  • The design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities has been increased lately. The purpose of the design is to avoid inference of existing facilities, enhance public relations and reducing the size of the station, which is advantageous for effective use of underground spaces. Diverse downtown tunnel experience, advanced excavation equipment, reinforcement methods, monitoring technologies and numerical analysis made the design possible. This paper is to introduce the design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities via Gimpo airport area of Deagok-Sosa railway BTL project of double-tracking.

  • In order to study the mechanical behavior of shield tunnel segments during assembly stage, the in-situ tests and FDM numerical simulation were conducted based on the Foguan Shiziyang Tunnel with large cross-section. Analysis for the load state of the assembling segments in different assembly steps as well as the investigation for the changing of inner forces and longitudinal stress of segments with assembling steps were carried out in this paper. By comparing the tested results with the simulated results, the conclusions and suggestions could be drawn as follows: (1) It is the most significant for the effects on axial force and bending moment caused by the assembly of adjacent segment, followed by the insertion of key segment while the effects in the other assembly steps are relative smaller. With the increasing value of axial force, the negative bending moment turns into positive and remains increasing in most monitored sections, while the bending moment of segment B1and B6 are negative and keeping increasing; (2) The closer the monitored section to the adjacent segments or the key segment, the more significant the internal forces response, and the monitored effects of key segment insertion are more obvious than that of calculation; (3) The axial forces are all in compression during assembling and the monitored values are about 1.5~1.75 times larger than the calculated values, and the monitored values of bending moment are about 2 times the numerical calculation. The bending moment is more sensitive to the segments assembly process compared with axial force, and it will result in the large bending moment of segments during assembling when the construction parameters are not suitable or the assembly error is too large. However, the internal forces in assembly stage are less than those in normal service stage; (4) The distribution of longitudinal stress has strong influence on the changing of the internal forces. The segment side surface and intrados in the middle of two adjacent jacks are the crack-sensitive positions in the early assembly stage, and subsequently segment corners far away from the jacks become the crack-sensitive parts either.

  • Optimal design of the long tunnels with large cross sections essential for the effective development of the limited land in Korea becomes more and more difficult owing to the constantly changing social, economic, environmental and technological factors. Deficiency of the domestic research works till now on the elementary topics on tunnel ventilation retards progress on developing the key technologies urgently required for designing and managing the long and large tunnels. This paper aims at identifying the subjects on which research must be carried out for the construction and management of vehicle tunnels in Korea by means of scrutinizing the contents of the publications since 1991 at the International Symposium on Aerodynamic and Ventilation of Vehicle Tunnels, the only international conference on the tunnel ventilation.

  • Tunneling in rocks having the time-dependent behavior, causes some difficulties like tunnel convergence and, as a result, pressure on concrete lining; and so instability on this structure. In this paper the time-dependent behaviour of squeezing phenomenon in a large cross section tunnel was investigated as a case study: Alborz tunnel. Then, time-dependent behaviour of Alborz tunnel was evaluated using FLAC2D based on the finite difference numerical method. A Burger-creep viscoelastic model was used in numerical analysis. Using numerical analysis, the long-time effect of squeezing on lining stability was simulated. This study is done for primary lining (for 2 years) and permanent lining (for 100 years), under squeezing situations. The response of lining is discussed base on Thrust Force-Bending Moment and Thrust Force-Shear Force diagrams analysing. The results determined the importance of consideration of time-dependent behaviour of tunnel that structural forces in concrete lining will grow in consider with time pass and after 70 years can cause instability in creepy rock masses section of tunnel. To show the importance of time-dependent behavior consideration of rocks, elastic and Mohr-Coulomb models are evaluated at the end.

  • Tunnel Boring Machine's Technology has depends mostly on imports, currently domestic technology development was proceeding. There are many technologies in this field, above all, the large-capacity motor drive technology required for excavation is one of the core technologies. In particular, when several large motors are simultaneously starting, there are many problems due to a large starting current at that time, and it is difficult to design and operate a power receiving facility. In this paper, A method of reducing the starting current by using the regenerative power generated by the deceleration of the motor has been studied. To verify this proposal, we designed the induction motor controller using CAE based power simulation tool and verified the results of the proposed method by applying the reduced model. As a result, it is possible to reduce the maximum starting current and shorten the start-up time. Moreover, even if several motors are connected to one bank, it is proved that the method can be efficiently operated by using the sequential braking / starting sequence. In the case of a power system in which a large capacity electric motor such as a tunnel excavation system is driven, the results of this study are expected to be a stable and effective method for solving the start-up current problem and designing the power receiving facility.

