  • In this paper, we investigated the cost comparison between a 30 MVA high temperature superconducting(HTS) transformer and a conventional large power transformer, and estimated a break even point in time of the HTS transformer comparing to the conventional large power transformer. A value between 5, 000 and 8, 500 kA-m is chosen to calculate the price of HTS tape in a 30 MVA HTS transformer. And the number of cryocooler is decided by estimating the generated energy loss in HTS transformer.

  • The introduction of the large transformer due to the large power demand has increased the fault current in power distribution system. The increased fault current can exceed the cut-off ratings of the circuit breaker. As the methods to solve this problem, the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) has been notified. However, the limited fault current by SFCL affects the operational characteristics of the protective device such as overcurrent relay. Therefore, the selection of the proper impedance for the SFCL is required to keep overcurrent relay's protective coordination with the SFCL when a large transformer is introduced into the distribution system. In this paper, the SFCL's impedance for protective coordination was investigates in that a large transformer is introduced.

  • In this paper, a voltage sag is analyzed in case of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) installed in power distribution system where replaces the main power transformer to large one to meet the power demand. First, the power system is configurated to analyze the operation characteristics of the protective relay with replacement of the main transformer and application of the SFCL. Next, the method to meet the protection coordination is analyzed with large transformer using PSCAD/EMTDC. Finally, the bus voltage is investigated according to the impedance of both main transformer and SFCL in case that the SFCL is applied into feeder.

  • In this paper, the electrical characteristics of the contactless transformer is presented using the conventional coupled inductor theory. Compared with the conventional transformer, the contactless transformer has a large airgap, long primary wire and multi-secondary wire. As such, the contactless transformer has a large leakage inductance, small magnetizing inductance and poor coupling coefficient. Therefore, large magnetizing currents flow through the entire primary system due to small magnetizing inductance, resulting in low overall system efficiency. In high power applications, the contactless transformer is so bulky and heavy that it needs to be split by some light and small transformers. So, the contactless transformer needs several small transformer modules that are connected in series or parallel to transfer the primary power to the secondary one. This paper shows the analysis and measurement results of each contactless transformer module and comparison results between the series- and parallel-connection of the contactless transformer. The results are verified on the simulation based on the theoretical analysis and the 30kW experimental prototype.

  • In this paper, ageing diagnostics in the large capacity oil transformer are investigated. Following items are investigated for the ageing diagnostic in transformer oils (leakage current of sensor, power consumption and temperature of transformer oil). All temperature data are gathered from daily report in the substation. The power consumption of transformer are gathered output report of APIS(Airport Power Information System). Especially, data of sensor leakage current are accumulated from the online diagnostic system for transformer oil. The temperature of transformer oils major change factor was ambient temperature and capacity of power load. The leakage current are change by oil temperature. The leakage current ware not more than 2 [nA] in summer,

  • In this paper, the inductive power transformer using electromagnetic induction for the road/railway applied to contactless power transfer system is suggested and some ideas for power collector design to improve the power transfer performance are presented. The proposed the inductive power transformer is used for the light railway/road transportation system. which has a large air-gap and demands a large electrical power capability. But. low output power is generated due to a loosely coupled characteristic of the large air-gap. Therefore, double layer construction of secondary winding, which was divided in half to increase both output current and output voltage was suggested. In addition, the performance of inductive power transformer to alignment condition between the primary power line and the inductive power transformer was verified by computer simulation of 2kW model.

  • Instrument transformers are a safe measurement device designed to measure high voltage and large current. A current transformer(CT) is a type of instrument transformer designed to provide a current in its secondary winding proportional to the current flowing in its primary. It is commonly used in metering and protective relaying in the electrical power industry where it facilitates the safe measurement of large current. But, care must be taken that the secondary of a current transformer is not disconnected from its load while current is flowing in the primary, as this will produce a dangerously high voltage across the open secondary, and may permanently affect the accuracy of the transformer. Especially, industrial disaster such as an electric shock and/or a burn accident occurs occasionally by disregard of warning or attention. In this paper, we developed the detector for open of current transformer secondary terminal, and which was tested by the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. Test results show that Current Transformer secondary Open Detector(CTOD) interrupted within one second electronically when the 2nd terminal of current transformer opened.

  • Power transformer have many unsymmetrical structure and electric field is enhanced in that area. Those unsymmetrical area are not covered oftenly by solid insulating material which is used as a framework specially in gas transformer. By that result there is a possibility to decrease the total insulation class of the transformer. So in this study the electrical characteristic of $FC+SF_6$ mixture gas which is used as coolants for large power gas insulated transformer and its effects on electrical characteristics of structural material are investigated. Also breakdown characteristic with the tension of taping and curvature of the coil are studied which could be used as a design factor of large power transformer.

  • With the recent development of high performance AC superconducting wire of very small ac loss and large current carrying capacity, the possibility of superconducting air core transformer is being studied. The air core transformer has merits of no iron loss, no insulation to the core and no harmonics. But the air core transformer has large exciting current and low magnetic coupling factor. To increase the coupling factor, the transformer of toroidal shape is proposed and designed. (10KVA, 110/220V) Compared with air core transformer of solenoidal shape, the performance is improved. The exciting current occupies about 22% of the rated current.

  • Percentage differential characteristic scheme has been recognized as the principal basis for large transformer protection. Nowadays, relaying signals can contain second harmonic component to a large extent even in a normal state, and second harmonic ratio indicates a tendency of relative reduction because of the advancement of transformer's core material. And then, conventional second harmonic restraint differential relaying exposes some doubt in reliability. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a new algorithm for the effective and accurate discrimination. This paper deals with advanced fuzzy logic based relaying by using flux differential, and a new fault detection criterion logic scheme by using wavelet transform. To comparative analysis of proposed techniques, the paper constructs power system model including power transformer, utilizing the EMTP, and collects data through simulation of various internal faults and magnetizing inrush. The proposed fuzzy relaying and a new fault detection scheme were tested. The former, fuzzy relaying, was proven to be faster and more reliable than the latter.
