precast concrete production), has gained increasing importance. Although many studies on computer vision-based site monitoring have been conducted, challenges for deploying this technology for large-scale field applications still remain. One of the issues is collecting and transmitting vast amounts of video data. Continuous site monitoring systems are based on real-time video data collection and analysis, which requires excessive computational resources and network traffic. In addition, it is difficult to integrate various object information with different sizes and scales into a single scene. Various sizes and types of objects (e.g., workers, heavy equipment, and materials) exist in a plant production environment, and these objects should be detected simultaneously for effective site monitoring. However, with the existing object detection algorithms, it is difficult to simultaneously detect objects with significant differences in size because collecting and training massive amounts of object image data with various scales is necessary. This study thus developed a large-scale site monitoring system using edge computing and a small-object detection system to solve these problems. Edge computing is a distributed information technology architecture wherein the image or video data is processed near the originating source, not on a centralized server or cloud. By inferring information from the AI computing module equipped with CCTVs and communicating only the processed information with the server, it is possible to reduce excessive network traffic. Small-object detection is an innovative method to detect different-sized objects by cropping the raw image and setting the appropriate number of rows and columns for image splitting based on the target object size. This enables the detection of small objects from cropped and magnified images. The detected small objects can then be expressed in the original image. In the inference process, this study used the YOLO-v5 algorithm, known for its fast processing speed and widely used for real-time object detection. This method could effectively detect large and even small objects that were difficult to detect with the existing object detection algorithms. When the large-scale site monitoring system was tested, it performed well in detecting small objects, such as workers in a large-scale view of construction sites, which were inaccurately detected by the existing algorithms. Our next goal is to incorporate various safety monitoring and risk analysis algorithms into this system, such as collision risk estimation, based on the time-to-collision concept, enabling the optimization of safety routes by accumulating workers' paths and inferring the risky areas based on workers' trajectory patterns. Through such developments, this continuous large-scale site monitoring system can guide a construction plant's safety management system more effectively.
The aggregation on linear large-scale dynamic systems is examined in this paper and a "two-step" approach is proposed. In this procedure, the aggregated system consists of two subsystems. The first subsystem represents aggregation through the retainment of dominant eigenvalues of the original system, leading to a first approximation of the desired output of the original system. The purpose of augmenting it with a second subsystem is to provide an estimation of the error on the first approximation, thus permitting a second correction to the output approximation and resulting in an output approximation of greater accuracy. Optimization techniques are discussed for the determination of unknown parameters in the aggregated system. These techniques use minimization principles of certain suitable performance indices and are developed for both single input-single output and multiple input-multiple output system. Numerical examples illustrating these procedures are given and the results are compared with those obtained using existing methods. Finally, a pharmacokinetics problem is studied from the aggregation point of view.
This paper presents a fast and effective methodology for service restoration in large-scale distribution systems. The service restoration problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem and requires the fast computation time and superior solution because the more unfaulted out-of-service area should be restored as soon as possible. The proposed methodology is designed to consider the fast computation time and priority service restoration by dijkstra algorithm and fuzzy theory in large-scale distribution systems. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed on a 26-bus and 140-bus system.
