The study area is located in the Central Bransfield Basin, Antarctica. To analyze the morphology of seafloor, structure of basement, and seismic stratigraphy of the sedimentary layers, we have acquired, processed, and interpreted the multi-channel seismic data. The northwest-southeastern back-arc extension dramatically changes seafloor morphology, volcanic and fault distribution, and basin structure along the spreading ridges. The northern continental shelf shows a narrow, steep topography. In contrast, the continental shelf or slope in the south, which is connected to the Antarctic Peninsula, has a gentle gradient. Volcanic activities resulted in the formation of large volcanos and basement highs near the spreading center, and small-scale volcanic diapirs on the shelf. A very long, continuous normal fault characterizes the northern shelf, whereas several basinward synthetic faults probably detach into the master fault in the south. Four transfer faults, the northwest-southeastern deep-parallel structures, controlled the complex distributions of the volcanos, normal faults, depocenters, and possibly hydrocarbon provinces in the study area. They have also deformed the basement structure and depositional pattern. Even though the Bransfield Basin was believed to be formed in the Late Cenozoic (about 4 Ma), the hydrocarbon potential may be very high due to thick sediment accumulation, high organic contents, high heat flow resulted from the active tectonics, and adequate traps.

Loading time and loading environment of the Dokdo seamounts were studied from flexure model and VGP(Virtual Geomagnetic Pole) determined by gravity and magnetic data. In spite of their similarity in size. a large difference about 50 mGal between gravity anomaly peaks of Dokdo and the Isabu Tablemount suggests different compensation degrees. Flexural modeling results show that the flexural rigidity(effective elastic thickness) of lithosphere for Dokdo is stronger(thicker) than that for the Isabu Tablemount. Also, it implies that the age of lithosphere at the time of loading of the Isabu Tablemount may be younger than that of Dokdo. Magnetic anomalies occur complicated over the Dokdo seamounts. Paleomagnetism was studied from VGP estimated by the least square and the seminorm magnetization methods with 1500 m upward continued magnetic anomalies. Age dating of Dokdo from previous study, flexural modeling, VGP, and geomagnetic polarity time scale suggest that after the cease of spreading in the Ulleung Basin, the Isabu Tablemount was formed first in normal polarity interval and followed by Dokdo. Also, they indicate that the fist large eruption of Dokdo was in normal polarity interval and the second large eruption in reversed polarity interval. The Simheungtaek Tablemount was formed in normal polarity interval between the formations of the Isabu Tablemount and Dokdo. These loading times for the Dokdo seamounts show a good coherence with the compressive stress period after the end of the opening of the East Sea. The Dokdo seamounts probably was caused by volcanism associated with the compressive stress.
Water Management Resilience Index (WMRI) was developed as a policy measure of adaptability to withstand water stresses and to set up water management strategies mainly in mid-small scale tributaries, and then evaluated on 117 sub-basins in South Korea. The index consists of 3 sub-indices such as vulnerability, robustness and redundancy sub-indices, each including indicators of 3 sectors: water use, flood mitigation, and river environment. Total number of indicators selected for the index was 31. Taking into account the stream order and control capability of river flow discharge, sub-basins were categorized into 3: 1 for mainstreams of lower large dams, 2 and 3 for tributaries, respectively without and with flow discharge regulation. As a result of the evaluation, resilience index scores in Category 2 and 3 are much lower than that of Category 1, especially with very poor score of redundancy. Although there was no significant difference between mainstream and tributaries in vulnerability and robustness sub-indices, results of redundancy sub-index in tributaries were lower than those in mainstream. Thus, it is conceived that the variety of water management schemes should be considered to improve their resilience in the face of future uncertainty. Addressing comprehensive stability of river basin against internal and external impacts, WMRI in this study can also be used for the prioritization of water management plans.
Generally it was known that member forces in the earthquake resistant design is lower than those in the general design. But it is not true in cases of water treatment underground structures, which is different in each case like water treatment plant, sedimentation basin, and utility-pipe conduit. Also, looking at the scale of earthquakes that have recently occurred in Korea, large-scale earthquakes are frequent, so when the magnitude of the design seismic force increases, it is necessary to investigate the seismic behavior of the water treatment underground structure and to deal with it. In this study the change rate of member forces was investigated by the change of design load factor (earthquake acceleration design criteria), earth depth, underground water level. The pseudo-static analysis and response displacement method was applied, and various analyzes were conducted depending on the ground water and soil depth. The proposed formula in this study will be efficient when the earthquake design code of water treatment underground structures is revised.
Rotating right cylinder of rigid sloping boundaries(top-bottom) is filled with two-layered fluid. External fluid which has the same density as the lower-layer is pumped through the rim boundary at the bottom, and this induces uniform vertical velocity in the interior that produces the Sverdrup type motion such as southward flowing western boundary current with northward interior horizontal motion. The rigid sloping upper boundary meets with lower layer to simulate so called "polar front", and the upper-layer motion influenced by the lower-layer flow has been observed. Barotropic motion in the western part of the basin while baroclinic motion in the eastern half is always present. In particular, both southward flowing eastern boundary flow and western boundary flow meets near the western wall and it induces northward western boundary flow to separate from the boundary With increased ${\beta}$-effect on the upper0layer the width of western boundary decreases and the separated western boundary flow moves into the interior to form an eddy-like motion. Baroclinic Rosebay wave clearly observed in the easter boundary slowly propagates to the west but it seems to be decayed before travelling to the western boundary. A local topograpic effect imposed on the lower-layer causes very sensitive response of upper layer boundary flows. In the east standing0wave0like features are observed in the west whereas the width of the boundary increases without any evidence of the separation of the western boundary flow. This may be due to the gact that even the lower-lauer barotropic motion feels the topography its influence does not propagate into the upper-layer. With large ${\beta}$-effect on the upper-layer,relatively large scale waves whose wavelengths are greater than the internal radius deformation exist in the interior.