  • The concrete lining in tunnel performs structural and nonstructural functions. The concrete lining works as a structural member for released load and residual water pressure in NATM tunnel system. Also concrete lining used for finishing the tunnel surface. The initial crack of concrete lining is reported because of difficulties in construction process, which concrete is injected into 30$\sim$40cm narrow gap between lining form and tunnel surface through 500${\times}$600mm small injection holes in the form. In this paper, we research a reason of initial crack occurrence by the case study of 4 lane wide span tunnel, and propose an improved method for crack minimization in construction process. We verify that the proposed method can give qualified concrete lining by carrying out the concrete injection model test and the numerical analysis of concrete flow.

  • Recently, subways in the city are formed a vast underground network which is interfered with construction when large-scale infrastructure will be planned to nearby existing subway tunnels. Researches have been restricted to estimate stability of existing subway tunnel due to adjacent excavation causued by small construction such as buildings. In this paper, OO underpass is planned on the top of existing subway tunnel, which will be need large-scale excavation, is selected as a subject of study. And the purpose of this study is to analyze the effects on existing subway tunnel due to excavation by stages on construction of underpass. The 3D-numerical analysis was performed by using the MIDAS/GTS program. The stability on existing subway tunnel caused by sequential excavation is analysed using numerical results. Based on the analysis, the excavation orders and reinforcement methods was suggested for stability of exiting subway tunnel.

  • Numerical methods are applied to simulate the smoke behavior in a ventilated tunnel using large eddy simulation (LES) which is incorporated in FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) with proper combustion and radiation model. In this study, present numerical results are compared with data obtained from experiments on pool fires in a ventilated tunnel. The model tunnel is $182m(L){\times}5.4m(W){\times}2.4m(H)$. Two fire scenarios with different ventilation rates are considered with two different fire strengths. The present results are analyzed with those from LES without combustion and radiation model and from RANS ($\kappa-\epsilon$) model as well. Temperature distributions caused by fire in tunnel are compared with each other. It is found that thermal stratification and smoke back-layer can be predicted by FDS and the temperature predictions by FDS show better results than LES without combustion and radiation model. The FDS solver, however, failed to predict correct flow pattern when the high ventilation rate is considered in tunnel because of the defects in the tunnel-inlet turbulence and the near-wall turbulence.

  • For Super-Cavitating Underwater Vehicles (SCUV), the numerical analyses and experiments in a large cavitation tunnel are carried out at relatively large Reynolds numbers. The numerical results agree well with experiments and the drag coefficient of SCUV is rarely changed by the Reynolds number. As the cavitation number is decreased, the cavity occurs and grows, the cavitator drag decreases and the body drag is affected by the degree of covering the body with the cavity. The tunnel effects, i.e. the blockage and the friction pressure drop of the tunnel, on the drag and the cavitation of SCUV are examined from the numerical results in between the tunnel and unbounded flows. In the tunnel, a minimum cavitation number exists and the drag of SCUV appears larger than that in unbounded flow. When the super-cavity covers the entire body, the friction drag almost disappears and the total drag of SCUV can be regarded as the pressure drag of cavitator.

  • The Korean Tilting Train eXpress may produced a strong micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit because of large train/tunnel area ration of conventional railways. This micro-pressure wave causes an impulsive noise which is a serious environmental noise pollution near tunnel exit. Tunnel hood can be the method of reducing the micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit. Therefore, parametric studies for tunnel hood are performed with respect to the hood length and size to investigate the effects of the tunnel hood. Also, axi-symmetric unsteady compressible flow solver was used to analyze train-tunnel relative motion. According to the result of numerical analysis, the maximum micro-pressure wave in tunnel exit is reduced by 56% throughout the hood establishment on conventional railways.
