As online commerce increases, the construction of large logistics buildings worldwide is exploding. Most of these buildings have the characteristics of long span and heavy loaded and use precast concrete components, a pin joint structure, for rapid construction. However, due to construction safety and structural stability requirements, the pin joint structure has many limitations in terms of the erection of the PC member, which increases the time and cost. A structural frame connected with steel joints between precast concrete components, called a SMART frame, has been developed, which addresses these constraints and risks. However, the effect of the appllication of a SMART frame on the time aspect has not been analysed. The study is a time reduction effect analysis of a SMART frame for long span and heavy loaded logistics buildings. For this study, the authors select a case site erected using existing PC components, and compare the time reduction with the SMART frame erection simulations. Through this analysis, it was found that a time reduciton about 4 months, approximately 48% of the conventional PC installation period could be achieved. If the SMART frame is applied when carrying out future large-scale logistics building projects, it can be expected to have the effect of significantly shortening the construction period compared to the conventional method.
A large number of low-rise buildings experienced serious roof covering failures under strong wind while few suffered structural damage. Clay and concrete tiles are two main kinds of roof covering. For the tile roof system, few researches were carried out based on Finite Element (FE) analysis due to the difficulty in the simulation of the interface between the tiles and the roof sheathing (the bonding materials, foam or mortar). In this paper, the FE analysis of a single clay or concrete tile with foam-set or mortar-set were built with the interface simulated by the equivalent nonlinear springs based on the mechanical uplift and displacement tests, and they were expanded into the whole roof. A detailed wind tunnel test was carried out at Tongji University to acquire the wind loads on these two kinds of roof tiles, and then the test data were fed into the FE analysis. For the purpose of validation and calibration, the results of FE analysis were compared with the full-scale performance ofthe tile roofs under simulated strong wind impact through one-of-a-kind Wall of Wind (WoW) apparatus at Florida International University. The results are consistent with the WoW test that the roof of concrete tiles with mortar-set provided the highest resistance, and the material defects or improper construction practices are the key factors to induce the roof tiles' failure. Meanwhile, the staggered setting of concrete tiles would help develop an interlocking mechanism between the tiles and increase their resistance.
The effect of the steel pipe member joint on the design performance of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed through the comparing full-scale experiment and numerical analysis. The design performance of the greenhouse is generally evaluated through numerical analysis, but it is rare to consider the characteristics of the connections or joints of the members. In this study, the effect of the column-gutter beam-rafter-wind break wall joint on the design performance of the whole structure of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed. The numerical results with assuming that the member joint are rigid condition were compared with the full-scale load test results using member joints used in the field. The stiffness of the entire structure was compared using the load-displacement relationship and the change of the load sharing ratio that the main members such as column, rafters, and wind break wall was analysed. The results of the load test were about 40% larger than the numerical result and the member stress was more than twice as large as those of the loaded columns. In order to increase the reliability of the design performance of the greenhouse, it is necessary to develop a numerical analysis model which can consider the characteristics of various joints.

This study was conducted in 8.2m wide single-span greenhouse to investigate the effect of presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joint and foundation conditions on greenhouse structural performance. Structural performance was evaluated by static loading test using the structural performance evaluation system for single-span greenhouse. The measured displacement was compared with the predicted result by numerical analysis. The displacement of each measurement location showed a significant difference regardless of the conditions of the foundation and presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joint. Compared to the hinge conditions, the difference in structural performance of the greenhouse in the fixed conditions was seen to be relatively large. The difference in structural performance according to presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joints, the lateral stiffness of the joint was 8.1% greater.

Since 2007, the government has been actively working to enhance the quality of public buildings, as evidenced by initiatives like the "National Basic Architecture Plan" and, since 2014, the "Building Service Industry Promotion Act." Despite these efforts, educational facilities continue to experience more frequent defects compared to large-scale apartment constructions. This study aims to analyze the primary causes of crack formation in educational facilities, employing the 2×2 MATRIX and IPA techniques to develop efficient crack prediction models. The research includes a review of relevant literature and an analysis of data from the Office of Education spanning 2019 to 2021 to pinpoint significant defects. Subsequently, 15 factors related to crack defects were identified through surveys and expert consultations. The 2×2 Matrix analysis of these factors highlighted the challenges in work processes and the effectiveness of preventative measures for crack formation, focusing on key areas for improvement. The findings from this study are anticipated to significantly contribute to the prevention and management of structural cracks in educational facilities, ensuring their long-term integrity.