Recently, estuary reserovoirs have been actively constructed in Korea and also in Japan there are a large number of estuary reservoirs constructed. But most of the estuary reservoirs are located at the downstream of a river where geographical condition is best for the construction of an enclosing dam. And an effective utilization of water from the estuary reservoir seems to be difficult even if estuary reservoirs are considered to be the water resources the most available for their watershed. Studies on estuary reservoirs so far have been mainly concentrated on the physical and engineering problems of the dam construction itself. The purpose of the present study is to review the estuary reservoir planning in connection with the water resources development and to study a basis of the planning. First, the levels of water use in Korea and Japan were compared with those of other countries in the world. And then, some representative reservoirs were selected to study the roles of a reservoir and water-using conditions in the watershed. Based on the study, a survey was given on the relation between a dam construction upstream and an estuary reservoir construction downstream of a river. Finally, a comprehensive examination was made of the bases of estuary reservoir planning. (1) The estuary reservoir planning is deeply related to the plan for water use develo- pment in the watershed. After the upstream water resources were fully developed up to the most, water reso- urces development by an estuary reservoir should be started. (2) If an estuary lake has a capacity big enough, it can store flood discharge of the watershed without any loss and become a basic facility that will bring about the maxi- mum use of water from the watershed. (3) Estuary reservoirs store water used in the upstream watershed, so recycling of water use is attained by the reservoir. Water in the estuary lake is difficult to be fresh water in its long run. Therefore, estuary reservoir should be located at a place where polluted water is purified and refused. All the planning should be based on the assumption that water in the estuary lake is not fresh but polluted after a long time. (4) The estuary lake can only supply water to the lower basin directly. But the upstream area is benefited from the estuary lake by exchange of irrigation water sources between the lower and the upper area. So a large-scale exchange plan between new and existing water resources is important. By constructing estuary reservoirs and the exchange of water sources between upper and lower areas, the reasonable maximum use of water from the whole watershed is at- tained. (5) The big problem coming from the water resources development by an enclosing estuary is salt water intrusion into the lake. To maintain the estuary lake salt-free, multi-purpose use of the lake should be avoided. It is necessary to take such fundamental measures as abolition of back flow operation of gate, and the closing of the fish port and the fish ladder. The results mentioned above were found in this study and these results of this study could be used for the adequate planning of estuary reservoirs in connection with the maximum water use of the watershed.

Due to climate change, the occurrence of abnormal rainfall is increasing, and the intensity and scale of damage caused by heavy rain are increasing every year. In addition, as the frequency of heavy rains becomes more frequent, heavy rains often occur continuously, resulting in large flooding damage that has never been seen before in urban area. When near rivers and coastal areas are impermeable areas, the maximum flow increases rapidly as the rainfall intensity increases, so a comprehensive flood risk evaluation is needed considering the characteristics of the basin. In this study, the flood inundation risk evaluation was analyzed by giving scores on evaluation factors as a measure to prevent inundation in subway stations. Through the flood inundation risk evaluation process considering the comprehensive evaluation index, the flood risk evaluation was conducted on five urban railway stations with a large amount of traffic and floating population that had been inundated in the past. It is judged that by comprehensively analyzing this and establishing a inundation risk grade (grade 1 to 4) to establish a flood measure suitable for the risk grade.