Structure behaviors resulting from an earthquake are experimentally simulated mainly through a shaking table test. As for large-scale structures, however, size effects over a miniature may make it difficult to assess actual behaviors properly. To address this problem, research on the hybrid simulation is being conducted actively. This method is to implement numerical analysis on framework members that affect the general behavior of the structure dominantly through an actual scale experiment and on the rest parts by applying the substructuring technique. However, existing studies on hybrid simulation focus mainly on Slow experimental methods, which are disadvantageous in that it is unable to assess behaviors close to the actual level if material properties change depending on the speed or the influence of inertial force is significant. The present study aims to establish a Real-time hybrid simulation system capable of excitation based on the actual time history and to verify its performance and applicability. The hybrid simulation system built up in this study utilizes the ATS Compensator system, CR integrator, etc. in order to make the target displacement the same with the measured displacement on the basis of MATLAB/Simulink. The target structure was a 2-span bridge and an RC pier to support it was produced as an experimental model in order for the shaking table test and Slow and Real-time hybrid simulations. Behaviors that result from the earthquake of El Centro were examined, and the results were analyzed comparatively. In comparison with the results of the shaking table test, the Real-time hybrid simulation produced more similar maximum displacement and vibration behaviors than the Slow hybrid simulation. Hence, it is thought that the Real-time hybrid simulation proposed in this study can be utilized usefully in seismic capacity assessment of structural systems such as RC pier that are highly non-linear and time-dependent.

Pipelines subjected to ground movement would be easily exposed to large-scale deformation. Since such deformations may cause the pipeline failure, it is important to ensure the safety of pipelines in various operation conditions. However, crack in weld metal have been considered as one of the main causes that can deteriorate the structural integrity of the pipeline. For this reason, the structural integrity of the pipe containing the crack in the weld should be obtained. In order to assess cracked pipe, J-integral and crack-tip opening displacement(CTOD) have been applied widely as the elastic-plastic fracture mechanics parameters representing crack driving force. In this study, engineering solutions to calculate the J-integral and CTOD of pipes with a circumferential outer surface crack in the weld are proposed. For this purpose, 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element(FE) analyses have been performed considering the effect of overmatch and width of weld. The shape of the weld was simplified to I-groove, and axial displacement was employed as for loading condition. Based on FE results, the effects of crack size, material properties and width of weldment on J-integral and CTOD were investigated. Additionally, the J-integral and CTOD for I-groove were compared with those for V-groove to examine the effects of the weld shape, and a proportionality coefficient of J-integral and CTOD was calculated from the results of this paper.

In centralized control system, complicated control systems including sensors, power supply and dampers should be required to satisfy the target response of large-scale structures. The practical applications of the centralized control system, however, is very difficult due to high order finite element model of structures, uncertainty of models, and limitations of the excitation system. In this study, the decentralized response-dependent MR damper of which magnetic field is automatically modulated according to the displacement or velocity transferred to the damper without any sensing and computing systems. this decentralized response-dependent MR damper are investigated according to the ranges of relative magnitude between the control force of MR damper and the story shear force of structures by nonlinear time history analysis. Finally, its performance is compared with centralized LQR algorithm which is used in general centralized control theory for a three story building structure.

Considering the contribution of industrial facilities to the national economy, securing operability against earthquakes is very important. However, the basic concept of current seismic design mainly allows ductile behavior of facilities against large-scale earthquakes and only considers structural safety for the purpose of preventing collapse. In order to secure the operability of industrial facilities, the level of seismic performance to maintain operability may vary depending on the structural behavior characteristics of the industrial facility, and a seismic design method is needed to satisfy this. In this study, a ground storage tanks Nonlinear seismic behavior characteristics(R-μ-T) were analyzed through nonlinear response history analysis, and based on this, a new reliability-based, performance-based seismic design method was proposed.
Crack detection in structures plays a vital role in ensuring their safety, durability, and reliability. Traditional crack detection methods sometimes need significant manual inspections, which are laborious, expensive, and prone to error by humans. Deep learning algorithms, which can learn intricate features from large-scale datasets, have emerged as a viable option for automated crack detection recently. This study presents an in-depth review of crack detection methods used till now, like image processing, traditional machine learning, and deep learning methods. Specifically, it will provide a comparative analysis of crack detection methods using deep learning, aiming to provide insights into the advancements, challenges, and future directions in this field. To facilitate comparative analysis, this study surveys publicly available crack detection datasets and benchmarks commonly used in deep learning research. Evaluation metrics employed to check the performance of different models are discussed, with emphasis on accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. Moreover, this study provides an in-depth analysis of recent studies and highlights key findings, including state-of-the-art techniques, novel architectures, and innovative approaches to address the shortcomings of the existing methods. Finally, this study provides a summary of the key insights gained from the comparative analysis, highlighting the potential of deep learning in revolutionizing methodologies for crack detection. The findings of this research will serve as a valuable resource for researchers in the field, aiding them in selecting appropriate methods for crack detection and inspiring further advancements in this domain.