The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a lenticular unit encased within mudstone-dominated, deep-sea successions (Cerro Toro Formation, upper Cretaceous), extending from north to south for more than $120{\cal}km$. The Lago Sofia conglomerate is a unique example of long, gravelly deep-sea channels, which are rare in the modern environments. In the northern part (areas of Lago Pehoe and Laguna Goic), the conglomerate unit consists of 3-5 conglomerate bodies intervened by mudstone sequences. Paleocurrent data from these bodies indicate sediment transport to the east, south, and southeart. The conglomerate bodies in the northern Part are interpreted as the tributary channels that drained down the Paleoslope and converged to form N-S-trending trunk channels. In the southern part (Lago Sofia section), the conglomerate unit comprises a thick (> 300 m) conglomerate body, which probably formed in axial trunk channels of the N-5-trending foredeep trough. The well-exposed Lago Sofia section allowed for detailed investigation of sedimentary facies and large-scale architecture of the deepsea channel conglomerate. The conglomerate in Lago Sofia section comprises stratified conglomerate, massive-to-graded conglomerate, and diamictite, which represent bedload deposition under turbidity currents, deposition by high-density turbidity currents, and muddy debris flows, respectively. Paleocurrent data suggest that the debris flows originated from the failure of nearby channel banks or slopes flanking the channel system, whereas the turbidity currents flowed parallel to the orientation of the overall channel system. Architectural elements produced by turbidity currents represent vertical stacking of gravel sheets, lateral accretion of gravel bars, migration of gravel dunes, and filling of channel thalwegs and scoured hollows, similar to those in terrestrial gravel-bed braided rivers. Observations of large-scale stratal pattern reveal that the channel bodies are offset stacked toward the east, suggestive of an eastward migration of the axial trunk channel. The eastward channel migration is probably due to tectonic tilting related to the uplift of the Andean protocordillera just west of the Lago Sofia deep-sea channel system.

Recently, due to the large-scale damage of natural disasters caused by global climate change, a monitoring system applying remote sensing technology is being constructed in disaster areas. Among remote sensing platforms, the drone has been actively used in the private sector due to recent technological developments, and has been applied in the disaster areas owing to advantages such as timeliness and economical efficiency. This paper deals with the development of a preprocessing system that can map the drone image data in a near-real time manner as a basis for constructing the disaster monitoring system using the drones. For the research purpose, our system is based on the SURF algorithm which is one of the computer vision technologies. This system aims to performs the desired correction through the feature point matching technique between reference images and shot images. The study area is selected as the lower part of the Gahwa River and the Daecheong dam basin. The former area has many characteristic points for matching whereas the latter area has a relatively low number of difference, so it is possible to effectively test whether the system can be applied in various environments. The results show that the accuracy of the geometric correction is 0.6m and 1.7m respectively, in both areas, and the processing time is about 30 seconds per 1 scene. This indicates that the applicability of this study may be high in disaster areas requiring timeliness. However, in case of no reference image or low-level accuracy, the results entail the limit of the decreased calibration.
According to the data analysis of the regional fracture systems in southern Korea, the fracture orientations show three dominant sets : NNE, NW and WNW. A NNE set is the most abundant and includes most of the largest fractures. The highest fracture density is shown in the Taebaegsan mineralized area corresponding to Ogchon nonmetamorphic belt and the lowest one in the southwestern area of southern Korea. In addition, the density is higher in nonmetamorphic sedimentary rocks such as Choseon Supergroup. Pyeongan Supergroup, Daedong Supergroup and Kyeongsang Supergroup than in Precambrian basements and Jurassic granites. The regional fractures in southern Korea can be classified into four orders designated $F_1,{\;}F_2,{\;}F_3{\;}and{\;}F_4${\;}and{\;}F_4$ on the basis of their trace length. It is quite significant that fractures of each order are self-similar with respect to orientation and the combined fracture length distribution indicates a power-law distribution with an exponent of -2.04. As fractures were analyzed based on the tectonic provinces, Gyeonggj Massif and Kyeongsang Basin have all orders of fractures from $F_1$ to $F_4$. Most of the large scale faults may be ascribed to the products of slip accumulation through multiple deformation. Others besides $F_1$ fractures are thought to be evenly distributed through the whole area of southern Korea.
